Denton singer-song-writer Taylor Moseleyhas named his latest
project Lil Red Button.It’s a small-sounding title
for a box set chock full ofmusic.
Moseley releases the boxset at a couple of free showsSaturday night, first at Ban-ter and then over at Hailey’sClub.
The seven discs include hisEPs, Your Own Preamble, TheLast Drop and The SnowCame in February; and full-length recordings Influence,At the Moment, Taylor Mose-ley and B-sides Never Happen.
Moseley’s folksy sound isintrospective and, well, in noreal hurry. With a voice remi-niscent of Gordon Gano,Moseley approaches vocals asa suggestion, rather than anexact science.
He started making musicin school, burned out of RyanHigh School before getting a
diploma and growing into anindependent recording artist.
Details: Moseley’s show atBanter starts at 8 p.m. andalso includes sets by LeftSide Driver, Ben Cloutier andKyle Ryan. Banter is locatedat 219 W. Oak St.
Doors open at 9 p.m. atHailey’s, 122 W. Mulberry St.There, he’ll share the bill
with Jake Sharar, ChrisJessup, local Celtic rockersCounty Rexford and headlin-er Richard Haskin and theOne-Trick Ponies (starringHaskins and whicheverinstruments he feels likeplaying). No cover for ages 21and older, $5 for thoseyounger than 21.

The Thin Line Film Fest islooking for input fromDenton folks.
The upcoming festival, nowin its fifth year as Texas’ onlydocumentary festival, willinclude a filmmaking race —the Docu-Denton 7K.
“Documentary filmmakerswill make a film in 7,000 min-utes,” said Joshua Butler, thefestival founder and director.“The race starts on the firstFriday of the festival and theyhave to finish the following
Wednesday.”Each documentary finished
in the allotted time will be eligi-
ble for the Denton Doc award, which comes with braggingrights and a $1,000 cash award.
The filmmakers in the racewill draw topics submitted bylocals, and Butler said those
topics — assigned in a drawing— will be partially developed byfestival officials.
“When people find out youwork in the film industry, theyalways say, ‘I have this idea for a
movie.’ They always have anidea. In the Docu-Denton 7K,those people can submit thoseideas and they might actuallyget to see it become a shortfilm,” Butler said.
Festival officials will vet thetopics, then make sure sourceswill be available for interviewsduring the race.
“We really want to get thecommunity involved,” Butlersaid. “We have some controlover what gets into the draw-ing, so the filmmakers are get-ting ideas that are already par-tially produced. And I thinkpeople will be surprised thatthe crews can make good filmsin a limited amount of time.”

Writer-director DeeRees’ feature debutachieves a difficult,
intriguing balance. It’s at onceraw and dreamlike, specific to aparticular, personal rite of pas-sage yet relatable in its messageof being true to oneself.
Adepero Oduye gives a sub-tly natural performance asAlike (pronounced ah-lee-kay),a 17-year-old Brooklyn girlwho’s struggling to come out asa lesbian.
Each day at school, Alike
dresses the way that makes herfeel comfortable in baggy T-shirts and baseball caps, andshe pals around with her brashbest friend, Laura (PernellWalker), who’s already happilyout. But on the bus ride home, she must transform herself intothe young lady her mother,Audrey (Kim Wayans),approves of and loves.
Audrey hopes arranging anew friendship with a col-league’s daughter, Bina (Aasha
Davis), will set Alike down atraditionally straight, femalepath, but this budding relation-ship only complicates mattersfurther.
Simultaneously, Alike’s homelife is deteriorating, as herpolice officer father (CharlesParnell) begins keeping suspi-ciously late hours; it’s a subplotthat bogs things down and feelslike a distraction from Alike’sjourney, a device to add ten-sion. But Alike’s story is inspir-ing to see: Oduye is bothmelancholy and radiant in therole, and she makes you longfor her character to finally findpeace.
Bradford Young’s award-winning cinematography givesPariah the gauzy, gorgeous feelof an urban fairy tale.

A change will do you good: Mix up your routine, broaden your mind with classesBy Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor
Admit it. You’ve been wanting to take a pottery class for years now. Or you’ve huffed and puffed away on the gym treadmill, wishing this fitness thing were somehow more fun.You don’t always hear much about them, but lifelong learning courses are perennially available at the area’s three college campuses —
Denton’s University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University and Corinth’s North Texas Central College. All three schools honor the idea of a town-and-gown partnership by bringing in teachers with special expertise so that locals can learn to dance,
fix a car or throw a serving bowl without the hefty tuition that comes with more committed study. Each college’s continuing education center has already lined up a spring semester of courses that just about anyone — whether they’re retired, a stay-at-home parent or a full-time employee —
can fit into their schedule. Take a look at some winners we found in course catalogs.

A TOOL KIT FOR BETTER RELATIONSHIPS
What: “Achieving Success With DifficultPeople,” a University of North Texas mini-courseWhere: onlineWhen: Wednesdays and Fridays, from Jan. 18through Feb. 24Register: by Jan. 12 at www.ed2go.com/unt/online_course/sdp/syllabus/Achieving_Success_with_Difficult_People.htmlFee: $89
If conflict is inevitable, then learninghow to work through it — and maybeeven prevent it — could soothe a lot ofruffle-prone feathers.
This online course is taught from acorporate point of view. But “tanks,”“exploders,” “snipers” and “know-it-alls” are also found on the other end ofthe customer service support line, around the family dinner table andamong church committees.
This UNT course is designed to helpemployees, relatives, bosses and volun-teers learn how they can get out of arelational rut through learning how tobest communicate with the bullies andjerks among us.
And if a student should recognizethat she’s a classic sniper? Well, a littleself-awareness can be a good thing.
TAKE A BREAK FROMTHE TREADMILL
What: “Swing Dance,” a course on the WorldWar II-era dance for teens and adultsWhere: TWU’s Dance and GymnasticsLaboratory Building, located on Bell Avenuejust north of Administration DriveWhen: 6:30 p.m. Mondays, from Jan. 23through March 26 Register: www.twu.edu/ce/Community-Dance.aspFee: $70
Texas Woman’s University offerscommunity dance classes every yearfor all ages.
Adults can learn how to dip, twirland land safely from a lift to thesounds of Big Band jazz.
Swing is a high-energy partnerdance that gets pairs bebopping, LindyHopping and jitterbugging to blaringhorns — though competitive dancerscan swing to hip-hop if it has a properbackbeat.
The class doesn’t require students tojoin with a partner, but swing dance isbuilt for people who cut a rug withoutreservation.
To see a full schedule of dance class-es — which are set to meet weekly,Monday through Friday — visitwww.twu.edu/ce/Community-Dance.asp. Adults and children can try ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop.
GO BOWLING
What: “Basic Ceramics: Pottery,” a course forall skill levelsWhere: at NCTC’s Gainesville campus, 1525W. California St.When: 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, from Jan. 26 toMarch 8Register: by Jan. 23 by either mailing orhand-delivering payment and registration formto the Gainesville campus. The registrationform is on Page 53 of the spring catalog atwww.nctc.edu/LifelongLearning/documents/completedschedulespring2012.pdf.Fee: $139
This course will show aspiring pot-ters how to handle clay and how tothrow clay on a wheel to make a vessel. Most of the class time will be dedicat-ed to throwing wheel forms. The pot-tery wheel is considered to be a fussytool that requires neophytes to getcomfortable with it before finding thebest speed and techniques for the indi-vidual artist.
All students need to bring withthem is an open mind, and be dressedin grubby clothes. Pottery on the wheelis muddy work — hands will get dirty.
ONE-POT MEALS, ON THE GO
What: “Dutch-Oven Cooking,” a course incooking in a Dutch ovenWhere: The local NCTC campus at 1404Corinth St.When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28Register: by April 25 by either mailing orhand-delivering payment and registration formto the Corinth campus. The registration formis on Page 53 of the spring catalog atwww.nctc.edu/LifelongLearning/documents/completedschedulespring2012.pdf.Fee: $55
No, this isn’t a class to teach gour-mands about how to make the best ofthat pricey Le Creuset Dutch oven.
This class is to teach campers andbackyard adventurers how to make ameal with a pot or two, some nice, hotcoals (or canned fuel) and fresh ingre-dients.
This class will cover stews and dish-es that revive the body on a campingtrip, or meals that feed a fleet ofenthusiastic drivers and passengers asthey return to the RV campground.
Students can bring their own Dutchovens — heavy cast iron pots that roastmeats and heat stews slowly and yieldfull-bodied flavors — or use one pro-vided by the instructor.
And chances are, home cooks canmake the same recipes on the stovetop with an indoor Dutch oven.
