Denton’s Juneteenth cele-brates its 40th anniver-sary this weekend.

Juneteenth honors the day —June 19, 1865 — when Unionsoldiers arrived in Galveston toannounce the end of the CivilWar and that slaves were free, two and a half years after theEmancipation Proclamation.

There’s speculation why thenews arrived late — from a mes-senger murdered on his way toTexas to the information beingdeliberately withheld — butwhat is known for sure is thatJuneteenth is the oldest knownholiday to commemorate theend of slavery in the U.S.

Some 5,000 people are ex-pected to attend Denton’s June-teenth celebration on Saturday.

But first is tonight’s Heritageof Hope Celebration. Commu-nity leaders and some of thearea’s top high school gradu-ates will be honored. New thisyear is a cultural arts exhibit.

At 4 p.m. Friday, judgingbegins as grill masters compete

to win this year’s annual barbe-cue cook-off.

At 6 p.m., the annual GospelExtravaganza brings togetherarea choirs to rejoice and singpraise music. Some of the fea-tured gospel performers will beKatina Sono Butler, theKingdom Manifesters praiseteam, Archie Robinson, LynnSmith and Tre Nelson.

All of the events lead up toSaturday’s all-day bash, start-ing at 9 a.m. with a coed soft-ball tournament. At the sametime, parade participants will

be assembling at the DentonCivic Center.

The annual JuneteenthGrand Parade starts at 10 a.m.Floats, bands, steppers andplenty of community spirit willwind through the Square toSoutheast Denton, ending atFred Moore Park. The celebra-tion will continue until 8 p.m.with food vendors, music andlive entertainment, children’sgames and prizes, and a three-on-three basketball tourna-ment.

Live music will play through-out the day, with the Inner CityAll Stars, the all-girl bandBeauty and the Beats, theDynamic Wichita Kansas Step-pers, and rappers SmoothDand Madam Ice. The headlineris Dallas jazz singer and saxo-phonist Don Diego, who willperform at 6:15 p.m. on theC.H. Collins Activity Stage atFred Moore Park.

Denton four-pieceBronze Whaler lists aboggling range of influ-

ences, from folksy pop darlingFeist to the strident LedZeppelin to Bob Marley.

The group released its EPRise With the Tide last August, and has performed in respect-ed Dallas and Fort Worth ven-ues. It’s back to Denton thisweekend for a gig at 10 p.m.Saturday at the Boiler Room,101 W. Hickory St.

Influences aside, BronzeWhaler makes shoe-gazer rockthat rides the edge of hard, noisy rock. Whaler’s musicstrikes a symphonic balancebetween poppy rock and hardrock.

Bronze Whaler headlinesafter sets by March of the Bull,Denton punk-popsters BluntForce and Layla.

Details: Doors open at 8p.m. Cover is $7 for ages 21and older, $10 for thoseyounger than 21.

Sounds a little like:Incubus and Minus the Bear.Moody guitar waves ride outsongs that sound mostly sadand meditative. Rise With theTide goes well with long drivesafter sundown.

Ryan Thomas Becker must

not get a lot of sleep. TheDenton artist — who seems tobe moving toward “institution”status in a town already wellrepresented by revered musi-cians — is part of yet anotherinterest: the Slow Burners.

He’s not the heavy hitter inthe band. Singer-guitaristGeorge Neal — from LittleGrizzly — brings heartfeltimpressions to the lyrics.Grady Don Sandlin, the otherhalf of RTB2, a duo thatincludes Becker, plays drums.Becker plays guitar and key-boards, while Jason LynnBacchus plays bass and JeffreyGruber plays guitar.

With Becker and Gruber inthe house, the Slow Burners

Weekend brings dreamyrock, punk-tinged roots

TURN IT UP Best bets for music this weekend

can’t help but serve up stoutguitar work. Neal lends hissandy voice to the amblingfret-and-pick playing. Sure, hesometimes can’t lift his vocalheft over the higher notes, buthe doesn’t care and neither dowe.

Details: The band plays aset Friday night at RubberGloves Rehearsal Studios, 411E. Hickory St., sharing thestage with Deep Snapper andAmerican Werewolf Academy.Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is$5.

Warning to other localmusicians: Becker could starta playground brawl if Dentonrevives Rock Lottery. We

haven’t found enough musi-cians who don’t do a sort ofwe’re-not-worthy head bow atthe mention of his name toform a team, but we figurethere are enough local musi-cians who love him to makehim the secret ingredient to alottery band.

Sounds like: a companionact to Denton act the HopeTrust, and the Proclaimersafter less Guinness and morerehearsal. Sometimes, wethough we heard a ModestMouse grunt, but really, it wasa growl barely reminiscent ofthe Pixies’ Black Francis.

It’s been 15 years since amovie called Toy Story revolu-tionized animated filmmaking.

The charming comedy aboutthe relationships among achild’s anthropomorphic toysspawned a phenomenon ofcomputer-generated featuresthat dominates the mediumthese days.

Yet even now, the franchisethat marked the feature debutof the Pixar Entertainment jug-gernaut can still show its com-petition a thing or two. Elevenyears after the first sequel toToy Story became a sensation,

Toy Story 3 proves the charac-ters and concept stand the testof time.

As with the other films inPixar’s unprecedented winningstreak, the third Toy Storyinstallment — in 3-D this time— shows that the script is stillthe most important thing. It’s asuperb mix of fresh and famil-iar aimed more toward fans ofthe first two films than as aneffort to introduce a new gener-ation to Woody, Buzz and thegang.

The clever story sees teenag-

er Andy heading off to college, forcing him to relegate his loyaltoys from his childhood toeither the attic or the trash. Buta mix-up separates sheriffWoody (voiced by Tom Hanks)from astronaut buddy BuzzLightyear (Tim Allen) andfriends, causing them to beshipped to a day care centerwhere the toys are mistreatedand bullied. It’s up to the loyal-ty and resourcefulness ofWoody and friends to returnthemselves to their rightfulowner.

The result is both humorousand heartfelt. Several of thenew characters are amusing(including a doll romanceinvolving Ken and Barbie), andan extended sequence in classicToy Story fashion during whichthe resilient toys attempt toescape from the day care is

both hilarious and exciting.Lee Unkrich, an editor on

the first two films, capablytakes the directing reins, andthe Pixar team again allows itsimagination to run wild withdozens of new toys on displaythat should provide a nostalgickick for those who rememberthe days before children hadcellphones at age 10 and e-mailaddresses at 12.

Although it almost overstaysits welcome, Toy Story 3 is avisual and narrative treat. Thestory wraps up capably in whatcould be the final sequel in theseries. Then again, maybe itshould continue to infinity —and beyond.

OPENING FRIDAY8: The Mormon Proposition() Compelling if sometimes

unfocused documentary about the

2008 voter passage of a California

referendum that reversed the state’s

earlier legalization of gay marriage,

and specifically the aggressive and

expensive campaign launched by the

LDS church to ensure its success.

The film bashes the church as you

might expect, but it also offers some

insight into the issues at hand, right

down to questions of love and

human rights. Not rated, 78 minutes.

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work(1/2) Amusing documentary

about the life and career of the leg-

endary comedienne, who remains a

workaholic well into her 70s, both in

stand-up clubs and various television

ventures. It examines her influence

as a groundbreaking comic and

salutes her versatility, but the film is

more than just a tribute. It also

delves into Rivers’ personal life filled

with tragedy and triumph, and offers

a portrait that’s both funny and emo-

tionally revealing. Rated R, 84 min-

Syracuse and his daughter seek to

When an ambitious music executive

(Jonah Hill) tries to escort the

impetuous Snow to Los Angeles for a

comeback show, it leads to a wild

adventure. The film generates plenty

of vulgar laughs, mostly from ran-

dom one-liners and a slew of great

cameos. Yet the reliance on unin-

spired drug gags and lack of real-

world plausibility take over. Rated R,

Iron Man 2 (1/2) Robert Downey

faces off against those who doubt his

love of country and his ability to

defend it. Mickey Rourke stars as a

mad Russian scientist and Sam Rock-

well plays a scheming competitor. Jon

Favreau again directs, and it looks like

more of the same, with few additional

effects or breakthrough surprises.

Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A.

The Karate Kid () A remake of

the 1984 film might seem unneces-

sary, but at least this version

changes some of the details, follow-

ing a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden

Smith) who moves to Beijing with his

mother (Taraji P. Henson), where he

gets beaten up by a bigger kid at his

school, so he seeks advice from a

wise but reclusive handyman (Jackie

Chan). While the direction needs

more discipline, the backdrops are

scenic, and Smith and Chan generate

a convincing student-teacher chem-

istry. Rated PG, 140 minutes. — T.J.

Shrek Forever After (1/2) All this

3-D and IMAX technology can’t hide

the uninspired feeling given off by

this fourth installment in the erst-

while hilarious animated franchise.

There are a few solid laughs, musical

numbers and clever fairy-tale lam-

poons — the type that made the first

two Shrek films so amusing. But this

one feels more like a retread than a

fresh idea, with Shrek’s marriage

being threatened over his frustration

with fatherhood and a midlife crisis.

When U.S. Air ForceCapt. Joe “Rifle”Shetterly climbs

into the one-seat cockpit of anA-10A Thunderbolt II, he’s ona mission.

When he’s stationed inAfghanistan, the pilot is onhis way to provide assistanceto ground troops. Back in theU.S., his job is to educate thepublic about the Air Forceand its use of the impressivetwin-engine jet aircraft, nick-named “The Warthog.”

“Close air support is thebread and butter of our mis-sion, and that means we are

able to operate and deliverprecision munitions withinclose proximity of friendlyforces,” Shetterly said.

With the help of his highly trainedcrew, Shetterly will demonstrate thecapabilities of the airplane through a15-minute aerial display thisSaturday at the 2010 Denton

Airshow. The U.S. Air Force A-10AThunderbolt II West CoastDemonstration Team headlines theentertainment for this year’s event.

Shetterly described what air showattendees are likely to experience.

“I’m doing maneuvers and point-ing the airplane at the ground andgoing upside down,” he said.“During the demo when we simulateshooting the gun or droppingbombs, I do an accelerated aggres-sive recovery at the bottom of a divetoward the ground,” which, he said,“makes for a big airflow disruptionover the top of the wing and youhear the air. It almost sounds like anexplosion.”

“That diving toward the ground issimulating a tactical weapons deliv-ery like we would do in combat,” hesaid.

During Saturday’s performance, another trained Warthog pilot willkeep in radio contact with Shetterly

from the ground to make sure thathe stays within the parameters of theplane’s capabilities.

“The whole point is to avoid some-thing catastrophic from happening,so we can continue to go out thereand showcase the good things wedo,” he said. “It’s truly just a safetymeasure.”

According to Shetterly, theWarthog was conceived around a“giant gun,” with seven barrels thatare operated hydraulically. He saideach barrel is nearly 8 feet long andshoots 30 mm rounds at 70 roundsper second.

“There’s never been a larger gunmounted or strapped to a fighter-size aircraft,” Shetterly said.

The gun is powerful enough todestroy ground targets, includingtanks and other armored vehicles. One of the advantages of this partic-ular aircraft is its ability to remainairborne for long periods of time,

enabling the pilot who is “on station”to respond quickly when help isneeded on the ground.

Shetterly and the crew will be onhand to talk with air show attendees, who will be able to get a close-uplook at the aircraft up until an hourbefore the demonstration.

The crew, which includes Staff Sgt.Dino Levidiotis, Staff Sgt. PaulRiebe, Staff Sgt. Mark Bapp andSenior Airman Matt Turner, will beavailable to answer questions.

“The whole point is showcasing tothe taxpayers what we’re doing andwhy it matters,” Shetterly said.

Also on display will be theFlagship Detroit, one of AmericanAirlines’ fleet of Douglas DC-3s,manufactured in 1937. In 2004, theFlagship Detroit Foundation pur-chased the airplane with the goal ofcontinuing to maintain and operatethe aircraft as a tribute to AmericanAirlines employees.

Other grounded aircraft on displaywill be a T-6A Texan II, F4U Corsair,T-44 Pegasus, Douglas DC-3, SNJ-5Texan, Pitts S2B, T-34B Mentor, T-

6G Texan, T-28B Trojan, light-sportaircraft, T-34B Mentor, CH-47DChinook, Piper L-4, Cessna 182,Cessna 172 Skyhawk, Piper J3C, C-45G Expeditor, CT-156 Harvard II,Sukhoi SU-26M and T-45CGoshawk, among others.

The Flight of the PhoenixEscadrille from the Flight of thePhoenix Aviation Museum in Gilmerwill fly overhead in a formation ofvintage T-6s.

Other Denton Airshow profession-als will be Andrew Wright of Austin, who will execute aerobatics in hisGiles 202; Julia Wood, who has ledteams on the national and interna-tional level in aerobatic competitionsand will perform in a Sukhoi SU-26M; and Tony Wood, who performsaerobatic displays in a Sukhoi 26,Pitts S2B and TurboShark.
