FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK As we come to the last days of January, we pray for a positive impact by all those who participated in the

west coast Walk for Life in San Francisco this Saturday. Through the persistence of several organizers, espe-cially Petra and Ed, (thank you!) the bus to San Francisco was full. The march follows the 46th Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortions throughout the USA. The U.S. Supreme Court opinion further eroded the belief and understanding that life begins at conception, a position strongly taught in Catholicism as well as in other religious traditions. Instead, the court determined that the right to a human life begins at the point of “viability”, which was described as being able to survive outside of the mother’s womb. A term that has been extended even beyond the second trimester, as was initially discussed by the court. The debate today rarely addresses the issue of when life begins, but rather moves to whether a woman should have the right to choose because it involves her body. Tragically, that begs the question of when life begins; in fact, it purposely ignores it. For if there was a recognition of a human life in the womb (as some of our criminal statutes recognize) then there is another “body” to consider and the right of the life within must be honored as well. As I mentioned in Masses last weekend, while we pray for a change in the law respecting human life, we also must pray for a change of hearts and minds respecting life in the womb. For while the law of the land may help change under-standings, one cannot legislate this problem away. Abortions will continue to be seen as a “choice” until the fact that another, real, human life is at stake becomes fully accepted. We pray for that change and for all that is needed in our society to bring lives conceived into the world and to care for them until they are able to carefully for themselves.

The National Cathedral Ministry Conference a couple weeks ago was a worthwhile gathering for us to learn and share with other Cathedral ministers about some of the special challenges Cathedral parishes face. Like St. Thomas Aquinas, many Cathedrals are downtown and face issues of parking, homelessness, finances, and aging buildings. But it was also good to hear and share ideas about bringing a closer connection for all the parishes in the Diocese. This Lent I hope to begin a weekly prayer intention for a different parish or mission in our diocese, over the course of a year we’ll pray for all of them. We also want to continue to build our welcoming ministry. I also hope we can arrange some regularly scheduled tours of the Cathedral. There is much that we can do to foster growth and new participation in our parish so please keep this in your prayers and discernment about what role you can play.

I look forward to greeting you at our St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral Feast Day celebration this Sunday at 12:30 PM. St. Thomas Aquinas died on January 28, 1274, at the age of 49. In his brief years he authored many scholarly works including the Summa Theologiae, his most famous work. He is honored as a Doctor of the Church and is the patron saint of Catholic schools, philosophers, theologians and booksellers. The Church has much for which to be grateful in celebrating his memorial and as the parish bearing his name we are doubly blessed. I hope you will come to the luncheon and enjoy your fellow parishioners. If you can, please bring a side dish to share.

Next Saturday, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, and celebrates the day the infant Jesus was presented to the Lord at the temple by Mary and Joseph. It is also traditionally known as Candle-mas, a time for the blessing of candles to be used throughout the year, recalling Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. As usual, Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 AM and all are invited to come and bring candles you will use in your home. A special blessing of candles will occur immediately before the procession for the Mass. By de-cree of Pope St. John Paul II, this day also is the World Day for Consecrated Life, to honor and pray for all those who have dedicated their lives through consecration in a religious community. We give thanks for those religious who have served in our Diocese, especially the Dominicans and Franciscans here at the Cathedral.

Blessings to you all this 3rd week in Ordinary Time.

JANUARY 28TH FEAST DAY OF ARGUABLY THE

GREATEST INTELLECT IN THE HISTORY OF THE

CATHOLIC CHURCH.

St. Thomas Aquinas, known as the Angelic Doctor due to his purity of mind & body and great intelligence. He gave up a life of nobility and wealth to be a poor Dominican friar, at the time a new religious order,

much to the consternation of his family. One biographer notes that prior to St. Thomas Aquinas’ birth, a holy

hermit prophesied to his mother about her unborn child: “He will enter the Order of Friars Preachers, and so great will be his learning and sanc ty that in his day no one will be found to equal him.”

Unfortunately the prophecy didn’t prevent St. Thomas’ mother from having him locked up in a tower for nearly two years in an a empt to dissuade him from his chosen voca on to the Dominican order. They preferred him to be an esteemed Benedic ne, and one day an influen al abbot, not a begging mendicant friar. The hermit’s prophecy eventually proved true, for Aquinas prevailed against his family’s intrigues & quickly surpassed the greatness even of his teacher, Saint Albert the Great, who himself was called the “teacher of everything there is to know.” Aquinas wrote copious volumes on theology and philosophy, even dicta ng his teaching to up to four secretaries at a single me. Aquinas is now the foremost Doctor of the Catholic Church, & numerous popes have recom-mended the careful study of his works (especially in seminaries) the most notable of which is the Summa Theologica, a master compendium of Catholic faith and doctrine.

ISSUES OF LIFE PEACE AND J USTICE Unity, oneness in our humanity, wholeness. This is a theme running through our Scripture readings for today. Fast-forward to modern mes and we find the Church has summed up our human oneness in two principles of Catholic Social Teaching, the Common Good and Solidarity. “Humanity is coming to under-stand ever more clearly that it is linked by one sole des ny that re-quires joint acceptance of responsibility, a responsibility inspired by an integral and shared humanism.”

“A society that wishes and intends to remain at the service of the human being at every level is a society that has the common good — the good of all people and of the whole person — as its primary goal. The human person cannot find fulfill-ment in himself, that is, apart from the fact that he exists ‘with’ others and ‘for’ others.

“Solidarity is also an authen c moral virtue, not a ‘feeling of vague compassion or shallow distress at the misfortunes of so many people, both near and far. On the contrary, it is a firm and persevering determina on to commit oneself to the common good. That is to say to the good of all and of each individual, because we are all really responsible for all.’ Solidarity rises to the rank of fundamental social virtue since it places itself in the sphere of jus ce. It is a virtue directed par excel-lence to the common good, and is found in ‘commitment to the good of one's neighbor…’ (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, #6, #165, #193).
