Reflection on Today’s Readings:

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...

3rd Sunday In Ordinary time - There is a certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus calls His first disciples — Andrew and Simon, James and John. Each one follows Jesus immediately,

unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father and fellow-workers. To what is Jesus calling me — at this moment, in these circumstances? What will I need to abandon in order to follow Him?

Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat., Jan. 28th & Sun., Jan. 29th, 2012 - 4th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all Masses next Sunday:

Reading 1 Reading 2 Gospel: Dt 18:15-20 (71B) 1 Cor 7:32-35 Mk 1:21-28

^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call the Rectory Office at 310- 670-2243.

FOCUS: We are to seek the Kingdom of God and its riches above material things - As Christians, we are not to become too tied to the treasures and allurements of our earthly surroundings. Instead, we are to live a simpler life, seeking the riches of God’s Kingdom above material things. God wants us to have what we truly need, but not to make things the focus of our lives. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today’s first and second readings remind us that we will have to stand before God to give an account of our lives. They tell us that we must put our lives in order before it is too late. The Gospel tells of Jesus calling the first disciples, and their immediate and total response to follow Him.

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

Ë To receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, call the Parish Office at 310-670-2243. _ Please pray for those who have died, especially Joan Porter, and Janice Sheraden, that they may rest in peace.

Dear Parishioners, This Wednesday, January 25, we celebrate the Feast of the Conversion

of St. Paul. The feast not only provides us with an opportunity to honor this great missionary of the early Church, but also helps us to reflect on our own continuing conversion and on the privilege that all of us have to proclaim by the manner of our own life the leadership of Jesus. As St. Paul says it “to preach Christ and him crucified.” Next Sunday and all next week, we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Our parish will have a chance to show our support of our own parish school and our students who I expect to be excellent Catholic leaders for our Church. We thank you for your generosity. God bless you. Devotedly, Father Gabe

Ministry sends us beyond the parish… FACT OF LIFE Parental Notification Initiative As Catholics, we believe and teach that we bear the image of God. We come to life as the result of humanity’s collaboration in God’s creative work.

Ordinarily, each child is the result of the loving union of a man and woman who have formed a family. The family then cradles the newborn, raises up the child and guides the young person’s development to adulthood. As citizens, we believe that government serves best when it supports families in their irreplaceable task of nurturing the next generation. We therefore wish to express our support for the Parental Notification Initiative, which would require a young girl aged 12-17 to include her parents in a decision to secure an abortion. Because current law allows secrecy for “confidential medical services” a young girl could have multiple abortions—at state expense—without her parents’ knowledge. Not only are her parents still responsible for her medical and emotional needs if she suffers complications from the abortion, but current policy denies them accurate information as to how best to care for her. The relationship between that girl and her parents will be forever altered because of her secret. [The Parental Notification Initiative requires over 500,000 signatures by March 30 to qualify for the November ballot.] Statement of the California Catholic Bishops, www.cacatholic.org. Prayer for Life: Thank you Father God for being the Creator of my life and every life. Please give me, and the society in which I live, an appreciation for your gift of life. Show me how I can honor you today in response to all the blessings you bestow so freely. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

- Mark 1:15

Treasures from our traditions: “Ordinary is not always a desirable adjective, ‘Who would not be insulted to receive a thank-you note for your “ordinary birthday gift,” or “the ordinary hospitality at the dinner party.” No restaurant advertisers its “ordinariness,” no car dealer seats a customer at the steering wheel and whispers, “Look how ordinary it is!” Yet here we are in “Ordinary Time.” The word carries a different meaning here: it does not mean these days are dull, boring, pedestrian, uninteresting. It means “ordinal,” or “numbered” Sundays, a season of the year when we follow the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in an ordered way, with each Sunday assigned an ordinal number. You can amaze your friends with this example of Catholic arithmetic: the “Ordinary Sundays” begin with the last Sunday of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord, continue until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster of feasts following Pentecost Sunday. The numbers are calculated by continuing backwards from the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Thirty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Now you know there is nothing “ordinary” about “Ordinary Time.” - James Field, Copyright 8 J.S. Paluch Co.

As Catholics, we celebrate the gift of mercy and forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Celebrating as individuals or as a community, we give thanks to God

whose gift of mercy makes all life meaningful. It is our prayer that the gift of reconciliation will inspire all of us with deep gratitude for all the wondrous gifts God offers. St. Anastasia was blessed to have 80 children receive in the Sacrament of Reconciliation this past Wednesday evening. Let us remember to keep them and their families in our parish prayers as they continue preparing to receive the gift of God's everlasting love!

Ministry in Community …

Teaching kids to be safe around unfa-miliar animals - We’ve all had the experience of someone else’s dog

approaching us. Uncertainty about the dog’s intent can be frightening, especially to young children. The ASPCA website provides parents with advice on teaching their children to read a dog’s body language and to identify signs that it wants to be left alone. The website also helps parents teach their children how to protect themselves from an overexcited pet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such as rolling into a ball, protecting hands and face and calling for help, rather than running or screaming if chased by a dog. For more information, check out Dog Bite Prevention and Safety at www.aspca.org. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

REMINDERS . . Next Sunday, January 29th, monthly Wedding Anniversary Blessing, after the 12 Noon Mass. All

couples married during the month of January are welcome! First Friday, February 3rd, School Mass at 11 am. First Saturday Eucharistic Adoration, February 4th, from 8:30 to 9:30 am.

Parish Ball and Silent Auction Donations! Once again, St. A’s Catholic school is sponsoring the Parish Ball and Silent Auction in support of our children. The event will be held on March 10, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach. We are asking our local and neighboring businesses and families to support our school by donating an item or service to the Silent Auction or becoming an Event Sponsor of our program. If you know of any businesses, local service providers, friends or family that may want to donate to our fundraising event, please contact Jackie Aguilera at 310.722.9549, or at [email protected] and we will reach out to them directly. This is a great way for local businesses, neighbors and friends to market their services to our community families while contributing to a worthy cause. No contribution is too small!

Living Faith … Toward Christian Unity - Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths. - Psalm 25:4 TODAY, IS ECUMENICAL Sunday, a day when we Christians are urged to pray and work for Christian unity. The ecumenical movement was born over 100 years ago, when 1300 representatives from various Protestant denominations met in Edinburgh, Scotland, to seek ways to reconcile some of their divisions, divisions they recognized as scandalous. Today, the ecumenical movement includes Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox congregations from virtually all over the world. What does the ecumenical movement have to do with us? First, we are reminded to pray that we Christian Churches need to work tirelessly to make Jesus’ words a reality: “that they all may be one.” We can also bring a non-Catholic friend to Mass, invite leaders of other congregations to speak at your Church, organize an ecumenical prayer service or share the benefits and traditions of your Church with a non-Catholic friend. - Sr. Melannie Svoboda, S.N.D.

Adult Confirmation 2011-2012 - If you are Baptized Catholic, have received your First Communion, and wish to complete your initiation in the Catholic Faith, the Adult Confirmation process is the right place for you. Class sessions will take place at St. Mark’s in Venice on the following dates: Jan. 28, Feb. 11, 18 & Mar. 3 is the clos-ing Retreat. Please call Suzette Sornborger at 310.670.2243 x51, or [email protected] for further details.
