Crossings deadline is firm The February 13 deadline for Crossings for Kids Camp is a hard deadline, and it is one imposed on us by the camp. We have 40 spaces reserved. However, after February 13, we will be charged $75 for each one we do not use. Because of this, I will be releasing all unpaid spots at this deadline. It might still be possible to get in after this date, and we will ask, but in order to be sure you have a place, please honor this deadline and get your deposit money to Emily Thompson by Feb-ruary 13. Thanks!

Pearl Metzger

350 El Conquistador Place

Louisville, KY 40220

Pearl Finney Metzger was born on January 30, 1926, in Lyon County, Kentucky. She was the 7th of 8 children born to Robert Leslie Finney and Emily Jane Garner. Pearl’s father was a farmer, and her mother was a homemaker. “One of my jobs while growing up was hoeing the garden,” remem-bers Pearl. “When I was 6 years old, my father died of tuberculosis. I was so sad,” says Pearl. “My mother took care of all 8 of us. She was a great seamstress.” Pearl attended grade school in Lamasco, KY. “I won the spelling match at school when I was in the 5th grade,” she remembers. “I out-spelled everyone through the 8th grade. However, I was too young to participate in the state spelling match. That was my first big dis-appointment.” Raised in a Christian home, Pearl made a profession of faith and was baptized when she was 12 years old at Lamasco Baptist Church. “The Sermon on the Mount has always been my favor-ite scripture passage,” she says. Pearl’s favorite hymn is “Because He Lives.” In 1944 Pearl graduated from J.M. Atherton High School for Girls in Louisville. She went to work for the Red Cross after graduation and was employed there for 6 years. During her lunch hour, she took voice lessons at UofL. “I always wanted to be an opera singer,” she says. She en-joyed having season tickets to the Louisville Philharmonic concerts. In 1950, Pearl went to work for Schmutz Manufacturing Company on 16th and Main, where she was the secretary to the owner and president for 21 years. On June 14, 1969, Pearl married Wesley Aaron Metzger, whom she had known for a number of years as he was a commercial artist at Schmutz. She and Wesley had a factory rep business out of her mother’s home, while she also cared for her mother. Pearl names her sister, Fay Fin-ney, as one of the most influential people in her life. “I admire her more than anybody,” says Pearl. “She gives me good advice and she has the most even steady personal-ity.” She and Fay joined SMBC in 1993.

Preteens play Jeopardy! Preteens will square off in their an-nual Jeopardy challenge this Sun-day, January 29 during Sunday School. The fun begins at 9:50 a.m. in rooms 226 and 230. 6th grade won last year. Will they defend their crown? Be here and find out!

No 5th Sunday January 29th would normally feature a 5th Sunday Get-Together, but we are going to meet for Sunday School as usual instead for two rea-sons. First, we had get-together on January 1 to celebrate the beginning of a new year. Secondly, we will lose most of our Sunday School time on February 5 due to Upward Day at SMBC (details elsewhere in the DOVE).

Several people have asked us to share some of the stories about the people we help. Several weeks ago we helped a family from Africa who have only been here for 4 months. They have three children, ages of 15, 4 and 6. They are Christian and because of circumstance have been forced to come here. They hope to make America their permanent home now. They came to our attention through a mem-ber of our church, Marge Hawkins who is a pediatrician at Kosair Children’s Hospital. They had seen Marge be-cause of medical issues with the 2 younger children. When we furnish a house we request that the owner be gone for the day and come back to a surprise. Because they have only been here a short while they knew of no place they could stay. So Marge took them for the entire day and treated them to a wonderful experience. First they went to the Science Museum where the children could explore the many fun things to do there. Then they went to the Spaghetti Factory for lunch and then spent the rest of the day at the Zoo . They all had a wonderful time and the father couldn’t believe he saw animals like they have in Africa here in a city. They arrived back at the apart-ment around 5:30 and were totally amazed. The father then insisted we stay for African coffee. It is a real ceremony and the wife dressed in her native dress to prepare it. Marge will serve as their mentor so they will have the much needed care and support they need. Thanks to all who made this a very special day for this much deserv-ing family. Jim & Gerry Harrah

Thank You To our church family, A great big “thank you” for all of the nice and good things you did for Willis and me when Willis was hav-ing so many health problems. God has been gracious to us and he is well on his way to being physically whole. He has been to church for worship several times now and we are praying that he will be able to continue. The carol singers were such a great spiritual time. They filled our living room and our hearts. Thanks to all of them. I don’t know how folks without Jesus in their lives get through hard times. We know God loves and cares for us. We rest in that love. Thanks for the meals you sent. We are so grateful for the food and we enjoyed every bite. Also we thank those who helped in transportation and took Will to men’s activities. We are almost back to normal and we are adjusting to changes we are having to make. Again, “Thank you.” Your sister and brother in Christ, Roberta and Willis Tassie
