Year 2 week 3 of January Home school lessons beginning Monday 18/1/21
Monday 18th January 2021
English
This is the 2nd week we will be looking at the poem, These Old Shoes, by Tony Mitton.
Remember this poem tells the story of a much-loved pair of shoes which, after long and faithful
service and an eventful ‘life’ are finally put in the re-cycling bin. After completing last week’s
work, you should know it quite well. The poem is on the next page so you can reread it or get an
adult to read it to you to remind you of it if you need.
Next, look through the PowerPoint about Adam adjective to remind you what adjectives are as I
would like you to use lots of these in your English work today.
Now, look through the Naomi Noun PowerPoint as this will remind you about nouns.
If you choose the gold challenge today you will putting adjectives before nouns to create
expanded noun phrases to describe the shoes (we have done this lots of times before).
Today’s activity:
Think about what happened to the shoes in the poem.
Bronze: First draw a picture of the shoes when they were new. List some adjectives around the
shoes to describe them. Then draw a picture of the shoes at the end and list some adjectives
around the shoes to describe them. You might want to borrow adjectives from the poem.
Silver: First draw a picture of the shoes when they were new. Underneath write at least 5
sentences to describe them. Make sure each sentence has at least 1 adjective in. Then draw a
picture of the shoes at the end and write 5 more sentences that describe what they looked like
then. Again, remember to include those adjectives.
Gold: First draw a picture of the shoes when they were new. Underneath write a full description
of them. Please write at least 7 sentences, making sure that as well as using adjectives some of
your sentences include expanded noun phrases. Also, if you vary the way the sentence starts it
will make the description more interesting. For example, don’t start each sentence with; The
shoes are….
Then draw a picture of the shoes at the end and write 7 more sentences that describe what they
looked like then. Again, remember to include those adjectives, expanded noun phrases and
different sentence starters.

Tuesday’s Computing
Today you will try to create a branching database in a lesson called ‘2Question’. It is set
as a ‘To Do’ on Purple Mash. I have set it to be attempted today at any time.
Before you start, it will help if you understand more about what a branching database
is. A branching database is a way of sorting a group of objects by asking yes/no
questions. This is an example:
This might sound a bit complicated or confusing but if you watch the instruction video
it will show you how to complete the activity and also show you an example. This is the
screen you will come to first:
Before you try watch the instruction video- you find it by clicking on this:
I don’t mind if you want try and use the theme of minibeasts like the example in the
video or a different theme. You might choose dinosaurs or types of transport, its up to
you. Or you might choose to try the adventure story example.

English
.
Today I would like you to talk to someone about a pair of your old shoes, or another
item of clothing you have loved for a long time but have outgrown, or it is worn out.
List the things you have done with the piece of clothing, the places you have worn it,
what it looks like, what it feels like, how you feel about it and turn it into a list poem –
it does not need to rhyme. For example:
This Old Coat
This old coat has kept me warm on winter mornings on my way to school.
It has been pulled and tugged and stamped on in the crowded cloakroom.
When I wear my old coat, it feels like a hug and smells like home.
It doesn’t matter if when you write your poem today it is a bit scruffy because
tomorrow your English activity will be to write your finished poem out in neat, on
handwriting paper.
Some things to remember today as you are thinking of your sentences….
• Capital letter at the start of a sentence
• Finger spaces
• Full stop at the end of a sentence
• Include adjectives (describing words)
• Include interesting verbs (action words)
• Use your senses to help you describe- what did it look like, smell like, feel like?

Wednesday’s Spellings activity:
Today’s activity is to use your spelling words in a sentence. For example:
The sun was shining brightly that morning.

Wednesday Science
To start today’s lesson, watch this clip of the book ‘I took a walk’ by Henry Cole being read:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8au_mPa0TKc
This story is all about taking a walk through different habitats, a wood, a meadow, a stream,
and a pond.
There are lots of different types of habitats all over the world.
A habitat is a home environment for plants and animals (including humans) or other
organisms. For example, meerkats and lions like living in grassland habitats rather than in the
chilly Arctic with polar bears and penguins. In the same way, there are places around the
world that are perfect for humans to live and that meet all our needs.
Unlike animals, we humans are able to adapt to different habitats quickly because we can
bundle up in jumpers and blankets if it’s cold, or sit in a paddling pool with an ice lolly if it’s
hot. We are also able to adapt habitats to suit ourselves by building shelter in a hot place or
digging a well for water in a dry place. This means that there are many habitats that humans
can live in, as long as our basic needs for food and water are met.
Today you are going to look at habitats in Britain. Go through the PowerPoint Local Habitats.
Your activity today is to take a walk around your habitat and draw a map of your local
habitat. Draw and label plants, trees, any buildings, and any animal homes.

Please read back through the list poem you wrote yesterday. Check that each sentence makes
sense and starts with a capital letter and finishes with a full stop. Do you have enough adjectives?
When you are sure your poem is ready to copy out neatly write it out below. Imagine Mrs Delany-
White is going to read your poem, how would you like it to look?
To make your handwriting easy to read and neatly presented make sure the letters are the same
size except the tall letters ( b,d,h,k,l,t) which should all stretch up high and the long letters
(f,g,j,p,q,y) which must all go beneath the line. Don’t forget your finger spaces and try to join your
handwriting.

Castle art
Today as part of our topic you will be drawing a castle. I have attached 2 links to YouTube clips that
show you how to draw castles step by step. The first is easier than the second. You can draw which
ever one you prefer. With both you will probably have to keep pausing the video as you go along.
Make sure you keep your drawing as you will need it tomorrow.
You can use what ever drawing equipment you have at home, if you don’t have any colouring pens or
crayons you can leave it a pencil or pen drawing.

Friday 22nd January 2021
English
You have worked hard doing a lot of writing in English this week. Today I would like you to do some
reading. I am going to ask you to read a piece of text about castles and then answer some questions. This
is called reading comprehension. It shows how much you have understood about what you have read. I
have put the sheets in a separate folder and will send it to you so if you are printing at home you don’t
need to print out all three challenges, just the one you are completing. The expected answers are also
included. You can tell which activity is which by looking at the number of stars it has at the bottom.
Bronze =* Silver =** Gold =***
These are some tips to help parents help their children:

Friday’s spelling practise.
Practise your spellings and handwriting by completing the sheet below. Don’t forget to make
your tall letters stretch above the others and your long letters go below the line. I have included
a right- handed sheet first and then the left -handed sheet. Use the one you need to.

Friday -Topic
Today you will need the drawing you created yesterday.
We are going to learn more about castles today. We are going to concentrate on the features of castles.
When I talk about the features of castles, I mean what you would find/ see on most castles if you were to
look closely.
I would like you to use the website http://primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/castles/parts.html and
the Features of a PowerPoint to learn more. Then I would like you to add what you have learnt to your
drawing. Choose your challenge Bronze, Silver or Gold.
Bronze: Label your castle drawing with these castle parts:
• Keep
• Drawbridge
• Moat
• Towers
• Arrow loops
Silver: Label your castle drawing with the following parts, then underneath your drawing, or on a separate
page write a sentence for 5 of the parts you have labelled. For example, The Keep was usually the largest
part of a castle.
• Keep
• Drawbridge
• Gate House
• Portcullis
• Moat
• Bailey
• Battlements
• Arrow Loops
• Towers
Gold: Label your castle drawing with the following parts, and any extras you discover, then underneath
your drawing, or on a separate page write a sentence for each of the parts you have labelled. For
example, The Keep was usually the largest part of a castle.
• Keep
• Drawbridge
• Gate House
• Portcullis
• Moat
• Bailey
• Battlements
• Arrow Loops
• Towers
