Review: E-case iSeries iPad mini case

Posted by: kitwire (http://kitwire.com/author/admin/) , January 4, 2014

Like many iPad mini owners, we’ve come to rely on this little piece of technology in almost every aspect of dailylife. Its a versatile tool for any tech head, allowing us to work / play in situations when a desktop is out of thequestion and a laptop is overkill. Many daily tasks such as email and twitter have been delegated almost 100%to the mini as our weapon of choice, in fact the only way in which we would improve the device would be tomake it more accessible, robust in a manner that it could accompany its owner on days away from the office, away from the sofa.

Where there’s a need, there’s a way so its no surprise that several companies already occupy the market placecatering for this exact situation. For many months we’ve been housing the mini in Griffin’s Military case whichhas served us well. Lugging the mini from home to the office, chucking into a flight bag for travel abroad anddefending against the nemesis of all apple devices……….KIDS . The Griffin offers superb levels of shockprotection and pretty decent protection from dust etc but if your planning to use your tablet outdoors inanything but the driest conditions its not a total solution due its lack of sealing.

We was therefore very happy to receive a sample of the iSeries case from ECase(http://www.cascadedesigns.com/e-case/iseries/ipad-mini/product), part of the Therm-a-rest, Platypus familyof companies. Coming from a stable of such pedigree brands our expectations were high from the onset.

E-case describe the iSeries case as being the perfect partner for your electronic device for use on the beach, bathtub and kitchen but judging by the construction, this case is suitable for way more extreme activities thanjust sunbathing and baking !! The model we received is the midnight blue option which is fairly inconspicuous,it doesn’t shout look at me and it blends in well if you are using your device in an urban environment andtherefore hopefully allowing you to pass unnoticed by anyone wishing to deprive you of your pride and joy. However if we were looking to purchase a case purely for use in the outdoors we’d probably opt for the oneof the brighter colours which would be easier to locate if dropped in the brush.

The majority of the case is made of polyurethane coated polyester with clear non PVC panels for the touchscreen and the rear mounted camera. There is a rubber zip-lock style seal at the bottom, a sealed headphonejack on the side with cable inside and finally there are 4 lash points located in each of the corners.

We wanted to test the water sealing capabilities first as this would be the primary reason for purchasing thiscase so rather than seal it up and submerge in the bath we flipped things around and filled the case up withwater and looked for leaks (please do not do this with your own case as the headphone cable inside is likely tosuffer, we did this only to ensure a thorough test of the product) The obvious points of failure would be theheadphone jack and the main opening but after much waiting, lots of prodding and a lot more waiting, over24 hours in fact, we can report that the E-case did not loose any of its contents through either of these orindeed any of the joints and welds.

After a thorough drying out period we fitted iPad mini inside to check ease of assembly which posed no issueswhatsoever. The E-case fitted the mini with plenty of room to maneuver. The headphone cable fits simply inthe warm and dry but may be the one thing you’ll leave out if wearing gloves or fitting whilst already outside. The clear screens fit exactly over the touch screen and camera so you have no trouble accessing those whenfitted.

Assured that the case was water tight and that function of the mini wouldn’t be impeded we have used thecase in the field for the last couple of months. The weather in the UK since the end of November can bedescribed as anything but pleasant with some of the wettest and windiest conditions the country has seen fordecades. Safe to say then that whilst 2 months is not a full life test, the conditions have certainly provided athorough trial.

In use the case has performed flawlessly, the interior has remained clean and dry with no ingress of moisture. The touch screen and camera have worked perfectly throughout and the lash points have provided a usefulway to suspend the case for ease of handling. All in all this case does what is was designed to.

Retailing at between £30 and £40 in the UK this case comes in at significantly less than the Griffin andrepresents good value for protecting your tablet against moisture. We would recommend this case for beachactivities, camping, hiking and urban adventures especially during the colder, wetter months. For moreextreme activities, mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking should you need to take your tablet with youthen you may want to consider that this case is not specifically designed to offer any shock protection and assuch may not be suitable for you.

E-Case First LookI’ve had my smartphone for a year and I’ve had a few close calls with it getting it wet, dropping it, freezingit, cooking it, killing the battery on day one of my Slioch trip earlier in the year where the alarm feebly andconstantly sounded for two days…Just sitting in my pocket or in a stuffsack hasn’t been entirely successful, so it was very good timing whensome samples from E-Case arrived for review a few weeks back. Below is an eSeries 9 with my SonyXperia inside which fits nice and the screen is still totally usable. Also on test is one for Joycee’s iPhone andone with a waterproof earphone socket for iPod joy at camp, I’ll come back to them all in a wee while.

The case has a welded construction with lanyard attachments cut through the textured material. There’s veryclear windows front and rear and the closure is a SealLock, a rubber zipper type which you close bysqueezing the two halves together. The seal is beefy and it does make the case waterproof, indeed a closedcase takes a good amount of pressure when closed and doesn’t pop which is great for sealing out theweather buy also makes for good protection for my overpriced phone.

It’s been nice pulling my phone out of my pocket and finding it not drenched in condensation the pastcouple of weeks, so the E-Cases will be getting some mileage on them. More later.

I’ve just recently got one of these and I’ve been really impressed. I got the same sized onewhich will take my iPhone with an additional power sleeve to boost battery life. Thiscombo gives me a good GPS and a camera in one package. It works well through the sleeve(even with gloves). Also, that ziplock seal is chunky yet easy to use. I’m not too confident takingpictures with it through the sleeve but it’s quick and easy to pop it out and back in again.

It’ll also fit the iPhone in with a power monkey, so I can multi day with it.

Brilliant kit.

I like the closure, the chunkiness was confidence inducing.Good to hear you’ve had positive experiences, my phone feels safer all the time :o)
