Review – Hummingbird Travel Pak 2 6 November 2013 · by emilyluxton · in Reviews , Travel . · I’ve posted a couple of times about ways to keep your mobile phone waterproof whilst on the road, but what about the rest of your gear? Important, not-so-water-resistant things like your passport, tickets and travel documents, cash or a portable phone charger need protecting from the elements, too. My new Hummingbird Travel Pak (http://www.cascadedesigns.com/hummingbird/travel- bags/travel-pak/product) is perfect for this! It’s a waterproof hip pack that’s perfect for any activity; great news (http://emilyluxton.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/hummingbird_trailpr0_reg_2013.jpg) for me as my trip will take me from the Amazon to the Andes. The pack is made from 600D polyurethane coated polyester, which feels super sturdy and which is, more importantly, water resistant! Before it arrived, I was a bit unsure about how well the Travel Pak would keep out the rain, but the cleverly designed roll-down opening means that water really isn’t getting in. There’s no zip; instead you simply pop in your stuff and roll the top down, then clip it in place with the side clips. So there’s no possibility of leakage in rain or splashes! It will even survive if submerged briefly, so it’s a great way to keep your valuables protected whilst doing something like kayaking.

Coming in a range of bright, funky colours, The Travel Pak is a lot less dorky than the usualbumbag or waist pack. It’s actually pretty cool; I love the bright red colour and the pack

(http://emilyluxton.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/20131123_145758_resized.jpg)looks reallysmart. Better yet, the waist belt is removable, and there are two plastic ‘D’-rings on the back ofthe pack which means it can be fitted with a shoulder strap. So I can easily swap it from a waistpack to a shoulder bag, which is great if I’m heading out and about in cities, but the waist beltis great for hands-free functionality while I’m taking part in outdoor activities! It’s going to befantastic for hiking, keeping useful bits and pieces like my phone easily accessible withouttaking the weight on my shoulders.

My new Travel Pak is pretty small, but it fits a lot. It can easily fit my phone, wallet, a smalldigital camera, and some travel documents – with room to spare! I really like the small frontpocket – great for keeping my phone immediately to hand – and the main compartment is soroomy when it’s unrolled open that I

(http://emilyluxton.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/photo-2.jpg)almost forgot it’s a waist pack!But, once it’s all clipped closed, the pack measures just 8 x 8 x 3 inches; the perfect size for a

few valuables!

I’m hoping to try my hand at a few extreme sports while I’m away next year, includingwhitewater rafting in the Andes, so this is a fantastic addition to my luggage. But even if you’renot going to be particularly active, this totally weather-proof waist pack is fantastic for use incities or at the beach, giving you piece of mind that you’re valuables won’t wind up as wet asyou!

We Say – What a great idea;; an everyday travel wallet that won’t let your documents get wet. In my earlydays of travel I’d always have soggy money or papers thanks to sweat and recently I’ve taken to wrappingeverything in food bags to keep it dry, which is not a bad solution but not perfect. With this wallet though, none of that is going to happen.

The main pocket is large enough for passport, cards, a little cash and the usual insurance and traveldocuments. It’s also completely waterproof and closed with a waterproof seal. All you have to do is ensurethan there’s no bit of paper laying across the seal when you close it. If there is, it won’t keep the water outand there’s a chance it won’t keep your money in as the opening is vertical, not horizontal.

There’s also 3 other pockets, 1 made of see-through mesh closed with a zip, the other 2 are solid anddeep but not sealable. I’m not sure what these 2 might be good for as anything that has to go into mymoney wallet is important and needs to be kept safe. I guess some cash that I want to seperate from mymain stash, but that would probably be in my trouser pocket rather than inside my shirt. Still, better tohave the option of these pockets if you’re not one to wear trousers with decent pockets.

Security-wise, it lays flat to your body and isn’t visible under clothes. If you’re wearing a shirt or a regularV neck t-shirt then the shoulder strap probably won’t show;; it didn’t on me. With a lower cut top it will, although the strap is plain black and would pass for an underwear strap on women.

Comfort;; I’ve worn this for 3 days straight now, out and about, and it hasn’t rubbed at all, or created anydiscomfort.

So, this Hummingbird Round The World Document Pouch is waterproof, roomy enough for my traveldocuments and it’s comfy enough. All in all, this is what a travel wallet should be like.

Hummingbird Swim Pouch

They Say - DISCREET, SUBMERSIBLE PROTECTION FOR PASSPORTS, CASH AND SMALLVALUABLES. This case provides our most discreet, submersible protection for passports, cash and smallvaluables — both from prying eyes and the elements.

We Say – I had thought that this pouch might be more of an everyday backpacking pouch that I couldalso use in the water, rather than just a swim pouch. It would have to be for me to use it, as I’m not likelyto take away 2 travel wallets. After using it for the last few days I’d say that it could indeed be used for allpurposes, as long as you bear in mind that this is not a pouch that is going to be handy to dip into and out

of during the course of a regular day if you’re wearing it under your clothes.

There are 2 pockets;; 1 is a mesh pocket nearest your skin, the other is the main waterproof pocket. Bothare sealed with a sturdy bit of plastic that’s fastened by velcro. It’s very waterproof, but it’s not easyaccess.

In saying that, I have never really needed my travel wallet to be easy to get into during the day time (apartfrom whilst in the bank). Everything that’s in there is just there to stay safe. The money I need for theday’s activities is always seperated in the morning and put in my trousers pocket. I prefer it this way. Thelast thing I want if I’m trying to keep the location of my travel documents a secret is to announce wherethe wallet is by dipping into it whilst in public…

There are 2 ways to fasten the pouch to you. The first is by putting the strap over the same shoulder asthe pouch sits below. It’s held in place by another strap which is much more stretchy. Fastened this waythe pouch can’t be seen at all under your clothes. However, it’s not the best position if you’re being quiteactive as it moves around a bit more than the second way to fasten, which is to have the main strap crossover the body, and then fasten the smaller strap around your midrift.

This felt much more secure. If that all sounds a bit complicated, worry not, a small leaflet comes with thepouch explaining things with the help of diagrams.

A friend borrowed this pouch recently, they were off on a beach holiday. They said it was a great help, they could take out some money for the day and put that in it, along with their keys and a compactcamera, and then join the kids in the sea without worrying about leaving anything of value on the beachtowel.

The final thing to note is that it’s quite comfy. When I’m walking it’s fine, but when I’m sat still I know it’sthere. But that’s a small price to pay for keeping your travel documents safe. I’d say that if you were goingon an active trip, perhaps either by the water or into the tropics, where it’s likely that you’ll sweat and getwet often, or even just on a beach holiday, then this a good choice for you.
