January 2013 The Newsletter of Calvary Baptist Church Volume 153 Issue 1 As I reflect back upon 2012, there are several worship ministry highlights that come to mind: Calvary enjoyed two dynamic Sunday morning worship services led by two separate praise teams. These groups had some new singers, in- strumentalists, and AV personnel. The Lord provided some new acoustic drums audio visual equipment which has aided us tremendously in worship. Our adult choir joined two other choirs in presenting a musical of hope and encouragement to three congregations. Our collegiate ministry started having their Bible study led by Kathy Nelson on Sunday nights in the worship center. Part of this study includes dynamic worship led by a third praise team. There is a great sense of excitement about this transition! College students and adults have joined together for a fresh approach to prayer called the “prayer house” on Wed. nights at 6 :30 p.m. There were some wonderful signing presentations during our morning worship services. Truth in Action, our youth drama team, delivered presentations during morning worship which stirred our hearts. Overflow, our youth praise team, led worship for students twice a week and also led a worship service off campus. This team also acquired some much needed adult leadership. Fourteen volunteers stepped up to lead three childrens choirs which spent the fall learning about worship, hearing devotions, and learning about music. In December these choirs presented a Christmas musical on a Sunday evening in our worship center. What will be your role in Calvary’s worship ministry in 2013? We are always seeking out new singers, instrumentalists, and AV helpers for our praise teams. The adult choir will resume practice on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. beginning January 13 th . If you feel God leading you to use your gifts and talents to lead during our corporate worship services, please contact Cary Tolar. BIBLE GROUPS Are you part of a small Bible study group at Calvary? There are aspects of the Christian life which occur in small groups that a person will never experience alone or just by coming to main worship services. If you are not part of a small group, I urge you to join one soon! Welcome a New Teacher! It is great to have Terry Havins on board as a new teacher in the Co-ed 3 Sunday School class led by Chuck Hixon. Please pray for him as he begins this new journey. Let’s Get Radical Together! Beginning on Sunday January 6 our adult Bible study fellowship groups will be reading and going through discussion questions in Radical Together by David Platt. Each class will meet at its normal time and location and led by its regular teacher(s). One exception is that Trey McGuire and Mark Milstead’s groups will be meeting at the church on Sunday evenings at 5:30 p.m. rather than in homes. This book is really challenging me personally! I pray that you will join in with this effort! Small Group Highlights Sunday mornings Ladies 2, Room 131- this class led by Vickie Hanna meets at 10:30 a.m. This group is de- signed for women ages 40-60’s who love to serve. Vickie coordinates the Comfort Pals ministry through her class. The goal of this ministry is to bring hope and encouragement to children in the hospital by giving them a stuffed animal. Ladies 3, Room 222 this class led by Jane McKean meets at 10:30 a.m. This group is designed for women 60+. This discussion class is known for its ability to care for others, especially its own members. Co-ed 4, Room 127- this class led by Rodney and Beverly Johnson uses videos, specific top- ics, or individual books of the Bible to prompt discussions in learning more about God. This group has adopted some senior adults in a facility outside Calvary for the purpose of min- istering to and encouraging those individuals all throughout the year. -Cary Tolar

Calvary Family, During the month of January, 7th-28th, I'll be serving in Las Vegas with a local church and with Safely Home, a ministry to refugees. God has been moving in my heart for months in the area of missions, and I have spent much time in prayer seeking to follow Him. This summer I read the book "Radical Together". If I had to put into words exactly what God has challenged my heart with over the last several months, these words from the in-troduction of that book say it well. "God has called us to lock arms with one another in single-minded, death-defying obedience to one objective; the declaration of the gospel for the demonstration of His glory to all nations. This is God's design for His people, and it is worth giving our lives to see it ac-complished. It is worth it for the billions of people who do not yet know that Jesus is the grave-conquering, life-giving, all-satisfying King". I am deeply grateful to you, as my family of faith, for allowing me to continue to follow God's leading in my life. Please continue to pray for me to clearly hear God's voice and for me to follow Him in complete obedience. Serving Him Together, Sandra

What is the CCA? The CCA was founded by a group of churches to refer families in Lin-coln Parish with food, clothes, utility payments, fill prescriptions and help with other emergen-

cies that arise. CCA also has a transient pro-gram whereby the sheriff's de-partment issues vouchers to per-sons stranded while traveling through town with lodging, hot meals, gasoline

and transporta-tion. The CCA served over 1,700 families last year, paid over $16,000 in util-ity bills, issued over 76,000 pounds of food, and provided other services. The CCA is Located at: 108 South Bonner Street Office hours are 9am-12 noon, Monday - Friday.

This Month the CCA is in need of EVERYTHING. You can drop it off at the World map in the piano side hall, the church office or the CCA.

CCA’s Mission: In the spirit of Jesus Christ, Christian Community Action ministers to the poor by providing comprehensive services that alleviate suffering, bring hope and change lives.

Pray for

Sandra George as

she serves in Las

Vegas with a local

church and with

Safely Home, a

ministry to refu-

gees in the month of January. She will be in the

mission field, January 7th-28th.
