Happy New Year!

A Solemn OathInauguration Day, held on

Jan. 20 every four years, marksthe moment when the newlyelected president of the UnitedStates formally takes office.Activities include theswearing-in ceremony, thepresident’s inaugural address, aparade and one or moreinaugural balls.

Until 1937, Inauguration Daywas March 4, the last day of thecongressional session. The20th Amendment to theConstitution changed the dateto Jan. 20.

On March 4, 1801, ThomasJefferson became the firstpresident to be inaugurated inWashington, D.C.

The shortest inauguraladdress was given by GeorgeWashington at his secondinauguration. It contained only135 words.

Many famous presidentialphrases came from inauguralspeeches, including Franklin D.Roosevelt’s “The only thing wehave to fear is fear itself” andJohn F. Kennedy’s “Ask notwhat your country can do foryou—ask what you can do foryour country.”

If Jan. 20 is on a Sunday, thepresident takes the oath of officein a private ceremony on thatday, followed by a publicceremony the next day.

Harry S. Truman’sinauguration was the first to betelevised. Truman also reinstatedthe Inaugural Ball in 1949.

Honoré Carter McHugh

Honoré isnamed for thefamous Frenchwriter Honoré deBalzac, becauseher mother

thought the first name soundedfittingly feminine for herdaughter. Interestingly, Honoré‘slate husband of 55 years alsobore a French name: Denis, inlieu of Dennis. They collectedantique furniture and likedlearning about the history of

objects, buildings and art.Honoré and Denis so greatly

enjoyed summers with theirchildren Randy and Denise atMyrtle Beach that they built abeach house in 1980 with a kitfrom Lowe’s and a fewsubcontractors. In 1990, theymoved closer to family nearRaleigh, N.C., where Honorébecame famous for her biscuitsand desserts in their friendlyneighborhood. Denis passedaway in 2000. Five years later,Honoré moved to Woodbridgeto be closer to her children.
