By Bill Vint - PBA
RENO, Nev. – Sweden’s Jesper
Svensson, a 20-year-old two-handed player, won his second
Professional Bowlers Association
Tour title, and first on American
soil, when he defeated Germany’s
Pascal Winternheimer, 267-193,
to win the PBA Chameleon
Championship presented by
HotelPlanner.com at the National
Bowling Stadium.
The Chameleon Championship
aired on ESPN. It was the third of
four “animal pattern” champi-
onships contested during the
GEICO PBA World Series of
Bowling VII presented by Silver
Legacy. It also was the first PBA
Tour event held in the United States
to feature an all-international field of finalists.
“It feels great. I didn’t expect it,” Svensson said. “I
know how hard it is to win over here. This means every-
thing to me; it’s really what I want to do.”
Svensson, a slender 6-foot-3 158-pound rookie,
defeated England’s Stuart Williams, 245-188, in their
semifinal round match while Winternheimer, bowling in
his first PBA World Series, eliminated Denmark’s
Thomas Larsen, 235-216, in the other semifinal match.
After an admitted nervous lapse in failing to convert a
3-5-6-10 spare attempt in his opening frame against
Williams, Svensson went on a
strike binge, throwing seven strikes
in an eight-frame run to race awayfrom Williams and then throwing
nine strikes in his first 11 attempts
against Winternheimer.
With his win, Svensson became
the only PBA Tour rookie to win
two titles in 2015. Earlier in the
year, he captured the 13th Kingdom
of Bahrain Open in Sitra, Bahrain,
a PBA International Tour event.
“The biggest difference between
winning here and in Europe is there
are so many good bowlers here,”
Svensson said. “To be able to win
here is the biggest thing that has
ever happened to me. I was a bit
nervous at the start, but I was able
to clear my mind and throw a cou-
ple of good shots.”
Like the majority of emerging two-handed players,
Svensson began bowling with both hands as a toddler,
but he is young enough that he was able to learn from
other two-handed players who were beginning to estab-
lish themselves in the global bowling arena.
“I grew up watching the two-handers – (Finland’s)
Osku (Palermaa) and Belmo (Australia’s Jason
Belmonte) – as soon as I was old enough to use a com-
puter,” he said. “I watched them on YouTube, maybe
when I was around 10.”

RENO, Nev. – The two-time
defending Professional Bowlers
Association League champion
Silver Lake Atom Splitters will
make their bid for an Elias Cup
“three-peat” in 2016 with a roster
led by Chris Barnes, Dick Allen
and Tom Daugherty, and complet-
ed when manager Mark Baker
added PBA Rookie of the Year
contender Matt McNiel and youngSwedish two-handed star Jesper
Svensson to complete his lineup.
PBA League rosters were filled
during the GEICO PBA World
Series of Bowling VII presented
by Silver Legacy when each of the
eight team managers draft two
players in a serpentine draft in the
reverse order of how they finished
in 2015. Earlier in the fall, each
manager had protected three play-
ers from their 2015 rosters.
The first highlight of the draft was
the selection of two women who
have had success in PBA competi-
tion in addition to the newly-
revived Professional Women’s
Bowling Association. PWBA
Player of the Year Liz Johnson of
Cheektowaga, N.Y., the winner of
the 2015 USBC Queens and
Bowlmor AMF U.S. Women’s
Open, and the only woman ever toadvance to two PBA television
finals, was selected in the final
round of the draft by Portland
Lumberjacks manager Tim Mack.
With the next-to-last pick in the
draft, Barbasol Motown Muscle
manager Del Ballard Jr. added
PWBA Tour Championship and
recent PBA Regional titlist
Danielle McEwan of Stony Point,
N.Y., to his roster.
But before the final pick of the
draft, Dallas Strikers’ player-man-
ager Norm Duke pulled off a trade
with Portland, sending red-hot
left-hander Ryan Ciminelli of
Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Johnson
to Portland in exchange for Texas
two-hander Shawn Maldonado
and North Carolina’s BJ Moore
III.
The first player off the draft board,
which consisted of more than 60PBA members who had expressed
their desire to be part of the 2016
draft, was 2014 PBA Rookie of the
Year Marshall Kent of Yakima,
Wash., by GEICO New York City
WTT KingPins manager Carolyn
Dorin-Ballard. Motown then
selected 18-year-old two-handed
player Anthony Simonsen of
Princeton, Texas. Third was the
Dallas Strikers who picked
Ciminelli. Picking fourth,
Philadelphia Hitmen manager
Jason Couch selected veteran Tom
Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich. The
newly-named Portland
Lumberjacks selected Maldonado.
Brooklyn Styles manager Johnny
Petraglia, represented at the draft
by PBA Hall of Famer Parker
Bohn III, picked veteran Jason
Sterner of Covington, Ga. Last
year’s runner-up, L.A. X under manager Andrew Cain, added vet-
eran left-hander Patrick Allen of
Mount Kisco, N.Y. Silver Lake
completed the round by picking
rookie Matt McNiel of Prior Lake,
Minn.
The final round of picks prior to
the last-minute trade included
Swedish two-hander Jesper
Svensson (Silver Lake),
Colombia’s Andres Gomez (L.A.
X), Rhode Island’s Jon VanHees
(Brooklyn), North Carolina’s B.J.
Moore (Portland), Ohio’s David
Wodka (Philadelphia), Liz
Johnson (Dallas), McEwan
(Motown) and the KingPins, with
the final pick, selected New York
native John Szczerbinski.
Johnson and McEwan became the
second and third women selected
for PBA League competition.
Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., was picked for the inaugural 2013
PBAL season by Los Angeles and
subsequently traded to New York
City.
The PBA League will return to
Portland, Maine, for two days of
competition on April 2 and 3 for
delayed telecast over a span of
four consecutive Sundays, April
17-May 8, on ESPN. All four PBA
League shows will air at 1 p.m.
ET.

O OWL
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ - Of the
one hundred thirteen boys and
sixty-seven girls entered in the
16th Annual North Jersey
Singles qualifying round, forty
boys and twenty-four g irls man-
aged to make the respective 559
and 487 three-game cutoff
scores, advancing them to the
pres sure -fi lle d single -game
playoffs.
Receiving a bye into the boys
quarterfinals were Passaic Tech
senior IsiahTolbert with an
astounding 773, Montville jun-
ior Erik Kattermann 738,
Passaic Tech senior Anthony
Rizzo 708 and Ridgefield Park
sophomore Derek Lewandowski
697 who had a higher best game
than Indian Hills junior Jared
Duncan who also scored 697.
Girls who earned byes were
Hopatcong sophomore Rhianna
Smith 687, St Mary’s Alize
Stevenson 657 and Northern
Highlands senior Allie
Woodhouse 609. As the top
qualifiers, Tolbert and Smith
earned a second bye into the
semi-finals.
In these heart-stopping single-
game playoffs, the advancement
cutoffs were remarkably high,
advancing to the boys quarter-
finals were scores of 224+, to
the semis, 223+, for the girls,
194 to the quarters and an amaz-
ing 226 to the semis.
All four girls’ semi-finalists
fired deuces, Paramus Catholic
junior Kristen Kane smoked the
lanes with 268, Rhianna Smith
212, Raritan’s Hayley Connolly
205 and Hawthorne junior
Madison Perry 201.
In the girls’ championship
match, southpaw Smith fash-
ioned a mid-game turkey to dis-
tance herself from Kane and
emerge the winner, 192-170.
The boys’ matchup featured
last year’s runner-up Tolbert
against reigning state individual
champion, Pompton Lakes jun-
ior Nick Cilento. The match was
magical, with each perfect
through seven frames, leaving
the spectators stunned at the
incredible talent to which they
were a witness. Cilento finished
with three spares and a strike fill
for 256, hoping for a chink in
southpaw Tolbert’s delivery….it
didn’t happen, although
Tolbert’s first ever perfect game
had tenth frame drama, appear-
ing to have left the six-pin on his
eleventh delivery, a fallen pin
rolled back, taking the six-pin
out just before the rack came
down. His nerve-wracked
twelfth shot crossed, temporari-
ly showing the 5-7 before both
pins coll apsed to the roaring
delight of everyone.
Congratulations to this year’s
North Jersey Singles winners ,
both lefthanders, and to all the
part icipants for displaying
extraordinary skill levels.
