top-flightcompetitorandchartermember;hewasthe
firstcollegiatebowlerintheUnitedStatestobowlan
800series.Buthislegacyoffthelanesfarsurpassed
hiscredentialsasaplayerasheevolvedintothemost
prolificbowlingwriterinhistory.
Hisweeklybowlingcolumnhasbeenpublishedin
The Record in Hackensack, N.J., every week for
morethan50years.Hehaswrittenstoriesforevery
leadingbowling publicationin thecountry.Hehas
writtenbooks,workedasaconsultantontelevision,
movie and instructional videos, and traveled the
countryserving as an emcee andguest speaker at
hundredsofbowlingfunctions.Andtothisday,hisnationally-syndicated columns appear in bowling
publicationsacrossAmerica.
PezzanoalsowasheavilyinvolvedinPBAbusiness
affairs,runningthePBAEastRegionfor20years.He
wassecretaryofthePBAHallofFamefornearly20
years,andservedastheorganization’sofficialhisto-
rianforlongerthanthat.
PezzanoandfellowNewJerseyentrepreneurFrank
Esposito–whotogethercreatedthe PBARegional
program – were the first Meritorious Service
inducteesintheinauguralPBAHallofFameclassin
1975. He was elected to the American Bowling
CongressHallofFamein1982,andwasrecipientof
theBowlingWritersAssociationofAmerica’sLuby
HallofFameAwardin1974.That’sjustasmallsam-
plingoftheawardshehaswon.

Firestone,” Pezzano said. “(The Tournament of
Champions,sponsoredbyFirestonefor29years)was
farabovetheotherevents.Fromawriter’sviewpoint,
itprovidedeverythingyouneeded,andthat’swhyit
hasbeenthebesteventinhistoryfromthestart.
“Iappreciateditbecauseitgavemeanopportunity
tomeetandgettoknowthegreatestplayersinthe
country,alongwith alot ofnewsmediaguyswhoweren’t necessarilyassigned to bowling,” Pezzano
continued.“TheTOCputbowlersonthesameplane
withotherathletes.Intheearlyyears,firstprizewas
$25,000andsomeofthegreatestplayersinbaseball
onlymade$40,000.”
The2011TournamentofChampionswillawarda
$250,000topprizeaspartofaPBA-record$1mil-
lionprizefund.
“Every writer who covered the Tournament of
Championshadtolookforsomethingbeyondwhat
happenedonthelanes.Itcouldbewhetherornotthe
oldveteranwouldlastuntiltheend,astoryaboutthe
newkid on theblock,theMike Durbins(the first
three-timeTOCwinner)whowerealwaysunderrat-
ed,ortheso-calleddiscoveryofaDickRitger,who
reallywasoneofthegreatestbowlersofalltime,but
nevergotthecredituntilpeoplesawhimbowlintheTournamentofChampions.”

Bryan Kist Wins MontvaleJunior Singles Event

MONTVALE, NJ - In a race that came down to the last game, Bryan
Kist shot scores of 234, 212 and 201 for a 647 series and a one point
victory in the Montvale Singles fall season. Second place points were
tied, with Ray Lavender, who had a 177, 203, 187 and 567 series the
final week, taking the position based on total wood. Third place went to
Eric Sibbald. Eric shot scores of 168, 195 and 226 for 589 in his bid for
the champion's spot.
Other good scores from the week were shot by Dan Wuhrman bowl-
ing 279, 179, 226 for a 684 series, Brent DeLeon 223, 216 183 for 620,
Brian O'Flaherty with 223 and 221 and Bobby McCarthy with a 217
and 214.
In the Strikers league, the champions going away was the team of
Matt Macchione, Davis Badaszewski, Ryan Angele, and Freddie DeVivo, finishing with a seven point sweep in the final week and a 13
point lead over the rest of the field. Davis lead the way with scores of
161 and 149. Some other good games were shot by Justin Schwartz,
192, Sean Verillo, 187, and Jillian Holmsen, 174.
Team Amanda scampered off with the honors in the Power Preps
league. Amanda Dembeck and Amanda Madara outclassed the rest by
eleven points, with Amanda Dembeck closing the season with a 143
game while teammate Amanda Madara shot a 92.
All three leagues will start the spring season on January 8, 2011.
