Is your prayer life characterized by such things as sincerity, urgency, and delight? Engagement in prayer is a vital part of our communion with God, making a profound impact on our growth in grace. “The ancient formula, ‘the law of praying is the law of believing’ (lex orandi, lex credendi), or, using other words, the way we pray determines what we believe, expresses an important but forgotten truth. To this adage we would add ‘the law of living’ (lex vivendi), that is, the way we pray determines the way we live. The strength of Developing a Healthy Prayer Life is that its 31 studies treat prayer not as an aspect of the Christian life, but as the Christian life itself. The Christian life is a life of humble, submissive, patient, persevering, trusting, thanking, wrestling, waiting, working, reverent, fervent, constant, dependent, contented, and thought-ful praying and living. As we pray, so we live, and as we live, so we pray. We have needed a book that comprehensively, yet simply, teaches us to pray, not by techniques (though some how-to’s are helpful), but by uniting prayer in the presence of God with life in the presence of God; that shows us how dependent and reverent living arises out of dependent and rever-ent praying. Developing a Healthy Prayer Life is just the book to help us to unite our praying and our living in a Christ-honoring whole.” —Terry Johnson, Senior Minister of Independent Presbyterian Church

in Savannah, Georgia, and author of The Family Worship Book

“I wish this book providentially had fallen into my hands fifty years ago when I was a young Christian, but now I have it and have profited from it, realizing that its lessons, basic, true, and energizing, are relevant for disciples of the Lord Jesus at every age.”

A Portrait of Paul:Identifying a True Minister of ChristRob Ventura and Jeremy WalkerForeword by Joel R. Beeke

DEsCRIPTIoNWhat does a true pastor look like, and what constitutes a faithful min-istry? How can we identify the life and labors of one called by God to serve in the church of Jesus Christ? To address these questions, Rob Ventura and Jeremy Walker examine how the apostle Paul describes his pastoral relation to the people of God in Colossians 1:24–2:5. By discussing these essential attitudes, qualities, and characteristics of a faithful minister of Christ, A Portrait of Paul provides gospel ministers an example of what they should be, and demonstrates for churches the kind of pastors they will seek if they desire men after God’s own heart.

sing a New song:Recovering Psalm singing for the Twenty-First CenturyEdited by Joel R. Beeke and Anthony SelvaggioForeword by W. Robert Godfrey

DEsCRIPTIoN

The book of Psalms occupies a unique place in Scripture, being both the Word from God and words to God from His people. Unfortunately, psalm singing no longer plays an integral part of worship in most evan-gelical churches. In this book, thirteen well-respected scholars urge the church to rediscover the treasure of the Psalms as they examine the his-tory of psalm singing in the church, present biblical reasons for the litur-gical practice, and articulate the practical value it provides us today.

ENDoRsEMENTs

“This volume explores the rich historical, biblical, theological, and pas-toral contexts that inform a commitment to the prayerful use of biblical psalms in Christian worship today. The book challenges those who sing psalms exclusively to understand the strengths of their tradition. It chal-lenges those who sing hymns primarily to reconsider their neglect of the Psalms. Above all, the volume invites all readers to reconsider the beauty of biblically shaped prayer and the astonishing grace offered us by a God who not only calls us to offer worship but also guides and inspires us in learning how to worship.”

— John D. WiTvlieT, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Calvin Collegeand Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

“It is sad that much of the contemporary church does not know her own history of worship and how vital the singing of psalms has been to her worship. This book not only lays out that history but provides biblical, theological, and christological reasons that show the benefit of singing psalms today. A recovery of psalm singing in worship will enable God’s people to express themselves fully in worship, not only by singing the hymns of praise but also by expressing the sorrows and struggles of life through the laments. This book is not just for those who want to exclu-sively sing the psalms but will be beneficial to everyone who wants to enrich their worship through the singing of psalms.”

Word, Water, and spirit:A Reformed Perspective on BaptismJ.V. Fesko

ENDoRsEMENTs

“Th is book represents a substantial accomplishment, one that provides a useful resource for those wanting to deepen their understanding of the sacraments, particularly baptism. Refl ecting a massive amount of research against the background of an in-depth survey of various views of baptism in church history, Fesko provides an extensive exegetical and biblical-theological study of the covenantal and eschatological signifi -cance of baptism followed by systematic theological refl ections on key issues like baptism as a means of grace, the effi cacy of baptism, the bibli-cal warrant for infant baptism (and against paedocommunion), and the importance of baptism for the church. One need not agree with Dr. Fesko at every point to benefi t from his considerable labors.”

— richarD B. Gaffin, Jr., Professor of Biblical and Systematic Th eology, Emeritus, Westminster Th eological Seminary

“On a wide-ranging canvas and with bold strokes, J. V. Fesko gives us a study of baptism which joins a treasury of theological citations with strong theological insights. After a survey of the history of the doctrine, Fesko focuses on the Reformed tradition and its important fi gures and confessions. He indicates the biblical dimensions of the meanings of baptism and provides a positive and constructive statement of its theo-logical truth. Th is is a valuable work for its mastery of primary sources as well as its clear articulation of the covenantal dimensions which give a Reformed theology of baptism such power and purpose for Christian believers.” — DonalD k. mckim, Editor, Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith

“J. V. Fesko’s Word, Water, and Spirit is a major work that both models how to do theology by moving from historical theology to biblical and systematic theology and, most importantly, presents fresh insights for a Reformed understanding of baptism. Fesko’s fair-minded, page-turning history of the doctrine of baptism is itself worth the price of the book. Most enlightening, however, is his biblical-theological survey of bap-tism as new creation, covenant judgment, and eschatological judgment.

Th e book’s emphasis on God’s judgment in baptism is particularly innovative and helpful. Th ese insights pave the way for treating baptism systematically as a means of grace and as a sacrament in relation to its recipients and ecclesiology. Highly recommended for all who wish to grapple seriously with the doctrine of baptism and its implications.”

— Joel r. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Th eological Seminary

He has also taught systematic theology for Reformed Th eological Seminary for over eight years as a part-time professor. Milk and HoneyEdited by Joel R. Beeke

DEsCRIPTIoNIn the Bible, “milk and honey” speaks of God’s bountiful provision and symbolizes our basic need for solid spiritual food and sweet communion with the triune God through Christ. With that in mind, this devotional book dwells on God’s sustaining grace revealed throughout Scripture. Unlike some daily devotional books that are an assortment of medita-tions with no thematic structure, Milk and Honey provides brief devo-tional thoughts that cover the major contours of Scripture in the course of a year. Bible books are divided among twelve pastors so that each month covers a particular portion of Scripture. The result is a devotional survey of the Bible by able expositors of God’s Word.

ENDoRsEMENTs“I am confident that Milk and Honey will meet the needs of those read-ers who are looking for a daily spiritual resource that offers more than most devotionals available today. Here we have the product of not one, but twelve like-minded ministers from different denominations who have taken up the task of providing wholesome food for people with various spiritual needs. I am impressed with the vast array of subjects that the authors have covered and the competent way in which they deal with some very sensitive spiritual matters. May the Lord bless the combined labors of these faithful pastors to the salvation and spiritual growth of many in whose hands this book may fall.”

— cornelis Pronk, Emeritus Pastor of the Free ReformedChurch of Brantford, Ontario

“‘The next best thing to being wise oneself,’ someone once said, ‘is to surround yourself with those who are.’ To begin or end each day with these judicious devotional sound bites will accomplish just that — they will teach you the way of wisdom. Issuing as it does from a trusted source, Milk and Honey is, as they say, a sure thing. Insightful and experi-ential, these daily readings provide an ideal accompaniment to personal or family devotions.”

— Derek W. h. Thomas, Minister of Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi

“God’s pilgrim people, journeying through this wilderness world, daily look up to heaven, only to be supplied with a portion of manna, which is Christ ministered to us through the written Word, and a supply of water, even those reviving and refreshing streams of the Holy Spirit proceeding from Christ our Rock. Here, in this new and most excellent book of readings written by various able and highly respected men of the Reformed persuasion, we have perceptive and helpful comments on numerous bibli-cal texts covering a whole range of revealed truth. These comments are at times enhanced by well-chosen quotations from such past worthies as Thomas Watson and Samuel Rutherford. The happy result, evident throughout, is orthodox teaching that blends doctrine, practice, and experience together. The book is a delight to read. Heartily and unreservedly I commend it to all who wish to go forth and gather the heavenly manna and quench their thirst with the spiritual waters of life and salvation.”

The 17:18 seriesRob Wynalda

WHy THE 17:18 sERIEs?In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving fi nal instructions concerning the future of Israel. As a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deuteronomy) from the “scroll publishing house,” but to hand write his own copy of the law.

Th irty-four hundred years later, educators are “discovering” that students that physi-cally write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than simply hearing or visually reading the information. Apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books.

HoW To usE THEsE BooKsEach book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. You will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. Th is should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page to write your own notes and comments. From time to time a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aid in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.

ENDoRsEMENTs“Th ere is an old proverb that says ‘Th oughts disentangle themselves when passing over the lips and through the fi nger tips.’ Th e 17:18 Series which encourages us to actually write out the words of Scripture will be a tremendous tool in putting that proverb into action in our daily lives. I am happy to commend this project.

— Jerry BriDGes, author of Th e Pursuit of Holiness

“Several years ago I read an article about copying the Scriptures by hand. I tried it with the Pastoral Epistles, writing out all three books with a fountain pen in my journal, and found it a profi table exercise. I am glad to see this series of journals appear, and I hope they are widely used.”

Christians Get Depressed Too:Help and Hope for Depressed PeopleDavid P. Murray

DEsCRIPTIoNMany Christians mistakenly believe that true Christians don’t get depressed, and this misconception heaps additional pain and guilt onto Christians who are suff ering from mental and emotional distress. Author David P. Murray comes to the defense of depressed Christians, asserting that Christians do get depressed! He explains why and how Christians should study depression, what depression is, and the approaches care-givers, pastors, and churches can take to help those who are suff ering from it. With clarity and wise biblical insight, Dr. Murray off ers help and hope to those suff ering from depression, the family members and friends who care for them, and pastors ministering to these wounded members of their fl ock.

ENDoRsEMENTs“I heartily commend this new and helpful book on depression and psychiatric illness. It is the condensed result of much reading and pastoral wisdom, digested into a few non-technical chapters. It is full of Christian love for those who suff er in this way and who need our utmost compassion and tactful sympathy. I wish I had known the things written in these pages when I was a much younger minister.”

— maurice roBerTs, Minister of the Inverness congregation of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing)

“If I felt depressed, Christians Get Depressed Too is the fi rst place I would turn. If I had a family or church member fi ghting depression, it is the fi rst book I would hand out. Th is clear, concise, and com-passionate book by my esteemed colleague, Dr. David Murray, who has worked in pastoral ministry with many depressed Christians, is disarmingly simple and eminently practical. In these few pages cover-ing the crisis, complexity, condition, causes, and cures of depression, together with advice for the caregiver, you will fi nd a world of sound, wise, scriptural advice for handling a variety of cases of depression. If you fi ght depression, read and re-read this usable, balanced, and timely book; if you don’t fi ght depression, read it to be informed how to relate to your friends that do, and give a copy to each of them.”

A spiritual Appeal to Christ’s BrideJodocus van LodensteinTranslated by Bartel ElshoutEdited by Joel R. Beeke

DEsCRIPTIoN

A Spiritual Appeal to Christ’s Bride consists of nine sermons preached by Jodocus van Lodenstein, one of the most prominent leaders of the Dutch Further Reformation. The sermons stress themes that are dear to the preacher’s heart: the need for the Holy Spirit to carry the Reformation further than the mind, the need for perpetual reformation and growth in piety, the need to cultivate holiness and self-denial, and the need to know and experience as Christ’s bride an intimate spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ the perfect Bridegroom. The book calls nominal Christians to a more profound commitment to Christ, stress-ing that only such a commitment can deliver the church from shallow-ness and unholiness. Today, more than ever, the church needs to heed this call to awaken from its spiritual slumber.

ENDoRsEMENTs“I am so pleased that these Dutch classics are now available to a wide audience. The writings of the Dutch Further Reformation—almost completely inaccessible until now to the English-speaking world — are a gold mine of spiritual wisdom.”

— richarD J. mouW, president, Fuller Theological Seminary

“I am delighted that the Dutch Reformed Translation Society is at last making this material available in the English language. It is a landmark feature of our Reformed heritage, and it is rich food for the soul in this or any other age.” — J. i. Packer, Regent College

“Many will surely welcome this new access to the Dutch authors whose strong writings put faith and certainty into generations of their fellow countrymen. By their closeness to Scripture and their concern for heart and head (heat and light), they remain of enduring value.”

— iain h. murray, author of The Puritan Hope

Moses’ self-DenialJeremiah BurroughsEdited by Don Kistler

DEsCRIPTIoNReflecting on Hebrews 11:24–25, Jeremiah Burroughs ponders how Moses relinquished his noble and comfortable rights as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter to find greater honor as a suffering son of Abraham. Burroughs explains how Christians are called to deny all honors, privi-leges, and delights for the sake of Christ. He also shows how God is especially honored when we forgo selfish desires at a time when they seem most advantageous to us. You will benefit greatly to see how faith acts to transform losses caused by self-denial into true honor. This is an insightful, practical book — a helpful antidote for our natural selfishness.

ENDoRsEMENTs“Every new believer, upon first reading the Gospels, is gripped by Jesus’ stark calls for self-denial. Yet self-denial, biblically framed, is not mere asceticism; it is an exchange of our sin-riddled wills for a higher, bet-ter, and purer will. Jeremiah Burroughs has served us well through this book by providing a needed corrective for a church tempted to value pleasures, honors, and wealth more than Christ. He asks, ‘What is my honor...my life, so long as God may be glorified?’ He adds, ‘If God’s honor is not precious in my eyes, what makes me think my honor will be precious in His?’ Burroughs points us to the source of true delight, God Himself. I am pleased to heartily recommend this book, praying that it will challenge your soul as it has mine.”

—PhilliP simPson, author of A Life of Gospel Peace:A Biography of Jeremiah Burroughs

“Reader, if you would have two heavens — to live in heaven on earth and go to heaven at death — study this book of self-denial.”

—William Greenhill (1598–1671), Puritan ministerand friend of Jeremiah Burroughs

ABouT THE AuTHoRDuring his life, Jeremiah Burroughs was loved for his preaching and gentle spirit and was persecuted for his non-conformity to the Church of England. Feeling compelled to flee to Holland for a time, he eventu-ally returned to England and preached to congregations in Stepney and Cripplegate in London, two of the largest congregations in England. He also served as a member of the Westminster Assembly until his death in 1646.

Burroughs organizes his material around seven major thoughts: (1) there is more evil in the least sin than in the greatest affliction; (2) sin and God are contrary to each other; (3) sin is directly against our good; (4) sin opposes all that is good; (5) sin is the evil of all other evils; (6) sin has infinite dimen-sion and character; and (7) sin makes us comfortable with the devil. This treatise is invaluable for sensitizing our consciences to the “exceeding sinfulness of sin” (cf. Rom. 7:13). (HC, ISBN: 1877611484, 345 pages) $24.00 | $18.00

The Hymns of Philip DoddridgeCompiled and Edited byGraham C. Ashworth

DEsCRIPTIoNPhilip Doddridge is best known today for The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul, and perhaps by some for his Family Expositor, which is an extensive commentary on and paraphrase of the New Testament. He also served as principal of an important ministerial academy for non-conforming churches. However, one part of Doddridge’s legacy that has been sorely neglected in recent years is his hymns. This book contains 375 of Doddridge’s hymns, which provide poetic reflection on Old Testament texts, New Testament texts, and various occasions pertaining to Christians and the church. It also includes a timeline of Doddridge’s life, a number of helpful indexes, and various compatible hymn tunes.

ENDoRsEMENTs“Philip Doddridge was one of the greatest of English Dissenters of the eighteenth century — capable, orthodox, and supportive of evangelicals. His hymns, however, have fallen into disuse. Yet, according to the his-torian Bernard Lord Manning, they are, with those of Isaac Watts, ‘the crowning glory of Independent hymnology.’ It is a pleasure to see them reissued in this book.” — DaviD BeBBinGTon, Professor of History, University of Stirling, Scotland

“Philip Doddridge’s hymns have been compared to Jacob’s ladder. They begin on earth and end in heaven. We may trace this principle through-out this collection and find here many an antidote to our human need as Doddridge lifts our eyes to view our circumstances in the light of that eternal world to come. This republication of one of Doddridge’s most enduring contributions is a spiritual tonic for our day.”

— faiTh cook, author of Our Hymn Writers and Their Hymns

“Though overshadowed by Watts and Wesley, the two giants of 18th-century hymnody, Philip Doddridge was a great hymn writer in his own right. As such, it is a tremendous boon to contemporary evangelical spirituality to have these hymns back in print. They have been past vehi-cles of praise and piety — may this book enable them to be so again.”— michael a. G. haykin, Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality,

The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

“It is exciting to see the hymns of Philip Doddridge back in print after nearly 250 years. They are a rich mine of devotional theology and theological devotion. They will repay careful study and regular use.” — roBerT sTrivens, Principal, London Theological Seminary

Introduction to Reformed scholasticismWillem van Asselt, et al.

Th is work supplies a long-standing need in the fi eld of early modern studies by providing a basic introduction to Reformed scholasticism. Although technical studies abound and interest in the subject continues to rise, until the appearance of this work by Willem van Asselt and his col-leagues, students of history have lacked a concise guide to help them navigate the diffi cult waters of Reformed scholasticism. Th is book carefully defi nes the phenomena of scholasticism and ortho-doxy, concisely surveys the era, notes the most signifi cant thinkers together with the various tra-jectories of thought, and references the relevant secondary scholarship. In short, Introduction to Reformed Scholasticism surveys the topic and provides a guide for further study in early modern Reformed thought.

Preaching in the Holy spiritAlbert N. Martin

Good pastors pray for the Holy Spirit’s help in preparing biblical sermons that will ade-quately feed God’s sheep. Th ey also hope for the Spirit’s work in the hearts of the hearers so that they eff ectively receive the preached Word. But are these the only ways that preachers must depend on the Spirit in their preaching? In this book, Albert Martin reminds gospel ministers of their need to rely on the Holy Spirit as they proclaim God’s Word. He explains the necessity of the agency and operations of the Holy Spirit, describes its specifi c manifes-tations, and discusses ways it is restrained or diminished. Here is a prophetic call to reliance on God in the very act of proclaiming His Word.

stop Loving the WorldWilliam Greenhill

Th e Puritans were greatly concerned with suppressing worldliness in the church. Today, worldli-ness is an even greater problem, exacerbated by the fact that so few dare to speak out against it. In this book, William Greenhill provides modern readers with a healthy antidote to our love aff air with the world. He explains what it means to love the world, exposes the dangers of cherishing it, shares how we ought to relate to it, and gives encouraging directions for removing our hearts from it. Th is is a book with a timeless message, demonstrating the relevance of the Puritans for today. By God’s grace, it will persuade you that the world and all its charms are not what you should live for.

A Life of Gospel Peace: A Biography of Jeremiah BurroughsPhillip Simpson

Th e writings of Jeremiah Burroughs are some of the most readable and engaging Puritan works available. Like his Puritan colleagues, Burroughs sought to explain biblical teaching in a heart-searching manner. In this biography, Phillip Simpson opens a window into the life and times of Burroughs, providing the context for his memorable sermons and writings. What becomes apparent is Burroughs’s consistent application of the principles he preached to the conduct of his life. An ardent call for a gospel-driven life and a peaceable character is refl ected in both his books and life, which stand out remarkably in an era of turmoil and revolution. Th is is the fi rst book-length biography of Jeremiah Burroughs.

Piety’s WisdomJ. Mark BeachAlthough works exist that either offer an analysis of Calvin’s views or serve as a guide to his Institutes, none fully share the aim of J. Mark Beach’s Piety’s Wisdom. Keeping to the form, shape, and tenor of Calvin’s own work, Piety’s Wisdom offers busy pas-tors, seminarians, interested college students, and moti-

vated laypersons a book that presents Calvin on his own terms. This summary can be used as an introduction to the Christian faith, as a primer for the study of Calvin, or a combination of each.

“Mark Beach’s Piety’s Wisdom provides a finely done sum-mary and analysis of Calvin’s Institutes that should be of considerable service to Christian laity, pastors, and stu-dents in coming to terms with the thought of the Genevan Reformer. Beach writes clearly and concisely, and with con-siderable insight into Calvin’s thought. The book includes a short biographical sketch and a contextual introduction to the Institutes. It stands as one of the best and most trust-worthy introductions to Calvin presently available.”

—Richard A. Muller, P. J. Zondervan Professor of Historical Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, MI

“J. Mark Beach has provided us with a concise guide to Calvin’s Institutes that succeeds in identifying its contours and emphases. Calvin’s magnum opus can prove tricky for the uninitiated and this volume will be invaluable as a quick and precise summary of the Reformer’s thought. An ideal accompaniment for those eager to get their teeth into one of the most important theological texts ever written.”— Derek W. H. Thomas, John E. Richards Professor of Systematic

and Practical Theology, RTS ( Jackson), and Minister ofTeaching, First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS

“Though road maps (or a GPS) are no substitute for the experience of traveling through the country side, they can be a great help to the traveler in identifying the best route and the highpoints of the trip. J. Mark Beach’s Piety’s Wisdom is such a help for the reader who hopes to travel or navigate his or her way through Calvin’s great exposition of the Christian faith, The Institutes. Written for the gen-eral reader, Beach offers a useful guide that identifies the important landmarks, points the way through, and thereby whets the reader’s appetite for a first-hand acquaintance with Calvin’s theology.”

Meet the PuritansJoel R. Beeke and Randall J. Pederson

“Th e Puritans — English, Scottish, American, and Dutch—are being read again! In an era of superfi cial dis-cipleship and erratic, impotent, ailing, and dying churches, this is indeed a hopeful sign. And this wide-ranging hand-book of backup information about the writers themselves, their special strengths, and modern reprints of their books, is another hopeful sign. Meet the Puritans is a fascinating compendium, scholarly yet popular and accessible, that Puritan-lovers will value very highly—and justly so.”

— Dr. James I. Packer “Th e recent revival in interest in and commitment to the truths of Reformed theology is due in large measure to the rediscovery of Puritan literature. Th e Puritans of old have become the prophets for our time. Th is volume is a treasure for the church.” — Dr. R. C. Sproul

“As furnaces burn with ancient coal and not with the leaves that fall from today’s trees, so my heart is kindled with the fi ery substance I fi nd in the old Scripture-steeped sermons of Puritan pastors. A warm thanks to the authors of Meet the Puritans for all the labor to make them known.”

— Dr. John Piper “Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson have given us a priceless treasure in this introduction to the Puritans and Puritan literature. I have often wished for just such a resource. For the novice lay person who wants a reliable introduc-tion to the Puritans, this is the perfect handbook. And for the seasoned scholar seeking a catalogue of the best avail-able Puritan literature, this is also an indispensable tool. My prayer is that it will help spark a new wave of inter-est in the Puritans, a new appreciation for their theology, and especially a revival of their passion for careful biblical exposition.” — Dr. John MacArthur

A spiritual Appeal to Christ’s BrideJodocus Van LodensteinA Spiritual Appeal to Christ’s Bride consists of nine sermons preached by Jodocus van Lodenstein, one of the most prominent leaders of the Dutch Further Reformation. The sermons stress themes that are dear to the preacher’s heart: the need for the Holy Spirit to carry the Reformation further than the mind, the need for perpetual reforma-tion and growth in piety, the need to cultivate holiness and self-denial, and the need to know and experience as Christ’s bride an intimate spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ the perfect Bridegroom. The Happiness of Heaven Maurice Roberts

While belief in heaven is essential to the Christian faith, the fact that pilgrim believers have not yet experienced heaven leaves us with many questions about what it will be like. In Th e Happiness of Heaven, Maurice Roberts surveys Holy Scripture to tell us what heaven is all about. In his char-acteristic style, Roberts discusses the biblical data clearly and relevantly, making soul-searching application at every turn. Th is is not just a book of interesting facts about what heaven is like; it is an appeal to men and women to fi nd their happiness in the eternal comfort of God in Christ.

“I have seldom heard a minister preach with more rel-ish, glow, and frequency about heaven than Rev. Maurice Roberts. In Th e Happiness of Heaven, Roberts shows that same giftedness in writing about the glorious state of eter-nal bliss. He writes with warmth, conviction, and longing, while not fearing to address biblically the diffi cult ques-tions in masterful chapters such as ‘Children and Heaven’ and ‘Th e Dark Side of Heaven.’ Th is is one of the author’s best books yet. If you’re a believer, it will move you deeply and make you more homesick. Read it repeatedly to lift your soul up above the sin and mundane trivialities of this world and to set your aff ections on the Triune God and things above.” — Joel Beeke

John owenSimonetta CarrJohn Owen was a great Puritan preacher who lived in England. In this book, Simonetta Carr informs readers about Owen’s life, revealing some of the things that interested him while in school, the care he showed to people when he became a pastor, and the infl uential books that he wrote. Readers will also come to understand the diffi cult times in which Owen lived and how he handled the terrors of war and religious persecution. Full of illustrations and fascinating information, this is an ideal way for young readers to learn history.

“Th is book is delightful, both in its illustrations and in the way it presents the Puritan John Owen. While far from perfect, Owen was a man who lived in a tumultuous time, and through it he tried to live faithfully before God. Simonetta Carr wonderfully takes readers on a brief journey through Owen’s life, a journey that will be enjoyed by children and adults alike.”

— Kelly M. Kapic, Professor of Th eological Studies, Covenant College

“Owen was, and remains, a very important teacher of God’s ways, and it is good to introduce young people to him.”

—J. I. Packer, Professor of Th eology, Regent College

“Simonetta Carr’s wonderful biography of John Owen is the third book in what I hope will be a growing collection of biog-raphies of Christian heroes. In clear, unembellished language Carr chronicles the life of the ‘Prince of Puritans’ through a tumultuous period of English history. Th is book manages to be simple without being shallow. Young readers will admire the integrity of Owen’s conscience as a man living in a diffi cult time and relish the rich descriptions of Owen’s theological genius. Th is is a masterful book. Reformation HeroesDiana Kleyn and Joel Beeke

Th e Reformation did not happen instantaneously; it was some-thing God patiently arranged over a number of years. As you read this book, you will learn how the Lord used some people to plant the seeds of church reform long before October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther published his Ninety-Five Th eses. Luther’s story is well-known; we trust you will fi nd it interesting and instructive to read about him and forty others ( John Knox, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Zacharias Ursinus, Willem Teellinck, etc.) who contributed to the Reformation — some well known and others not so — most of whom are Reformation heroes. To provide a fuller picture of the many-sided Reformation, chapters are also included on the Anabaptist and Counter-Reformation movements. Th e book concludes with a brief summary of the infl uence of the Reformation in diff erent areas of life.

“Diana Kleyn and Joel Beeke have once again found a way to make history both interesting and challenging. By grace, Reformation Heroes is a book that will help capture young minds and hearts for Christ.” — Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, Pastor of

the First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina

“Th e authors are to be warmly commended for giving our young people fresh access to the riches of the Reformation, namely, God’s saints who did such great exploits for the kingdom of the Lord Christ.” — Dr. Michael Haykin, Professor of Church History,

Southern Baptist Th eological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky

“I hope this book will help awaken youth in America to the vital truths set forth so clearly and boldly by the historic heroes of the Reformation.”

The Evil of EvilsJeremiah Burroughs

The Evil of Evils, first printed in 1654, consists of sixty-seven short chapters that expose sin and urge believers to choose affliction over sin. Burroughs organizes his material around seven major thoughts: (1) there is more evil in the least sin than in the greatest affliction; (2) sin and God are contrary to each other; (3) sin is directly against our good; (4) sin opposes all that is good; (5) sin is the evil of all other evils; (6) sin has infinite dimension and character; and (7) sin makes us comfortable with the devil. This treatise is invaluable for sensitizing our consciences to the “exceeding sinfulness of sin” (cf. Rom. 7:13). “I think among all the treatises of this blessed man, Mr. Jeremiah Burroughs (now triumphing in glory above all sin and sorrow), which have been received with so much acceptance among the saints, there has not been presented to your view a more practical piece than this now in your hands. And though various divines have written and spoken much concerning this subject, yet, in my poor judgment, this out-does all of this nature that ever my eyes beheld, setting forth with life and spirit the subject in hand and bringing it down powerfully in a practical way to convince the judgment and work upon the affections of the weakest reader.” —John Yates (d. 1657), A Puritan preacher of the Norfolk area

The Gospel MinistryThomas FoxcroftOn November 20, 1717, Thomas Foxcroft presented a message on faithful gospel min-istry and was strongly petitioned to have it published as a book. However, Foxcroft had not delivered this message at a conference for pastors, but at his own ordination. His inten-

tion was not so much to show his congregation what a proper minister should be like, but rather to attempt to press upon himself the importance and responsibility of the ministry for which he was being set aside. What proved a profitable exer-cise for him became a blessed gift for the church at large! In this book, Foxcroft exhorts ministers to make Christ the focal point of their preaching. He shows the importance of character in ministry, calling for pastors to be wise and prudent in every aspect of their lives. Likewise, ministers are urged to visit with and know their flock, and busy themselves with attending the needs of their souls. Furthermore, minis-ters are reminded how their service to the Lord requires great diligence and should be supremely governed by a pursuit for the conversion and edification of men in Christ. This is a per-tinent reminder that pastors are called to wait on the needs of the souls of men with the good news of Christ. (HC, ISBN: 9781567690613) $16.00 | $12.00

The sound-Hearted ChristianWilliam Greenhill

Nearing the end of his life and ministry, William Greenhill left his congregation a parting gift and lasting testimony of his pastoral care for their souls — he published The Sound-Hearted Christian. This book was developed from a series of sermons Greenhill preached on Psalm 119:80, “Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.” Greenhill shows that a sound heart is watchful and attentive, recognizing that our soul is our greatest possession. After demonstrating the excellence and desirability of a sound heart, he challenges us to test the soundness of our heart. He then directs and motivates us to get and keep a sound heart. The book ends with several appended sermons on faith, Christ, and God’s Word, which serve as fur-ther encouragements to establishing and maintaining a sound heart.

“The Puritans affirmed that true knowledge always begins in the head and extends to the heart, embracing the affections. In a day (not unlike our own) in which mere assent was taken for faith, empty profession was taken for conversion, and dead formality was taken for holiness, the Puritans’ insistence upon the need for a heartfelt appropriation of the truth was both timely and necessary. They devoted countless pages to exposing the danger of hypocrisy and the nature of sincerity. The skill with which they handled this delicate probing of the heart is nowhere more evident than in the present work. In William Greenhill, a renowned preacher and eminent scholar, you have a trustworthy guide into this vitally important subject — what it means to be a sound-hearted Christian.”

The Almost Christian DiscoveredMatthew MeadWhile “cheap grace” and “easy-believism” are relatively new terms, antinomianism is not. Martin Luther coined the word to refer to those who wanted all the benefits of salvation without any of the obligations. To those who looked to some external act for confirmation of a regenerate heart, the Puritans pointed to

proper motives as well as proper conduct. To those who looked merely to their orthodox beliefs, the Puritans pointed out that the demons are orthodox in their creeds, but not in their con-duct. Ever mindful not to stir up unnecessary doubts in weak believers, the Puritans, nevertheless, felt it imperative to awaken the carnal hypocrite out of his undeserved security. Attending upon God without DistractionNathanael VincentTh e mind of man is notoriously fi ckle, and distractions too eas-ily keep him from whole hearted service to God. Even seri-ous Christians feel the strain caused when their desires to off er God more spiritual and well-pleasing sacrifi ces are hindered by remaining sin and vanity of mind. Furthermore, obtaining freedom from distractions in religious duties is very diffi cult. Some think lightly of the disease and imagine the cure need-less. Others are discouraged from striving against distractions because they think it is impossible to overcome them.

In this book, Nathanael Vincent convincingly demonstrates how everyone ought to attend upon God, recognize Him as Lord, and serve Him without interruption. In helping us to see the weight of our obligation, Vincent provides an abundance of pastoral guidance and encouragement. Th is book equips read-ers to detect distractions and deal with them. It also motivates them by showing the benefi ts that pertain to a focused pursuit of glorifying God.

“Attending upon God without Distraction is a practical and expe-riential Puritan masterpiece on a vital but often neglected sub-ject of the Christian life. It invites and exhorts us to a close life with God through Christ, and shows us how to attend upon God as our Savior and Lord, without being drawn away by a host of distractions. Various cases of conscience, cautions, direc-tions, and challenges are addressed with biblical and practical winsomeness and forcefulness. In some ways, this book seems even more applicable in our hurried and harried day than in Nathanael Vincent’s own day!”

This entire treatise is based on Revelation 22:16: “Even so come quickly, Lord Jesus.” The book leaves no

brimstone unturned as the author appeals to sinners to come to Christ in love before He comes to them in judgment. (HC, ISBN: 1573580236) $27.00 | $21.00
