UNIT 1: FITNESS ACROSS THE P.E. CURRICULUM

Components & Benefits of Fitness

Page 3: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

What are the five

health-related fitness

components?

Page 4: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

1. Cardiovascular Endurance

…the ability of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs to

supply oxygen to the working muscles

Page 5: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

• Cardiovascular activities are those that increase the heart rate in the training zone for an extended period of time. The intensity of activities generally should be between 60% to 85% of a person’s maximum heart rate range.

• Maximum heart rate is figured by:Women: 226-your age = age-adjusted Max HRMen: 220-your age = age-adjusted Max HR

Page 6: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

What PE activities raise students heart rate to 60%-85% of their maximum heart rate?

2. Muscular Strength

…the ability of the muscles to exert a force

Page 9: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

• Muscles become stronger when they are exercised against a gradually increasing resistance, or weight. Muscles may adapt by getting bigger (hypertrophy) or smaller (atrophy) depending upon how often and how they are used.

strength?

3. Muscular Endurance

…the ability to efficiently use muscles over a longer period of

time

Page 13: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

• While muscular strength allows you to lift more weight, muscular endurance allows you to lift more repetitions.

• Common tests for muscular endurance are push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and dips.

Page 14: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

What is the name of the physical tests we administer

quarterly?

FitnessGram

Page 15: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

4. Flexibility

• the ability to move at the joints through a full range of motion

Page 16: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

A regular program of stretching may incorporate static (stationary) stretching and/or dynamic (movement) stretching to improve flexibility. Stretching should

be done when the body is warm and should be held to the point of mild discomfort, not pain (and not abrupt bouncing).

Page 17: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

What FitnessGram test do PE teachers use to test student

flexibility?

Sit and Reach

Page 18: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

5. Body Composition

• the amount of body weight that is fat compared to muscles, bones, and other body tissues.

Page 19: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

• Body fat with-in a normal range promotes healthy body functioning.

• A recommended range for males is 12%-18%, for females 18%-24%.

Page 20: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

Common methods used to determine body composition are by using skin calipers or BMI

calculation.

Formula:(Weight / (height x height)) X 703

Example:(160lbs/70”x70”) X 703160/4900 = .032 X 703

22.95 BMI

Page 21: Jacksonville H.S. Physical Education Mission Statement:

If the example of BMI calculation (22.95) was a male, does he fall in

the recommended range?

If the example were female, does she fall in the recommended range?
