June 4, 2015

Dear Parents,

It is inconceivable that another school year is ending. So much has happened this year in addition to the outstanding academic growth your children have demonstrated. The 20th Anniversary has been a wonderful yearlong celebration culminating in Friday’s Assembly when many former students, parents, and staff visited us. Our fourth graders were invited to meet Astronaut Reid Wiseman last week at Dulaney. This is such a unique experience to listen to an astronaut who attended BCPS schools including one of our matriculating high schools! These are just two of the wonderful events that will mark 2014-15 as a special school year in your child’s memory.

A big thank you is extended to the PTA and Whitney Leber. They have done a yeoman’s job this year stepping to the plate whenever asked. The carnival, under the direction of Jen Walters, was one of the best ever! The reception for the 20th Anniversary welcomed all of our visitors. Jacksonville is indebted to the wonderful PTA Executive Board!

As you are aware, next year will start with a new principal in place at Jacksonville. The person should be announced at the June 9th Board of Education meeting. A connect ed message will be sent out on Wednesday June 10th informing you as to who has been assigned here. A personal introductory letter from the new principal will follow later.

Focused on Quality Committed to Excellence

The school office will be open daily Monday through Friday 9:00-2:00 beginning June 19th. If you know of anyone who is new to Jacksonville and hasn’t yet registered, please let them know the school hours.

As stated previously the last week of school is as follows:

Monday, June 15, Tuesday, June 16 Full day Wednesday, June 17, Thursday, June 18 Dismissal at 12:50

If you are stopping in the school prior to the last day, please take a moment to look through the Lost and Found, located in the hall near the cafeteria. There are MANY sweatshirts, hats, etc. Anything left after school closes will be donated to the Jacksonville Goodwill.

Finally, we encourage you to find some academic challenges for your children during the summer. The BCPL Sneaks program is a wonderful way to encourage reading opportunities. Math is all around us daily. Take any opportunity to practice math facts. The structure of the program isn’t as important as the daily practice or reading.

Happy Summer!

Summer Homework: READ!

Did You Know?

All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in

educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows

that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer

vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White,

1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander, 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et alo,

2004)

Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in

mathematical computation skills over the summer months. Low-income

students also lose more than two months in reading achievement, despite the

fact that their middle-class peers make slight gains (Cooper, 1996).

Children lose more than academic knowledge over the summer. Most children

– particularly children at high risk of obesity -- gain weight more rapidly when

they are out of school during summer break (Von Hippel et al, 2007)

Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their

children have productive things to do (Duffett et al, 2004)

Here are some websites that students can visit over the summer to keep their

reading skills and strategies fresh!

FROM THE PRESIDENTDear Jacksonville families and staff,

What a phenomenal 20th year this has been for Jacksonville Elementary! Our students have learned and achieved so much thanks to their incredible hard work…along with the support they’ve received from terrific JES families, teachers, staff, and our dedicated volunteers, donors, and PTA.

May brought us wonderful celebrations and sunshine. Spring Carnival, chaired by the truly amazing Jennifer Walter, was huge fun for the whole community with spectacular entertainment, games, food, and prizes – and the Silent Auction, chaired by Susan Marziale, was incredibly successful. Many thanks to all of the volunteers (families, staff, Dulaney HS Key Club) who made this event possible!

It was a joy to cap off our 20th anniversary with the gathering of past and present faculty, students, families, and PTA members at the Time Capsule Ceremony and Reception – kudos to chair Kathy Epple and her team! We hope our JES students and staff will remember this event as fondly as those twenty years ago remembered theirs.

For nearly three-quarters of Jacksonville Elementary’s history, the school has been so capably led by our excellent Principal Debbie Glinowiecki. Now, as she retires from BCPS and JES this year, we thank her deeply for her extraordinary service to our students, staff, and school and wish her the best at St. Ursula’s and beyond.

We look forward to continuing great JES traditions while embracing the future as we welcome a new principal in our twenty-first year.

We have so many more people to thank this year – please read on for our incomplete list but completely heartfelt gratitude to all! Also, our generous business donors are listed at www.JESPTA.org with deep appreciation.

Please check www.JESPTA.org in the coming months for more about summer gatherings for new students and kindergartners and possibly our new principal. We will miss our departing students, families, volunteers, and staff and wish you all the best! Have a wonderful summer!

With gratitude to all,

Whitney [email protected]

THANK YOU!I would personally like to express deepest appreciation for our super talented PTA team this year, especially our tireless and dedicated officers Laura Beynon, Aimee Marson, Kathryn Brayton, Julie Criswell, and Amy Bachran. They took on many new challenges and rose to them so beautifully! I’m also very grateful to last year’s officers – Kathryn Delahanty-Stewart, Jennifer Pollock Mueller, KK Proefrock, Katie Kotras, Karen Verrett, Kay Holman, and (again!) Amy Bachran for patiently helping our new team learn the ropes.

So many people contribute to the success of our students and school – all of the families who share their beloved children with this community, the hundreds of school and PTA volunteers (families, staff, and others) who serve thousands of hours at school and events and beyond, the PTA members whose dues help advocate for our students and schools, all of those who donate to our PTA and school and support our events and benefits, and more.

I apologize in advance as I know we’re missing some and not including everyone by name here, but please know that everything you have done to help this year has made a positive difference at JES – we are so grateful to you all!
