PARENT BULLETIN
JETS
Debbie Glinowiecki, Principal
Nancy Aumiller, Assistant Principal
May 7, 2015
Dear Parents,
At Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting it was affirmed that the last day
of school for elementary and middle schools will be June 18th. June 17th and 18th will be
3 hour early dismissals. Therefore our Fifth Grade Farewell will be held on Wednesday,
June 17th beginning at 9:45. Another notable change is that school will resume August
24th. This is a change from previously printed calendars.
As of today we have 2 parent applicants for 3 openings on the Site Base
Committee. This is the governance committee of the school comprised of parents,
teachers, PTA representatives, and administration. If you are interested please send an
email explaining why you want to be considered to [email protected] by
tomorrow.
It has been suggested that we collect pennies for Help Restore Baltimore. This
will be sent to the Maryland Unites Fund to aid our neighbors in Baltimore impacted by
recent events. They have stated that 100% of any donation will go towards humanitarian
relief and emergency support to nonprofits in the affected neighborhoods. We will have
a jar located in the lobby for donations. If you would like to send in a check, please make
it payable to Maryland Unites.
Focused on Quality Committed to Excellence
Congratulations to Ms. Jenny Ryan, fourth grade teacher, who was recognized
yesterday by Baltimore County Schools as Jacksonville’s Teacher of the Year. In
addition Mrs. Erin Graff will be recognized as the school’s Volunteer of the Year. Mrs.
Graff can be found almost any day assisting in the library and oversaw the Book Fair for
Mrs. Terry. Mrs. Julie Sullivan, guidance, and Mrs. Rosemary Callahan, second grade
teacher, are finalists for the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce Excellence in
Education Awards. Congratulations to all.
Speaking of congratulations, Mrs. Nicole Brown (third grade teacher) and her
family welcomed their new addition, Declan Brown late last month. We are awaiting the
arrival of Gabrielle DeCarlo, Mrs. DeCarlo’s newest family member (fifth grade teacher).
Our last big announcement focuses on two very special teachers who have
decided to retire effective June 30, 2015. Mrs. Deanna Bowker is our part time Inclusion
teacher. She has only been on staff for one year but has been instrumental as a resource to
teachers and students. Mrs. Rosemary Callahan, second grade teacher, opened
Jacksonville in 1994! She is the quiet force highly regarded by staff, parents, and
students. Her wonderful smile and efficient but loving manner will surely be missed as
she enters a wonderful new phase in her life!
Sincerely,
Debbie Glinowiecki

2015-2016 Jacksonville
Take-Home Folder Cover Art News:
And the winners are!!!!!!
As a part of their Maryland unit our Jacksonville 4th grader artists created
post cards of Maryland scenes and symbols in their art class. Each student
uses texture, patterns and details to complete their ideas about Maryland on a
postcard. These postcards are created in pen and ink with a variety of lines
and textures to complete their artwork.
The judges said this year’s entries made it hard to select 6 winners, but we
did!
And this year’s winners are:
Cover artists: Keegan Toomey and Madeleine York !
Inside artists : Kathryn Lamoureux, Ben Iannantuono, Hailey Greaves, and
Finley Jones!
Notes From the Nurse:
Spring is here, as well as allergy season! If your child is an allergy sufferer,
please remember to give them allergy medicine at home, on the advice of
your doctor. BCPS does not stock eye drops, or non-drowsy allergy
medication. Any Kleenex donations would be greatly appreciated and
gladly accepted in the health suite!
With nicer weather, students are able to have outdoor recess. Please
remember to apply sunscreen to your child before school. Also, please keep
a spare change of clothes in your child’s locker, as it can remain muddy
outside after rain showers.
Students who have daily medications, Epi-pens, Benadryl, or inhalers at
school will be receiving a letter this month. Please remember to retrieve
your child’s medications PRIOR to the last day of school, or they will be
discarded.
Students moving up to Middle School will receive an envelope with health
information. Included are health forms and a forwarding envelope to mail
them to your child’s middle school.

FROM THE PRESIDENTDear Jacksonville families and staff,
Now THIS is springtime – and our Spring Carnival is the perfect way to enjoy it! Hope to see you there this Friday, May 8th, for fantastic circus entertainment, games, food, and prizes. Don’t miss the amazing Silent Auction offerings, including items from our own staff (such as lunch with a teacher), families, local businesses, and beyond. The vital funds raised will provide curriculum enhancements and much more for our students and school. Many thanks to Jennifer Walter with the Carnival team and Susan Marziale with the Silent Auction team – and to all who pitch in at this huge event with big fun for all!
Jacksonville’s Career Day in March was wonderful – so many family members volunteered to share fascinating and inspiring career information with our students. We’re grateful to all who participated and to Melissa Ducroix, Laura Beynon, and the JES faculty Spirit Committee for their excellent work in organizing this.
Earth Day was celebrated with conservation tips from our 5th Grade Garden Club as well as a school-wide assembly with WBAL TV Chief Meteorologist (and father of JES alumni) Tom Tasselmyer, who very graciously donated his time.
The April 30th Blood Drive surpassed all goals and received donations that will save up to 267 lives! Thank you to all who came to donate, to those who signed Ava Daniel’s card and showed their support for the families of Johnny Rozema and Riley Davis, and to our dedicated coordinators Jennifer Hazlehurst, Laura Reiners and their committee.
Our thoughts remain with all in Baltimore who have suffered through recent events – we expect to hear more soon on ways our community can help.
All of our school and PTA volunteers have been amazing this year – please look for your invitation coming home soon for the May 22nd Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, which will be followed by our (very brief) spring PTA General Membership Meeting. Thank you!
Warm regards,Whitney [email protected]

In 1998, the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, now FARE, created Food Allergy Awareness
Week to educate the public about food allergies, a potentially life-threatening medical condition.
This is a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on food allergies, raise awareness, educate others
and inspire action. Here are some facts you may not know about food allergies:
Food allergies can be life-threatening and are a serious and growing public health problem –
one for which there currently is no cure.
They affect up to 15 million Americans, including nearly 6 million children – roughly two in
every classroom. If all of the kids with a food allergy lived in one state, it would be the 19th
largest state (by population) in the U.S.
Nearly 40 percent of these children have already experienced a severe or life-threatening
reaction. In addition, more than 30 percent of these children have multiple food allergies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of children with
food allergies in the U.S. increased 50 percent between 1997 and 2011, but there is no
clear answer as to why.
A reaction to food can range from a mild response (such as an itchy mouth) to anaphylaxis, a
severe and potentially deadly reaction. Every three minutes, a food allergy reaction sends
someone to the emergency room in the U.S.
Having a child with food allergy increases the yearly cost of raising a child by about 30
percent, which costs American families a total of nearly $25 billion per year.
There are many ways you can make a difference in the lives of those living with food allergies:
Learn more about food allergies and anaphylaxis by going to www.foodallergy.org.
Get involved with events and fundraisers to help fund food allergy research, awareness,
advocacy and education efforts. Learn more at http://www.foodallergy.org/get-involved.
Support friends and loved ones with food allergies by asking how you can help!
There are almost as many ways that people eat food as there are people in the world! Because every person is one-of-a-kind, our bodies sometimes need special things to keep us healthy.
• Some people eat a certain way because of their religion.
• Some people eat a certain way because of their beliefs.
• Some people eat a certain way because of their ethnic traditions.
• Some people eat a certain way because of where they grew up.
• Some people must avoid certain foods because they are allergic and certain foods can make them very sick.
Thankfully, there are millions of different foods available, so we can take care of ourselves by eating only foods that keep us healthy and happy!
So the next time that you see someone with different foods on their plate, remember that what you eat is only part of who you are. It’s okay to be different!
