Jackson County CourthouseLocated in Jackson, the courthouse is situated on a promi-
nent site west of the business district. Constructed in 1908, it is executed in neoclassic architectural design. Massacre memorialsJackson County pays honor and tribute to early settlers killed
at the hands of uprising Dakota braves in 1957 and 1862 with a pair of monuments and memorials — one located in Jackson’s historic Ashley Park next to the recently restored Olson-Slaa-bakken cabin and another dedicated to the Langland family at the site of an 1862 massacre in rural Jackson County.

Coursolle markerThe life and times of one of Jackson County’s most colorful
characters is noted on a newly erected marker near Belmont Park in central Jackson County. The signboard tells the story of Joseph Coursolle, a trapper, trader, farmer, soldier, guide and interpreter known in annals of local history as “Gaboo.”

HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Can you imagine what it would be like to have lived in Jackson County in the late 1800s? Make plans to visit Fort Belmont this summer and take a step back in time to the days of early pioneers. Many settlers traveled to the area in covered wagons. An original wagon is one of the featured displays inside the fort’s museum. From covered wagons to a sod house, the fi rst settlers were a very hardy people. Due to the lack of trees on the prairie, they made their homes from 2-foot strips of prairie sod. The fort’s sod house was built by hand using the same methods pioneers used in the 1860s.
A blacksmith shop is located close to the sod house. You get the feeling the “fi rst” business to locate in a settlement was an important one. The blacksmith could make anything metal — nails, machinery parts, kitchen utensils and horseshoes were made on the spot. Walk along the prairie grass to an exact replica of the log cabin and stockade constructed to protect early settlers. Eleven families (60 to 70 people) crowded into the original log cabin (except for winters) for most of two years. Since Fort Belmont was completely occupied and constructed by neighbors, it is classifi ed as a civilian fort, one of only two civilian-built forts constructed in the Midwest in the 1800s.
From the log cabin, walk down into the valley to a one-third-scale replica of a waterwheel-operated fl our mill that uses wooden gears to stone-grind fl our. Families came from as far away as Sioux Falls, S.D., to the mills operating in the Des Moines River Valley. Bring your camera as you head up to the fort tower for a breathtaking view of the Fort Belmont complex and expanding river valley. Originally built on the south side of town by Buren and Evelyn Watland, the tower was saved from demolition and moved to the present-day Fort Belmont in 2010. Buren and Evie were local history buff s with ties to the original settlers to the area. It is a wonderful tribute to
HISTORIC FORT BELMONT: STEP INTO HISTORYtheir dream that the preservation of Fort Belmont and local history continues.
To the south of the museum you will fi nd the 1873 Lysgard farmhouse and summer kitchen. Many displays here tell the story of everyday life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The 1902 Delafi eld Church was also an important part of the early farming community in Jackson County. It was a place to worship and socialize. The church is still used often today for weddings, baptisms and Sunday evening services during the summer. Fort Belmont is open daily, Memorial Day through Labor Day. The park is located just west of Asa Auto Plaza in Jackson at the end of Belmont Lane. School fi eld trips and special tours are available, along with building and church rentals. For additional information, call the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau at (507) 847-3867.

PARKS AND TRAILS
EXPANSIVE TRAIL SYSTEM IS FAST BECOMING REGIONALLY-RENOWNED AMENITY
What is fast becoming a renowned amenity throughout the region, Jackson County’s sprawling walking and biking trail system continues to grow.
New legs of trail were added recently and more miles are set to be laid in the near future, making Jackson County’s walking and biking trail system one of the most expansive and widely used in the area.
The Nelson Creek Trail runs along Nelson Creek behind the Good Samaritan Society Center and Minnesota West Community and Technical College in Jackson, then east/west along County State Aid Highway 34. The views are breathtaking, the scenery terrifi c and the ride or walk is also challenging, as hills and valleys make it a workout for young and old alike.
The trail was the second constructed in the city of Jackson, joining the Des Moines River Trail, which traverses along both sides of the river, from Dann’s Island Park on the southern edge of town to the Ashley Park area, and along Riverside Drive to behind Sunshine Foods.
Also joining the county trail system is the Loon Lake Trail, connecting the county parks along Loon Lake in the southern part of Jackson County.
Recently completed is a segment of trail joining the Loon Lake Trail with the popular Mini-Wakan State Park trails in Iowa, one of the fi rst interstate trails systems in the country.
Another recent addition is the Sunset Trail, which connects the end of the Nelson Creek Trail at Old Highway 16 to the Sunset View housing subdivisions in Jackson, then travels along Springfi eld Parkway east to Highway 71.
And the fi rst leg of a trail intended to connect the Springfi eld Parkway Trail with Fort Belmont was just laid along Highway 71 North in Jackson.
In 2015, a segment of trail was laid in Lakefi eld with plans to lay a second segment in the works at present.
A state-authorized regional trail that will connect the Iowa Great Lakes with Murray County’s Lake Shetek through the heart of Jackson County is also in planning stages.
Jackson County’s trails are designed for non-motorized users, including walkers, bikers and runners, though the state authorized regional trail may accommodate snowmobile groups and equestrians.

COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE
Jackson County Central High School, Jackson Heron Lake-Okabena High School, Okabena
SCHOOLS
Jackson County Central has experienced unprecedented success in the classroom, as well as in extracurricular activities, since the consolidation of the Jackson and Lakefi eld school districts in 1997, and the additional consolidation of the Sioux Valley district in 2000.
JCC students have proven their talents in sports, academics, fi ne arts, FFA and much more. JCC has earned state team championships in volleyball, football, wrestling, baseball and softball, to go with a host of numerous FFA state and national championships.
In fi ne arts and academics, the JCC Math League and Music Listening teams have placed high at the state level, while speech, drama and robotics students continue to perform well
year after year. District voters approved a $19.6 million referendum in
2001 that paved the way for a renovation and construction project, primarily at JCC High School, including its 500-seat auditorium, as well as new technology, science and agriculture departments at the high school, a fi tness center and auxiliary gym and many other additions.
In 2007, voters in the JCC district approved a $949-per-pupil operating referendum, and, in 2016, a $175 per-pupil increase, allowing the school to continue to maintain its outstanding staff , curriculum and extracurricular opportunities for the students of JCC.

HERON LAKE-OKABENA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTThe Heron Lake-Okabena Public School District is
comprised of a grades-seven-through-12 high school situated in Okabena and preschool to sixth-grade elementary school located in Heron Lake. The high school is home to the HL-O Wildcats. The high school is proud to have the advantage of a small-school atmosphere, while at the same time providing a
diverse curriculum that prepares students for the next stage in their education. At the elementary school, a low student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1 allows each student to succeed and work to his or her potential. The schools have up-to-date media centers and excellent curricular and extracurricular facilities due to the support both communities have given the district.
