What’s It Like At Jackdaws?Lots of people new to Jackdaws askwhat to expect from a course here. We can tell you about the fantastictutors, the beautiful and delightfulsetting, the friendly atmosphere andthe wonderful home - cooked foodbut to get a better feel for whatactually happens at a course here are some comments from tutors and participants.

Philip Fowke (piano tutor)One of the features of Jackdaws, and onewhich has a special appeal to me, is the emphasis put by Jackdaws on theimportance of amateur musicians. Welive in a time which tends to focus on musical provision for young, talentedand aspiring professional musicians.Maureen's vision for Jackdaws wasunusual in that, conversely, she placedgreat importance on the encourage-ment of adult amateur musicianswhatever their age or ability. From thestart I shared Maureen’s belief that thissection of the musical fraternity wasseriously undervalued and inadequatefacilities for coaching and tutoringgenerally available. The very wordamateur is often associated in a negativelight, but at Jackdaws, Maureen hascreated an environment which fostersand promotes all those who, for manyreasons, have either come to theirinstrument, or returned to it, later in life inan atmosphere that is both relaxed and

unchallenging. It has been for me, asource of great pleasure to see, with veryfew exceptions, even the most nervousand initially reluctant, perform at the end of course concert with joy and asense of achievement. It is rare that such participants don't sign up for the next course to develop theiremerging confidence.

Jackdaws has a special charm, sense ofintimacy and homeliness. In a little valleyof great peacefulness and beauty, manycome time and time again to enjoy musicmaking in ways they might never haveimagined. New friends are made, and theword spreads. May it long continue.

Michael Welbourne (participant)By the age of 18 I was playing the piano atquite an advanced level, but none of theteachers I had (excellent pianists them-selves) were good at teaching technique;consequently I was at best a rather coarsepianist and felt that I had some howfailed to realise my full potential.

When I retired, I resolved to takelessons again and see whether I could

get further. I was very fortunate in theteacher I chose who did (and does) a lotfor my technique; and he, in turn, suggested that I might profit from goingto courses at Jackdaws.

Jackdaws courses have become a veryimportant element in my life. I have, Isuppose, been attending three or more ayear for several years. I went to my firstcourse with some trepidation, expectingto find myself a geriatric surrounded by gifted young people. I found, andregularly find, a congenial and mutuallysupportive group of people of varyingages, united by a love of music, all keento improve their understanding and theirperformance of the works they bring, and all keen to help one another.

What Jackdaws provides, over andabove what you can get from a privateteacher, however good, is, first andforemost, exposure to a range ofteachers of the highest quality each withtheir own distinctive style and insights.

So at Jackdaws I have learnt a variety of ways in which one mightaddress different technical and musicalproblems; and a variety of different ways of working at the piano. Secondly, I have overcome my nervousness aboutplaying in front of people. But forexperience at Jackdaws, I don’t think Iwould ever have performed at the BristolMusic Club.

For me it has been a huge privilegeworking with the various Jackdawsteachers whose courses I have attended

and I am continually amazed at theirpatience and generosity. I have learnt an enormous amount. I am no longerafflicted with the thought that I havefailed to realise my potential, though ofcourse I am always aware that there islong way to go. Actually, nowadays I ammore inclined to think that there is verylittle I couldn’t have a crack at, if onlythere were time enough.

William Carslake(Jackdaws Chamber Choir conductor)‘Jackdaws is the most replenishing place. Not only do I learn concretely when I’mthere (and that’s as a teacher!) but I’malso inspired by the community spiritand the reminder that music is simplythat written down. Also Jackdaws lets everyone aspire to great repertoireand great technique and that’s anatmosphere I like to work in. And all of this happens in a beautiful but unfussy place where you can take abreak with a jog, a swim or a bit ofcrayfish-catching!

Mary Dodd (participant)I had the BEST time at this workshop! Neil and Penny (Jenkins) and Anna (andAlex) made me feel like an expert! They are sooo very good at making you feel clever and confident. I have enough material to work on for the next6 months. The highlight was singing a duet with Neil! Best time ever!

Friday 14 october - sunday 16 octoberFantasiasRuth HarteCourse No. 2960 Level: Grade 5 and above. Fee £170Described as a composition for which no othername happens to occur to the composer, from the sixteenth century to the present day, whether miniature or large-scalecanvases, the musical ingredients of thefantasy provoke infinite possibilities ofinterpretation. Considering its essentialimprovisatory element, can, or should, “fancy” take precedence over form?

In his “Dictionary of Music”, Rousseaudefines the Fantasie as “a piece of instrumentalmusic that one performs as one composes it”.But should this implied freedom haveconstraints in order to achieve an organic, authoritative performance? We will explore the balancing of flexibility with precision, relating rhythmic unity to changes in tempi, technical choices for clarity, dexterity, tone-quality, colour, texture and the scaling ofharmonic growth. In particular, we will workon the need to listen constantly and to trustone's musical instinct, which can actually lead to enjoying one's own playing! TheGerman “phantasien” means to indulge one’s imagination, particularly exemplified bySchumann. In Opus 12 and 17. Beethoven uses“Sonata Quasi una Fantasia” in both his op.27works. Let alone other classical composers. Youhave a wide choice up to contemporaryrepertoire; bring a minimum of two examples.

Friday 28 october - sunday 30 octoberThe Art of Piano Technique Margaret Fingerhut Course No. 2962Level: Grade 8 and above. Fee £170 With the Olympics approaching and everyone(or nearly everyone) becoming sportsobsessed, the goals of speed and athleticismseem increasingly to be the dominant ethos inpiano playing. However, true technical abilityis about many things, not just speed, loudnessand accuracy. It is about bringing out all thecharacter, emotion and subtlety of the music. This weekend will focus on helping you toobtain a beautiful sound. It will encourage youto explore significant aspects of techniquesuch as voicing, colour, touch and articulation,in order to realise your interpretative vision. Wewill look at the importance of the right choiceof fingering and the many varied ways ofpedalling. Of course, help will also be givenwith the more mechanical aspects involved inimproving velocity, finger independence, evenness and strength. We will also discussperformance psychology and how you canmake the best use of your practice time tokeep your inspiration going! Please bring twopieces of any length.

Friday 10 February - sunday 12 FebruaryPiano WorkshopPhilip Fowke Course No. 2971Level: Grade 5 and above. If you enjoy playing the piano, suffer fromnerves, yet long to perform with greatersecurity and confidence, then this is the course

for you. Bring along your favourite pieces for discussion and exploration in a relaxed, informal environment. There is no obligationto perform any piece in full; it may be that you only wish to tackle a few bars at a time. The general standard is from about Grade 5upwards, though this does not preclude those of a humbler ability. The emphasis is onlearning with enjoyment, sharing difficultieswith others, and discovering comfortable, practical ways to overcome musical andtechnical problems. There is no age limit.Participants are encouraged to bring alongany duets they may have. These have provedto be very popular and can greatly contributeto the musical and performing experience of the weekend.
