A N E X C E R P T F R O M T H E B O O K
During my formative years I spent
time with philosopher and theolo-
gian Dallas Willard, who often and
memorably told us chat to experi-ence the kingdom of God, "a grOllp
of people should get together and
simply try to do the things that
Jesus instructed his disciples to
do." We don't enter the kingdom of
God merely by thinking about It or
listening to one another talk about
it. 'VI" have to experiment together
with how to apply the teachings of
Jesus to the details of our lives ....
In Japanese the word d o j o means
"place of the way" and is used to
describe a school or practice space
for martial arts or meditation.
Theoretically, a dojo could be cre-
ated for any skill or discipline. You
could have a knitting dojo, a cook-
ing dojo, a karate dojo-or a Jesus
dojo ....
To offer a more precise descrip-
tion, a Jesus dojo, or community of
practice, is (1) an experiment, (2)
inspired by the life and teachings
of Jesus, (3) in which a group of
people commit time and energy to a
set of practices, (4)Inconversation
with real needs in our society and
with in themselves, (5) and reflect
on how these experiences can shape
the ongoi.ng rhythms of life ....
I use the term "community of prac-
tice" here to describe the ancient
and endunng historical phenom-
enon of whole person apprentice-
ship to Jesus. It is the w ay that
disciples to Jesus have always been
made. When Jesus proclaimed the
immediacy of God's kingdom, he
asked for a whole person response:
"Repent and believe the good news"
(Mark I:IS). Eugene Peterson's
dynamic paraphrase highlights this
text as a call to action: "TIme's up!
God's kingdom is here. Change
your life and believe the Message."
In other words, dream up your
whole life again-because there is a
new w ay to be human.

Q & . A W IT H A DE L E C A LH OU N
Q: Why did you decide to write
Invitations from G od?
A; I have watched over-optioned
people struggle with their choices.
So many good things to choose
from, so little time. We want to say
yes to everything. As I witnessed
the toll of ou r y e s e s Inera zinessand soul-depleted lives I wanted
to say, "It doesn't have to be like
this. You can say yes to God's
invitations and find an antidote to
the craziness."
Q: What difference does it make
when we say y e s ?
A: God's Invitations slow us down,
unmask our idols, root us in reality,
deepen our ability to care for
others, transforming us into men
and women of character. Saying
yes CO God could change you, your
future and the world you live in.
Q: What do you want your readers
to take away from Invitations jrl)lll God?
A: There are a few things: (I)
SaylI1g yes to God IS the best and
most important thing you can ever
do in this life. Saying yes to God
is saying yes to life. (2) Saying yes
to God lands you smack in the
middle of Jesus' own life-his
JOys, sorrows and the suffering of
th 1$ world - FeelIng what Jesus feels
for this world spring-loads liS for
action. Right action depends on
waiting, weeping, following, restingand living life in the "most excellent
way." (3) SaylI1g yes to God's
invitations is the only way out of
the maze of cultural imperatives.
(4) Saying yes to God is the only
way we will look like Jesus and not
like everyone else.
Q; What is your hope for this book?
A: Iong for people to say yes to
life. Ibelieve the church and Christ-
followers don't have to look like our
culture. 'vVecan be the breath of
fresh air, the place of freedom and
depth and change for the better.
