September 3rd: Ken Salvail

Ken Salvail, owner and general manager of Ken's Horti-

cultural Services, will be speaking to us on vertical

gardening and living walls. Ken has over 30 years'

experience in landscape horticulture and is known as an

industry leader in the Okanagan and in BC. His expert

opinion is relied on by many when it comes to plants and

plant health, pest and disease management, and

landscape construction. With his business, appearances

at Garden Tours, conducting seminars, and--of course--

with Don Burnett, conducting the Saturday morning

‘The Garden Show’ on AM1150, Ken's a very busy man

and we're fortunate that he still has time to speak at our

meetings. You can find out much more about Ken and

October 1st: Harold Baumbrough

Harold Baumbrough is a retired biology teacher who taught at Penticton Secondary School and whose passion for the subject inspired many of his students to become biologists. Harold is a photographer, botanist and gardener. He is a member of the Southern Interior Rare Plants Recovery team and is a volunteer steward of the Trust Creek property near his home in Naramata. He and his wife Lydia have travelled to a number of countries to view and photo-graph the flora of those areas. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE…

Welcome back everyone! After experiencing our very hot, intense Okanagan summer, enjoying the colors and plants of our gardens, eating the delicious summer veggies , swimming in the lake, and visiting family and friends, we can now get ready for a lovely Fall. There are some exciting Fall ac-tivities planned for our enjoyment and interest. Just to give you a few examples, a very popular speaker Ken Salvail, will be speaking on Vertical Gardens and we will be able to enjoy a Bulb Sale in October. Please keep this in mind, as you divide your bulbs from this year’s growth. Our Flower show was a huge success, and many thanks go out to Judy Runzer and the large group of volunteers who worked hard to make it a success. Also, it was very enjoyable to visit the Open Gardens, de-spite the precarious weather conditions, which were threatening to thunder, rain and drench us all. Our annual picnic was wonderful and all who attended enjoyed the centerpieces on the tables, the camaraderie and the delicious food. Many really nice raffle prizes were given out to the member-ship and the rain held off until the very end. Our fun hat contest was won by Bev Akerlund, who showed us that a few roses from her garden, arranged in a simplistic classy design, captivated the judges. Next year, let’s put our creativity to the test and create a competitive hat for this competi-tion. I understand that someone even won by using a sprig of rhubarb in a dashing hat! It is sup-posed to be a “fun” event, so let’s get creative! I look forward to seeing you at the Sept. 3rd meeting……Doreen Morash Photos: Doreen Morash

GUISACHAN FLOWER SHOW 2014 report submitted by J. Runzer

It can be a little hectic first thing Saturday morning but with great teamwork, we did it! An event like this cannot be a success without a good planning committee, many volunteers (at last count about 30), and of course, those who entered their lovely exhibits. Our entries were down a little from last year, but the quality remains very good. My thanks go to Rosemary Botner, Dorothy Robison, Pat Zander, Jean Dangerfield, and Alicja Paradzik who assisted not only in planning, but happily carried out their responsibilities. Once again the indefatigable team of Rosemary and Dorothy orchestrated the “other events” which included paintings by Ruth Kristensen and Emmie Baumer; lovely orchids from the Orchid Society; an invasive plant display; floral art display; and the special treat of having, the lovely young lady, Sarah Mainland playing the harp for us. We had the use of 4 tents supplied by the City of Kelowna, Re/Max Kelowna, Okanagan Xeriscape and KGC . The demonstration tent in its new location was indeed a busy place. This year featured a floral demo presentation by Diane Vargo and Etta Scotter using identical vases and identical flowers and a demonstration by Vic Goode on how to make a hanging moss basket that would last from summer through fall, Evan Rafuse did a talk on Invasive Plants. We have found that having chairs available for visitors in the shade at the demo tent encourages many to stay and participate in the events. All volunteer names were entered into a draw for Vic Good’s basket, and was won by Chris Casey The Heritage Society again set up tables and had coffee and carrot cake available for sale and a garden and plant sale as well. Another added feature was the Walk and Talk by Janice Henry from the Heritage Society who gave the history of the buildings at the gardens. Matt and Alicja Paradzik had the advertising signs out early and Hugh Phillip and Matt set up the tents from OXA and KGC. This year we had a large tent donated by REMAX Kelowna and of course the “big” tent from the City of Kelowna. These tents are just wonderful for our flower show. Don Burnett once again gave us great radio coverage and his popular Walk and Talk in the park always draws a good crowd. The Okanagan Floral Art and Horticultural Judging Association had a nice floral display of their interpretation of “Summer Fun”. Thank you ladies. The winner of the 2014 aggregate award and Interior Savings Trophy was Judy Runzer with Sue Shanks a close sec-ond. A complete list of winners is published in the newsletter as well as on our website.

Thank you everyone for all your

hard work and thank you to all

who came to visit the show.

Early days to be thinking Spring? Perhaps; except Sun West's tour to this fabulous show is something to think about as Summer slides into Fall and the year slips into Winter.

Don Burnett is always on the bus; this year, so was Ken Salvail. Sun West will soon be publishing details. Watch this space in the October and Novem-ber newsletters for dates (and a possible discount for KGC members)

This Madeiran gardener certainly seems to think so, despite his meager tools. He was rather bemused by me wanting to photograph him! The gardens were magnificent and the flowers adorned our hotel room.

Table Centrepieces

Again this year the Canadian

Institute for the Blind is holding

a fundraising dinner and has

asked if our club is willing to

provide centerpieces for their

dinner tables. Several of our

members have volunteered to

arrange flowers. However we

need some-one to coordinate.

With a budget of $500 you would

need to provide vases, flowers

and any others sundries needed

to produce about 20 centre-

pieces on the afternoon of

October 30th.

Please let me know if you are

willing to participate and more

importantly coordinate, thanks in

advance
