COMMANDER’S UPDATE

NEXT DEADLINE:

15 MARCH 2015 Send photos and articles to:

Lt Carol Holmes, AP at

[email protected]

It’s hard to believe how fast this January and February have

flown by. Immediately after our squadron Change of Watch,

we headed off to Jacksonville to the Annual National Meet-

ing. Sarasota was well represented with most of the Bridge

attending.

One of the highlights for me was Sarasota winning 2nd and

3rd prizes for the Youth Poster Contest in the age appropriate

categories. Thanks for the hard work of Lt Vivian

Seagraves, P and P/C Sue Lomastro, AP on the contest.

P/C Sue Lomastro, AP and Lt/C Richard Winston, JN attended the Leadership

Training session while Lt/C Bob Holmes, AP attended the Virtual Trainer Seminar,

On-the Water Training and other events. Lt/C Gary Wells, AP manned the Ama-

teur Radio Booth and was appointed President of the USPS Ham Radio Club. P/D/

C Bob Barber, SN and I attended the Marketing and Public Relations Committee

meetings and the Executive Department meeting. Everyone had a chance to tour

the Expo.

I made two presentations on Squadron Rejuvenation which were very well

attended. Fifty-five people attended the first session and sixty-five attended the

second session. I have been asked by National to head up a project working with

two districts in California. I’ll have more to share with you at a later time as they

are still working out the details.

On Saturday Sue Lomastro, Richard and Murdell Winston and Bob and I attended

the Annual Meeting as the squadron delegates. The Fall Governing Board Meeting

scheduled in San Diego has been moved to the week of 23-30 August due to a con-

flict with the hotel. The change was approved at the annual meeting on Saturday.

Brand identification was a big topic of discussion. New guidelines make all materi-

als from National have a consistent look: same fonts, colors and logos. Our con-

sultants recommended that all squadrons use the name United States Power Squad-

rons above the squadron name. We are moving away from using the acronym

U.S.P.S. which often caused confusion about our organization and the United

States Postal Service. On Saturday evening, Sue, Bob and I attended National’s

Change of Watch Dinner Dance and left for home on Sunday morning.

Our Executive Committee approved the purchase of the Virtual Safe Boating

Simulator to be used with the ABC, Seamanship, Piloting and On-the Water cours-

es. We are so excited about the possibilities of this addition. Many thanks to P/C

Bill Boos, AP and Lt/C Bob Holmes, AP for all the hard work they have put into

making this happen for our squadron.

So far we have attended seven Changes of Watch for the District 22 squadrons. We

also attended the 67th Anniversary celebration of the Boca Ciega Sail and Power

Squadron.

Be sure to mark your calendars and plan to attend the District 22 Spring Conference

in Tampa on Saturday, 17 April, 2015. Our very own P/C Sue Lomastro, AP has

been nominated to move up to District Administrative Officer. Let’s be sure we

have a large turnout for this special Change of Watch. Also, there are a large num-

ber of new Round Tables discussions that will be presented. On-the-Water Power

Boating Course will be presented by Lt/C Bob Holmes, AP. Check out the flyers in

the South Wind or the Beacon for all the new Round Tables.

By the time this newsletter goes out, the Squadron will be off to the Caribbean on

the Commander’s Cruise. Forty-four members will take lots of pictures and have

fun things to tell you about next month. We leave on Sunday, 1 March and return

on Sunday, 8 March. See you then.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S UPDATE

“A moment of choice is a moment

of truth. It’s the testing point of

our character and competence.”

- - - Stephen Covey

Chaplain’s Corner

P/D/C Robert D. Barber, SN

SPSS Chaplain

What’s Knot in the News

Every once in a while somebody asks me, “Why do

we fly the Squadron Burgee above the National En-

sign on our flagpole at the Squadron?” File this in

your trivia bank—because it’s a gaff-rigged flag

pole-now who didn’t know that!!

The usual argument by those who think it is wrong to fly the national

ensign from the gaff is that the national ensign shouldn’t fly below a club

burgee or other flag; the Flag code states that the national ensign always

flies above. Notice that even when the national ensign is flown from the

stern of a ship, it is lower in height than other flags flying on the ship.

When the ensign is flown from a gaff-rigged pole, a flag flown at the top

of the mast is not considered above the ensign because it is not being

flown directly above the ensign on the same halyard. So there you have

it—just think of the flagpole as the mast of a ship and the gaff which in

this case is attached to the mast, but on a ship in port the gaff is actually

attached to the stern. All Navy and Coast Guard veterans know where the

national ensign is when the ship is tied to the pier, because each time you

came aboard or departed your ship you always faced the stern, where the

gaff was rigged, and rendered a salute to the national ensign before your

coming or going. I still do it to this day when I go aboard a military ship

of the line.

I moved to Sarasota in November 2010 and I drove by this grey building

on the corner of Tuttle & Hyde Park and saw the national ensign flown

on a flag pole after dark unlit!!!! I noticed the building sign said

“Sarasota Power & Sail” and I thought, “What a bunch of goobers, they

don’t even know how to show respect to our country’s flag”. Well here it

is February of 2015 and the issue has finally been rectified by our in-

house handy man (and outstanding education officer) Gary Wells. Not

only did he get all the lights on that dark north end of the building work-

ing, he also got the flood that shines on our national ensign working. It’s

an electric eye, so it is on whenever it gets dark.

Gary also upgraded all the flood lights that shine into the parking lot to

the new CFL type spots—they have the ‘curly q’ style bulb inside,— and

replaced the oblong lights mounted on the building with CFL bulbs. Just

for Barry, Gary put an extra bright bulb by the door near the key pad. He

also replaced the entire lighting fixture over the double doors with a new

energy efficient unit that is much brighter and uses new technology

tubes. Gary estimates the energy savings at 30-40 % for those changes

alone. In the coming years, all the florescent tubes will be upgraded in-

side the building to more energy efficient lighting. Gary is another one of

the many people at SPSS that enjoys giving back to an organization that

gives so much to him—just ask him, he isn’t shy!!!

Oh--- don’t forget to say “Thanks Gary—you light up my life!” the next

time you see him.

So there you have it—all that’s knot in the news—have a great day—and

get your VSC INSPECTION TODAY !!!!!

P/C Susan Lomastro, AP, Membership Co-Chair

Lt Bud Lomastro, S, Membership Co-Chair

SPSS was very visible at the USPS National Annual

Meeting in Jacksonville in January at USPS’s trade-

show. The National Squadron Activities Committee

contains subcommittees one of which is Amateur Radio.

This committee has been somewhat inactive due to lack

of attention as energies focused on other programs.

Working with the National Activities Committee chair-

person, our SEO Gary Wells, AP took the lead, to be-

come the primary contact as the new Chair of the Ama-

teur Radio Committee. Gary set up a booth at the trade

show to demonstrate the hobby, display changes in

technology, illustrate what SPSS has been doing with

this hobby at the local level, and how Marine Radio har-

monizes nicely with Amateur Radio. The booth had

great attendance during the show.

An effort to create a ham radio member directory was

undertaken by collecting member names that came

through the trade show. We collected over 75 member

names that were or currently are hams. There is now a

selection in DB2000 that will help collect member in-

volvement in the hobby when membership is renewed. It

is estimated that there are over 500 ham radio enthusi-

asts throughout all of USPS membership.

USPS also has an amateur radio club that operates under

a memorandum of understanding with the American

Radio Relay League of Newington, CT, the primary or-

ganization of the ham radio community. As this club

conducts its officer elections, Gary Wells will be nomi-

nated to become the president of the USPS Amateur

Radio Club and will be working to market and promote

the hobby throughout USPS.

Keep an eye out for a future article in The Ensign re-

garding SPSS’s involvement with the open water email

system Winlink; our squadron is the only one in USPS

with this capability to assist open water boaters.

SPSS LIBRARY

Every single answer any mariner would ever need is available to you

through our SPSS library. My dear friend, P/C Tim Koverman, JN started

the library and catalogued the entries. With his own labor and funding,

he built this library and it’s neighboring workshop for all your needs as a

Power Squadron member.

I do my best to safeguard his priceless legacy — our legacy to the future.

And it is all very, very easily acquired. For example, every possible

answer you need is located in the northeast corner slanted shelving –

definitive answers for every conceivable situation are in the books written

by famous navigators Bowditch and Duttons.

Located throughout your library are endless detailed printed materials to

give you intriguing answers to specific issues you might want to delve

into. There are charts and maps for all your fantasies to come to life.

Please browse through everything and give yourself encouragement for

the wonderful world of travel as a mariner. I am simply the custodian of

all this knowledge. You are your own happiness, should you want it.

Welcome to the library.
