It is with great pleasure and pride that I will be sending home our new 2017-2019

Business Plan. This plan has been constructed with the staff and School Board of Newton Moore ESC.

Key features of our Business Plan

Our Business Plan has been designed to meet the challenges faced in an ever-changing school and cultural

environment. It identifies the strategic direction of the school and contains key statements about the be-

liefs and values that underpin our operations and commitment to quality teaching and learning.

In forming our plan, we acknowledge that schools are not places where we can set out predictable, always

consistent and repeatable strategies for the same result. Consequently, our Business Plan is a dynamic

working plan that will be reviewed and updated annually to ensure ongoing relevance and progress to-

wards the schools goals.

Focus Priority Areas

Empowerment of staff and local communities The clear objective of our school is to empower school communities with a greater sense of investment in, and ownership of our school and their children’s education.

High quality teaching and learning High performing systems around the world are clear that improving the effectiveness of teaching is the only way to really lift student performance and therefore, school performance.

Health and Wellbeing How staff feel makes a difference to their ability to respond effectively to the challenges they face. Just as it is true for students, staff need a workplace culture that promotes feelings of belonging, trust, respect and value. Four Pillars of our Business Plan

To ensure the effective management of our school, the NMESC Business Plan has been developed around the following four core pillars: 1. Financial 2. Students and community 3. Teacher Process Learning and Growth

I would like to encourage you to please read this carefully and provide feedback on how we can improve

our school practices.

Kind Regards,

Penny Nunn, Principal

WORKPLACE LEARNING

The annual Newton Moore ESC 2017 concert is

the primary focus for all learning and lessons during term 2.

Students and staff have set themselves some high expectations this year and everyone has been busy creating, writing, rehearsing, and enjoying the process to put on an amazing night for family and friends.

The concert will be held on Tuesday June 20 at the school in the PAC from 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Tickets are $8 (includes dinner and a drink) and will be available for purchase at the front office from the start of week 5

MUSIC Term 2 update

This term the focus in the workshop is to finish a lot of the projects we started in term 1. We hope to get these projects into the shop as soon as possible.

These projects include a coffee table, phone table, 44 gallon drum table and various other projects.

All students enrolled in the workshop at this stage

are working very well and should be congratulated

for their efforts.

ITEM ITEM is about training in retail. As retail engages with the general public and the community, it is a

perfect platform for students to build on their self-confidence and resilience, progressing towards

independence.

We’ve had a busy start to the year at ITEM, welcoming back students from last

year (who are now on the home-run to completing their learning in retail) as well

as the wonderful staff and students from College Row.

In addition, we have gained an awesome year 11 crew and with so many

students, it means we are OPEN 5 DAYS a week! Trading everyday has been a

long term goal for us and it is great to finally reach it.

At the start of last term, we opened the doors to a very empty shop, as a result

of a very successful Christmas Fair in December last year. So, we have had to

move quickly to build new ideas for adding to our depleted stock line. With our

‘fresh-off-the-boat’ students getting into the swing and routine of shop life, they

have revealed to us a lot of talent for all things art and crafty. Exactly what we

need.

This term, together with the Workshop and Visual Arts, we are working towards

an Open Night, where we invite everyone and anyone who are unable to visit us

during the week, to view and purchase some high quality product. We are planning a raffle, which you

are not going to want to miss out on.

E7 The talented E7 students have started Photography with Miss Armelle. They are preparing a surprise for the whole school at end of term 2! More info in the next newsletter!!

We are located at 4a

Spencer Street, Bunbury

9:30—2:30 every day

F4

If I was you I’d wanna be F4 too! F4 has settled straight back into working hard this term.

We had the best time at the Mulit Sports Have a Go Fun Day late last term. The day was filled with meeting old and new friends, trying out lots of different sports, dancing to the awesome music and just having a great time in the sun.

We are so excited to be continuing our cooking program this term.

We are becoming more independent every day and enjoy helping each other master new skills.

G1A

G1A is learning about different countries around the world for Geography.

Students selected the name of a country out of a box and are currently

undertaking research so that they can become an expert on this country.

Students will be researching things on their country like capital cities, famous

landmarks, culture and environment. Once they have completed their

project, G1A will be creating an installation on the classroom wall which

students will be able to refer to during Geography lessons.

F1

G1

Here in F1 we have had a great start to term two! As part of our studies we

are looking at local history, aboriginal art and the science of day and night. We have

also launched our Genius Hour which is one hour per week in which the students

complete a research project around something they are interested in learning. We

have a whole range of research topics including the Ancient Romans, the history of

the camera and how to build a Lego city.

Thinking back to the end of term one, students highlights were our PBS fun day at the

pool and our ‘Fun in the Sun’ time that we spent as a class playing garden games. We

had games of twister, noughts and crosses, four in a row and a very focused round of chess.

We can’t wait for what the rest of term two brings!

We are already half way

through term one and we are

excited to see where the rest

of term takes us!

The creative creatures of G1 have been immersed

in the Kel Richards energetic adaption of the classic

gingerbread man story ‘ The Lamington Man’

After spending weeks studying the written form

they decided to bring it to life.

They constructed their puppets based on the

characters, learnt the script and artistically

recreated the scenes.

The performance was a triumph!

Stay tuned for more classics coming to a NMESC

stage soon!

C7 “Be the best you can be”

D10

D10 will be embarking on a journey of discovery about

significant events in History this term.

In week 10 of last term we began our Journey with ANZAC

Day. This was particularly exciting because I was able to

send a copy of the student’s art work to a family member

who is currently training to become a member of the AIF.

This is the same military unit that was involved in the

Gallipoli landing in 1915. I sent a copy of the following

photograph to this young man and he

replied with some very kind words.

D10 ANZAC Day commemorative Art

work

Here is what he said:

Hi,

That is really awesome. It is great to

know that people support what we are all about. I was

wrapped to hear that I was an inspiration to your students

doing such a great job in making their pictures look good.

ANZAC Day is very special to us soldiers. The other lads all

thought it was cool too. I have to train very hard every day

and it makes it worthwhile when you know

that people like your students are behind you.

Thanks a lot for thinking of me.

Private C.J. Barnes (Singleton Barracks NSW)

As you can see, the students put a lot of work into their art

work and were very respectful of the ANZAC Day spirit.

We have also discovered that Captain James Cook landed in

Botany Bay for the first time at the end of April 1770. To

mark this occasion, we took some time to learn about what

happened on that day and used our painting skills to

create a lovely display of his ship sail-

ing across the Pacific Ocean. We used

our maths skills to work out that this

all happened 267 years ago.

Our Endeavour paintings

We will be looking at the founding of

Fremantle in week two and three as Captain Charles

Fremantle raised the Union Jack there on the 2nd of May

1829.

D10 will also be starting water walking at the South West

Sports centre every Monday. Hopefully we will all get very

fit this term as lots of us are also going to be joining the

Dance team for Country Week and will be training hard.

We are also continuing on with our work placements and

other transition subjects, as well as constantly improving

our skills in maths, writing, reading and listening.

This term the Courageous C7 crew are looking at transitioning to work. The focus is taking accountability for ourselves to prepare for and plan our future.

This involves taking what we know about our style, our life experiences to date, to help us identifying jobs that are most likely to be a good fit for us.

So far we have completed our ‘My Life, My Plan’ workbooks and most of us have nearly completed our resumes. So our next step is to identify businesses in the local area where we might find jobs that suit us. As we progress with this journey we will be covering the areas of applying for jobs, cover letters and interview techniques.

This learning gives us the opportunity to create a future that will enable us "To be the Best we can Be". (Our class motto)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

E4 has started an Enterprise project this term and we have been busy making and sell-

ing soup! Our enterprise aims to combine several important life skills into a fun activity. We have also

generated a profit from our efforts and will be put towards a fun excursion for our class. We also decided

as a class, that we would like to donate some of our profits to charity.

E4 has also had the pleasure of trialling our schools Emotional Support Dog,

Mundy. He is a 6 month old Chocolate Labrador puppy

who is learning to be a valuable member of our school.

He has joined us a few times and has started making his

way around the school to several classes and meeting

students and staff. He is full of energy and has settled in

well so far!

Term 1 was busy!! Students took part in Athletics Carnivals, Multi Sports Days, beach excursions and

some were even lucky enough to go up to Perth to play games on the WACA and watch some Sheffield

Shield action. This term we are looking forward to another action packed term learning all about

basketball skills in PE and our bodies in Health.

STUDENT SERVICES

Student Services Update

Welcome to Term Two from the student services team.

Our breakfast club has been going well and the team are working hard to improve and implement new initia-tives to support students in class and at break times.

There is a social skills group starting this Friday that will lead to peer mentoring and some fun and fantastic break time activities very soon. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our staff and students on a very calm and resilient start to the term with minimal incidents and maximum reflection taking place leading to great choice making and results.

The PBS Student Council has been working very hard and we have now received our new and improved chocolate wheel for our PBS assemblies. The Student Council would also like to welcome Owen to the team this term to keep up the great communication flowing and student voice.

Our wonderful Parkerville social workers, Petrina and Kayla are fully underway for Term Two at NMESC with a range of whole and small group sessions taking place covering protective behaviours, social skills and healthy relationships.

One to one counselling sessions have begun and the fortnightly parent morning tea sessions are gathering momentum. There are two parent information sessions this term in Week 5 covering Protective Behaviours for parents and Week 9 covering Cyber safety for parents. All other odd weeks are general catch up and so-cialising sessions.

We encourage you to come along, have a cup of tea and a biscuit and share and receive great tips for work-ing with our wonderful students.

Parkerville will be providing professional learning for our teaching staff in Term Two around grief and loss and how to support our students in this manner.

We look forward to a fabulous Term Two.

Good nutrition is vital for everyone’s brain, especially for teens.

This is the time when their brains, like their bodies, are maturing fast, so it’s important to make sure they

are getting all the nutrients they need to keep their grey matter in top shape.

Hydrate

The most important thing they can do is drink water, so they are well hydrated. Water helps the brain to

function properly, and good hydration can improve your teen’s memory, focus, clarity and creativity.

Take care of their bodies too

Growing teenage bodies need extra calcium and iron, so encourage your teenager to include plenty of both

in their diet. Getting enough calcium is important for your teen’s bone density and can help build strong

bones for life. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, beans, bean products (like tofu and soy

milk), nuts and seeds, sardines, seaweed, wholegrain cereals and leafy greens.

Your teen needs more iron for their growing muscles and increasing blood volume. Getting enough iron is

particularly important for teenage girls. Good sources of iron include red meat, legumes such as beans and

lentils, wholegrain and fortified cereals.

Wholegrain cereals

Wholegrain cereals, breads and pastas are ideal for keeping your teen mentally alert during the day. They

have low GI, so they release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, providing a steady supply of energy.

Brain food: it’s food for thought

Fruits, nuts and vegetables

Oranges, capsicums, guavas, dark green leafy

vegetables, kiwifruit, broccoli and blackcurrants are

rich in vitamin C, which has long been thought to in-

crease mental agility.

Broccoli, asparagus, green herbs like basil, sage and thyme, and hot spices like chilli are great sources of vitamin K, which is another important brain nutrient believed to enhance cognitive function. Nuts, olives, seeds, brown rice and green leafy vegetables are a great source of vitamin E, another essential nutrient for developing brains
