NOVEL IDEA Tailor made ADC Prof. Atul K. Joshi

Sometimes it we fall in dilemma for selection of ADC for a particular application so we search ADC device on net for the desired specification. Generally we get ADCs with resolution like 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit, 16-bit etc. but if the required resolution falls in between above said commercially available ADCs, e.g. 9-bit ,11-bit, 13-bit and so on then, here is the possible solution. Select a microcontroller having in built:

1. 16-bit timer /counter with PWM facility

2. Analog comparator

3. IIC capability

The hardware scheme can be made as shown in figure:

The conversion technique is based on successive approximation. PWM block outputs a duty cycle proportional to the count in it. It is then filtered with Low pass filter having proper cutoff frequency. The output of the filter is buffered and attenuated according to desired full scale. The same is used to drive one of the input of internal analog comparator. The other is driven by PWM buffer. The applied analog input voltage is compared with the output of PWM section by setting MSB of the PWM count register. If the comparator is triggered then, the MSB is cleared and second MSB is set. The process is repeated till the last bit in the PWM count register. The last iteration will give the digital equivalent of analog input voltage. The PWM count register can then be transferred to IIC register or to the output port of the controller. The software block of the process can be treated as an ADC function.
