WHOLE SCHOOL EVACUATION PRACTICE
Yesterday we had another whole school evacuation practice. We do this at least two -three times a year and each time we practise another scenario. Our emergency management plan is very comprehensive and takes into account the possibility of evacuating to an onsite area, off-site or to stay indoors in a lock-down situation. Our whole school is able to be evacuated and assembled in less than fifteen minutes with every student accounted for in that time, even those students who may have been at the office, doing a monitor’s job or at the toilet.
Our evacuation practice yesterday was supervised and observed by a representative from Dynamiq, (formerly EMQ) an emergency management provider whom we have worked with for the last five years. At least once every year, one of our evacuation or lockdown practices is observed and feedback is provided to ensure that we continue to ‘fine tune’ our organisation and response in a potential emergency situation.
Staff also participate in an annual emergency management training session which was held from 3.30 - 5pm yesterday. This session is facilitated by Dynamiq and ensures we are kept up to date with any systemic and or legislative changes along with informative discussions about our procedures and responses in range of different scenarios.
So if your child came home from school yesterday saying that we had to evacuate the building, then they were right, we did do this. Was it an emergency situation though? No it wasn’t but it was a practice just in case we do have an emergency situation to deal with and respond to.
PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR
The development of a grade structure is the first part of a complicated process in planning for next year. The number of classes we have is determined by the number of enrolments which then determines how many teachers and classrooms we are entitled to have. The placement of students into classes is the second part of this complicated planning process which needs to take into account the following variables:-
• the academic needs of each child and making sure that each grade has a reasonable spread of academic abilities
• having a reasonably even mix of boys and girls although gender imbalances at times makes this difficult to achieve.
• having similar class sizes (P-2, in the low 20’s and between 25 - 28 in yrs 3-6)
• taking into account both negative and positive influences of some students on each other and ensuring a spread of children with particular behavioural needs. Children can sometimes be split for behavioural reasons or for encouraging greater independence
• the social needs of children including current friendship groups, their ability to make new friends and their level of confidence and independence in the company of others. Children do have input into selecting a friend to be with but can’t be guaranteed of a successful outcome depending on some of the other considerations that also have to be taken into account
• parent requests based only on the educational and/or social needs of their child
If you would like to have input into helping to develop a suitable 2015 grade structure then look for information and a link to a planning grid on the home page of our website. Those who try this exercise each year generally find that it isn’t easy to do! Good luck!

Attention Grade 5 parents — 2015 GRADE 6 JACKETS
Sample jackets are now available at the school office for parents to personally size their own child for next year’s grade
6 jacket. These will be available until Friday November 7th. When requesting your child’s size, it is important to
factor in that these jackets will be worn next winter and throughout 2015 and that room for growth should be allowed.
Please note that it is essential that a parent actually oversee the fitting of the jacket, as no changes will be made after
the order is finally submitted.
Please contact the office if you need additional time in order to complete this. Regards, Kate Rodgers

STATE ATHLETICS
Outstanding performances were produced by the GK students that competed at the
State Primary Schools Athletics Championships held at Lakeside Track on Mon-
day.
The highlight was Josh P’s outstanding performance to win Silver in the 11 yr
boys triple jump. Josh produced a personal best jump of 9.8m to equal the gold
medal winning jump only to be beaten on count back. The 12/13 yr boys relay team
of Sam S, Kane F, Julian L and Lucas W and girls relay team of Kiara F, Macken-
zie C, Rhiannon S and Makayla P performed exceptionally well to win through
their heats to qualify for the final, with the boys finishing 4th and girls finishing 6th
place overall. Gr 5 student Jack C produced a great run in his 200m heat to qualify
for the final where he finished 8th. Lucas W competed to the best of his ability in
the 100m heats to finish 5th overall.
Congratulations to all of these students, to reach State level is a brilliant effort.
