It’s difficult to believe that another summer has passed and that we are well into the fall season. Once again I would like to thank the Halifax team for putting on an excellent meeting last May. The President (Dr. Dorion), the Scientific Program Chair (Dr. Tan), the Local Arrangements Chair (Dr. Bance) and our Executive Director (Ms. Humphrey) worked very hard to put together a first class scientific and social program. Attendance at the meeting was excellent and the feedback we’ve received on all aspects of the program has been very positive. As I look forward to the 2010 meeting in Niagara Falls I’m confident that this event will also be a great scientific and social success. My local arrangements chair, Dr. Len Makerewich, has been working tirelessly to seek out and lock down the best venues for our group to meet in. Our theme for 2010 is “Technology Transforming Patient Care” and we will try to highlight some interesting aspects of technology and how it impacts our work in the clinic and operating room. Our confirmed guest speakers include Dr. Douglas Chepeha (head and neck oncology) and Dr. Ross Mitchell (physicist – medical imaging). I’m pleased to announce that our guest of honour will be Dr. Julian Nedzelski. The welcoming reception has been booked at ElementsontheFalls Restaurant which has a spectacular view of the Horseshoe Falls. In addition, we will be hosting a fundraising event for the COHNS Fund on the Monday evening at the Inniskillin Winery. Among the highlights will be celebrity chefs Anna and Michael Olson showing off their skills while we enjoy local wine and food. The format of this year’s meeting was different than the past. The official opening on Sunday morning was wellattended and we also had record attendance at the Poliquin Residents’ Competition on Monday afternoon. Therefore, we have decided to stay with the same format for 2010. Dr. Tan will work his usual magic interweaving workshops, oral presentations and posters. The hard work of our CPD Chair, Dr. Sam Daniel, has enabled us to offer a fullyaccredited program that will allow you to maximize your CPD credits. I would also like to report that the Society, along with the University of Calgary and the University of Western Ontario, will be hosting a retreat for our newly formed Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Undergraduate Education Working Group. This group is something I’m very excited about and I’m very pleased that our Society is nurturing its development with significant financial and administrative support. Dr. Kevin Fung is chairing this group and he will be presenting the results of their work at the 2010 Niagara Falls meeting. PAGE 3 THE NEWSLETTER

President’s  Message... continued from page 1

Another very positive development  is  the  recent news  that  the  Journal of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery’s impact factor has increased to .758 from  its  prior  level  of  .497.    This  is  a  major  achievement  and  clearly validates  the hard work and strategic direction being  implemented by our co‐editors,  Drs.  Seikaly  and Wright.    If  we  can  continue  to  support  the Journal by sending  it our best work and by using some of  the approaches outlined by the editors at the Halifax meeting, we will continue to see the quality of this publication continue to increase in the years ahead.    Our new electronic media editor, Dr. Jason Franklin, has approached his job with enthusiasm and skill.  The web site, already improved, will continue to change  in  the  years  ahead  as  Jason brings  some of his  ideas  to  the  site.  Please remember to check it out at www.entcanada.org.  Finally,  it  almost  seems  traditional  to  report  on  the  long‐standing  issues with  the ABO.    I will break with  tradition and  indicate  that  I have nothing new to report on this subject.  In closing, I want to thank you all for allowing me to serve as your President.  It is a job I accepted with humility and enthusiasm.  Our Society is one that is based on strong social, professional and scientific bonds.   We are small, but not too small and as such, we continue to be able to get together, share new knowledge, enjoy each others  company and  trade  interesting  stories from the preceding year.   For the younger members of our group, and for the “older” members who have  thought about getting  involved:    step up.  The CSOHNS is always looking for new blood and I can only say that working for  this  Society  has  been  one  of  the most  personally  and  professionally satisfying things I’ve ever done.

 Joseph C. Dort, MD

                                                                                                President

“Our Society is one that is based on strong

social, professional and scientific bonds.”

Our sincerest appreciation is extended to council and committee members who have completed their terms of office this past May. Without the help of all our volunteers, the Society could not function!

Journal of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery The past year has been an exciting one at the Journal of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. We are very pleased to announce that Thomson Reuters hasreported our 2008 Impact Factor at .758, which is a significant increase from .497in 2007 and .368 in 2006. The Journal ranks at 25 out of 31 journals in ourcategory up from 27 out of 30 in 2007 and 29 out of 30 in 2006. For a journal of our size and readership, this represents a significant gain for which we are mostproud. While we have received 433 submissions from 33 different countries, ouracceptance rate has been 37.8%, with submissions primarily from Canada, Turkey, and the United States. If you are interested in more of these statistics youcan contact Stacey Leavitt-Wright, Managing Editor at [email protected]. Our Associate Editorship, announced in January, has also undergone somechanges. Our special thanks to Brian Blakley, Rob Hart, Jonathon Irish, Emad Massoud, Paul Moxham, and Ian Witterick for their diligent efforts that havehelped us to achieve our goals this year. This past year the Editors-in-Chief and Managing Editor conducted a workshop at the CSO meeting in Halifax on the topic of de-mystifying the manuscript submission and review process. Slides will be available on the CSO website.Watch for another exciting session at the Niagara Falls Meeting which will focuson the peer review process as well as understanding and enhancing thereviewer’s role in this process. Becoming a reviewer is an excellent way to contribute to the field whilekeeping abreast of cutting edge developments as they arise. If you areinterested in reviewing for the Journal then please contact Hadi [email protected], Erin Wright [email protected] or Stacey Leavitt-Wright at [email protected].
