HEADLINE NOTICES Spring Half-Term
A reminder to all parents and carers that school resumes for all students following the Spring half-term break on Monday 25th February 2019 at 08.30am. Details regarding half-term revision sessions for Years 11-13 have been issued separately.
Year 12 ‘City Career Insight Walk’
Our Year 12 students had a fantastic opportunity last week to engage in a ‘City Career Insight Walk’ with a focus on careers in Business and Finance. Our students worked with representatives from The Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales, as well as Her Majesty’s Treasury, to learn not only about relevant qualifications but also international leadership that shapes the future of accountancy and finance. The event also offered students a real insight into careers in accountancy and economics. As part of the day, our students participated in an interactive commercial awareness activity, role plays and presented to accountants and economists, who were very impressed with their understanding and abilities to adapt and deliver under pressure. By the end of the session, they were able to analyse situations from a business perspective and recognise what makes an organisation. A great event all round.
Year 8 Mathematics Students at Imperial College
Last week, some of our Year 8 students attended Imperial College, London, for an exciting Mathematics master class. As part of this visit, students covered a wide variety of mathematical topics including surface area and volume, properties of 2D & 3D shapes, as well as measuring and calculating the density of different metals. Later they were involved in measuring the area of the “Queens Field” in real life. They were put in groups, equipped with measuring tapes and, with no further explanation, asked to find out the area of the “Queens field” which is a field just outside of the Imperial College site. Students were encourage to come-up with strategies of measuring the field and all agreed that their final calculation was only an estimate of the area as more reliable means of measuring were needed. In the afternoon session students were treated to the mathematics of rockets science and how rockets function, before being given an opportunity to build their own Balloon Rockets using toy cars propelled using a balloon. Students reported that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and that their learning from the day was a great help to their school-based studies.

THEME & WORD OF THE WEEK
Success or Failure ‘My will shall shape the future.
Whether I fail or succeed shall be no one’s doing but my own. I am the
force; I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze. My
choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny.’
Prodigy ‘An outstanding example of a
particular quality.’

It’s time to plan ahead and consider a range of book characters from Shakespearean plays, Roald Dahl’s stories, Victorian novels, romantic poetry, modern classics... and many staff will join in too! Year 11 GCSE Maths Enrichment Event
On Thursday 31st January 2019, selected Year 11 students attended this year’s Enriching Minds GCSE Mathematics event at Baldon House, Oxfordshire, as part of their examination preparation. The students were engaged by a number of very inspirational mathematicians on a variety of topics and attended workshops on juggling, patterns and 3 dimensional shapes. This was a really enriching and enjoyable learning experience for the attending students. Any questions, please see Mrs. Brocklesby.
Kingsdale Perform at the Royal Festival Hall Our Kingsdale percussion group once again provided a highly impressive performance in the Clore Ballroom at the Royal Hall, Southbank on Thursday 31st January 2019. This was part of the Southbank Percussion Festival which have performed over a number of years to primary schools from across the London Borough of Southwark. This percussion event was followed by a huge orchestral workshop and concert for parents on Monday 11th February 2019, once again in the Clore Ballroom, with 45 Kingsdale students (mostly Grade 5-8) took part alongside primary age pupils, performing music from West Side Story, Finlandia by Sibelius, and Bochiana by Villa Lobos. The conductor was Scott Stroman from the Guildhall school of Music and Drama. Everyone played beautifully and the performances for both events showed commitment, musicality as well as a huge amount of talent. Well done to all of our students.

Year 9 Boys through to Semi Final of the Inner London Cup!
Last week saw a great win for the Year 9 Boys’ Football team who beat Forest Hill Boys 4-3 on penalties in the Quarter Final of the Inner London Cup. The first goal came from Zak Lovelace with a great strike from outside the box but Forest Hill fought back to equalise and with 15 minutes to go, the match remained 1-1. During extra-time, despite Kingsdale having played some great football, the score was still 1-1. The boys had to face the dreaded penalties! Forest Hill won the toss and selected to take the first kick. The score rallied back and forth and now the penalty shoot-out was at sudden death. With Forest Hill missing their shot, Kouske stepped up to be the hero of the hour for Kingsdale - scoring a great low shot into the bottom left and winning the game! Goal scorers were Aamir, Zak, Santiago, Jack and Kosuke. Good luck to the boys in the Semi Finals.
Year 10 Rugby Winners! Congratulations to the Year 10 Boys’ Rugby team for their 33 -0 win over Hayes School, including tries from Finlay Tozer and Blaise Treverton before and after half-time. Star of the game was Francesco Calemma for his superb hat trick beating a number of defenders on each occasion with his lethal step. The ball carrying from the whole team was excellent. Well done to the whole team.
Year 7 Girls’ Netball Teams Champions - Southwark Netball Championships
A massive well done to the Year 7 A and B Netball teams who played in the Southwark Netball Championships on 7th February 2019. The girls had a great day and played some fantastic netball. As a result of the high standard of netball at the school, and the commitment of the girls, the B team was also entered into a field of the best teams in Southwark. Both A and B teams put in exceptional performances with our B team finishing 3rd overall in the whole tournament and our A team coming away as Southwark Champions. We look forward to March when Kingsdale will go on to represent Southwark in the London Youth Games at Crystal Place!

He embarks on an epic journey, in which he encounters dangers and cruelties - and great acts of human kindness - as he bravely makes his way to a future he can only imagine. Told in the powerful first person, this startling debut novel will encourage understanding and empathy in young readers, and allow the news headlines of the day to resonate with the humanity involved in creating them.
