SCHOOL CLOSING INFO

Anthony Middle Schoolanthony.mpls.k12.mn.us612.668.3240

Safet y First

Closing school is a complicated decision that affects students, staff and families. Our schools provide students with a safe and stable place to learn. Some students rely on the school district for breakfast and lunch. Closing school may cause some families hardships related to finding childcare. Closing school is an exception and we do everything possible to keep schools open.

The primary criteria we consider when making a decision include:

- The safety and well-being of students and staff- Severity of the weather (extreme cold, flooding, etc.)- Timing of weather (overnight, weekend, etc.)- The ability for buses and cars to travel safely

We continually monitor the forecast from the National Weather Service, and the superintendent meets with numerous administrators in order to make the best decision for students, staff and families. Staff members work throughout the evening and early morning each severe weather day to ensure that buses will run at or near schedule and that students will be safe. Transportation staff members work closely with bus vendors and Metro Transit to ensure the buses are ready for cold weather situations.

Making t he Decision

The superintendent makes a decision after consulting with the administrative team and other stakeholders as needed. The superintendent may consult with the superintendents from other metro school districts and the Minnesota Department of Education for additional perspective. The communications department communicates it to families and staff.

WINTER RESOURCES

NOTIFICATIONSIn the event that school is closed due to severe weather, MPS makes every attempt to notify families as soon as possible. We notify via automated phone calls, the MPS website and individual websites, local television news and social media.

Parents can help by making sure their contact information as well as emergency contact is regularly updated with their school. You can update your communication preferences (e.g., phone, email) on the School Messenger website, but you should contact your school direction to update your contact information.

Minneapolis Public Schools understands school closures can have an impact on families. We're committed to providing resources to famlies to lessen these impacts. Click here for recommended resources during school closures and breaks.

Wint er Gear

If any student needs winter gear, please see a dean or the social worker, [email protected]. We notice a lot of students who come to school without a coat or winter gear. It 's important to dress warm in case of drastic weather changes from morning to afternoon or in case of a vehicle/bus breakdown.

GRA DE LEVEL NEWS

Anthony Middle Schoolanthony.mpls.k12.mn.us612.668.3240

6TH GRADE - New Quar t er , New Planner & Oppor t un i t y t o Focus on Organizat ional sk i l ls!Now is the time to use your 3rd quarter planner daily in all your classes. You are starting 3rd quarter, and one of the key factors to academic success is to be organized. Organizational skill sets in middle school vary greatly from low to high levels. Every Anthony 6th grader is capable of recording learning targets, assignments, due dates for projects and test information.

With the beginning of a new quarter, it allows you to reflect and recommit to academic excellence. Achievement is obtainable when you become an organizational guru.

Make a commitment to carry your planner to all classes and record all pertinent information during the class. At night, review your day with your parents. Efficient and consistent use of the planner reduces stress, advances learning and provides information at a glance. All successful people are organized, record daily tasks and perform work and personal tasks on a timely basis. Implementing or advancing your organizational skills makes for a dynamic plan of action. Start today and accept the challenge to form the habit of using the planner for the remainder of the school year.

8TH GRADE - MAKE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CHOICEAttention ALL 8th grade families who live in Minneapolis: Minneapolis High School requests are due for priority placement by February 8t h. Families can complete the High School request form online at: http://schoolrequest.mpls.k12.mn.us/onlinerequest

* Ms. Gustafson is requiring ALL 8th graders who are Minneapolis residents to request a Minneapolis High School for next year, even if they currently are not planning to attend one. Feel free to reach out to Ms. Gustafson with questions at [email protected].

2019 GEOGRA PHY BEE

Anthony Middle Schoolanthony.mpls.k12.mn.us612.668.3240

On Friday, January 18th, ten very talented students competed to be the Anthony Middle School National Geographic Bee 2019 champion. To qualify for the finals, students had to excel in their class competition and perform well on a qualifying test. The f inalist s were Maxim us Davis, Kar l Fuhr , Zoe Gibson, Char les Hubanks, Robbie Lee, Kieran McGuire, Henry Nafziger -Whit e, Lukas Paavola, Ben Rosielle, and Henry Barnhar t .

After several rounds of tough competition the field was narrowed down to our t wo f inalist s, Maxim us Davis and Henry Barnhar t . The championship

round was close to the final question but the Geography Bee Cham pion for 2019 was Maxim us Davis.

Next up, Maximus will take the National Geographic qualifying test to see if he is eligible to represent Anthony at the state competition at the end of March.

The Anthony Debate team had their first tournament January 17th. We had some tough competition, debating against Lake Harriet, Field and local powerhouse, Barton. We brought 15 amazing debaters ranging from brand new to third year. The topic they are debating is Immigration and Open Borders. Students are required to have arguments for BOTH sides of the issue, which is pretty tough!

Som e highlight s of our m at ch:

Char les Hubanks got an award for #1 speaker in his category.

Mar lowe Lindberg, Lil iana Devereaux, Daniel Frost , MIles Kujawa, Sant iago Lala, Abby Becker and Oscar Sm it h all received medals the very first time they debated for the Anthony Team!

A total of 13 awards were given to Anthony debaters.

And, to top it off, the team of Lily Cade and Lil iana Devereaux beat out 6 Barton teams for the #1 Team award at the JV level!

Way to go Anthony!

Our next debate tournament will be Thursday, February 21st.
