FROM THE PRINCIPAL CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

The college senior curriculum in 2010 will include access for our students to more than forty courses. The most difficult decision faced by many students was eliminating subjects because there were so many in which they were interested! Each student will receive confirmation of her subjects within the next few days. H.S.C. Trial Examinations Please continue to remember our Year 12 students in your prayers as they sit for their final trial papers over the next few days. Vinnies Van Thank you very much to Mrs Cathy Moran and Mrs Elaine Manders who took the van out for our college this month. Their generosity is greatly appreciated. Premiers’ Reading Challenge All students in Years 7 and 8 are encouraged to increase their reading efforts over the next two weeks before this challenge concludes! At this stage only a relatively small number have completed this challenge. Celebration of the Assumption Thank you very much to our Student Liturgy Committee, Ms Morley and Mr Corrigan for their preparation of our college liturgy. Mary is a great role model for each of us as she always tried to do what God wanted her to do and accepted God’s involvement in her life. May we, too, always try to be open to all that God is asking us to do. Yours sincerely Ms Christine Howe Principal

Caroline Chisholm College Beefs It Up

The golden rays reflected from the soft mist rising from the dew covered grass. Pure Poll Hereford Cattle from 15 Cumberland Plains High Schools, bellowed and reacted to the early morning shampoo and blow dry given

by their preparation teams. Hoofs are polished and hairspray adds a final touch. Concurrently, other teams set up their cattle stalls containing the tools, feed, comfortable straw bedding. They install visual displays and journals depicting the learning journey of the students and steers, which started in May when the 11 month old steers were allocated to each school. Caroline Chisholm’s Steer earned a grand name of Optimus Prime and started his journey at a petite 330 kg. By mid August, he had muscled up to 460 Kg. Yet our Year 9 and 11 Agriculture girls, whose average weight is 60kg, showed the confidence and skill to proudly parade him around the Showground paddock. This was a busy day of competitions watched by parents. Students were judged on their husbandry skills and their ability to select the steers that would yield the greatest amount of meat. Students had to pluck up their courage to speak on the microphone to demonstrate the depth of their knowledge producing the right steer for the local market requirements. Only one result was revealed on the day. How good was Optimus Prime compared to his relatives? We knew Caroline Chisholm was in the top group with steers from Bede Polding, Oakhill, Richmond High, Richmond TAFE and Northholm Grammar. A fourth place was vindication for all the months invested by the girls in breaking him in and building him up. The journey continues on 24th August. Optimus and his student team will travel to Gosford, for the Central Coast Steer Show to compete again in a series of competitions. Unfortunately, at the end of this fateful day, Optimus Prime will be led onto the semi-trailer by his tearful team for the final journey on his way to our plates. His carcases will be judged and the cumulative results will be announced at the Closing Ceremony at UWS. Teachers: Ms Shelley Baldwin and Mr Geoffrey Clerke. YEAR 7 REFLECTION DAY YEAR 8 REFLECTION DAY

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

The year 7 reflection day was held at Caroline Chisholm College with perfect weather conditions. The girls were provided with an overview of the day’s activities and outcomes that were to be achieved. We started with prayer and sang the song “Receive the Power”. This was the anthem from last year’s World Youth Day celebrations and the theme for our reflection day. Mrs Lowden-Menz shared with the group some of her life experiences and explained that the journey is just as important as the end result. The students then moved to their work spaces where they were paired with another homeroom. In the first session, the girls completed several work sheets about themselves, including their personal profile, likes, dislikes, beliefs, hopes and ambitions for the future. These were then filed into a time capsule that will be archived until 2014 when the girls complete Year 12. In session two the girls looked back on their experiences in primary school and their journey to date. They identified the positive qualities that have helped them along the way and some of the negative things that they need to leave behind. Students created labelled bricks to symbolise how they have been weighed down by this negativity and created a product of hope to remove it from their lives.

At recess and lunch the students enjoyed the opportunity to share fun, food and friendship. All spoke positively of their experiences and hopefully it will be a memory that they look upon fondly in years to come. In the last session we focused on the talents each of us possess and developed awareness that we should share these gifts with others. The day concluded with a liturgy in which the girls listened respectfully and sang with great gusto. A massive thankyou goes to all the girls who thoughtfully participated in each of the activities. Your good manners and enthusiasm contributed significantly to the success of the day. I would especially like to thank the members of the homeroom team Ms Janine Balite, Mrs Judith Lowden-Menz, Mr Adam MacNamara, Mr Stephen McIlveen, Miss Lisa Rowe and Mr Michael Stevenson who not only facilitated the day for each of the groups but also encouraged the girls to participate and reflect on their achievements and goals for the rest of the year. Furthermore, a huge thank you needs to be given to Miss Claire O’Brien for her support both in the organisation and the running of the day and to Ms Bernadette Murray for the behind the scene work that goes into preparing for a day like this. Mr Damien Mills Year 7 Leader of Learning

A beautiful winter’s morning greeted Year 8 at school on Tuesday 18th August where the students began a day of reflection amongst staff and friends. The theme for this year’s day was one of love is patient and kind while being a light unto the world. Preparation for this day began several weeks ago when the students were asked to create teams for the ice breaker session in the morning where a trivia competition would be held. As well as this, several discussions were had in regards to the planning, choosing music, and student involvement. It was a team effort from the very beginning. Some key outcomes for the day included: • Students to see that name-calling, rumours and bullying are

against God's plan • Students to see their uniqueness as women • Students to recognise hospitality, respect, manners as

essential to the community. Throughout the day a series of activities challenged the students to begin to see the deeper qualities that make a woman, develop communication skills and find common ground among their peers. The trivia was a success in that the Year 8 staff team claimed the trophy, but also with the coolies, smiggles and BST all claiming prizes. We were very grateful to have Fr. Kevin spend some quality time with the students as he discussed St Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians which tied in very well with our theme, as the students discovered that petty jealousies and unkindness existed too in the early church. Mid morning saw the students experience a very different kind of beauty challenging them to see past the superficial outside and where true beauty comes from, with some inspirational ‘beauty tips’ from the very selfless Audrey Hepburn. As we approached the afternoon session the Year 8 students discussed Jesus' personal request for each one of us to "love one another" as is reflected in our Baptismal promises that are

usually made for us at Baptism, endorsed by us at our Confirmation and recommitted by us each year at Pentecost. Our reflection day saw us make these promises once again to dedicate ourselves to each other as people of love. Year 8 through their liturgy washed away the times that we have been

simply impatient and unkind. A bowl of water tinged with the fragrance of eucalyptus was placed at the front of the Liturgy, this symbol was meant to make us less negative and more open to love. It also reminded us of the benefits and beauty of this wonderful land. Each student was invited to come forward and wash away that hurt by dipping their thumb in the water and making the sign of the cross with their thumb on their forehead. Throughout the day we had some wonderful contributions by students in all sessions, but a particular mention to the singing group of Anna Setiu, Daphne Amatanuai, Madelaine Caruana, Sarah Thornton, Alexa Galvez, Montanna Geyer, Mary Anne Leonardo and every student who contributed and got something from the day. A very special thank you to all the Year 8 team and support staff for their patience and kindness throughout the day: Fr. Kevin, Ms Agar, Mr Petit, Mrs Duchesne, Ms Newton, Mrs Mills, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Brown, Ms Mabon, Mrs Hughes, Ms McPherson, Mrs McElroy and to Ms Murray our R.E.C. for your resources and support in the lead up to the day. A final thank you Mrs Dent and the library team who responded to the disruption to their working environment with patience and kindness. Miss Laura Connolly - Year 8 Leader of Learning

YEAR 9 REFLECTION DAY YEAR 10 REFLECTION

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Year 9 had an enjoyable experience last Tuesday as they took time out from their studies to participate in the annual reflection day at Yarramundi. All of Year 9, accompanied by their homeroom and support teachers, set off early on Tuesday morning for our venue, the Lutanda Recreation and Conference Centre at Yarramundi. The theme of our day

was “My Relationship with God’s Creation” which was very appropriate considering t h e b e a u t i f u l b u s h surroundings of the venue and the abundance of wildlife, particularly in the form of bell birds, which inhabited the area.

After coming together to view a short power-point presentation depicting a variety of natural wonders that God has blessed us with, we broke into three groups to appreciate the wonders of creation through three different and varied activities. The first activity was a casual stroll down to the river, experiencing the beauty of our natural surroundings and the calmness and stillness of the slow moving river. The second activity focused on our appreciation of the detail, complexity and unique qualities of God’s creations that often go unnoticed through the hustle and bustle of the day. The third and final activity focused on our own uniqueness through a leaf decorating task that incorporated each student’s name. After a relaxing lunch break, we all gathered together in the dining room to share a special liturgy, specifically designed to draw together all the previous activities. Experiencing the beauty and uniqueness of God’s creation, sustaining and caring for God’s creation and lastly, focusing on God’s greatest creation, …. us. A very special thank you to all the Year 9 team and support staff for their superb guidance and instruction throughout the day: Mr Greg King, Mrs McMillan, Mrs Cocks, M r s J a c k a , M r s Kozlowski, Mr Clerke, Mrs Portelli, Mrs Rigg, Mr Walker, Tanya Bouyloulcos and Miss Mathieson. Mr Richard Caws Year 9 Leader of Learning

On Tuesday 18th August, Year 10 enjoyed their reflection day at Mt Schoenstatt. The theme for the day was "Putting the US in Justice". We were blessed with beautiful sunny weather on the day, and both students and staff enjoyed spending some time outside of the classroom participating in a variety of activities. In the first activity, students were asked to form and justify their opinions on a range of social issues. Students then developed their team work skills and built towers out of newspapers. We played some more active games in the sunshine that gave us the opportunity to feel what it was like to be the outsider in a situation, and learnt lots of new facts about inequality and consumption in our trivia quiz. Then students were allocated groups to represent the different classes of society. We had very few people who were very wealthy, and who shared a very large bowl of chips. There was another group with just a few more

students, who had a bowl of chips to share that was sufficient to go around, but not excessive. Finally, we had a very large group of students to represent the very poor, who shared just one or two chips between them. This gave students an insight into the unequal distribution of wealth

in the world and how it might feel to be part of one of those groups. Recess and lunch were enjoyed outside on picnic blankets with shared food and friends. Mt Schoensttat was a lovely venue to relax and enjoy the different atmosphere and sunshine. Our day ended with a liturgy that echoed our theme. As part of our liturgy we placed at the altar some small slips of paper on which was written our wish for the world, and how we could contribute. I hope that all students are now challenged to take action to help make the world a more equitable and

welcoming place for all. Ms Penny Prosser Year 10 Leader of Learning

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS CAROLINE CHISHOLM

COLLEGE

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS August is a busy month for Creative Arts students. Here are some of the competitions and curriculum events that have taken place or are coming up this month ... Senior Dance Performance Night On Monday 3rd August, Year 12 Dance students presented their finished works for their HSC practical exams as a final practice before an audience. The girls performed their Core Performance pieces that are intended to show their technique and performance quality. They are dancing a lyrical piece choreographed by Mrs Hughes to music by The Kings of Leon, Revelry. They also performed their Major study works which are longer more intensive pieces. One of the other components of the HSC Dance syllabus is the Core Composition component where the girls choreograph their own work that presents an idea or motif. They then must teach their work to another student from Yr 7-11. We would particularly like to thank the students working with Yr 12 Dance students, Danica Hartley, Georgia Mulock, Tanya Reibel and Chelsea Tinapay for their commitment and time. The Yr 12 Dance students will be presenting their works for the HSC Practical Examination on Monday August 24th and we wish them well. McDonald Performing Arts Challenge On Sunday 16th August, the College representative Contemporary and Jazz Dance troupes performed at the University of NSW as part of the prestigious McDonalds Performing Arts Challenge, a competition that attracts entries from across Sydney and the State. The Contemporary Dance troupe performed a work to the piece Mad World from the film Johnny Darko and created images of the impersonal and disconnected nature of modern life. While they were not placed in this large field of entrants, the judges complimented the troupe on their well rehearsed performance as well as Mrs Hughes choreography and phrasing in the piece. The Jazz troupe performed a work to music by the Presets, My People. They performed extremely well amongst the 37 entries and received a Highly Commended award which is an outstanding achievement in a field this size. The girls have put in an enormous effort with dedicated rehearsal and they are to be congratulated on their performance and representing the school so positively. We would like to particularly acknowledge the leadership role of the Year 12 students as well as their commitment to this competition during their trials. Mrs Brooke Hughes and Ms Michelle Latty choreographed the works and Mrs Hughes rehearsed with the girls over many afternoon and lunchtime rehearsals as well as organising through the day and evening of the competition. We thank her for their hard work and generous commitment. CC Singers at the Penrith Eisteddfod On Thursday 20th August, the Elite Vocal Group and School Choir or CCC Singers as they are known will be performing at the Penrith Eisteddfod in the demanding Senior Choir sections. Ms Claire O’Brien has worked extremely hard preparing the girls and we thank her for her commitment and energy. The Elite Vocal Group will be presenting a medley from “Mamma Mia” songs and “Weather With You”by Crowded House. The C.C. Singers will be performing “Watch Over Me” by Bernard Fanning and the gospel favourite “I Go To The Rock”. We would also like to thank Ms Megan Gray and Mr Greg Agar for their support of the Singers this year. We wish them well in the competition. Senior Music Night On Wednesday 27th August, the Year 12 Music I students will be presenting their Performance Program for their HSC exam to an audience of their parents and friends as a rehearsal for the exams. It is always a thoroughly entertaining evening with each girl presenting a range of pieces reflecting their elective studies. Pieces are from a wide range of styles including contemporary works to Jazz and Blues and Country and Western genres as well as numbers from Musical theatre. Their actual HSC exam will be held at the College in early September and we wish them well. Ms O’Brien, their class teacher and Mr Caws and Mr Stevenson have supported them through their advice and work as accompanists for their pieces and we thank them for their hard work preparing the girls. Visual Arts – Bodies of Work Exhibition Wednesday 2nd September, 4.30 -6.30pm Visual Arts students will be exhibiting their HSC Bodies of Work on Wednesday 2nd September in the top floor of the South Block. This is an opportunity for the parents and friends of the girls to see the works in their finished form and to celebrate their achievements. We would like invite all members of the College Community to come and see the exhibition. It would be of particular interest to Visual Arts students in Years 9 -11 and students who are intending to take Visual Arts in 2010 so that they can see the wonderful standard of the work being submitted. It will only be open for that evening and at recess and lunch the next day. The works are being marked for the final assessment and then they will be packed ready for the marking process. Penrith Show This year over 81 Visual Arts students have entered their work into the Penrith Show. A wide range of works including ceramics, painting, drawings, photography and printmaking have been submitted. Much of the work is class work but some works from the extension drawing group have been entered as well as Year 12 works. The works will be exhibited at the Show on the weekend of August 29th and 30th so please have a look at the wonderful work submitted by the girls. HSC Practical Works and Performance Examinations Over the next few weeks at the end of August and in early September, our Year 12 Creative Arts students in Dance, Visual Arts and Music will be presenting their practical works for their HSC Examinations. Dance students will be examined on Monday August 24th. Visual Arts students will be required to submit their finished Body of Works on Monday 7th September no later than 9am. Music students will be presenting their performances and Viva Voce pieces to HSC examiners in early September. As yet we have no date for this from the Board of Studies but the girls will be informed about the date as soon as it is sent to us. We wish them all the best in their final preparation and in their examinations. Karen King, Leader of Learning - Creative Arts

The purpose of NFS is to provide services to frail aged persons, people with a disability and their carers so that they remain independent in their homes. The organisation delivers over 45,000 meals per annum; we can only achieve this through the wonderful assistance from our volunteers.

Congratulations to all the students from Caroline Chisholm College who are currently participating in this program, from an organisational perspective it is great to see the enthusiasm of all the students. The feedback from the volunteers and clients has been terrific, NFS truly value their contribution and appreciate the schools initiative to collaborate with us on this program.

Leaving the College in 2010? Each year a small number of families leave the college - usually because of geographical relocation. All families are reminded that a term’s notice of any intention to leave the college is required - unless the student is graduating in Year 12. This early notice allows us to make appropriate plans for future classes.

Change of date The Year 10 Formal was in the calendar on 9th December, this has now been changed

to 3rd December.
