Happy New Year! I hope you had a relaxing holiday season and are looking forward to the year ahead.

This year is shaping up to be an exciting one for the Mint. The year kicked off in style with people queuing for the chance to be one of the first 100 people to strike a coin on our newly themed Gallery Press. This year the theme honours the Centenary of the Tarns-Australian Railway, paying tribute to the iconic journey between east and west that was instrumental in connecting our nation after federation .

The Stuart Devlin – The Designer with the Midas Touch exhibition is now open and we are thrilled to be sharing the story of Devlin with the public. For those able to visit the exhibition I recommend that you book in for one of our guided tours. These tours provide an interesting insight into the story behind the masterful objects on display.

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SINKING OF THE

SS VYNER BROOKE

This year we mark the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Vyner Brooke and remember the devastating effects of the aftermath and inspiring struggles for survival which followed.

As the Second World War gripped the Pacific, the SS Vyner Brooke was called to evacuate medical staff and the wounded from Singapore. Stalked by Japanese aircraft for two days in February 1942, the SS Vyner Brooke was sunk in Banka Strait, east of Sumatra. Many of the passengers on board, although scattered, miraculously survived hours in the water to make it to Banka Island.

Depicting design elements from the SS Vyner Brooke and the location of the attack, this 20c uncirculated coin will appeal to those who seek military themes non-combatant in nature.

Debuting for Australia in 1952, Richard “Richie” Benaud OBE was one of cricket’s great all-rounders. Consistent effective leg-spin bowling and explosive batting earned Benaud the Australian team captaincy from 1958. Retiring in 1964, Benaud had already taken steps to stay close to the game he loved, pursuing journalism and publishing his first book. For almost five decades after retiring Benaud continued to bring the game to life with live commentary.

This coin is a tribute to the voice of cricket, who was a beacon of integrity against the ups and downs of the game.

Leanne started working at the Mint in March of 2012 as a Public Programs Officer. In this role Leanne develops programs specifically to let members of the public get up-close and personal with parts of the National Coin Collection.

Leanne’s role also involves assisting with exhibitions and programs for the public, most recently with the development of the Stuart Devlin – The Designer with the Midas Touch exhibition. Leanne selected some of the coins and sketches from the National Coin Collection that feature as part of this exhibition. Leanne says her favourite pieces are the hand drawn portraits of the The Royal Ladies which can be viewed as part of the exhibition.

The Enlighten celebrations for 2017 are also being organised by Leanne who promises a very exciting experience for those able to attend. As part of the experience DJ Robot Citizen is going to create a dance party in an industrial space. With black lights, glow sticks and dancing by Rachel Reid and the Fabulous Fan

Veils Troupe, this will be a party that won’t be forgotten!

Is Leanne a coin collector herself? She wasn’t always she admits but since working at the Mint she can’t keep her eyes off some of the Mint’s beautiful silver proof coins. Her favourite coin in her collection is the 2012 $5 Silver Proof Colour Printed Domed

Coin – Southern Sky – Crux.

Designed by Stuart Devlin in 1982 the eight-light candelabrum is an exquisite piece and glittering example of the intricate craftsmanship behind Devlin’s designs.

The eight-light candelabrum has forged stems that stand on small polished balls which act to protect resting surfaces. The central rose bowl with an amethyst finial is removable and can be used separately. The eight-light candelabrum was designed in such a way as to look like melting wax while bearing Devlin’s signature filigree. The branches of the candelabrum support acetylene-pierced gilded filigree which hangs between the branches.

A comparable design approach was used in the impressive and mammoth 34-light candelabrum made for the Duke of Westminster which is similar in aesthetics to the eight-light candelabrum.

The eight-light candelabrum is now proudly on display as part of Stuart Devlin – The Designer with the Midas Touch exhibition at the Mint. Visit us today to see this item and more up-close.
