[1] February WWW.MODESTOSKICLUB.COM Volume 112 February 2013 President’s Message Dear MSC Members; As I write this many of you are on your first ski day at Snowmass / Aspen Far West Trip. I am thinking of all of you and wish all of you fun and safe trip. Racers, bring home some metals! On Saturday, I spent the day at Dodge Ridge with my grandkids, where I ran into four of our members helping with the Disabled Ski Program: Bill Silveira, Bryan Sparks, Jim Ambrosavage and Marci Boucher. I watched as they all prepared the volunteers/guides and the skiers for their ski session. I stood in line next to guides coaching their skier for the ride and encouraging them. Some guided the skiers down on special equipment; others just skied next to the skier. Many were spotters to make sure no one was behind or in front that could hurt the skier or the skier could hurt. I was truly amazed at the organization, kindness, and warm hearts that were in all of these volunteers. I wanted to take a moment to recognize the four that I saw from just our club, and if I missed you on the slope, I truly could not have comprehended the work that all of you put in to make limited ability skiers, SKI as I saw yesterday! Although I will not be able to personally ski with this program myself this year, I have made a commitment to contribute some time myself to this event next year. What an amazing way to give back to our community and society. In December 2011, as many of you know, I had rotator cuff surgery for three damaged tendons. Unfortunately, this surgery failed in December of 2012 and I am facing Reverse Shoulder Replacement on February 12th at USCF, MT Zion. I will be unavailable for about two weeks to attend club events and about 5 days from club business. If you need anything during this time please contract Cheryl Kelly or Pam Shelton. I will be back for the March Meetings. Our club has lots of activities coming up over this year so be sure to read about them inside this newsletter and on our website. Those of you wanting a camp site for the annual spring camping trip, in the group for Pinecrest on May 31-June 3, need to contact me soon. I only have 4 left in the group for reservation out of 12. Sincerely, Debra Clover President

LODGE NEWS News about the Lodge! Wow we have had a lot of use at the Lodge this Winter. We are in need of snow at the time this article is being written. The lodge is looking pretty good so far this Winter even with the heavy use. Be sure to do your part in keeping the Lodge Clean after your visit so the next guest finds the lodge clean for their visit. Just a couple of housekeeping issues to share with members. Please be sure to re-load the fire box with wood if you have used the fireplace during your visit. Turn lights off when not in the room or area, Please be sure to turn lights off when you leave to go skiing for the day and for sure when you leave to go home. One other important issue is the shades and curtains, be sure to close them when you are leaving the lodge after your stay. Spring work weekend proposed date is the weekend of April 26-28, 2013. Mark your calendar and save the date if you want to sign up for the Spring Work Weekend. If the lodge is in need of any supplies or has any issues, please contact me by phone or email to alert me. I can be reached on home phone 209-571-8125 or email [email protected].

Apr 5-7, 2013 Alpine Meadows Far West Championship – clinic & 2 races

During the month of January our Modesto Ski Club Race Team participated in the first four races of the 2013 Open League season. We did very well as we competed against 10 other ski clubs in our league as well as some clubs represented from the Sierra League and the singles League. The 4 races averaged over 130 racers competing. Our fastest racer in the first two races was Doug Ball with handicaps of 46.18 and 45.72. Ed Moody was the fastest racer in race 3 with a handicap of 55.39. Pat Moody had the honors in race 4 with a handicap of 53.04. Kyle Gahn was our fastest junior racer in all 4 races with handcaps that averaged 56.24. Our Season point leader is Chuck Hennings with a whopping 90 pts in 4 races! That's only 10 points shy of the maximum points a racer can get. Congratulations to Chuck. The team would also like to welcome our new racers Bill Silveira, Makala and Melina Cruz, and Nathan Gahn who had fun and did a fabulous job! Our next Open League races will be at Alpine Meadows on March 9th and 10th.

There will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy the groomed trails, fresh powder and breath taking scenery.
