Issue 02/2010

Dear readers,

READY TO FACE THE FUTURE: WITH VARTA START-STOP BATTERIESEU regulations stipulate that average vehicle CO2 emissions must fall below 130 g/km by 2012. The car industry is relying increasingly on Start-Stop technology in order to meet these requirements. With its innovative VARTA Start-Stop batteries, Johnson Controls is already well equipped to meet the demands of the future today.

The battery is the heart of every

Start-Stop system. This innovative

technology places a whole new

range of demands on batteries and

thus requires a tailor-made battery

solution. After all, a Start-Stop

battery is not only responsible for

generating sufficient energy to

start the engine, but must also

provide solutions to considerably

more complex challenges than

conventional starter batteries.

Johnson Controls has worked very

closely with leading car manufac-

turers to develop innovative

battery solutions. VARTA Start-

Stop batteries with EFB technology

were designed to meet the

demands of vehicles with standard

Start-Stop technology. VARTA

Start-Stop Plus with AGM technol-

ogy, on the other hand, is the ideal

solution for vehicles featuring

advanced Start-Stop technology

with integrated regenerative

braking and additional fuel-saving

technologies.

Johnson Controls is the world’s

leading manufacturer of vehicle

batteries, with more than 80 % of

all new Start-Stop vehicles being

factory-fitted with innovative

VARTA Start-Stop batteries. This is

a market with a promising future,

as around 70 % of all new vehicles

will be equipped with Start-Stop

technology by 2015.

With Johnson Controls’ VARTA

Start-Stop and VARTA Start-Stop

Plus batteries, you’re already

equipped for the future today.

You’re undoubtedly follow-

ing the public debate about

climate protection. It goes

without saying that the car

industry is not immune to

the ever-increasing demand

for an environmentally

sustainable economy.

New EU regulations have

forced the car industry to

develop new solutions, in

which the promising Start-

Stop technology will play

a key role, heralding a new

era in battery technology.

New technological develop-

ments in the car industry

have resulted in more

challenging demands being

placed on car batteries, as

they will now become the

sole provider of energy at

times, putting them at the

heart of future vehicles.

We’re delighted to be

able to provide informa-

tion about the new VARTA

Start-Stop batteries, a range

which already makes short

work of these demanding

requirements. It’s no won-

der 80 % of all new Start-

Stop vehicles are fitted with

VARTA Start-Stop batteries.

The Volkswagen Group presents a supplier with an award for entrepreneurial achievement every year. This year, Johnson Controls was chosen as a result of its joint venture to develop powerful, heat-resistant AGM Batteries.

This innovative battery technol-

ogy is helping Volkswagen to

provide sustainable solutions that

are consistent across all climates.

Experts agree that electric mobil-

ity can only be achieved gradu-

ally. “In the immediate future,

the biggest demand will be for

vehicles in the early stages of hy-

bridisation, that is with Start-Stop

technology. Solutions that reduce

fuel consumption and emissions

in these vehicles are in particular-

ly high demand,” says Eric Mitch-

ell, Vice President and General

Manager at Johnson Controls

Power Solutions EMEA. The

answer to this challenge is AGM

(Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries,

the heart of just such a system.

This technology improves

performance and increases the

service life of AGM batteries,

especially at higher ambient

temperatures. The batteries are

also considerably more corro-

sion-resistant and boast substan-

tially lower water consumption,

which in turn makes them more

heat-resistant. These character-

istics allow AGM batteries to be

installed at high-temperature

points under the bonnet, offer-

ing more freedom in the design

and making them ideal for use

in warmer environments.

Volkswagen and Johnson

Controls experts developed the

heat-resistant AGM technol-

ogy in Hanover. Available in

the standard sizes L5, L6 and

L7, the batteries are manufac-

tured in Zwickau and Hano-

ver, before being delivered to

nearly all Volkswagen factories

throughout Europe. These

powerful and eco-friendly new

batteries come as standard in

all BlueMotion models with

Start-Stop technology and

will be incorporated into even

more models in the future. The

emphasis on environmental

protection is not only reflected

in the way in which the vehi-

cle runs, but also in the entire

product life cycle of the battery.
