fresh talk

Welcome to another issue of fresh magazine. We hope that you’re enjoying

the swing into sunshine, optimism and the numerous weddings scheduled for

Spring.

It’s also the traditional season for testing out the stamina of race horses on

Sydney and Melbourne tracks. The stamina of racegoers is also tested with so

many Group 1 races and while the finest of horseflesh is on display so is the

finest of fashion. Clever designs adorn men and women as they embrace the

opportunity to dress up.

Brides of all ages and persuasions have always enjoyed this season so we’re

bringing you bouquets that demonstrate how to capture the colour of the track

in a complementary bridal and bridesmaid combination on pages 4 & 5. They

contrast with a softer dreamy, creamy construction for the romantic bride on

pages 6 & 7.

Sadly the other event that occurs throughout the spring and every other season

is also addressed in this issue. We demonstrate a casket design that has been

uniquely constructed to give an insight into the personality of the deceased

while our sympathy design offers gentle condolences to grieving loved ones.

On a brighter note floristry students around Australia have been busy entering

the Designz® Cup. This year’s theme invites entrants to pay tribute to a painter

and for the first time we’ve supplied every entrant with a 61cm OASIS® FOAM

FRAMES® Ring. This product has been used in many different ways with

very contrasting results so we hope you enjoy its versatility on pages 8 -11.

Happy reading!

Step 1: Construct orbs by rolling Bullion Wire between palms while still attached to the reel until

approximately two metres has been used and orb reaches desired size. Feed out more wire then

repeat the process twenty to thirty times. Unroll pink Aluminium Wire and scrunch into a flat oval disc

about 25 x 10cm across then insert bouquet holder through the middle and fasten with florist wire

creating a frame.

Step 2: Cover the handle of the saturated OASIS® Ladynette with orange Skeleton Leaves then wrap

them firmly with pink Metallic Wire. Lay the orbs over the wire frame and attach with hairpin wires

before adding layered Skeleton Leaves under the collar to create a skirt. Insert Trailing Vinca followed

by trails of Rhipsalis.

Step 3: Pluck the Kale leaves and secure them into the bouquet with hairpin wires then use the same

technique with the succulent leaves. Insert Zantedeschia stems into the foam followed by Oncidium.

The Banksia coccinea becomes the focal flower so ensure it’s inserted above the bouquet handle

to create a straight line and balance. Fill any gaps with Ming and Sea Star Fern before spraying with

Sprintingto the Altar

Capture all the vibrancy of the race track in a crescent-shaped design that’s bound to be a winner.

Lilies join with Orchids to dance around a pair of Banksias while longer stems float amongst

the draping lines of Trailing Vinca and Rhipsalis.

A dazzling pink collar and orbs provide contrast while reflecting the Crucifix Orchids at the top

of the design.

Step 1: Unravel five reels of Bullion Wire and mould into a large sphere. Flatten the

sphere to create a nest-like structure then insert the handle of a saturated OASIS®

Grande Straight Handle bouquet holder through the middle. Cover handle with orange

Skeleton Leaves then wrap them firmly with pink Metallic Wire.

Step 2: Construct strong pink Bullion Wire orbs by following the instructions in Step1 on

page 4. Insert Trailing Vinca into the bouquet followed by trails of Rhipsalis.

Step 3: Form a crescent-shape by inserting long stems of Zantedeschia and Oncidium on

one side of the design and shorter stems on the opposite side. Pluck Kale leaves and use

the hairpin wire technique to secure them along with the succulent leaves.

Step 4: Position Banksia coccinea for prominence and fill the empty space above

with Crucifix Orchids. Wire several Skeleton Leaves together to form a strand that will

complement the Rhipsalis trail then complete the design by accessorising with Bullion

Wire orbs and spraying with FloraLife® Finishing Touch.

Break a record this spring with the brightest bouquet in town.

Step 1. Prepare strings of wire flowers in advance

by unravelling a reel of strong pink Metallic Wire.

Loop the wire around two fingers and repeat five

times to make the 6 petals needed then secure the

loops by winding wire over them. Separate the

petals to form the flower slightly bending them

to add dimension. Make the next wire flower

leaving a short gap and repeat the process until

approximately 60-80cm length is achieved.

Step 2: Attach long trailing materials including

Buddlejah, Cardamon leaves and mauve Tulips onto

the OASIS® Grande Bent Handle and secure them

with florist wire. Define the parameter of the bouquet

by adding extra Buddlejah, Cardamon leaves,

Liriope berries, Serruria and Zantedeschias to the

desired width.

Step 3. Anchor the Ornamental Kales with florist

wire onto the top of the bouquet to form the focal

area. Surround them with Carnations, Roses and

some Dusty Miller. Fill in the gaps with transition

materials: Berzilia berries, Grevilleas, Lisianthus and

Sweet Pea. Add some standard Cymbidiums and

Queen Anne’s Lace.

Step 4: Attach Liriope grasses and Trailing Vinca

to create negative space in the bouquet. Embellish

bouquet with string of Metallic Wire flowers and

anchor them by winding the end of the strand onto

existing flower stems. Spray FloraLife® Finishing

Touch all over the bouquet to seal the freshness and

decrease rate of transpiration.

Tribute to a

Right: “I love Van Gogh’s subject matter

including fields of flowers, Irises, Wheat,

Sunflowers, Cyprus and Olive trees.

My design was a combination of these elements from four of his

paintings. He was the first to capture the energetic movement of

life forces in the plants and sky rather than static physical forms,”

explained Meredith Lucia.

She massed contrasting bright colours to make her design more eye-catching.

Left: Maryam Dilati was

inspired by Diego Rivera’s

painting The Flower Carrier.

It shows a man struggling

on all fours to carry a

dramatically oversized

basket of flowers on his

back. Despite the beauty of

his load the man only sees

their sale value as he carries them to market.

“I have always been fascinated with Rivera’s

paintings. He was a prominent Mexican

painter who helped establish the Mexican

Mural Movement. This particular painting

was masterfully created in 1935 and imparts

simplicity yet exudes much symbolism and

meaning which drew me as I feel this reflects

my style, in many ways. I like to create simple

pretty things that tell stories,” said Maryam.

“Floristry offers diversity from the choice of

flowers to how you use them to express your

creativity. It is one of those rare careers with

many opportunities and paths which involve

nothing but beauty.”

Above: Michael Cordeiro appeared with the Flora Kulchas troupe when they

ran workshops for children at the Royal Sydney Show. He has also competed

in the Designz® Cup several times winning the National Award in 2010.

DESIGNZ® CUP 2016 NEW SOUTH WALES

9

A similar theme was explored several years ago but this time Smithers-Oasis

Australia supplied a key component for the competition while David Berger and

Alan Randell-Smith judged the following results:

1st Prize Erin Bryce Ryde Campus, Northern Sydney Institute

2nd Prize Maryam Dilati Padstow College, South Western Sydney Institute

3rd Prize Meredith Lucia Ryde Campus, Northern Sydney Institute

Erin Bryce really enjoys working with native Australian flowers.

She selected the iconic Australian painter Sidney

Nolan known for his Ned Kelly series and in

particular the 1946 painting featuring Ned.

“He shows the Australian bush landscape

in a beautiful simple way and described

the Kelly saga as ‘a story arising out of

the bush and ending in the bush’. An

idea evident throughout

his work and I love the

way he captures and

depicts the Australian

landscape along with

aspects of our country’s

history,” said Erin.

She used Grevillea

flowers and foliage, a

wide range of Banksias,

some burnt Banksia

cones and white King

Proteas to decorate the

pre-soaked 61cm OASIS®

FOAM FRAMES® Ring supplied

to all entrants. Erin also included

a mix of different Eucalypts, Gumnuts,

Gymea leaves, Kangaroo Paw, Goanna Claw

and Woody Pear. OASIS® products like Bricks,

Florettes and Reel Wire enabled her to complete

the design.

“I opted for an asymmetrical design with a large,

full spray of flowers to the bottom right flowing

upwards. This contrasted with the bound bark

on the remainder of the wreath. It was visibly

wrapped and secured with black wire reflecting

ideas of Ned Kelly.”

Erin had no hesitation in describing why

she enjoys floristry. “Quite simply, I get

to play with flowers and call it work.

There’s so much beauty, variety

and creativity to explore.

As florists we get to

be part of so many

different stages of people’s

lives, bringing flowers to many different

occasions.”

Painters with passion were portrayed by Designz® Cup entrants at

the Royal Sydney Show.

More tributes toLeft: The opulence and sensuality of paintings like Acqua

Mossa by Gustav Klimt inspired Darian Burke. He created

voluminous hair for his mannequin using masses of Dodda Vine

and generous trails of Ivy, Jasmine and Wattle.

He added a headpiece of Sunflowers and Cymbidium Orchids

to reflect Klimt’s preference for gold using OASIS® products

to keep it secure. Darian filled his Designer Ring with Roses,

Sunflowers, Vanda and Cymbidium Orchids along with touches

of Lisianthus in peach and golden tones.

“I grew up running around the Brisbane Flower Markets but didn’t develop an

appreciation for flowers until I started working there and saw the power that flowers

can have over people’s emotions.”

Below right: “My chosen artist was Cy Twombly. Having been a fan of his art in

recent years I decided to recreate one of his untitled paintings in floral form to pay

tribute to him,” said Georgia de Percy.

Georgia cut her 61cm OASIS® FOAM FRAMES® Ring in half to create a u-shaped

design then covered it with Moss. She added Magnolia leaves, Freesias, Roses,

Orchids and Pepper Berries.

“My favourite thing

about floristry is

the variety of the

work each day.

The number of

ways that one or

many things can

be manipulated

and combined is

astounding and

incredibly fun.”

Right: Michelle Speck

admires the Broken Hill

artist Pro Hart. “He

captured the essence

of Australia with

his paintings of the

outback and those of

wild flowers. I wanted

to pay tribute to him by

only using flowers and

foliage that are native

to Australia such as

the Kangaroo Paw,

Banksias and

Wattle etc.”

She chose an old tree

stump as her base

and surrounded it with

red dirt to emulate the

outback that Pro so

often painted.

DESIGNZ® CUP 2016

QUEENSLAND

Brisbane turned on brilliant sunshine for the

second leg of this year’s Designz® Cup.

Vibrant designs paid homage to many artists and the OASIS® FOAM

FRAMES® Ring featured in all of them. Never appearing the same twice

it offered entrants endless possibilities and Alan Randell-Smith was

accompanied by John Jones when he judged the following results:

1st Prize Melanie Carter Grovely Campus,

TAFE Queensland Brisbane

2nd Prize Darian Burke Grovely Campus,

TAFE Queensland Brisbane

3rd Prize Georgia de Percy Grovely Campus,

TAFE Queensland Brisbane

Highly Michelle Speck Grovely Campus,

Commended TAFE Queensland Brisbane

Melanie Carter told us that she loves the use of colour and the way

light is depicted in paintings by the modern impressionist Leonid

Afremov. Her design was inspired by his painting entitled Paris of

my Dreams – Cityscape.

“He uses bright strong colours with his unique palette knife

technique bringing wonderful scenery to life. This particular

painting makes me feel like I am in Paris again, bringing back

fond travel memories!”

Iris, Tulips, Gladioli, Asters, Gerberas, Carnations, Ivy berries,

Waxflower buds, Sweet William, Chrysanthemums, Moss, Mock

Orange, Gardenia foliage and Trailing Ivy enabled Melanie to

achieve the desired effect. She created a bamboo frame to

simulate the Eiffel Tower then covered it with Gladioli and Iris to

draw the eyes over the entire design.

Rhythm was created by inserting bright colours into the

compulsory 61cm OASIS® FOAM FRAMES® Ring while Tulips

bent into arches made the design more eye-catching.

“I love being

creative, working

with beautiful

flowers and

being able to

bring great joy

to others!”

said Melanie.

A tribute that captures the personality of a

loved one leaves a lasting impression.

Losing someone close is always difficult but weaving the threads of

their life story into an unforgettable design allows many treasured

memories to be processed. It also demonstrates their uniqueness.

Soft tones of cream Sweetpeas and Zantedeschias interplay with

mauve Carnations, Lavender, Statice and Stock in this poignant

tribute. It has been accented with Ornamental Kale and shows

respect to the departed without going overboard.

Centrally located Proteas symbolise a strong earthly

connection while Zantedeschias float upwards in a

heavenly direction. Gently swaying Cymbopogon

draws attention even further away to a place of

peace and reflection.

Copper has been considered a healing metal

for centuries so this colour has been

chosen for the Bullion Wire

shapes that complete

the design.

When words are insufficient a carefully composed design gives great comfort.

Thinking of You

Step 1: Base a saturated OASIS® Dekorette Brick with Philodendron and Sea Star Fern

then insert a tight trio of Proteas to create a strong focal area. Frame them by inserting

Zantedeschias at both ends of the design.

Step 2: Extend the width of the arrangement by adding a skirt of Buddleja and additional

Philodendron leaves. Unravel the spool of Bullion Wire and roll into teardrop shapes

before anchoring them with florist wire underneath the Proteas.

Step 3: Add Cymbidium Orchids and Scottish Thistle for contrast and texture. Establish
