fresh talkWelcome to another issue of fresh. It’s been a while since we last connected so we hope that you had a happy festive season and wish all our readers health plus safety throughout 2018.
This is the time of the year we bring you something for Mother’s Day so turn to pages 10-13 for a couple of designs inspired by the tropics. They conjure up holiday destinations where the floral components are frequently seen in gardens, hotels and restaurants.
The bouquets were created in Surabaya, Indonesia, by our Smithers-Oasis team so have a distinct South East Asian flavour but they could work equally well in an Aussie city or rural location.
Last year’s Designz® Cup theme encouraged students to celebrate the vibrancy of the race-track so it was only natural that the overall winning design on page 14 was loaded with colour. All entrants used the compulsory pre-soaked OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Garland along with an OASIS® Dekorette Single Brick to create something unique. Fortunately our photographers always give us lasting memories of these one-off designs that entrants have spent many hours preparing for.
This year we head in a different direction with Moments in Time. We hope our entrants will enjoy bringing a historical period to life using flowers and foliage – there are so many to pick from. Once again they will receive two different compulsory pre-soaked OASIS® products prior to the event along with a complimentary OASIS® Gift Pack composed of the following:
1 x Green Reel Wire 1 x OASIS® Floral Adhesive 1 x OASIS® Foliage Remover 1 x OASIS® Heavy Duty Scissors
Entrants still need to supply flowers, foliage and embellishments along with a pedestal or support structure appropriate to the theme. We look forward to seeing the results and sharing them with you as the year progresses.

Vibrant parallel lines of decorative wire contrast
perfectly with delicate trails of Spanish moss.
Begin this design by twisting four pieces of Aluminium Wire together to
make 60cm strips. Wrap them with olive green Metallic Wire for contrast
followed by gold Pearls on Reel for texture. Curl strips of the decorated
wire with fingers to create coils.
Insert strips of wire into an OASIS® Lady II bouquet holder ensuring there
is a coil at the top. Add Spanish moss to establish length and allow
Amaranthus to trail alongside before filling bouquet with Hydrangea and Tulips. A Cymbidium Orchid takes
centre stage while a Dendrobium has been threaded through the wire at the
top of the design for height.

OASIS® Grande Bent Handle
Playful palms extend the boundaries of this bouquet to form a tropical halo.
The collar is made first by unrolling silver Aluminium Wire and scrunching it into a large flat circular disc before attaching to the bouquet holder with florist wire. One side of the bouquet has been filled with Hydrangeas and the other with white Roses and Tulips.
They create textural contrast to the fronds of Lady palm that sit behind them. Tillandsia takes a dominant central position while Kale sits either side harmonising with the Dusty Miller that falls from base of the bouquet.
Another Kale and Umbrella fern sit at the top of the bouquet balancing out the boundary.

Follow the steps below to create the airy frame which can be made well in advance. Incorporate Asparagus fern, Seeded Eucalyptus, Ivy and Green Bells so that they fall loosely through it.
Insert Geraldton wax, Hypericum berries, white Roses and Tulips amongst the Anthuriums that have been arranged by length. Two longer stems trail delicately below while Scabiosa stellate and wire arches complete the design.
An open frame beneath a bouquet of white Anthuriums achieves lightness and space.

Step 1: The frame comprises three segments or wedges joined together to create a dome-like structure. Begin by cutting six 120cm lengths of Rustic Grapevine Wire then fold each in half for strength.
Step 2: Wrap Pearls on Reel around each folded length going down then back up to create a criss-cross effect. Join them together in pairs with Metallic Wire to create three segments leaving 5cm above the binding point.
Step 3: Cut three 10cm pieces Rustic Grapevine Wire and another three at 14cm. Wrap Metallic Wire around the Rustic Wire like a candy cane then curl the wire using your finger to make a spiral. Attach one 10cm wire spiral between each of the three pairs using Metallic Wire.
Step 4: Bend each pair into a wedge-shape before attaching a 14cm spiral further down. Bind all three together using Pearls on Reel at the bound point of each wedge.

Translucent trails of pale coloured beads and foliage give a floaty fairy tale finish.
Jasmine flowers have been threaded onto wire before inserting into an OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Sphere. They trail in tandem with Pearls on Reel that similarly fall from a sphere that has been coated in Asparagus fern before being wrapped with Metallic Wire.
Several lengths of Aluminium Wire were twisted together and inserted into the base of the sphere to form a handle for the bride. It was strong and stable. A Phalaenopsis orchid sits at the top of the design while orchid roots trail below.
A scattering of Dusty Miller completes the ethereal effect.

Surrounding the design are five wire petals. Each petal began with 120cm of Aluminium Wire that was folded in half then twisted to form a strand and bound with Pearls on Reel. The five separate strands were bent to form identical petals.
They were inserted evenly around the bottom two thirds of the bouquet before it was filled with a profusion of Lisianthus, Roses, Geraldton wax and Tracellium in tones of mauve and pink. Large red Gerberas exploded from the harmony below while strands of Ivy delicately dived amongst the flowers.
Allow vibrant gerberas to leap out of a pastel bouquet for a racy result.

Left: “I wanted to make the racing theme obvious with my prop plus incorporate ‘Marquee Madness’ by giving the horse a bit of a fascinator,” explained Cassidy Rann.
She came second when she draped the two metre compulsory garland to form a fascinator and mane. Cassidy continued with the draping to create rhythm as well as stability
and balance. The OASIS® Dekorette brick at the bottom created another focal point and symmetry.
She filled her design with Peppercorn foliage, Mini Monstera, Umbrella Fern, Dianthus ‘Green Trick’, Anthurium Choco, and Mokara Orchids.
“I enjoy having the ability to create so many different things and be a part of such a beautiful industry.”
Right: “I was inspired by the idea of ‘madness’ which led me to use exotic colours in my design and very bright, beautiful blooms such as Delphiniums, Phalaenopsis Orchids and Roses,” said Brittany Rose Ellery who came third.
“I used the garland underneath the tiers to create a nice pathway between each design. The OASIS® Dekorette brick formed the lower section,” said Brittany.
“This competition was my first one. I had the most amazing time - it’s something to remember! Floristry makes my imagination come to life and allows me to express who I am through design. I don’t know where I’d be without it!”
Left: Tasanee Jones constructed a design that captured the important finish line and was Highly Recommended.

Marquee MadnessVibrant jockey silks, shiny thoroughbreds and a smorgasbord of race wear gave entrants plenty of creative options. These were explored at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre where a moat of floral canoes welcomed entrants and visitors alike. They also welcomed Kaye Baylis and Alan Randell-Smith who reached the following results:
1st Prize Stephanie Ho South Metropolitan TAFE
2nd Prize Cassidy Rann South Metropolitan TAFE
3rd Prize Brittany Rose Ellery South Metropolitan TAFE
Highly Tasanee Jones Commended South Metropolitan TAFE
“When I thought of the ‘Spirit of Racing’ the winner’s cup came to mind which is what trainers and jockeys strive for,” said Stephanie Ho.
The Schweppes Bar with its strong use of yellow and a fun vibe also inspired her. She used the compulsory OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Garland to decorate half of her shiny circular frame then attached brightly coloured blooms to it. Roses, Chrysanthemums, Irises, Tea Tree, Dianthus ‘Green Trick’, Leucadendron, Delphiniums, Strelitzia reginae, Solidago and Craspedia (Billy Buttons) were selected to extend the yellow theme.
“I chose three prominent Bird of Paradise stems to represent the horses coming first, second and third. The blue Delphiniums became a backdrop of winning colour and connected with the first prize ribbon,” explained Stephanie.
Rhaphidophora tetrasperma (Mini Monstera), Ruscus, Umbrella, Leather and Asparagus Ferns created lush foliage for contrast. She used the compulsory OASIS® Dekorette Single Brick to create an asymmetric floral arrangement in the bottom right corner of the design.
“I enjoy working with the beauty of nature. Being able to share that beauty with others by using all the colours and textures that nature creates, gives me so much joy.”
Magical Mandurah provided the perfect finish for a year of designs inspired by horse racing.

The Solanum mammosum may not be edible but it looks like it should be. Bright and bouncy pumpkin coloured Nipple
Fruit remain attached to the vines that were draped around this design.
Underneath sits an OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Sphere that has been coated with Asparagus Fern then placed in a bowl shaped container. Tropical leaves and a centrally
located Delphinium between a pair of Phalaenopsis Orchids emerge through the vines.
Several stems of Seeded Eucalyptus have been inserted for balance at the edge of the container
while strands of Asparagus Fern float above.

Give someone special an exotic getaway without the airfare.
Stalks of bamboo have been carefully bent and arranged to create space for contemplation in this design. They surround an OASIS® Floral Foam Netted Sphere that has been coated with Rosemary before being wrapped with Aluminium and Bullion wires for extra strength.
An entire Phalaenopsis orchid plant straddles the top of the sphere. It’s pink for Mother’s Day with trailing roots. They create a curvy contrast to the horizontal placement of Bamboo and Ivy.
Orchid roots lead to Hydrangea at the base of the design.

Stephanie Ho from South Metropolitan TAFE in Perth appeared in the middle pages and here she is again. This time it’s for gaining the highest score across all states for her Marquee Madness design.
Her design integrated many elements found at a horse racing carnival. She filled her compulsory two metre OASIS® Netted Floral Foam Garland with vibrant colours after draping it around a winning post.
Three stems of Strelitzia stand proudly above the winner’s cup in first, second and third position. Delphiniums matched the vibrant blue of a First Prize Ribbon and a bottle of champagne joined the celebration.
Flowers of yellow, purple, crimson, white, blue and orange were repeated in the compulsory OASIS® Dekorette single brick at the base of the design. Colours worn by jockeys worldwide.
All entrants are congratulated on entering an event that couldn’t exist without them or their tutors who are so supportive. Alan Randell-Smith has again traversed the country judging the Designz® Cup and is thanked profusely as are his assistants who are similarly generous with their time.
