fresh talk
Spring has sprung so it’s time for another issue of fresh. We hope that floristry is
still giving you pleasure and that you enjoy our latest instalment of inspirational
designs.
With Christmas coming up far too quickly it’s time to feature some festive
designs. On the adjacent page we have a delicious Christmas tree and a big
surprise on the following two pages. Hopefully all the designs in this issue will
push your creative buttons and the first of our designers is Michael Cordeiro.
He regularly thinks outside the square so his
work is constantly evolving. Michael studied
floristry at Ultimo College, Sydney Institute of
TAFE and Padstow College of TAFE but now
enjoys freelancing. Our readers may recall that
Michael won the NSW leg of the Designz® Cup
in 2010 before taking out the National Award
that same year.
The legend of Medusa was explored in his
Greek wedding design along with many other
cultural traditions. Other entrants chose
different countries and the standard was very
high around Australia.
Michael has used a large range of OASIS® products on these pages and
demonstrates their enormous versatility in unexpected ways. Some design
components could be assembled in advance so they’re ready for pulling
together on that special day. All Michael’s designs were photographed by Craig
Peihopa at www.timelinephoto.com
Our other designer is
Kathleen Horton. She
was our National Award
winner in 2016 and studied
floristry at the Marjorie
Milner College. Her
Tribute to a Painter design
included circles covered
with vibrant wool that
took hours to create. They
captured Kandinsky’s 1923
painting entitled Circles in
a Circle brilliantly and we
hope you enjoy both her
sympathy designs.
Finally we introduce our
winners from the first leg
of this year’s Designz®
Cup. Our Moments in
Time theme encourages
entrants to explore periods in history so there are numerous options to select
from. More results will appear in our next issue along with the announcement of
our 2018 National Award so good luck to all state winners.
Happy Reading!

Tantalise guests with
a tree that looks good
enough to eat.
A traditional Christmas
tree becomes delectable
when placed on an OASIS®
NAYLORBASE® Ring coated in
ribbon to resemble a cake. An
elegant colour scheme of silver
and white enables it to take
centre stage in the dining room.
Or to snuggle amongst food
and sweets on a buffet table.

of silver glitter ribbon using
Diamante Pins to keep it secure.
Place the ring on a cake stand.
Step 2. Wet an OASIS® Netted
Cone slightly before wrapping
with Reindeer Moss and
decorative wires including
Pearls on Reel. Spray Eryngium
and Blushing Bride white using
Design Master® Colortool®.
Step 3. Attach floral materials

Step 1. Split five pool noodles
lengthwise down the centre
using a saw.
Step 2. Shape each noodle
into a U-shape. Use wooden
skewers to attach the middle to
an OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Ring
with the smooth edge facing
out. Repeat this process with
all noodles to create a basic
five star shape. Bind all edges
with Bindwire to strengthen the
structure and cover each arm
with light organza material. Wrap
Bullion wire around material.
Step 3. Shape OASIS® SEC
Floral Foam Bricks into a dome
and secure it to the OASIS®
NAYLORBASE® Ring using
Aluminium Wire. Attach extra
pool noodles to the top ridge of
each arm and cover them with
Croton leaves using double-
sided Tape. Bind leaves with
more Bullion Wire for extra
security.
Glue and skewer Sunflowers
to the dome using OASIS®
Floral Adhesive. Place a
succulent in the centre then
glue Chrysanthemums around
the boundaries of the arms.
Decorate the starfish with
Asters and Dahlias leaving
some to scatter into the
surrounding water.

frivolity and fun.
Pool noodles assist with buoyancy
in this aquatic star that captures
the tradition of Christmas. Other
ingredients maintain lightness and
enhance the design. The use of OASIS®
SEC Floral Foam Bricks in the central
dome prevents it from becoming
waterlogged. It sits strong and sturdy
on an OASIS® NAYLORBASE® Ring.
The same components could be
manipulated into other stunning sea
creatures. Follow our instructions to
master this technique.

Step 1. Attach aluminium rods
to a Topiary Stand creating the
shape of a martini glass. Insert
steel circles into the structure
to create strength and stability
using cable ties. Place wooden
sticks to support more steel
circles inside the structure.
Step 2. Attach two LED lights
one facing up and one
down in the base of
the glass vase. Place
vase into the stand
and fill with pink water
beads. Attach two
more LED lights above
the vase one facing up
and one down using
a cross piece to hold
them. Cover the two
top circles in pink
glitter ribbon to create
a sugary effect then
attach the Gypsophila
using double-sided
tape.
Step 3. Cover the stem
of the stand with silver
organza ribbon. Attach
test tubes onto the
inner and outer rings
using silver Bullion Wire
then fill them with red
coloured water. Insert
stems of Leucadendron
into tubes and Led
Lights can be turned on
for illumination.
Step 4. Create the heart
shaped base by filling
small bottles with red
coloured water. Place
them at the base of
the stand in a heart
shape. Insert a selection
of Leucadrendrons,
Gomphrena and red
Orchids into some of
the bottles.
Step 5. Carve a heart
out of OASIS® SEC
Floral Foam Bricks
then cover it with red
ribbon before attaching
Orchids using OASIS®

heart with a wooden
skewer and attach to
the top of Topiary Stand

A shaker on the table indicates the scale of this large design making
it suitable for a restaurant or hotel foyer that enjoys promoting the
day of cupids and love. This floral martini definitely needs some
space so it could also work in a florist’s window.
Exploring the event with flowers other than Roses opens
up refreshing possibilities. Leucadendrons have been cleverly
linked to a traditional red heart at the top of the design and a less
traditional heart at the base.
Create romance in a glass with the perfect
Valentine’s Day cocktail.

Left: The story of Noah’s Ark
inspired Hilal Cevikoglu who
came second in the NSW
Designz® Cup.
“I had a childhood connection
with the design as my mother
used to read me the book. I
remember the beautiful colours
and animals that took me back
to that period.”
Singapore, Vanda, Cymbidium
and Dendrobium Orchids
along with Dancing Ladies
were embraced by Cordyline,
Monstera and Aspidistra
leaves. All were supported by
the compulsory OASIS® Ideal
Floral Foam Bricks and Petite
Florettes.
She combined sticks to create
a boat using the tatami method.
“Love what I do and every day
is different!” said Hilal.
Left: Left to right: Megen Graham, Tammy Chen, Hilal Cevikoglu,
Sherry Tan, Yuka Konno and Eunhong Kim. Missing: Venus Ng.
Right: “In 1974 Dr Bowler discovered
Mungo Man and for one moment in
time ancient and modern man, the
past and the present, were as one,”
said Eunhong Kim.
Her depiction of this moment came third.
“I used the red of the Protea to express how Uluru is sacred to the
Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. The Leucadendron and
Grevillea represent the impact that erosion has had on Mungo National Park by
the sculpting of the sand and clay into fragile yet imposing formations.”
“The two small gumnut arrangements represent Mungo Man and Lady with
their connection to Lake Mungo. Although small in size they complete the
work. The arrangement is predominantly black, red and yellow - the colours of
the Australian Aboriginal Flag.”

Many significant moments in history
were captured by Designz®
Cup entrants at the Show.
Everything from
the Meiji era in
Japan to the French
Enlightenment challenged
Alan Randell-Smith and
Janine Batley to reach the
following results:
1st Prize
Jiemin (Sherry) Tan
Ultimo Campus, Sydney TAFE
2nd Prize
Hilal Cevikoglu

3rd Prize

Ryde Campus, Northern Sydney Institute
Jiemin Tan is known as Sherry and says
she will never forget the 911 event in 2001.
“Two buildings destroyed in the most
heartbreaking of circumstances. Whilst
the years have passed I still honour them
by remembering and know that the
rebuilding of the city, and our hearts, is
the path to forgiveness and healing.”
Sherry carefully constructed the twin towers from
wire and the exposed frames emerged like skeletons from
the rubble below. She threaded crystal beads and hung
them inside to represent broken glass as well as the fallen
innocent lives.
One of her compulsory OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam Bricks was
attached inside the higher tower while the first compulsory
OASIS® Petite Florette was attached at the back. The other
florette was placed inside the shorter tower with the second
brick used for an impression of smoke and exploding debris
at the base.
Flowers were arranged by colour to portray elements of 911.
Autumn hydrangeas in dark purple, burgundy, green and
blue gave an impression of ash and broken concrete.
The heat and flames of the fire may be
found in Dancing Ladies, Hypericum,
hot pink Roses, red Celosia and
red Amaranthus.
Purple and blue Delphiniums
emerged from Queen Anne Lace
and the darkness of Burgundy
carnations. They gave a bright
promise of hope for new life
and regeneration.
Beauty arose from the ashes at the
Sydney Royal Easter Show.

NEW SOUTH WALES
“We are the ones who
create the moment for
others which takes time
and effort but it’s all
worthwhile. Sometimes
it’s very challenging
however eventually
it becomes a valuable
experience,”
said Sherry.

Topiary Stand
Surround succulents, carnations and kale
with a heart large enough to leave a lasting
impression.
Hidden inside is a sneaky Topiary Stand which comes in two sizes.
Either size is strong and sturdy enough to support a wire sculpture
that could be shaped and joined to suit a particular occasion. This
time our designer has constructed a heart for Valentine’s Day.
He has placed it on a base of pebbles that reflect the curves in the
shape above for a double dose of love.

Inject lightness and brightness into a sad occasion with a
splash of illuminating white.
This arrangement is suitable for anyone who has recently lost a loved one and diverges
from the traditional wreath or sheath design. Whites and greens have been grouped to
create a modern approach.
Begin by wrapping Happy Plant leaves around a saturated OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam Brick
that has been trimmed to fit into a squat cylinder vase. The glass will enable the horizontal
pattern of the leaves to be viewed beneath the contrasting flowers above.
Next lie a strip of bark across the container before inserting Umbrella Fern followed by the
Roses and Chrysanthemums. Delicate stems of Queen Anne’s Lace will give height to the
design while keeping it open and airy.

TropicalFarewell
Lush ferns and
leaves give an aura
of tranquility to
the casket of a
loved one.
This design has a cooling
and calming effect in a
hot climate making it
suitable for many local
locations. Anthuriums
appear like overlapping
hearts at the front of the
design. They give movement
and invite a closer look at
more decorative details like
the rolled leaves.
An artistic, creative and
modern personality could
have been the inspiration
for this creation. Follow
the instructions below to
achieve a similar result.
Floralife® Finishing Touch
OASIS® Dekorette Double Brick
Step 2. Insert Umbrella Fern
as well as more Leather Fern
to continue the mirroring
effect plus increase depth
and volume throughout the
design. Working from the
bottom up will ensure that
the height of upright stems
remains greater towards the
centre of the design.
Step 3. Roll some leaves and insert them to establish
points of interest. Use Banana, Cordyline and Happy
Plant leaves as well as Leather and Umbrella ferns to form
multiple planned lines. View the design regularly to ensure
that the leaves are reducing in height from a central focus.
Place an Anthurium into the centre of the front of the
design then overlap several more to form an asymmetrical,
undulating line. Complete the design with a spray of
Floralife® Finishing Touch to keep it looking fresh.
