What is ISOBUS?
• Standardized communication protocol for the agriculture industry
• Standardized communication between devices of different manufacturers (tractors and implements)
• Ensures compatibility of data transfer between mobile systems and office software used on farms
• Based on CAN bus and SAE J1939 protocol
• ISOBUS trademark is owned by the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF)

ISOBUS Benefits
1. Easier installation (standardized cables, connectors)
2. Easier operation, only one terminal
3. Lower costs

ISOBUS System
• Various components : tractor, terminal and implement
8.12.20167
![Page 8: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Virtual Terminal (VT)
• Graphical display in the tractor cabin
• Controls different ISOBUS compliant implements fromseveral manufacturers
• User interface and application logic are stored in the implement ECU
• During start-up, the application is loaded to the VT via CAN bus

![Page 9: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Communication Example, VT-Implement

I am a VT
I am a seeder, what kind of terminal are you?
I speak english and have 10 physical keys, 400x400 px data mask area..
OK, here is my user interface
Operator input (e.g. left marker down)
Implement action (left marker down)
![Page 10: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Tractor ECU (TECU)
• The gateway between the tractor (J1939) and the implement bus (ISOBUS)
• Shares information to the implement
• Provides limited controls enabling coordination between implement and tractor
• Supported Tractor ECU functions are determined by TECU Class according to ISO 11783 (Class 1 3)
8.12.201610
![Page 11: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Tractor ECU (TECU)
• TECU shares information to the implement, for example,
• Speed (wheel, ground, engine)
• Machine distance and direction
• Hitch position (rear/front)
• Power take-off (PTO) RPM
• Lighting command
• The implement shares information to TECU, for example,
• Lighting status
• Implement state

Tractor ECU (TECU)
•
functions (class 3)
• Power take-off on/off, shaft speed
• Rear hitch position command
• Auxiliary valve commands (Epec support)

![Page 13: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Task Controller (TC)
• The Task Controller is a software running normally on the Virtual Terminal in the tractor cabin
• Two main functions:
1. Give control commands to the implement ECU according to work plans
2. Data logging of performed tasks to be used later by farm management information system (FMIS)
• Task Controller functionality types:
• TC-BAS, TC-GEO, TC-SC
13 8.12.2016
![Page 14: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Task Controller (TC)
• TC-BAS : Task Controller Basic
• Manages the documentation of total values (from the implement)
• The data is exchanged between the Farm Management Information system (FMIS) and the Task Controller in ISO XML data format
• TC-GEO : Task Controller Geo-Based
• Offers the additional option to collect location-specific data or to plan location-specific tasks, perhaps using application maps
14 8.12.2016
![Page 15: ISOBUS Introduction](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021416/58a7bf031a28ab6b5a8b4665/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Task Controller (TC)
• TC-SC : Task Controller Section Control
• Handles the automatic switching of partial widths depending on GPS position and the desired degree of overlap
- For example, for sprayers, spreaders and planters
• Can deliver higher yields while saving 5 to 10% of material inputs
15 8.12.2016

Auxiliary Control (AUX-N / AUX-O)
• An additional control element, such as a joystick, for easier controlling of implement functions
• Connected directly to the implement bus (ISOBUS)
• - -N) auxiliary controls
• Not compatible : Implements and functions certified according to AUX-N cannot be operated with input devices certified according to AUX-O and vice versa
• (Auxiliary Control is currently not supported by Epec ISOBUS libraries)
