South Pacifi c National Tourist Offi ces

The times have changedThirteen years ago, Renae Pocklington had the vision to create a trade publication dedicated to South Pacifi c travel. Since then Islandtime has proven to be a great way for retail agents, wholesalers and the travel trade to keep up-to-date with all that’s happening in this wonderful part of the world.

As the new publishers of Islandtime, you can be rest assured that Fran and I will stay true to magazine’s original purpose and we’ll also be looking for new ways to inspire our readers.

In this edition we feature two great destinations. First we take a look at the magical islands of Vanuatu after my exciting and interesting visit to Tok Tok, and we also fall in love in the Cook Islands. You will also notice that each island has a dedicated section where you’ll fi nd updates, promotions and local news.

Islandtime is all about giving you the best information possible so your feedback is valuable. If there’s anything you’d like to see in the publication, simply email your suggestions to [email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you and bringing you the best of the South Pacifi c.

Launch of the Vessel of LovePacifi c Resort Rarotonga recently launched their new Wedding Vaka affectionately named “Vaka O Te Inangaro” – Vessel of Love with a traditional ceremony on Muri Beach. The Vaka was traditionally designed and carved by Pacifi c Resort staff member Pokoina Pokoina (Poko). Poko’s Vaka building knowledge and craftsmanship was passed on from his Maukean father and this is the second Vaka that Poko has constructed for Pacifi c Resort Rarotonga.

“Vaka O Te Inangaro” will be used for wedding packages at Pacifi c Resort Rarotonga, replacing our fi rst Vaka, ‘Vaka O Te Vaine Teatea’, which will be retired back to where she was created as a static garden display. Pacifi c Resort Rarotonga is located on one of the world’s most spellbinding locations, it’s a very magical place for weddings, with over 40 weddings booked so far for this year. Pacifi c Resort Rarotonga offers a range of wedding packages including a traditional Vaka lagoon ride with a warrior to Koromirii Motu, their uninhabited island. They currently have a wedding package special that includes a free wedding ceremony when staying at the resort for 7 nights in a gorgeous Beachfront Suite.

Te Tika Mataiapo – Dorice Reid20 June 1943 – 17 June 2011In June of this year the Cook Islands lost Te Tika Mataiapo - Dorice Reid, one of the country’s truly great leaders. While it would take a book to tell her life story and describe her signifi cant deeds, the following words by Tata Crocombe illustrate the passion Dorice had for the Cook Islands and its people.

“Te Tika loved life passionately and lived it to the full always giving 100% to every one of the many roles she played across the breadth of Cook Islands society. There were no half measures or holding back. She was the fi rst to arrive at every meeting and would volunteer to take on the tough jobs that needed doing. She was there to help take the Cook Islands forward not for any complicated personal or political agendas. She was sincere, loyal and trust worthy as well as completely fearless…

…Te Tika was deeply devoted to the tireless and enthusiastic service of other Cook Islanders in whatever way she could assist. She stood aside from politics so that she could work with everyone for the common good. She was selfl ess, perhaps too selfl ess for her own good, and kept up a phenomenally busy schedule of positive and constructive good works with dignity, enthusiasm and good humour right to the very end.

Te Tika Mataiapo Dorice Reid was truly one of a kind.”

The real FijiWith its lush green tropical rainforests and abundant fauna, it is no wonder Taveuni is called the ‘Garden Island’. However, it wasn’t always so serene. Sitting 6.5 km off the East Coast of Vanua Levu, Taveuni (Fiji’s third biggest island), is actually the remains of a massive volcano that rose from the sea fl oor. In fact eruptions and lava fl ows were still part of life up until the mid 1500’s. Thankfully things have settled down on Taveuni, but the remnants of this volcanic activity now form some of the island’s most popular attractions.

Lake Tagimaucia is one of the islands most famous landmarks. Sitting 832 metres above sea level, this spectacular crater lake (now extinct) is fi lled with masses of fl oating vegetation. The Lake is also home to the rare tagimaucia fl ower which blossoms with a red and white centre. Visitors have two ways to view the Lake, hiking up by foot (which is an all day affair) or they can take a 4WD vehicle and see the lake from a distance. A visit to Bouma Falls is also a must. The area is surrounded by colourful fl ora and the huge natural rock pool under the waterfall is top spot for a swim.

For beauty of a different kind, visitors can’t go past Taveuni Island Resort and Spa. Consistently voted one Fiji’s best resorts, this exclusive boutique property is owned by 30 year locals, Ric and Do Cammick who are well-known for discovering the world famous Rainbow Reef and a host of other dive spots.

Their fi rst visit to the island was actually on their honeymoon in the mid 1970’s. A few years later they opened a dive operation that was one of the fi rst tourism ventures on Taveuni and the rest they say is history. While Ric doesn’t spend so much time underwater these days, managing this outstanding resort is more than enough to keep himself and Do busy. “Taveuni is the real Fiji,” says Do, “and the lovely thing is that it has never changed.”

Taveuni is more than just a word, it is the Jewel of the South Pacifi c.

Niue

Whale season has begun in Niue with the fi rst sightings of migrating humpback whales in

Niue occurring in recent months. Niue is on a humpback whale migratory path meaning

each year the island is blessed with these gentle giants who arrive in Niue’s waters to calve

and nurse their young. Since the initial sighting, many more whales have arrived and tour

operators have started to take visitors out to swim with them.

Niue Island is one of the only places in the world where visitors can swim with these majestic

animals. It is frequently described as a once in a lifetime experience. This amazing experience

was rated as the number one activity in the South Pacifi c by Lonely Planet writer Brett

Atkinson after his up close snorkeling encounter in Niue with a whale and her calf.

Because Niue is an atoll, its deep waters mean visitors don’t have to head out to sea to see

these gentle giants – they swim within 50 meters of the shore providing a spectacular show.

Guests at Niue’s Matavai resort are often treated to the spectacle of whale gymnastics while

they enjoy dinner on the resort deck.

At night, the whales are so close to the shore their calls have been known to keep people

awake. The whales are one of the major attractions for boaties as they are often right in the

mooring fi eld. Boaties are treated to amazing sights such as mothers basking on the surface

with their calves and can drift off to sleep listening to the whales sing to each other in the bay.

Swimming with GiantsThe humpback whales return to Niue

Experience the adventu re!

Record numbers for NiueA concentrated promotion by wholesale partners has led a record number of visitors fl ying into Niue over recent months. This busy period is also set to continue with forward bookings in October and November looking very strong. This is particularly good news for the small Pacifi c nation, as November is traditionally considered an off-peak period of travel. Local accommodation providers have also confi rmed the boost in arrivals by reporting a signifi cant rise in occupancy rates.

Visitor Centre open for businessThe Niue Visitor Centre was offi cially opened in August by Niue Premier, Toke Talagi, and New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully. The Centre will provide visitors with local advice about what to see, where to eat, and anything else they may need for a memorable Niue experience!

Effective immediately BOTH our WED and SAT flights operate at convenient middle day timings allowing for domestic connections from all NZ destinations both

northbound and southbound. AKL, arrives at 1100, departs for VLI at 1200.

Remember your Vanuatu experience begins the moment you step aboard our Boeing 737-800 and encounter our friendly crew and

fine service with FREE drinks and FREE meals.

It’s a fact, Vanuatu is one of the South Pacifi c’s most under-rated destinations, but while the tourism message is getting out to Kiwi travellers, this wonderful country has the potential to capture many more visitors.

One of the great things about Vanuatu is that it caters to everyone. Visitors who prefer to surround themselves with fi ve star luxury have a number of international resorts to choose from. The service they enjoy is fantastic, the facilities are fi rst-class and the food is a delight. If laid-back luxury is more to their liking, visitors have the choice of some fi rst-class boutique offerings, a number of these setting the standard for Vanuatu tourism.

People fl ying to Vanuatu on business are also well catered for, with hotels big and small, providing conference facilities and well-located accommodation options. When it comes to families, the options are also endless. Kids clubs, baby-sitting services, big pools and a huge array of activities await the children and guarantee a relaxed holiday for Mum and Dad. Likewise, the lower end of the market also provides a wide variety of choice for the budget conscious, with some of this accommodation located in the most beautiful parts of Vanuatu.

Like Vanuatu’s accommodation options, the range of tours and activities is also endless. One day you could swimming under a waterfall, the next day you could be face-to-face with a live volcano and the next day you could be scuba diving through the wreck of a sunken World War II vessel. While most visitors tend to stay in or around Port Vila (on the island of Efate) it pays to remember that Vanuatu is in fact made up of 82 islands of varying sizes. Some of these are a must-see and certainly worth the effort to visit, just like Vanuatu itself.

Enjoy life the island way Step off the plane and the stress levels immediately evaporate. Welcome to island life - it has its own pace and the people have their own way of doing things, and the sooner you go with it the better.

Yes, it’s very different from New Zealand, but that’s the charm of Vanuatu and it’s this authentic experience that visitors love and come back for over and over again. In fact, some come to Vanuatu and stay for good (it’s not hard to bump into an ex-pat Kiwi who’s fallen in love with the place).

A change for the betterAs already mentioned, Vanuatu has something for everyone. For those wanting the large resort experience, there are some great options to choose from and a number of these properties have had major work done during 2011. The Holiday Inn is the perfect example of a major resort that’s breathing new life into its property.

While its had an assortment of different names over the years (most recently Palms Resort and Casino and before that Le Meridien), Holiday Inn has undergone a serious transformation. An impressive $NZ18.9 million has been spent on everything from a new kids pool complete

with giant cascading water buckets, to a new expanded kids club area, to the top-to-bottom refurbishment of rooms, to a refurbished conference centre that caters for up 180 delegates. The fabulous lobby has also been upgraded, along with a brand new pool bar and a lagoon side gym.

With the Seaside Wing accommodation now complete, renovations of the hotel’s Banyan Wing rooms are due to open late September, plus there are future plans for a dedicated teens area and a renovation of the suspension walk bridge that links the over water bungalows to the main resort. So far the feedback from the travel trade and guests has been fantastic and it seems like all the hard work is paying off.

Another one of the big properties making changes is the iconic Iririki Resort and Spa, which has widened its focus on the couples and honeymoon market to include families. ‘We really have made the resort more family friendly. We’ve set up a completely new kids club area and we have a new program full of activities like arts and crafts, sandcastle making, nature walks, outdoor games and we even have a bouncy castle’ says Marketing Manager, Jodie Ryan. Iririki also provides child minding and babysitting services for kids aged 0-3 years, which is fantastic for parents that want to take the ferry into town for a meal.

For those wanting a location that’s right in the heart of town, Iririki’s sister resort The Grand is the ideal spot, being a short walk to everything in downtown Port Vila. For those who like a fl utter, The Grand also has its own casino with blackjack, roulette and baccarat tables, and a host of poker machines.

Exploring the great outdoorsWhile there’s a whole lot to see and do around Port Vila, every traveller should have a taste of the natural beauty outside the main centre. A trip to the Mele Cascades is a must-do and local operators like Evergreen Tours can pick you up from your hotel foyer and whisk you off to this natural wonderland in air-conditioned comfort. After a scenic 15 minute drive you’ll be greeted by a series of cool water pools, bubbling cascades and the impressive 50 metre high upper waterfall. Packing the togs is essential as it’s a great place for a refreshing dip. More adventurous travellers can even take an abseiling course down the cascades with tour company Edge Adventures, although the two 25 metre drops are not for the faint hearted!

In complete contrast to the lush green of Mele, is the stark volcanic landscape of Mount Yasur on Tanna Island. A number of companies, such as Enkahi Discovery Tours, run day trips from Port Vila, which include an early morning pick-up for the hour long fl ight to the island. Sam Nasse is the friendly face of Enkahi and he’s an expert guide when it comes to seeing Tanna.

While the spectacular fi reworks display of Mount Yasur is an obvious highlight, he also makes a point of giving tourists a unique cultural experience. ‘My visitors get to see local women cooking vegetables in one of the island’s natural hot springs and we visit The Secret Garden at Iafofa Village which is considered a ‘cultural bank’ in Tanna’ says Sam. To top it off, Sam treats each tour group to a traditional Tanna feast full of fresh seafood - and if you ask him nicely he may even get a crayfi sh for the grand price of $NZ10! Now that’s the sort of eating that any Kiwi will love.

Time for rest and relaxationAfter day of adventure, a day of relaxation might be in order and back in Port Vila, Eden Beauty Spa is the perfect spot. Owner and therapist, Meryl Yocogan is a master masseuse and has a host of loyal customers who pay her a visit every time they come to Vanuatu. While her therapeutic massage is legendary, the ladies also love her nail and hair packages.

For further rejuvenation, a stay at the superb Villa 25 is highly recommended. Five minutes drive past the Port Vila docks you enter the gates of Dream Cove, and immediately get the feeling you’re in for something special. This expansive coastal headland has been carefully transformed from its original forest state into an exclusive enclave that houses a collection of Vanuatu’s fi nest homes. It’s here you’ll fi nd Villa 25, sitting on its own private beach with the clearest water you could possibly imagine.

Villa 25’s collection of 3 two-bedroom villas is a clear indication that Vanuatu can deliver a world class travel experience. As you’d expect, each villa is superbly furnished. You have a spectacular infi nity pool, that from a distance looks like it drops into the ocean and if you want to go diving or deep sea fi shing, the operators can pick you up straight off the beach.

Then there’s the food. Or shall we say Fiona Gillanders, Villa 25’s private chef. This Queensland trained executive chef has more than 20 years experience and a resume that includes numerous award winning restaurants, and she can come to Villa 25 and cook (almost) anything you desire. She hand picks the best ingredients from local suppliers, adds her own fl air and voila, you have a fi rst-class dining experience in one of the world’s most idyllic tropical settings.

Luxury with a conscienceFor those who want luxury with an eco twist, Ratua Resort is the obvious choice. And would you believe this resort gives away 100% of what it earns? Sounds unlikely in an era where return of investment is the corporate mandate, but surprisingly, that’s exactly what you’ll fi nd with this stunning eco-hideaway.

Located on a 146 acre private island off Santo Islands south coast, Ratua mixes rustic luxury with a serious commitment to preserving the local environment and supporting the local people.

10 MINUTES FROM EVERYTHING!

The resort itself has 15 villas, all individually constructed using wood imported from Indonesia, and each named after animals like Tiger, Crocodile and Monkey. Inside you’ll fi nd hand-picked antique furniture that blends in with the natural wood interior.

When it’s time to eat, Ratua’s chef uses produce that comes straight from their organic garden and meat that’s bred on the island’s own cattle ranch, as well as seafood that sourced from local fi shermen. To top it off, the wine is fl own in from the owner’s personal vineyard in France.

The underwater postSomething you won’t fi nd at Ratua is an underwater Post Offi ce. For that you’ll need to visit Hideaway Island. Just a short drive and quick boat ride from Port Vila, Hideaway is an affordable holiday option that caters to absolutely anyone, and it’s famous for the world’s only underwater post offi ce.

This laid back resort has long been popular with divers who have easy access to an amazing underwater wall that drops 100 metres down, but is only 100 metres from the shore. Hideaway also happens to be in the middle of marine sanctuary, which makes for an abundance of sea creatures and colourful coral.

Along with the families, couples and honeymooners that visit the island, Hideaway has become increasingly popular with school groups coming to Vanuatu. The marine reserve being the ideal place for kids to study life underwater and like every visitor to the island, send friends or family a postcard from under the sea!

Discover it for yourselfWhile these are just some of the highlights to be found in Vanuatu, there is so much more to see and do. It’s really just a matter of getting people up there to see it for themselves. Like the thousands of Kiwi’s who have already made Vanuatu their destination of choice, new visitors will be surprised by what they can experience and will no doubt come back for more.

Vanuatu’ s l eading chi ld-free boutique re s ort

Why Vanuatu mattersWhen your national economy depends on tourism for 40% of its GDP, it’s quite obvious that increasing visitor numbers is a major priority. At Tok Tok 2011, Vanuatu’s annual travel and tourism showcase, the commitment to improve a tough last 12 months was obvious from the very fi rst speech.

The opening ceremony brought news that Vanuatu would be increasing investment to improve tourist numbers to the outer islands - the major announcement being the completion of the Malampa Travel Call Centre, which will provide a vital line of communication between buyers and tourist operators in the islands of Malakula, Paama and Ambryn - areas where reliable telecommunications have traditionally been a challenge.

The Tok Tok closing speech by Vanuatu’s Minister of Finance, Moana Kalosil Carcasses confi rmed just how serious this country is about moving forward. The Minister announcing that the government would boost its tourism funding from 136 million Vatu (NZ$1.83 million) to 200 million Vatu (NZ$2.69 million). He went on to say that the government would also offer tax breaks to resorts and hotels, and there would be tax exemptions on any new building or extensions. All great news for the local operators who have been adversely affected by a number of factors including the high Australian Dollar, the Queensland fl oods and the Christchurch earthquake.

Spearheading the new push to increase New Zealand visitors is a low season advertising campaign with the key message ‘Discover What Matters’.

‘Discover What Matters is all about coming to Vanuatu to enjoy the simple things in life and coming back to what people fi nd really important. It’s about fi nding yourself in a tropical location that gives travellers the chance to enjoy an authentic travel experience’ says Linda Kalpoi, General Manager of Vanuatu Tourism.

‘We call it open tourism because it’s real, it’s organic and it’s clean. The fact is Vanuatu has so much to see and do….it’s a paradise that really is waiting to be discovered’ says Linda.

A recipe for romanceCrystal clear waters, fl awless beaches and sunny blue skies make the Cook Islands the perfect place to celebrate your love.

Page 21: Islandtime Magazine

This love is realEveryone knows the well-worn Hollywood cliché. The happy couple walking hand-in-hand along a white sand beach without a care in the world. It’s an image we’ve all seen a thousand times, but in the Cook Islands this scene hasn’t been made up, it’s real and for those who come here it’s pure magic.

The Cook Island’s is about as far from hustle and bustle as you can get. Add that to some of the South Pacifi c’s most spectacular natural scenery and you have a true recipe for romance.

All fl ights from New Zealand to the Cook Islands land in Rarotonga and any couple that stays here will be spoilt for choice. The worn-down volcanic pyramid provides a stunning backdrop to an island that boasts some serious romantic escapes. Beachfront resorts, holiday homes and guest houses are all great options and can certainly fi t most budgets.

Less than hours fl ight from Rarotonga is Aitutaki, the other main tourist stop. World famous for its breathtaking coral lagoon, Aitutaki is heaven for couples. As you’d expect, snorkelling and boat trips exploring the lagoon are a must-do for visitors and there are some interesting sights on land, including local marae and some fascinating coral-walled churches.

Having said that, the best thing about Aitutaki is being able to do absolutely nothing. Sleep in, swim, snooze in the afternoon, kick back with a cocktail, on Aitutaki there is no rush. This is a place to relax and enjoy each others company, which is just what this special part of the world was created for.

Tying the knot in paradiseThe Cook Islands have always been a popular place for Kiwis to get married and it’s no surprise why. The ‘Cooks’ are exquisitely beautiful, the locals will welcome you with open arms and the laid back island atmosphere is guaranteed to charm anyone.

But while the stunning location looks after itself, there’s more to a great island wedding than just sending out invites and jumping on the plane. Every couple wants to know that their special day will turn out just as they’ve planned and that means getting a local professional to organise everything from the catering to the photography.

The expert organisersThe resorts of the Cook Islands are wedding experts. Places like Moana Sands Beachfront Hotel and Villas make the whole process easy for couples tying the knot. They have partnered with Wedded Bliss, one of Raratonga’s leading wedding coordinators to provide guests with a comprehensive ‘Romance Package’, including a personal planner who will liaise with a couple from start to fi nish.

They’ll organise the wedding location (in most cases the fl awless white sand beach in front of the Moana Sands resort), the celebrant or minister, transfers to the Registrar of Marriages, a fl oral bouquet and all the other essentials. For those who want to spend a little more, there’s a list of optional extras including pre-wedding massages and the production of a wedding DVD.

The Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa is another popular spot for weddings and has had couples from all over the world choosing their no-fuss wedding ceremony on Aro’a Beach. (Aro’a Beach sits next to Aro’a Lagoon - which appropriately translates to Lagoon of Love). Married couples choosing to renew their vows are also becoming frequent guests of the resort and with a such a spectacular setting who could blame them.

The Cook Islands Wedding ChecklistThe legal requirements of getting married in the Cook Islands are straightforward, but there a few things that Kiwis should take note of:

• If a bride or groom is under the age of 21 they will need written parental consent.

• An application for a marriage license MUST be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages at least three working days before the wedding i.e. New Zealanders cannot apply for a licence before they arrive.

• Applicants for a wedding licence must produce a passport, and if divorced, a copy of the Decree Absolute.

At the Pacifi c Resorts, who have locations on Aitutaki and Raratonga, couples-to-be also enjoy a fi rst-class service from a specialist wedding events team. These wedding professionals can attend to every detail and make sure couples, their families and their friends have a day they will never forget.

If a boutique resort is preferred, Rumours Luxury Villas and Spa on Muri Beach is a wonderful choice. Winner of the Best Spa in the Cook Islands at the 2011 World Travel Awards and the only Cook Islands property to be selected as a member of the Small Elegant Hotels of the World, Rumours offers elegant surroundings and world class luxury right on Muri Beach. Once again they provide a wedding co-ordinator and because it’s a smaller property there’s an opportunity to book out the entire resort for an exclusive and totally private wedding experience.

Signing is simpleGetting married in the Cook Islands is also easy from a legal point of view. As a general rule most South Pacifi c nations require a 30 day wait before the marriage, but in the Cook Islands couples can marry three days after landing in the country. If that isn’t quite quick enough, couples in a particular hurry can pay a small fee to waive this residency requirement! Otherwise the legal side of a Cook Islands marriage is straightforward. The only paperwork needed are birth certifi cates (in English), original passports and any ‘decree absolute’ (divorce documents), if this applies.

The icing on the cakeWhich brings us to the all-important honeymoon. Even if you’ve chosen to get married back home in New Zealand, the Cook Islands is obviously a great place to come for your honeymoon. Quite simply, you couldn’t hope to fi nd a more romantic part of the world to celebrate your lifelong commitment. If you’ve chosen to come to the Cook Islands for the wedding, there’s no need to worry about the honeymoon - all you need to do is stay exactly where you are.

Let’s face it, true love is hard to fi nd, but if you are lucky enough to meet that special someone it’s a moment that should be celebrated. And there’s no better place to do that than the Cook Islands.
