The times have changedThirteen years ago, Renae Pocklington had the vision to create a trade publication dedicated to South Pacifi c travel. Since then Islandtime has proven to be a great way for retail agents, wholesalers and the travel trade to keep up-to-date with all that’s happening in this wonderful part of the world.

As the new publishers of Islandtime, you can be rest assured that Fran and I will stay true to magazine’s original purpose and we’ll also be looking for new ways to inspire our readers.

In this edition we feature two great destinations. First we take a look at the magical islands of Vanuatu after my exciting and interesting visit to Tok Tok, and we also fall in love in the Cook Islands. You will also notice that each island has a dedicated section where you’ll fi nd updates, promotions and local news.

Launch of the Vessel of LovePacifi c Resort Rarotonga recently launched their new Wedding Vaka affectionately named “Vaka O Te Inangaro” – Vessel of Love with a traditional ceremony on Muri Beach. Te Tika Mataiapo – Dorice Reid20 June 1943 – 17 June 2011In June of this year the Cook Islands lost Te Tika Mataiapo - Dorice Reid, one of the country’s truly great leaders. While it would take a book to tell her life story and describe her signifi cant deeds, the following words by Tata Crocombe illustrate the passion Dorice had for the Cook Islands and its people.

“Te Tika loved life passionately and lived it to the full always giving 100% to every one of the many roles she played across the breadth of Cook Islands society. There were no half measures or holding back. She was the fi rst to arrive at every meeting and would volunteer to take on the tough jobs that needed doing. She was there to help take the Cook Islands forward not for any complicated personal or political agendas. She was sincere, loyal and trust worthy as well as completely fearless…

…Te Tika was deeply devoted to the tireless and enthusiastic service of other Cook Islanders in whatever way she could assist. She stood aside from politics so that she could work with everyone for the common good. She was selfl ess, perhaps too selfl ess for her own good, and kept up a phenomenally busy schedule of positive and constructive good works with dignity, enthusiasm and good humour right to the very end.

The real FijiWith its lush green tropical rainforests and abundant fauna, it is no wonder Taveuni is called the ‘Garden Island’. However, it wasn’t always so serene. Sitting 6.5 km off the East Coast of Vanua Levu, Taveuni (Fiji’s third biggest island), is actually the remains of a massive volcano that rose from the sea fl oor. In fact eruptions and lava fl ows were still part of life up until the mid 1500’s. Thankfully things have settled down on Taveuni, but the remnants of this volcanic activity now form some of the island’s most popular attractions.

Lake Tagimaucia is one of the islands most famous landmarks. Sitting 832 metres above sea level, this spectacular crater lake (now extinct) is fi lled with masses of fl oating vegetation. The Lake is also home to the rare tagimaucia fl ower which blossoms with a red and white centre. Visitors have two ways to view the Lake, hiking up by foot (which is an all day affair) or they can take a 4WD vehicle and see the lake from a distance. A visit to Bouma Falls is also a must. The area is surrounded by colourful fl ora and the huge natural rock pool under the waterfall is top spot for a swim.

For beauty of a different kind, visitors can’t go past Taveuni Island Resort and Spa. Consistently voted one Fiji’s best resorts, this exclusive boutique property is owned by 30 year locals, Ric and Do Cammick who are well-known for discovering the world famous Rainbow Reef and a host of other dive spots.

New GSA for AircalinAircalin has announced the appointment of The Walshe Group as its new GSA for both New Zealand and Australia. This announcement brings to a close an association of 25 years with World Aviation.

Niue

Whale season has begun in Niue with the fi rst sightings of migrating humpback whales in

Niue occurring in recent months. Niue is on a humpback whale migratory path meaning

each year the island is blessed with these gentle giants who arrive in Niue’s waters to calve

and nurse their young. Since the initial sighting, many more whales have arrived and tour

operators have started to take visitors out to swim with them.

Niue Island is one of the only places in the world where visitors can swim with these majestic

animals. It is frequently described as a once in a lifetime experience. This amazing experience

was rated as the number one activity in the South Pacifi c by Lonely Planet writer Brett

Atkinson after his up close snorkeling encounter in Niue with a whale and her calf.

Because Niue is an atoll, its deep waters mean visitors don’t have to head out to sea to see

these gentle giants – they swim within 50 meters of the shore providing a spectacular show.

Guests at Niue’s Matavai resort are often treated to the spectacle of whale gymnastics while

they enjoy dinner on the resort deck.

At night, the whales are so close to the shore their calls have been known to keep people

awake. The whales are one of the major attractions for boaties as they are often right in the

mooring fi eld. Boaties are treated to amazing sights such as mothers basking on the surface

with their calves and can drift off to sleep listening to the whales sing to each other in the bay.

Record numbers for NiueA concentrated promotion by wholesale partners has led a record number of visitors fl ying into Niue over recent months. This busy period is also set to continue with forward bookings in October and November looking very strong. This is particularly good news for the small Pacifi c nation, as November is traditionally considered an off-peak period of travel. Local accommodation providers have also confi rmed the boost in arrivals by reporting a signifi cant rise in occupancy rates.

Visitor Centre open for businessThe Niue Visitor Centre was offi cially opened in August by Niue Premier, Toke Talagi, and New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs, Murray McCully. The Centre will provide visitors with local advice about what to see, where to eat, and anything else they may need for a memorable Niue experience!

Radisson Plaza Tahiti appoints rep for Australia and New ZealandChristophe Guardia, General Manager of the Radisson Plaza Resort Tahiti is very pleased to announce the appointment of Renae Pocklington as their new representative for Australia and New Zealand.

Renae is not new to the travel industry, having spent in excess of 20 years in travel retail, wholesale and publishing, including 14 years managing Tahiti Tourisme in New Zealand. She has recently relocated to Queensland and created a hotel representation company named ‘Barrukka’ (meaning ‘talk’ in the aboriginal language) – the art of communication - she will represent the property in both markets.

Tahiti Hiltons pick up awardsThe Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa and the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa have earned rankings at this year’s TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice awards.

The Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa was chosen as number four in the South Pacifi c in the Relaxation/Spa Hotel category and number fi ve in the Romance Hotel category. Named by author James Michener the “most beautiful lagoon in the world”, the Bora Bora hotel is located in a sacred cove. Guests arrive at the resort’s fl oating lobby by private yacht and can stay at villas on the lush hillside, white sand beach or over the water.

Major refresh for Le MeridienThe reopening of Le Méridien Bora Bora and the relaunch of Le Méridien Tahiti following resort-wide renovations has re-envigorated both properties with a distinctively modern French Polynesian ambiance.

Moves at MangoesPort Vila’s Mangoes Resort has recently completed a major refurbishment of its popular bar and restaurant. Diners will the love the Indonesian inspired redesign that has created a space that’s light and airy. Needless to say, the exquisite local beef and seafood dishes are being served as always.

A change for the betterAs already mentioned, Vanuatu has something for everyone. While its had an assortment of different names over the years (most recently Palms Resort and Casino and before that Le Meridien), Holiday Inn has undergone a serious transformation. An impressive $NZ18.9 million has been spent on everything from a new kids pool complete

with giant cascading water buckets, to a new expanded kids club area, to the top-to-bottom refurbishment of rooms, to a refurbished conference centre that caters for up 180 delegates. The fabulous lobby has also been upgraded, along with a brand new pool bar and a lagoon side gym.

With the Seaside Wing accommodation now complete, renovations of the hotel’s Banyan Wing rooms are due to open late September, plus there are future plans for a dedicated teens area and a renovation of the suspension walk bridge that links the over water bungalows to the main resort. So far the feedback from the travel trade and guests has been fantastic and it seems like all the hard work is paying off.

Another one of the big properties making changes is the iconic Iririki Resort and Spa, which has widened its focus on the couples and honeymoon market to include families. ‘We really have made the resort more family friendly. We’ve set up a completely new kids club area and we have a new program full of activities like arts and crafts, sandcastle making, nature walks, outdoor games and we even have a bouncy castle’ says Marketing Manager, Jodie Ryan. Iririki also provides child minding and babysitting services for kids aged 0-3 years, which is fantastic for parents that want to take the ferry into town for a meal.

For those wanting a location that’s right in the heart of town, Iririki’s sister resort The Grand is the ideal spot, being a short walk to everything in downtown Port Vila. For those who like a fl utter, The Grand also has its own casino with blackjack, roulette and baccarat tables, and a host of poker machines.

Exploring the great outdoorsWhile there’s a whole lot to see and do around Port Vila, every traveller should have a taste of the natural beauty outside the main centre. A trip to the Mele Cascades is a must-do and local operators like Evergreen Tours can pick you up from your hotel foyer and whisk you off to this natural wonderland in air-conditioned comfort. After a scenic 15 minute drive you’ll be greeted by a series of cool water pools, bubbling cascades and the impressive 50 metre high upper waterfall. Packing the togs is essential as it’s a great place for a refreshing dip. More adventurous travellers can even take an abseiling course down the cascades with tour company Edge Adventures, although the two 25 metre drops are not for the faint hearted!

In complete contrast to the lush green of Mele, is the stark volcanic landscape of Mount Yasur on Tanna Island. A number of companies, such as Enkahi Discovery Tours, run day trips from Port Vila, which include an early morning pick-up for the hour long fl ight to the island. Sam Nasse is the friendly face of Enkahi and he’s an expert guide when it comes to seeing Tanna.

While the spectacular fi reworks display of Mount Yasur is an obvious highlight, he also makes a point of giving tourists a unique cultural experience. ‘My visitors get to see local women cooking vegetables in one of the island’s natural hot springs and we visit The Secret Garden at Iafofa Village which is considered a ‘cultural bank’ in Tanna’ says Sam. To top it off, Sam treats each tour group to a traditional Tanna feast full of fresh seafood - and if you ask him nicely he may even get a crayfi sh for the grand price of $NZ10! Now that’s the sort of eating that any Kiwi will love.

Why Vanuatu mattersWhen your national economy depends on tourism for 40% of its GDP, it’s quite obvious that increasing visitor numbers is a major priority. At Tok Tok 2011, Vanuatu’s annual travel and tourism showcase, the commitment to improve a tough last 12 months was obvious from the very fi rst speech.

The opening ceremony brought news that Vanuatu would be increasing investment to improve tourist numbers to the outer islands - the major announcement being the completion of the Malampa Travel Call Centre, which will provide a vital line of communication between buyers and tourist operators in the islands of Malakula, Paama and Ambryn - areas where reliable telecommunications have traditionally been a challenge.

The Tok Tok closing speech by Vanuatu’s Minister of Finance, Moana Kalosil Carcasses confi rmed just how serious this country is about moving forward. The Minister announcing that the government would boost its tourism funding from 136 million Vatu (NZ$1.83 million) to 200 million Vatu (NZ$2.69 million). He went on to say that the government would also offer tax breaks to resorts and hotels, and there would be tax exemptions on any new building or extensions. All great news for the local operators who have been adversely affected by a number of factors including the high Australian Dollar, the Queensland fl oods and the Christchurch earthquake.

Spearheading the new push to increase New Zealand visitors is a low season advertising campaign with the key message ‘Discover What Matters’.

‘Discover What Matters is all about coming to Vanuatu to enjoy the simple things in life and coming back to what people fi nd really important. It’s about fi nding yourself in a tropical location that gives travellers the chance to enjoy an authentic travel experience’ says Linda Kalpoi, General Manager of Vanuatu Tourism.

The Cook Islands Wedding ChecklistThe legal requirements of getting married in the Cook Islands are straightforward, but there a few things that Kiwis should take note of:

• If a bride or groom is under the age of 21 they will need written parental consent.

• An application for a marriage license MUST be made in person to the Registrar of Marriages at least three working days before the wedding i.e. New Zealanders cannot apply for a licence before they arrive.

The only paperwork needed are birth certifi cates (in English), original passports and any ‘decree absolute’ (divorce documents), if this applies.
