ISLAMIC CENTER OF LONG ISLANDThe Islamic Center of Long Island (ICLI), since its incorporation in 1982 has served the growing needs of the diverse Muslim community and has developed a special expertise and reputation for its outreach and award winning interfaith programs. ICLI inaugurated a historic first ever Interfaith Institute at ICLI on October 25th, 2015 to promote better understanding of Islam and Muslims among other faith groups.

ICLI is pleased to inform you that Alhamdulillah, the multi-year expansion of the center is complete! The additional space of 19,000 sq ft includes 13 classrooms, an expanded preschool, state of the art library, an Interfaith Institute; much needed funeral services, ample parking, conference facilities and recreation space for our community sisters, brothers and youth.

Gardens of ICLIThere is a proud tradition of gardens within Islam, which serve as places of reflection and rest. With this tradition in mind, the Islamic Center of Long Island has continued to embellish the gardens within its premises with beautiful shrubs, trees, flowers and vegetables. The monthly pictures chosen for this calendar display the highlights of the varieties of flowers planted by our volunteers acknowledged below. Allah (SWT) mentions in the Quran: “And We have spread out the earth, and have cast (firm) mountains in it and have caused to grow from it, every kind of delightful plant. As an insight and a reminder to every penitent servant.” [Quran 50, 7-8]. “He it is who sends down the water from the sky and We bring forth from it the buds of every plant; then We bring forth the green shoots, and We bring forth from it the thick clustered grain, and from the date palm, from the sheaths thereof, spring pendant bunches, and gardens of grapes, and olives, and pomegranates, alike and also unlike. Look upon their fruit, when they bear fruit, and upon its ripening. Here indeed are signs for a people who believe.” [Quran 6, 99].

1619-1800s:An estimated 10 million Africans were brought to North America as slaves. Approximately 30% were Muslims. In the 1730’s, Ayub Sulaiman ibn Diallo, slaved in Maryland, became a go between for his people and the British after his repatriation.

1775:Former slave Peter Salem (Saleem) fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill and throughout the American Revolution. Muslim Americans have served with distinction in all U.S. wars.

1819:Freed by his master, Yarrow Mamout, establishes himself as a property owner and bank investor in Georgetown, today part of Washington, D.C.

1898:Kawkab Amrika (Star of America), the first Arabic newspaper to appear in the United States, began daily publication, as reported by the New York Times.

1907:Tatar immigrants from Poland, Russia, and Lithuania found the American Mohammedan Society, the nation’s first Muslim organization.

1908:Large numbers of Muslim immigrants began to enter the United States from parts of the Ottoman Empire, including today’s Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey.

1919:The first Islamic association was founded in Highland Park outside of Detroit, Michigan, where many immigrants found work in auto manufacturing plants.

1934:The Mother Mosque, the oldest standing building built specifically to be a mosque, was established in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

1938:The American Moslem Society was established in Dearborn, MI. It is the second oldest standing mosque in the United States.

1949:Mohameden Mosque (now Jame Masjid, Muslim Mosque Association) in Sacramento, CA was completed.

1957:The Islamic Center of Washington, D.C. was dedicated, with President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower in attendance.

1965:Published soon after its subject’s assassination in February 1965, The Autobiography of Malcolm X tells the story of one man’s conversion to Islam in the larger context of the African-American experience. It remains one of the most influential books of the 20th century.

1960s-1970s:Bangladeshi American architect Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan is regarded as the “Einstein of structural engineering” and considered “the greatest structural engineer of the second half of the 20th century” for his constructions of the Sears Tower and John Hancock Center in Chicago. He also designed the Hajj terminal in Saudi Arabia.

1960-1981:During his professional career, Muhammad Ali joined Nation of Islam in 1964 and embraced mainstream Islam in 1975. He had the honor of lighting the flame at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA. In 1999, he was crowned “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated and “Sports Personality of the Century” by the BBC. Ali declined the opportunity of being featured in the walk of fame so that people will not step on the word “Muhammad”. His star is the only one engraved on the wall and not the ground.

1969-1989:American Muslim NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is considered one of the greatest players of all time. During his 20-year professional career in the NBA, he scored the highest points total of any player in league history (38,387 points), in addition to winning a record six Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards and six NBA championships.

1984-2002:Nigerian American Hakeem “The Dream” Abdul Olajuwon is one of the greatest players in NBA history. In the 1993-94 season, Olajuwon became the only player in NBA history to win the NBA’s MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and Finals MVP awards in the same season. He is a devout Muslim and established a Dawah center in downtown Houston.

1988:Siraj Wahhaj, an African-American convert to Islam and an Imam, led his community in an anti-drug patrol in which they staked out drug houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the cold of winter for 40 days and nights, forcing the closure of 15 drug houses. This effort received high praise from the New York City Police Department and the media.

The evolution of Muslim presence in America went through 10 phases to satisfy 10 different needs. 1st Phase: Antebellum EraThis was a time when the enslaved people, many of whom were Muslims, were brought to this country from Africa to satisfy the first need of serving the elite.

2nd Phase: Immigration of Unskilled WorkersImmigrant Muslims of mainly unskilled workers who arrived in the late 1800s and early 1900s who came mainly to satisfy the second need of improving their own economic status.

3rd Phase: Organized Muslim MovementsIn 1930, Wallace D. Fard founded the Nation of Islam (NOI) in Detroit, MI. The leadership was assumed by Elijah Muhammad in 1934. In 1947, Malcolm X joined the NOI. He then separated from it in March 1964 and formed Muslim Mosque, Inc. A year later he was assasinated. Wallace D. Muhammad assumed the leadership of NOI in 1975. In 1976 he renamed the organization the World Community of al-Islam in the West; the name was changed again to the American Muslim Mission in 1978.

4th Phase: Following Sunni IslamMany left the NOI & AMI and followed the Sunni path in line with main stream Islam like Sh. Dawud Faisal from Grenada who founded Islamic Mission of America in 1924 in Brooklyn. Professor Ezeldeen founded the first nationwide Sunni Islamic organization United Islamic Communities. First Muslim Mosque of Pittsburgh (1932) along with First Cleveland Mosque (early 1930s) are examples of Mosques established by followers of AMI and later reverted to following mainstream Islam. Imam Siraj Wahhaj who embraced Islam in 1969 established Masjid At-Taqwa in Brooklyn, NY in 1981.

5th Phase: Student Influx and Establishment of Student OrganizationsThe second wave of Muslim immigration to the U.S. happened in the second half of the 20th century to fulfill the fifth need of seeking better education and staying active.

6th Phase: Owning Places of WorshipIn the 1970s and 1980s the influx of Muslim students from abroad, spearheaded the purchasing of small churches and residential housing and later alongside with community members built Mosques from the ground up to achieve the sixth need of having a place of worship of their own. Currently we have slightly over 2,500 Islamic centers in America.

7th Phase: Preserving Identity and HeritagePreserving the identity of the new generation started with establishing Clara Muhammad Schools. Since the mid-1990s, hundreds of full-time Islamic schools, full time and after hour Hifth schools, and multiple universities have been established across the country. Currently we have about over 350 educational institutions.

8th Phase: Institutionalizing Islamic WorkThe size of the community and the amount of need brought to focus the eighth need of establishing institutions which were evident in the following areas:• Professional organizations: like NAAIMS, APPNA,

AAAEA , & AMAL.• Financial Institutions: Pioneered by MSI of ICNA
