Our Temple is changing and will have to make some major changes so we can continue to serve the Children of North Central and North West Kansas. We average serving about 40 to 50 children at any one time. Our work to serve the children in our jurisdiction is why we are Shriners and in our heart why we are proud to wear our Fez and support our Clubs and Temple. This months Stated Meeting in Manhattan we will hear from the 2025 Committee reporting on their view how we will meet this challenge with less members and less income to support our Temple. It can be done, we are not the smallest Temple; many smaller than us operate and serve the children who cannot help themselves. I often refer to The Shriners Creed that each one of us obligated to vow when we became a member of the Mystic Shrine. “As Shriners we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners Hospital for Children to be the world’s greatest philan- thropy, and we covenant with each other to support its “temples of mercy” with spirit, time, talent and means.” I believe one of the most important words in that paragraph is the eighth word, “serve”, and that reminds me of a story I would like to tell. A time several centuries ago during the American Revolutionary war, a man dressed in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers who were working hard to repair a defensive barrier. Their leader was barking out orders from the back of his horse about how best to repair the barrier, but made no effort to get off his horse and physically help them. When the man in civilian clothes asked why he did not help his men repair the barrier, the leader said, “Sir, I am a Corporal!” The man in civilian clothes apologized, dismounted and then began to help the exhausted soldiers repair the defensive barrier. When the job was done, he turned to the Corporal and said, “If you need more help, call me.” With that parting comment, Commander-In- Chief George Washington remounted his horse and rode on his way. At our last very important Stated Meeting we only had 41 Nobles making decisions with the leadership in our Committees and Units working to serve our Temple being just a few. We hear a lot of Nobles throwing around their opinions but very few throwing themselves into solving problems and serving our Temple. Our Ma- sonic teachings and prayers tell us that harmony being the strength and support of all societies, more especially of ours. We are also taught to be zealous and faithful, to be unbiased and benevolent, and to act the peacemaker, in case of dissensions, disputes, and quarrels among the Brethren. Let us live by these principals, like our Brother George Washington, as we labor among us serving ISIS Temple serving the children who cannot serve themselves, for the world’s greatest philanthropy, Shriners Hospital for Children. November/December Volume # 8

Your 2018 Divan has been trying to be transparent to the Nobles with the State of the Temple as we have endeavored to serve the Nobles of ISIS Temple and ensure the future of the Greatest Philanthropy in the World, Shriners Hospital for Children. As I mentioned last month, our building has had several unexpected repairs and they continue to happen. We find new leaks in the roof every time it rains. The building fire suppression system has to have $2,874 in upgrades so we can meet code to continue to be a place of public accom-modation. We need to continue renting the building to raise money for our hospital travel fund. There are several ways you can come to the aid of your temple: pay your dues on time, purchase your circus tickets when they are offered, partici-pate in our other fundraisers and bring in new members who will pledge to do the same. We also started the “300K Club” this year which mem-bers pledge to give $100 per year for three years to the temple for use where most needed. Would you consider joining? Another way to help the temple is to include it in your estate planning. If you have a “Qualified Retirement Plan,” one which you or your beneficiary must pay taxes on when distributed, such as a Traditional IRA, 401(k), SEP, you can designate a 501(c)10 charity to receive all or part of it and the receiving charity pays no taxes on what they receive, provided it is not for social purposes of the members. Beneficiary distributions from an-nuities are equally exempt from taxation. Most of these plans let you change beneficiaries at any time and you can designate a percentage of the total account to go to specific beneficiaries. “IRC 170(c)(4) provides that, in the case of a contribution or gift by any individual, the term “charitable contribution” includes a contribution or gift to or for the use of a domestic fraternal society, order, or association, operating under the lodge system, but only if such contribution or gift is to be used exclu-sively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational pur-poses, or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.” Your tem-ple needs your continuing help and support. Would you consider taking action on one of the above avenues to help? Fraternally, Alex Leslie High Priest & Prophet

CHRISTMAS FANTASY Saturday December 1, 2018 At the Central Mall Salina.

2259 S 9th St, Salina, KS 67401 START TIME: 2PM

We need as many Nobles and ladies as possible to show up and give support.

MESSAGE FROM THE ISIS SHRINE CHIEF RABBAN

Nobles and Ladies, This year is rapidly coming to a close. Once again next year we will find ourselves making hard decisions about finances. I feel like we have made a lot of progress this year and hope to continue on with that again next year. As I look through all the necessary papers to try and come up with a viable budget for next year I find it very difficult to make ends meet. We will have to tighten our belts even tighter next year and hope-fully continue moving in the right direction to accomplish our goals and continue on with the great work this Shrine Organization has been doing and will continue to do. I really appreciate all the support we have had this year from all the No-bles, their ladies and families. This organization is truly one of the great ones, and we cannot let it fall. So with that being said lets start looking forward to next year and plan things out now so we can have a great year. I am very open to any suggestions any Noble or their ladies may have. Feel free to contact me with any suggestions or comments and always remember that I do want to hear from each and every one of you. Lets plan on having a great year and next year, I plan on having all the support from the Nobility throughout the Isis Shrine Jurisdiction. I am attaching my cell number to this clip for anyone who would like to con-tact me with any suggestions or questions. Fraternally, Russ Ingle Chief Raban (785)216-0883

MESSAGE FROM THE ISIS SHRINE ASSISTANT RABBAN

Greetings Nobels and Ladies As the end of the year nears, the holidays are right around the corner. We have many plans for the upcoming meetings and holiday parties. Our Re-corder Casey Flinn has been working extremely hard to secure a great lineup of entertainment for all of us. I hope everyone takes advantage of the opportunities to join in on the festivities. Our ceremonial will be held jointly with Midian Shrine in Wichita on November 3rd. I would like to encourage everyone to find a candidate to bring along to strengthen our temple. With our aging nobility we are in desperate need of younger Nobels. Come join all of the activities for the weekend.

We are already putting a lot of thought into our temple’s year in 2020. We are looking to do most all of our activities in our ISIS Temple in Salina. We will need your support and participation to make this happen. Any ideas you have would be very much appreciated.

The 2020 Imperial Session will be in Kansas City, Missouri. It will start with activities on the July 4th weekend, involving all Nobels and their Ladies. We need to get an approximate head count of Nobels and Ladies planning to attend. I need this rough count by early February 2019! I will have to start getting paperwork turned into Imperial to ensure we have rooms at the host motel. If you think you might be going, please contact Abby at the office. She will need your name and how many.

We have made many changes this past year, some have not been easy, others have taken a lot of time and work from you the Nobility and the Divan. We need to always remember our Blue Lodge roots and work to-gether as brothers, even when we do not always agree and need to do what is most important for the ISIS Temple to survive.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at all meetings and events coming up. Happy and Safe Holidays. See you at the Temple to bring in the New Year!! Fraternally, Darrell Ryan Assistant Rabban

RECORDS CORNER On September 22, 2018 a Stated Meeting was held at the ISIS Shrine Temple. There were 42 Nobles present to discuss business and vote on different items. One of those items was changing the bylaws, and it passed. I am just waiting for the review from Imperial to say that they are correct. The other major vote was about the ISIS name. It was discussed, and a motion was made to keep the name as it is, and it passed. The evening closed with a wonderful dinner of pork chops, homemade scalloped potatoes, corn and dessert. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out. November 3, 2018 there will be a Ceremonial held in conjunction with Midian Shrine in Wichita, KS. The Ceremonial will take place at Midian Shrine, 130 N Topeka St, Wichita, KS 67202, and the Scottish Rite Center, 332 E 1st St N, Wichita, KS 67202. If there are any changes to these plans, the information will be available on the ISIS Shrine website, our Facebook page and Twitter account. At the time of the production of this newsletter, we only know of one new Noble who is going to join the ISIS Shrine. If you have a petition, please get it turned into the office as soon as possible so we can ensure we have everything properly prepared for them. December 1, 2018 will be the Christmas Party at the ISIS Shrine Temple. There are plans to have entertainment provided by performers from Kansas Wesleyan University, The Charades Barbershop Quartet, and possibly a Shrine patient. We will also be recognizing 25/50/60-year Shriners by pre-senting them with a certificate and pin if they are able to make it. Cost for dinner that night will be $25.00 per person and will consist of steak with all the trimmings, prepared by Scott City Shrine Club. If you are wanting to donate toys for the children at the hospital, you can bring them to the Christ-mas Party. Please RSVP by November 24, 2018. If you RSVP on or before November 24, 2018 and prepay, you will receive a free camel’s milk that evening. December 14, 2018 will be the next Stated Meeting and Elections. Through-out ISIS Shrine history, when elections take place, the Divan members have been voted to progress up the Divan line. If this continues for the 2019 Di-van, then we will have two vacant positions, High Priest and Prophet and Oriental Guide that will need to be filled. A Noble can run for any position on the Divan, except Potentate. In order to run for Potentate, he must have held one of the Rabban positions prior. Please come out and vote for your 2019 Divan, Imperial Representatives and CSSA Business Session Represen-tatives. December 31, 2018 there will be a huge New Year’s Eve Party at the Tem-ple. Tickets are $60 per person and that price includes finger food, two free drinks, and entertainment that will last through midnight. Drinks will be available for purchase. Entertainment will be provided by comedians Bryce Stanley with Jerad Langley (8:00 pm-9:30 pm) and Fun Pianos by 176 Keys (10:00 pm-midnight). Doors open at 7:00 pm. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event and can be ordered through the office. Nobles and Ladies are getting first shot at tickets, but they will be available to the general public by the first of December. Hurry and get yours as soon as possible because there are only 160 tickets total available!!! Thank you to all you Nobles and Ladies who continue to work to make this the greatest fraternal organization in the world. Without your continued dedi-cation and support, we would not be able to ensure that the children we sup-port receive the greatest health care available.

MEMO FROM MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Your Temple dues notifications are in the mail! Before you mail them back to the office, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, take the time to fill out your membership information updates on the back of the form. The membership committee has been trying to contact members who are behind in their dues and we have found incorrect phone numbers, addresses and email addresses. Some of this may be due to incorrect copying of the information in the office or maybe the information just wasn’t legible and we did the best we could with what we had. As we take the time to re-new our pledge to our fraternity, please think about someone among your friends who is not a Shriner and ask him to Be One. Fraternally, Russ Kontas Membership Committee

When God Comes Calling I am immersed with the public on a daily basis. I read the newspaper, follow the internet, listen to the radio and catch the nightly network news on a variety of TV channels. Violent crime, political wrangling, and natural disasters seem to take central stage. Flooding the East and South, 3 major hurricanes within the past 14 months, wild fires in the mountains of California, throw in some drought and a few tornadoes. We have seen some extreme weather that has left many people hurting. What seems worrisome is that I hear more about "Man Made Global Warming" as being the cause of these disaster than I hear about helping the real victims affect as a result of the disaster itself. I am no scientist or politician, but let me share a few facts: The Great Johnstown Flood of 1889, when according to one account 2,209 people lost their lives. The Peshtigo Forest Fire in Wisconsin in 1871, in which an estimated 1,500 people , possibly as many as 2,500 perished. The Great Fire of 1910 was the largest wild fire ever recorded in the western United Sates burned 3 million acres (roughly the size of Connecticut) in Northern Idaho an Western Montana in only 2 days killing 87 people, mostly fire fighters. The cause was listed as : extreme drought and above normal temperatures. The deadliest hurricane in American history hit Galveston Island in 1900 taking between 8,00 and 12,000 lives. A blizzard struck the East Coast in 1888 killing more than 400 people and dumped up to 55 inches of snow in some areas. What has become known as the Tri-State Tornado ripped a path through Southern Missouri, Illinois, and Indian on March 18,1925 kill-ing 695 people. The Tri-State tornado was part of a large tornado outbreak that day that also included Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Kansas. Another 747 people lost their lives in those storms making March 18,1925 the deadliest tornado day in U.S. History. I simply find it interesting that so many of our worst national disaster have occurred long before most of the claims being made today pertaining to "Man Made Global Warming" were even in play. Natural climate change is a probably for real and an ever evolving process. I would imagine that Noah and his boys were discussing climate change over floods years ago while floating around in a boat for several months. When disaster strikes and God comes calling He always expects us to take action! not, just to sit around, discuss the politics of the issue or "the how" and "the why" it happened or criticize the decisions people did or did not make. We are sent on a mission, which is not to change people or try to make change but rather to clear a path to make their lives easier. To share thier pain and lift up their spirit. To replace a sense of despair with vision of hope. America is a great, God fearing, Nation. and it's people are among the most caring people in the world. Shriners are great Men and also among the most caring in America. I am proud to be both an American and a Shriner. However, I do have to remind myself from time to time that: It's not what you "get" out of life but, It's what out "give" that really matters. Yours in Faith Richard Luthi Chaplin

IMPORTANT CIRCUS INFORMATION

The circus will be here before you know it. The 2019 Shrine Circus will be April 12 (2pm/7pm), April 13 (10am/2pm/7pm) and April 14 (2pm) at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina, KS. There will be many meet-ings between now and then to try and make this the most successful circus in recent history. Please visit the ISIS Shrine webpage and look at the calendar for those scheduled dates.

At the September Stated Meeting, I asked for volunteers to join the Membership Committee Team. We now have three mem-bers who have stepped up to fill these important jobs. Casey Flinn our Recorder, Galen Elliot the Director of Uniformed Units and Bob Short the Secretary of the North West Shrine Club are at work trying to RESTORE about 170 members to a paying status at ISIS. We’ve been sending emails, letters, and leaving phone messages. When we speak to these members we have had good luck in getting them to continue being members of our great Fraternity. Bob Short has been particularly success-ful in getting 11 of the 26 men he has been tasked with contact-ing to commit to paying their dues! That’s great work and the rest of us will have to work hard to match that effort. Our mem-bership has been steadily decreasing over the last fifteen years and the Membership Committee is not capable of turning things around by ourselves. Our membership has gone from 2,328 in 2003 and now it is 1,106. That is more than a 50% decrease. We cannot view this as anything but an opportunity to work together for change. Here’s a quote for you; “Change ain’t got no friends, but it is calling the tune we all dance to.” Al Swearingen, owner of the Gem Saloon, Deadwood, SD. We have to make some changes to the way things have always been done. Each of us must make a commitment to rebuilding ISIS’s membership. We are calling on all the Shrine Clubs and Blue Lodges to commit their members to assist us in getting new members. So far the North West Shrine Club, Logan County SC, Scott City SC, Ottawa County SC and Minneapolis #143 Blue Lodge have pledged to make new Masons and new Shrin-ers. We need to get younger ones in so that they can be assured solvency. He is work-ing on getting more clubs to sell ads for the Circus. OCSC did commit to selling ads for the 2019 Circus, which we already do a good job. Thank you to Larry Bertrand for your hard work.
