A major news item these days was the provocative statement ofMohan Bhagavat, “People like Mother Teresa did good work andservice. But the aim was to convert the poor to Christianity. This kindof service is devalued if conversions are done in the name of serviceor work….” By provocative I mean, a deliberate statement to incitepassion and to win sympathizers to his views and ideology. Anythingcommunal will have great impact in the society in India and the restof the world these days as religious fanaticism and communalpolarization once again are gaining grounds. People who employ suchtechnique are called as agent provocateurs who succeed in creatingconfusion getting what they want in the resultant melee. Sometimespolitical parties also employ such techniques. We do not know whetherthere was anything like that in this incident. Naturally, many havecome out with their responses to this statement including ArvindKejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. The social media carried manyinstant responses flooding so much of space and attracting attention. Some of these statements which we thought were impossible to beaired in public by responsible people are a reality we have to livewith, in this day and age. Mother herself has said: To me, conversionmeans changing of heart by love. Conversion by force or bribery is ashameful thing. It is a terrible humiliation for anyone to give upreligion for a plate of rice. Given the fact that Mother Teresa neverhid her loyalty to the church and her commitment to Jesus Christ asthe driving force of her acts of charity, the way it was presentednaturally evoked doubts in the minds of people who heard it spokenout of context. Once again, people think of end of the world anddoomsday or at least wonder why these things happen when theycome across these happenings. “Then you will be handed over to bepersecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nationsbecause of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and

will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appearand deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, thelove of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will besaved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the wholeworld as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Mt24:9-14). However, Jesus also said: “But of that day and hour no oneknows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Fatheralone.” (Mt. 24:36).

Stephen Hawking, well-known British physicist, and one whoclaims “God was not necessary,” answered to a question from AdaezeUyanwah, a teacher from California, about human shortcomings thatwould destroy humanity: “The human failing I would most like tocorrect is aggression. It may have had survival advantage in cavemandays, to get more food, territory or partner with whom to reproduce, but now it threatens to destroy us all.”

By the way, the other two threats that would make human lifeextinct, according to Hawking, were strong Ar tificial intelligenceand Alien life . The first one, namely, aggression is a threat fromwithin us while the other two are external, the artificial intelligencebeing our own invention like the boon of Bhasmasura in the Indianepics, and alien life, a plausible threat from outside.

Aggression has been raising its ugly heads of late in the form ofISIS cruelty and inhuman gratification in publicly beheading innocentcivilians in the most brutal manner forcing us to doubt radicallytheories like that of superman of Friedrich Nietzsche and wonder ifwe are regressing into an age of primitive aggression. Not only in theglobal arena, but also in India we witness this regression in the brutalacts and atrocities like incidents of rape, murder, mindless crueltyand vandalism on an ascending scale. As recent as March 5, 2015,although an accused rapist in the central jail in Dimapur, Nagaland, aprisoner was lynched by a mob breaking into the prison and murderinghim after parading him naked through the streets. Media, especially, social media are abounding with stories of this kind. They are ampleproof that aggression is a reality we confront in everyday life. “…. it

is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is whatcomes out of the mouth that defiles” (Mt 15:11). “For out of the heartcome evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defiles a person,…” (Mt 15:19-20). To go bythe words of our Lord, what comes out of the heart these days arethese kinds of brutalities and acts of aggression that attract so muchof publicity. An India that used treasure its tradition of tolerance andacceptance is seen these days raving about aggression and brutalityand annihilation of people and things that are perceived as alien anddifferent. We come across characters and messages on the socialnetworks spewing the poison of communalism and extremism pitchingpeople against people in modern India and subverting the true spiritof tolerance and peace which is the base of the Constitution of India.

The anniversary of papacy of Pope Francis, March 13, 2015, hehas called for a celebration of a day of prayer, 24 Hours for the Lordinitiative, from 5:00 pm to the next day 5:00 pm. Built into the Lentenobservance, it can be a call for us to repent and turnaround from allforms of aggression and to become a church of compassion andreconciliation. The church needs to be at the foot of the cross to learnfrom the sufferings of the Servant (Is 53). The church needs to becomethe bridge between heaven and earth.

Within the church which is the living sacrament and the body ofChrist, tenets we believe and profess, we find the shadows andreflection of these trends of aggression found in the world creepingin and taking many shapes and subtle forms. The baggage and burdensof history and traditions, the faith that has become weak making itimpossible to commit to what we profess, the radical discipleshipwhich calls for more living models, are challenges we find within ourcommunities. A form of cynicism and greed in place of the joy of theGospel seems to have taken over as the reigning mood. May be, lentis the acceptable time to free our minds of these traces of aggression.

If Hawking thinks aggression as one of the greatest threats for thehuman survival for the secular society, how much more would be thethreat if aggression creeps into the spiritual communities! By

aggression I mean all that is against charity, namely, our inability tobe open to the world and the Holy Spirit. It is to return to the basicinstincts and to forget the supernatural. St Paul says: “After all, ifyou were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contraryto nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much morereadily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olivetree!”(Rom 11:24). The danger is a live one even now and we may goback to the natural at any moment. And the lent invites us to be graftedin Jesus and to be alive with supernatural life. Jesus invites us: “Abidein Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless itabides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am thevine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, hebears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (Jn 15: 4-5).

Recently I happened to read an added version of the parable of theGood Samaritan written by Rev. Benny Nalkara CMI with the title“The Parable Re-Visited”. It is a good read for a self examination torevisit our call and mission. The Good Samaritan returns to see thewounded person in the inn.

When he reached the door, where the wounded man was lying, hecould hear the painful groaning…

He asked with shock and surprise to the innkeeper: “Dear Friend, why didn’t you look after him?”

He said: “you should pay in advance for any service.”

Didn’t I give you two denarii and even promised more? But, but…the poor man is still in pain. Why didn’t you do anything? Hiswounds remain the same.

The innkeeper replied unmoved: “Dear friend, this is a selffinanced inn. What you have given I accounted in the registrationand consultation heads. Our rule demands spot payments. No credit, please!” The Samaritan stood in bewildered silence for a while andthen came out dejected.

The church bell rang. The, the priest and the Levite were on theirway to the church.

Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the manwho fell among the robbers? He said, “The one who showed mercyon him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:36-37).

The question is whether we have been called to be goodSamaritans or good Innkeepers.

Blessed Mother Teresa was targeted by the fundamental forcesand they alleged that she did charity for religious conversion. Butthey were not in a position to question her credibility of being a GoodSamaritan. What we have started with noble intention as service ofGood Samaritans has turned out to be the professional service renderedby the modern NGO model innkeepers. Recently, Dr. V.A. Joseph, former MD & CEO, South Indian Bank, made a complimentary noteto the bishops, “You should learn from the CMIs how to run institutionas a business entity, of course, with charity.” He was appreciating ourcommitment of building institutions. At the same time, there is enoughmeat for soul searching regarding our orientation and mission contentin doing so.

1. Good Samaritan Vs Innkeeper Vs: How much could we movefrom the innkeeper to the Good Samaritan? Innkeepers are paidcaretakers, at times they are even pre paid care takers. Among theorganization models – Profit making, nonprofit making andcharitable organization, we are not fully profit making or fullycharitable. Many of our services for the faithful and the poor maybe counted as charitable, but most of the services may fall in thenonprofit making category with a price tag.

2. Offering of the Poor Widow Vs the Rich: Tell me who you gowith and I’ll tell you who you are. Good friends will make yougood (St. Chavara). The underlying statement of our service shallbe: ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of thesebrothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew (25:40).We need institutions and we have to run our institutions effectively. But we shall not lose sight of the poor and we shall keep in mindthat we have been anointed to proclaim good news to the poor. Weshall consciously increase the percentage of the poor and the lessprivileged students or beneficiaries in our institutions. Otherwisewe will end up training intellectuals without a compassion.Remember the people who criticized Mother Teresa. I happened

to view Prof. R Vaidynathan, professor form IIM Bangalore, whowas a student of Loyola College, Chennai. The parable of the poorwidow is an icon of total commitment and self giving withoutcounting the cost. Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow hasput in more than all the others. All these people gave their giftsout of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had tolive on (Luke 21: 1-4). We may be contributing much to the careof the poor and the needy. But are we perceived as the poor widowor the rich?

3. Jesus Vs 30 Pieces of Silver: The chosen one, Judas betrayedJesus for 30 pieces of silver. He did not enjoy it and nobody tookcare of him. Do we betray Jesus like Judas? There is a possibledanger in our pragmatic thinking to make easy money. Jesus saidabout him, “But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! Itwould be better for him if he had not been born.” (Mk.14:21). Thecommunity also will say the same. Should we betray our foundingfathers who built up our congregation and our institutions bypidiyary and kettuthengu and by the prayer and goodwill ofordinary people? “For the love of money is a root of all kinds ofevil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faithand pierced themselves with many.” (1Timothy 6:10) Because ofa few, we have become a betrayed community. In our home for thepoor (akasaparavakal), so far there was no shortage. The bowl offlour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil become empty (1Kings 17:16)

4. Faithful trustees Vs Wicked tenants: We have been entrustedwith the vineyard to take care of it and not to own it as one’s own.(Mathew 21:33-42) When the master asks for accountability, whydo we behave like the wicket tenants? We are where we are becausewe are CMIs, not because of our individual merit. We shall runour institutions with the policy of the community. Remember, noneof us is as smart as all of us. Institutions without communityinvolvement have either disappeared or taken over by outsiders. Why are some so resistant to common pooling, while enjoying thefruits of common resources and common identity of CMI family?

5. The Living Water Vs Water fr om the Well: The Samaritanwoman came to the well to draw water for daily needs, but shewent back with the living water. We left home and joined CMIfamily in search of the living water, but at times we are stuck withdrawing water for our own material needs, losing sight and tasteof the living water. Effectiveness is doing the right thing. Why doyou look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but hasrisen. (Luke 24:5-6). May our Besrauma experience lead us forhigher values and goals in life!

The Church and the society have greater expectations from CMIs.But are we ready?

The world is in desperate need of resurrection. There is so muchdespair that needs to be offered hope, so much division and hate thatneeds reconciliation, so much death that needs to be called out of thetomb. There is an urgent need to heal the deep wounds caused by theconflicts within and outside the community. The risen Christ isjourneying ahead of us towards the new heavens and the new earth(cf. Rev 21:1). He is with us until the end of time. Let us walk behindhim, in this wounded world, singing Alleluia, with our gaze fixed onheaven.

Jesus is risen! Alleluia! Happy Easter to all of you!

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am pleased to join you in giving thanks to the Lord for thecanonization of two new Indian saints , both from the State ofKerala. I take this opportunity to thank the Church in India, theChurch in Kerala, for all its apostolic vigour and for your witnessto the Faith! My heartfelt gratitude! Keep up the good work!Kerala is rich in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.Continue on this path, working through your witness. I thankCardinal George Alencherry, the Bishops, priests, men andwomen religious, and each of you, dear brothers and sisters ofthe Syro-Malabar rite. You have come to Rome in great numberson this very important occasion, and have been able to live daysof faith and ecclesial communion, praying also at the tombs ofthe Apostles. May this time of celebration and intense spiritualityhelp you to contemplate the marvellous works accomplished bythe Lord in the lives and deeds of these new saints.

Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister EuphrasiaEluvathingal, who was a member of the religious Institutefounded by him, remind each of us that God’s love is the source, the support and the goal of all holiness, while love of neighbouris the clearest manifestation of love for God. Father KuriakoseElias was a religious, both active and contemplative, whogenerously gave his life for the Syro-Malabar Church, putting

into action the maxim “sanctification of oneself and the salvationof others”. For her part, Sister Euphrasia lived in profound unionwith God so much so that her life of holiness was an exampleand an encouragement to the people, who called her “PrayingMother”. There are many consecrated religious here today, especially consecrated women. May you also may be known as“Praying Sisters”.

Dear brothers and sisters, may these new saints help you totreasure their lessons of evangelical living. Follow in theirfootsteps and imitate them, in a particular way, through love ofJesus in the Eucharist and love of the Church. Thus you willadvance along the path to holiness. With this hope and theassurance of my prayers, I impart to each of you and to all yourloved ones my Apostolic Blessing. Thank you!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at the

National Celebration of the Elevation toSainthood of Kuriakose Elias Chavara and

Mother Euphrasia

I am delighted to participate in this function to celebrate theelevation to sainthood of two great saints of Kerala - Saint KuriakoseElias Chavara and Saint Euphresia. The whole country is proud oftheir recognition. Their elevation was preceded by that of SaintAlphonsa, who also hailed from Kerala.

The life and deeds of Saint Chavara and Saint Euphresia are aninspiration not only to the Christian community, but to humanity as awhole. They are shining examples of dedication to God throughselfless service for the betterment of mankind.

Saint Chavara was a man of prayer and also a social reformer. Inan era when access to education was limited, he stressed that everychurch should have a school. He thus opened the doors of educationto people from all sections of society.

Few outside Kerala know that he started a Sanskrit school, andalso a printing press. His contribution towards women’s empowermentwas also noteworthy.

Saint Euphrasia was a mystic who dedicated her life to prayer anddevotion to God.

Both these saints dedicated their life to God through service offellow beings. The ancient Indian saying: “Athmano MokshadharmJagath Hithayaja” – welfare of the world is the way to moksha(salvation) – explains their life.

Friends,

Spiritualism is rooted in India’s heritage. Indian saints and Greeksages had intellectual and spiritual exchanges thousands of years back.India’s openness to new ideas is manifest in the Rig Veda: Ano Bhadra

Krithavo Yenthu Viswath Let noble thoughts come to us from all sides. This philosophy has guided our intellectual discourse since timeimmemorial. Mother India gave birth to many religious and spiritualstreams. Some of them have even travelled beyond Indian borders.

The tradition of welcoming, respecting and honouring all faiths isas old as India itself. As Swami Vivekananda said: We believe notonly in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true.

What Swami Vivekananda had said a century ago holds good andwill, for ever, not only for this nation but also for this government orfor that matter any government in India, run by any political party. This principle of equal respect and treatment for all faiths has been apart of India’s ethos for thousands of years. And that is how it becameintegral to the Constitution of India. Our Constitution did not evolvein a vacuum. It has roots in the ancient cultural traditions of India.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore had inspired us to dream of a landwhere the mind is without fear and the head is held high. It is thatheaven of freedom we are duty bound to create and preserve. Webelieve that there is truth in every religion. Ekam Sath Vipr BahuthaVadanthi

Friends,

Let me now come to the issue which is central and critical forpeace and harmony in the contemporary world. The world isincreasingly witnessing division and hostility on religious lines. Thishas become a matter of global concern. In this context the ancientIndian plea of mutual respect for all faiths is now beginning to manifestin global discourse.

This long felt need and urge for mutually respectful relations ledto the interfaith conference on ‘Faith in Human Rights’ at the Hagueon tenth December, 2008. This was coincidentally also the 60thAnniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by theUnited Nations.

Religious leaders representing every major world religion -Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Baha’i Faith, Buddhism, Islam,

Taoism and indigenous religions met, discussed and pledged to upholdthe Universal Declaration and of freedom of religion or belief.

In their historic declaration, they defined what constitutes freedomof faith and how it is to be safeguarded.

We consider the freedom to have, to retain, and to adopt, a religionor belief, is a personal choice of a citizen.

The world is at cross roads which, if not crossed properly, canthrow us back to the dark days of bigotry, fanaticism and bloodshed. This harmonious convergence among religions could not be achievedeven when the world entered the third millennium. And now it hasbeen. This shows that the rest of the world too is evolving along thelines of ancient India.

Speaking for India, and for my government, I declare that mygovernment stands by every word of the above declaration. Mygovernment will ensure that there is complete freedom of faith andthat everyone has the undeniable right to retain or adopt the religionof his or her choice without coercion or undue influence. Mygovernment will not allow any religious group, belonging to themajority or the minority, to incite hatred against others, overtly orcovertly. Mine will be a government that gives equal respect to allreligions.

India is the land of Buddha and Gandhi. Equal respect for allreligions must be in the DNA of every Indian. We cannot acceptviolence against any religion on any pretext and I strongly condemnsuch violence. My government will act strongly in this regard.

With this commitment, I appeal to all religious groups to act withrestraint, mutual respect, and tolerance in the true spirit of this ancientnation which is manifest in our Constitution and is in line with theHague Declaration.

Friends,

I have a vision of a Modern India. I have embarked on a hugemission to convert that vision into reality. My mantra is Development– Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas

In simple terms it means food on every table, every child in school,a job for everybody and a house with toilet and electricity for everyfamily. This will make India proud. We can achieve this through unity.Unity strengthens us. Division weakens us. I sincerely request allIndians, and all of you present here to support me in this huge task.

Let the elevation to sainthood of Saint Chavara and SaintEuphrasia, and their noble deeds inspire us:

-to maximize our inner strength-to use that strength for transforming society through selfless

service-to fulfil our collective vision of a developed and modern India.

Today is given by the Lord to give thanks to God for his giftof two Great saints to the church and in a very special way toSyro-Malabar church. Let us be glad and rejoice in it with all itsmembers of the church and with a very special reference to ourCMI and CMC members. It is a joy for them to celebrate theirfounder as saint and also a daughter of the congregation foundedby him as a saint. With Blessed Virgin Mary we can also sing themagnificat, ‘The mighty one has done great things for us; Holybe thy name.

‘Our church is barren’ deplored saint Kuriakose Chavara in1860’s, alluding to the absence of saints in it. He himself made itfruitful by becoming a saint. Today this church is blessed withthree saints and about 20 other saintly persons who are in differentstages of the process of canonization. It is indeed a great momentfor the Indian church and especially, for the Syro-Malabar church, which has lived through the vicissitudes of ecclesial life in itsevolution to become the second largest Oriental Church. Its lifeand development is a reflection of the dynamism of the cross:suffering, rejection, denial, and final glory , the glory of theresurrection.

The greatest service Saint Chavara rendered to his people wasnot that he authored many pioneering feats for them on

educational and social fronts, in print media, literature and whatnot. But it was that he led the people to a radical deepening offaith. Saint Thomas Christians had over centuries settled downto a frozen existence, passive Christian life and culture on accountof several historical social factors. They had to be thoroughlyawakened to the core of their Christian faith received from StThomas the Apostle. His lived in experience of the HolyEucharist, Protecting power of the Holy Family, His SpecialCharism received through our Lady of the Mount Carmel, andthe mystical dimensions of the Carmalite traditions convincedhim beyond doubt that what one needed to do most in suchjuncture was to help one’s people and church undergo a radicalrebirth in their faith through a full-fledged spiritual and pastoralrenewal. His founding of CMI and CMC congregations has senseand makes sense only in this connection. He tirelessly worked torevitalize his church lock, stock and barrel. As a prophet sent byGod, he had to undergo the fate of the prophet, the rejectionfrom the authority and mental sufferings to its brim. All thepioneering works he did in several areas, such as startingeducational, social and spiritual were only part of his propheticmission of awakening and empowering an ancient church andpeople in general. The vibrant and flourishing Saint ThomasCatholic Community in India, ever since Chavara’s ministry abouttwo centuries ago to our times today, speaks volumes, not onlyabout the thoroughness of the faith renewal he effected in histime, but also about the in-built on going mechanism of self-renewal of the faith in it. The dynamics of the renewal heaccomplished in the church are still continuing realities in historyuntil now. It was because of this reason that Saint ThomasCatholic community increasingly become a mission orientedchurch, producing an abundance of priestly and religiousvocations and sending , in comparison to with any other church, the largest number of missionaries to different dioceses in India

and the entire world. Thus, if the Syro Malabar church hasassumed today, not only an all India dimension, but also, a worldstatus, this breakthrough has to historically traced to its sourceand inspiration, Saint Chavara who led through a process ofrebirth by his own life and mission. For this reason, after SaintThomas, more than anybody else, he deserves to be called theFather of the Syro- Malabar Church. Like Saint John 23rd, wecan say that saint Chavara started a second Vatican council in theSyro-Malabar Church.

Saint Euphresia, the daughter of the CMC congregation is thebest example of the excellent result of Chavara’s life andspirituality. Her prayer life and mystical bend for the union withGod, the Eucharistic devotion, an identification with the CrucifiedChrist, Her devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus, Her Mariandevotion through Rosary, her love for the neighbour and her lovefor the Church and its authorities proved beyond doubt that shewas following the spirituality of its founder and the Carmelitemystical traditions of the congregation. Though very simple andextremely humble in life, she aspired to climb up very peaks ofdivine regions and go down into depths and wide expanse ofhuman situations to spread love, light and peace around her. Herjourney from her house at Kattor to Ollur via Koonammau andAmbazhakkad is very short but spiritual journey of her saintlylife goes to the whole world and becomes a model for us to follow.

Saint Euphresia was a ‘Praying Mother’. That is the best noteof her life. She tried to perceive her prayer life and intimacywith God at the cost of everything else. She risked the riches, comforts, pleasures, name and fame. Purifying the motives ofher actions she led a transparent life till the end, which was aceaseless spiritual combat. Eupharsia won it marvellously well.In other words, Christ triumphed in her. She was obedient to theconstitution of her congregation and to the laws of the church.

She loved the poor and down trodden. She was a constant friendof Jesus in the Eucharist. Every other friendship was subsidiaryto her. Spending her leisure hours near the Eucharistic Presence, she was called variously as the guardian of the tabernacle ‘MobileTabernacle’ Eucharistic Euphresia, and Eucharistic Soul. She wasthe spouse of the Crucified. She loved church and was a truedaughter of the Church. Empowered with the gifts of the HolySpirit she was able to guide the sisters, the novices and whoevercame to her for discernment. People who felt the fragrance ofher holiness crowed to her with their prayer requests. She was anexemplary religious and model for a virtuous life. Her own sistersconsidered her as an example in living a chaste, obedient andchaste life.

Saint Euphresia is a true spiritual daughter of Saint Chavara, who dreamt of a holy Church. Even saint Alphonsa and BlessedMariam Thresia and other saintly souls in the horizon of Syro-Malabar Church could be tangentially perceived as the fulfilmentof Chavara’s dream. At the same time, the uniqueness of eachsaint amazes us. Even in the case of saint Euphresia whileparticipating in the founder’s charism in a steady and obviousway the accent mainly falls on the contemplative and mystical, while Saint Chavara is termed by the illustrious leaders of theIndia as ‘the Acharaya of Prayer’ , an ‘Engine of Activity’ andFather of the Malabar Church. God raises His saints with aparticular uniqueness with a mission and a vision. They are sounique that like every dawn they, a marvel to all. Their life, vocation and mission are a challenge to us. They compel us tofollow the paths of simplicity, prayer life and dedication. Letthe mystic Mother Euphresia and Active Father Chavara intercedefor us in our priestly, religious and family life.

The Devil is not afraid to preach the will of God provided he canpreach it in his on way.” Thomas Merton (The Moral Theology of theDevil-‘Seeds of Contemplation’)

“Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light” (2Cor 11:14)

In Jewish tradition Satan transforms himself into a shining angelin order to seduce Eve. According to the moral theology of the Devil:

1. The Future of CMI Congregation is bleak; the Devil provokes themembers to be the ‘prophets of doom.’

But in the year of consecrated life, we are asked to embrace thefuture with hope. “The pain and shame we feel at the sins of .somemembers of the church, and at-our own, must never make us. forgethow many Christians are giving their lives in love.” (The Joy ofthe Gospel No: 76)

You have not only a glorious history to remember and recount, butalso a great history still to be accomplished. Look to the future, where the Spirit is sending you in order to do even greater thing.(Vita Consecrata No: 110)

Put your hope in the Lord, be strong, let your hearts be bold. (Ps27:14)

My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is strongest when weare weak. (2 Cor 12:9)

2. The Devil tries to convince us that ‘we need success by worldlystandards and not apostolic success’; The goal justifies the means;the society appreciates the cult of efficiency, fitness, and success.

“The Moral Theology of the Devil”Fr. Mathai Kulampally , Provincial

Page 32: I¿sΩektµiwcmi.org.in/IssuePdf/30_ID_March2015_Carmelasandesam.pdf · come out with their responses to this statement including Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. The

A Social life full of appearances, dinners, meetings and receptionsis a sign of spiritual worldliness (Pope Francis)

Celebrations without deliberations are nothing but spiritualworldliness. They provoke hatred, enmity and jealousy. Ourapostolic effectiveness does not depend on the efficiency of itsmethods, it depends on the eloquence of our lives.

Jesus did not tell the apostles to form an exclusive and elite groups; He said ‘ Go and make disciples of all nations. (Mt 28:19)

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your goodworks and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Mt 5:16)

The early Christians were one in mind and heart. (Acts;i4:32) Bysuch a unity, they earned the good will of the people. It was thereal apostolic success.

3. “Where there are religious, there is sadness, tension, mistrust andfrustration.”

The Devil stimulates the religious to develop a ‘tomb psychology’.

The sad and frustrated religious are following the moral theologyof the Devil.

Only a contented religious can radiate happiness. ‘Where thereare religious there is joy.’ If there is no joy in the community, itcan not be called a religious community. It is only an N.G.O.

“However numerous the monasteries are all must be like themembers of one family, children born to, nursed and brought upby the same mother”. (St. Chavara) Such communities wouldexperience heavenly bliss here and now.

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice”. (Phil 4:4)

4. The Devil says ‘part is more important than the whole’; you areindispensable; strive for the individualistic excellence.

Such a religious avoids community. For him community will be a‘Gas Chamber’. In community he is like a fish out of water. Incommunity he experiences ‘Paradise Lost’. Away from community,he enjoys ‘Paradise Regained’.

Jesus said; “I pray that they all be one”. (Jn 17:21)

“They must love the solitude of their room and remain in it as faras possible without aimlessly roaming here and there”. (St.Chavara)

5. The Devil tells us; “Education is for the privileged and not for theunprivileged; the elite will appreciate you and reward you”.Manyreligious are trapped by the Devil.

“Several upper caste Catholics claim their brahminic ancestry...they have huge properties and businesses. They are the ones whoestablished world class English medium schools and colleges andeducate the children of top five percent of Indian rich and uppercastes in their schools and colleges.”(Kancha Ilaiah-DeccanChronicle 5-1-2015) The Jesuits, pioneers in education in India, realized the folly and took corrective measures.

Jesus said; “I will pay for the rewardless service” (Lk 14:14).

In his ministries he had special concern for the Samaritans and themarginalized.

The beneficiaries of St. Chavara’s educational apostolate weremostly the under privileged.

‘Watchful scrutiny of the signs of the times’ urges us to takecorrective measures in the educational apostolates without delay.

6. The Devil encourages, us to be self-righteous and complacent;Since you are very efficient and expert in many fields asking theopinion of others is mere waste of time; would slow down thegrowth of your institution and lower your status.

But even Jesus asked the unlearned disciples, “Who do people saythe Son of Man is?, Who do you say that I am?”(Mt 16:13-15)

Do we ask the ordinary people what their opinion is about us?

Often we lend our ears to those who glorify us? “It is the sicknessof those who court their superiors, hoping for their benevolence”(Pope Francis)

7. “Prayer is for the disabled, forgiveness is for the weak”; the deviladvises us, “To succeed in life, you should be a workaholic; since

Page 34: I¿sΩektµiwcmi.org.in/IssuePdf/30_ID_March2015_Carmelasandesam.pdf · come out with their responses to this statement including Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. The

work is worship you need not waste your valuable time for prayer;Regard Salvation of all, Disregard Sanctification of Self; sinceyou are omniscient, you are always right. Asking forgiveness wouldmake you inferior to others. So never use the terms ‘Thank you’and “Sorry”.

But the example Of Jesus is just the contrary.

“The news about Jesus spread all the more widely, and crowds ofpeople came to hear Him and be healed from their deseases. Buthe would go away to lonely places where He prayed” (Lk 5:15,16)He prayed to the Father on our behalf; “Forgive them, Father”(Lk23:34)

It is not his great social, educational and religious reforms ornumerous institutions that made Chavara a saint, but his personalholiness.

St. Chavara’s success, in all his many undertakings wasundoubtedly due to the intense charity and prayer, whichcharacterized his daily life, his close communication with Christ, and his love for the church as the Visible body of Christ on earth(St. Pope John Paul II)

8. “Ar gue for the poor, align with the rich”; the devil persuades thereligious to align with the rich. To speak for the down-trodden isthe popular trend today; so argue for them but don’t identify withthem.

“But Christ, though he was rich, for your sake became poor, sothat by his poverty you might become rich” (2 cor 8:9).

“Isn’t Mary his mother, aren’t James, Joseph, Simon and Judas hisbrothers. Aren’t his sisters living here? (Mt 13:54-57)

Christ emptied himself taking the form of slave (Phil 2:6-8)

Our Lord demands not only poverty in spirit, but in action too.Like our Master we are bound to identify with the marginalized.

9. “Christian Joy means frivolous pleasures”; the devil reminds usthat we could only be happy if a thousand conditions are met; the

Page 35: I¿sΩektµiwcmi.org.in/IssuePdf/30_ID_March2015_Carmelasandesam.pdf · come out with their responses to this statement including Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi. The

feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures makes us happy; for meetingthe pleasures, spend your time, energy and much money, whichthe middle class person cannot even imagine. As a result, a bluntedconscience is formed. It won’t disturb you any more.

But joy is not the gratification of vile pleasures. It is the experienceof the gratitude of being glad for life in the presence of the Giverof Life. Whenever we feel within that life is good and return thegift of thanks, joy has entered into life.

“God’s kingdom is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of therighteousness, peace and joy which the Holy Spirit gives.” (Rom14:17)

People should not be too concerned about physical comfort andwell being. It is not proper to run after vain pleasures, brood overthe slightest sickness or grieve and complain about silly matters(St.Chavara)

10.“Lack of money is the root cause of discontentment. The devilinduces all to worship the ‘new idol’ called money; he tries toconvince the religious that worship of the golden calf is the modemtrend. To make that calf you have to forgo prayer, meditation andother ‘outdated religious values’. Your happiness would beaccording to the size of the golden calf. Bigger the calf, greaterthe happiness.

But Jesus says; “You can not serve God and money (Mt 6:24)

If we have food and clothing we will be content with this. Thelove of money is the root of all kinds of evil (1 Tim 6:10)

St. Chavara strictly forbade, all members from getting involved inthe money matters and disputes.

The strength of monasteries does not consist in the thickness ofthe wall but in the religious zeal and virtue of their inmates. (St.Chavara)

“Put on all the armour that God gives you, so that you will be ableto stand up against the Devil’s, evil tricks”(Eph 6:11).

For them the source in Syriac language werenot very helpful either. Fr. Plalackal’s enquiries revealed that somesuch works were translated by the Jesuits into Tamil and a fewinto Malayalam. Krupalji Tumane, MP, Ramtek, Shree Sunilbabu Kedar,MLA,Savoner-Klameshwar, Mrs. Vidyathai, President of Nagarparishad,Kalmeshwar and a large public. The life and social reformation thatChavara did during his life time was rememebred during this program.Rev. Fr. St.Chavara lived long before Jyotiba Fule and Savitribai Fule andmany reformers like them in Maharashtra, who are remebered fortheir contributions for girls education but Chavara was the pioneer inthis field. He started the first Sankrit school in Kerala which gave anopertunity for Harijans, poor and rich alike. We must remebr he livedin 19th centuary when the cast system was practiced in its full strength. He was truly Bhakti-Karma-Yogi.

Mary Matha Vice-Province, on 2nd January 2015 at CMI ProvincialHouse Bellamaplli followed by the Eucharistic celebration inProvincial House chapel Bellampalli. Fr Antony Moozhikuzhy CMIpreached the funeral homily.

Fr. Joseph Cyprian was bom on 03rd October 1934 in theThulumpanmackal family as the fourth of the seven children of lateMr. Thomas and Theresa. His native parish is Mozhoor in the Dioceseof Palai. He joined St. Joseph’s Monastery, Mannanam as an aspirantand completed his novitiate at Karkutty. He made his first professionof Religious Vows on 16 May 1957 and Ordained Priest on 17th May1963.

Rev. Fr. Joseph Cyprian’s long stint as a zealous missionary startedfrom 1965 at Vijayanagaram, continued in Repalliwada, Bheemaram,Sirpur Kagaznagar, Bellamaplli, Indervelli, Anudhavana-Mancherial,Nifmal, Kamareddy and ended at CMI provincial House Bellamaplli.“The shepherd goes ahead of his sheep and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice”, (Jn 10:4) Fr. Joseph Cyprian knew hissheep and they knew him. He was willing to die for his sheep. Thepresence of so many faithful to the burial testify to his fruitful missionwork.

Fr. Joseph Cyprian is very dear to us because, there was no deceitin Him: When Jesus saw Nathaniel coming to him, he said about him,‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there in no deceit’ (Jn 1:47). Thesewords of Our Lord are true to him. No comparison with others: Henever competed with others, did not compare with others. “He humbledhimself. God made him great” (Lk 18:14). Did not Judge others: Henever judged others, so that God will not Judge him (Mt 7:1). Did notslander: ‘He will inherit the kingdom of God, because he did notslander with his tongue, did no evil to his friends, did not take upreproach against his neighbours. (Ps 15:3) Actions speak louder thanwords: Jesus answered the disciples of John, “Tell john what you arehearing and seeing.” (Mt 11:14) The mission centres and the Christianfaithful formed by Fr. Joseph Cyprian are the living monuments ofhis missionary endeavor. True Shepherd: as an evangelizer, he had

the ‘smell of the sheep’ and never entered the ‘comfort zone’. (Jn10:10) Man of contentment: He did not store up for himself treasureson earth, but stored up treasures in heaven (Mt 6:19,20). Radiated thejoy of evangelization: By tedious walk, long journeys on bullock cartsto remote villages, he radiated the joy of Good News to people. Whata satiating life! ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring GoodNews.’ (Rom 10:15) Apostolic Success: Today all exalt the cult ofefficiency and success. But Fr, Joseph Cyprian’s apostoliceffectiveness did not depend on the efficiency of its methods but onthe eloquence of his life. (Mt 5:16) Rewardless Service: He servedthose who were not able to pay him back - God will repay him on theday of Judgment (Lk 14:14).
