Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR CASTOR OIL
(Second Revision)
o. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard (Second Revisior, ) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 17 August 1973, after the draft finalized by theOils and Oilseeds Sectional Committee had been approved by theChemical Division Council and the Agricultural and Food ProductsDivision Council. .
0.2 This standard was first published in 1954 and subsequently revisedin 1966. An Amendment No. 1 to the first revision was Issuedin November 1969 in order to bring the medicinal grade castor oil in linewith the requirements of the pharmaceutical grade prescribed in theIndian Pharmacopoeia. Later, some more comments had been receivedand their consideration has led to second revision of this standard. Inthis revision the requirement for ash content has been deleted as it wasconsidered not to serve any purpose. Furthermore the lim,its for themoisture and volatile matter content of the medicinal grade of castor oilhave been raised in view of the actual experience. The physicaldescription of firsts and commercial grades have also been modified.
0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a teat or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS: 2-1960·. The number of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified valuein this atandard.
1. ICOPE
1.1 This standard prescribes requirements and methods of sampling andteat for castor oil. .
2. TERMINOLOGY

APPENDIX A( Claw, 4.2.2 )
DETERMINATION OF TURBIDITY ON SIUCA SCALE
A-I. TERMINOLOGYA-I.I For the purpose of this test, the following definition shall apply.
A-I.I.I Silica Scale Unit-Turbidity imparted by 1 mg of fullen'earth when suspended in I 000 ml of distilled water.
A-2. ~REPARATION OF TURBIDITY STANDARDSA-2.1 Mix slowly with constant stirring 5-000 g of fullers' earth, previously dried and sieved through 7S-micron IS Sieve (SI' 18:4601962*), with distilled water and dilute it to 1000 mi. Agitateintermittently for one hour and then allow to stand for 24 hour••Withdraw the supernatant liquid without disturbing the sediment.Evaporate about 50 ml of the removed liquid, dry the residue at105=2°C and weigh the residue to determine the amount of clay insuspension. Prepare turbidity standards with this standardized stocksuspension with distilled water. A drop of saturated mercuric chloridesolution may be added as preservative. The standards are stable for3 months.
A-3. PROCEDURE
A-3.1 Pour the sample after thorough shaking into a clear glasa bottle ofsuitable capacity, say, one litre. Compare it with the turbidity standardscontained in similar bottles, holding them against a suitable backgroundand using a source of light which illuminates them equally and is placedso that no rays reach the eye directly. The sample and the standardsshall be shaken simultaneously immediately before comparison.
A-S.1.1 Repor! - Record the turbidity readings in the range 1 to 10to the nearest unit and in the range 11 to 100 to the nearest 5 units.
APPENDIX B[T .able 1, Item (iv)]
DETERMINATION OF CRITICAL SOLUTION TEMPERATVRB
8-1. REAGENT
"J.1 The reagent shall be prepared by diluting ethyl alcohol ( conforminato IS: 321-1964t) or rectified spirit (conforming to IS: 323·1959~) with

distilled water till the relative density of the mixture at IS-5°C is0-8303 :I: 0·000 1, when compared with distilled water at the sametemperature. Denatured alcohol shall not be used for this test.
B-2. PROCEDURE
8-2.1 Mix in a test tube 1·0 g of the material with 4-15 times its mass ofthe reagent. On examination the solution thus obtained shall be perfectlyclear at 20°0 and shall remain clear when cooled and maintained for5 minutes at a temperature of aoe.
APPENDIX C[T'ebl« I, Item (xi)]
DETERMINATION OF OPTICAL ROTATION
C-l. OUTLINE OF THE METHOD
c-l.l For the purpose of this determination, the optical rotation is takenas the angle in degrees through which the plane of polarization is turnedwhen plane-polarized sodium light is passed through a layer of oil,100 mm in thickness-
e-2.PROCEDtlRE0-2.1 Carry out the determination in a dark room, using monochromaticsodium light- Any recognized type of polarimeter may be used. As faras possible, make the determination using lOO-mm tubes. The temperaturefor determination shall.be 25 :I: ~C.
Ca2.2 Take at least three readings which should agree to within 0·08 deg,
c-3. EXPRESSION OF RESULT
c-3.1 Round off the average of the three readings to the fint decimalplace and express it as the optical rotation.
