  • The world of the 21st century calls for people who can think creatively, solve problems, and understand the multiple perspectives of our fellow citizens. Because of our isolated location in the South Pacific, New Zealanders have traditionally been curious and fascinated about life beyond our shores. IPU New Zealand provides a tertiary education

that dramatically expands the horizons of our New Zealand students. They share classes and live with fellow students from over 20 different countries; their studies are interdisciplinary in nature; and they are prepared for the wide world of tomorrow.

Live and work overseasMany young New Zealanders want to live and work overseas, and the countries of the South Pacific Rim are becoming increasingly popular. IPU New Zealand’s graduates can be found all around the world, in the fields of hospitality and tourism, business and commerce, international relations, and in many multinational companies, government agencies, NGOs and educational institutions.

Learn valuable skillsThe young men and women who pass through our programmes have acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to participate effectively in their own or other countries. Most gain considerable skill in foreign languages and deep understanding of other cultures.

Make international connectionsOur institute has a family feel, and our students develop a strong international outlook. In class, outside class, and in extra-curricular activities, you will learn about other cultures, make international connections and develop career opportunities for the years ahead. As a student at IPU New Zealand, you will be moving along the road to success. IPU New Zealand will challenge and guide you towards your goal of playing a part in the world of tomorrow.

ANDREW BECKER“IPU New Zealand gave me the skills and base of contacts to build an export business throughout the Asia-Pacific region. I use skills gained at IPU New Zealand on a daily basis in a field that is very diverse and challenging. Building a rapidly growing business requires a unique skill set, which I gained at IPU New Zealand. The Japanese I learned on campus gave me a huge advantage in Japan, without this I would not be where I am today! Finally, the lifestyle at IPU New Zealand is great – for me it was a combination of study, sports, personal development, a comfortable campus life, and having a lot of fun!”

JUSTIN STAFFORD“IPU New Zealand opened the door for me to work internationally and I will never forget them. I am working in Japan now and have plans to travel to other parts of the world to teach English and to bring all these rich experiences back to share with other young New Zealanders. If you want to take that big step into the world and discover all the richness of an international experience, you only have to take that little step into IPU New Zealand.”

PETER MERRIGAN“Over the three years at IPU New Zealand, I enjoyed all of my classes. I made life-long friends, joined many sports/cultural groups, and involved myself in various festivals and events. IPU New Zealand provided me with the knowledge and people skills that have made me successful in my previous business and education career in Tokyo, and my current role within the Department of Internal Affairs in Wellington. Looking back, I can say, without a doubt, that deciding to study at IPU New Zealand was the best decision I have ever made.”

SHELLEY HASTINGS“I currently work as an English teacher and English content creator, which involves translation, editing and writing work. My Japanese classes at IPU really helped me hone my language skills to a level where I am able to do translation work and the teaching papers and TESOL course I took through IPU have been invaluable in terms of giving me the confidence and skills to be a good teacher.”

  • Today it is no longer practical to focus on a single subject area in tertiary study. Instead, graduates with a wide range of knowledge, perspectives, and practical problem-solving skills are in demand. The world economy revolves around business and politics, and at IPU New Zealand we consider these points from international business, international relations, and environmental perspectives. In order to develop young people into leaders of the future, we don’t teach with a narrow focus; instead, we create an environment where students evolve into individuals with versatile skills and knowledge and strong communication skills.

    QUALITY ASSURED EDUCATION

    DEDICATED EDUCATORS INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

In June 2015, IPU New Zealand Tertiary Institute was awarded a Category 1 rating of “Highly Confident” in the two criteria of educational performance and self-assessment by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

IPU New Zealand faculty members are carefully chosen educational professionals as well as active researchers in the fields of business, international relations, environment and languages. They all have practical experience beyond theory-based learning; some have professional and/or research experience overseas, and others speak more than three languages. The academic staff of IPU New Zealand work as a group of international teachers, totally dedicated to the education of students in the age of globalisation. At IPU New Zealand, it is not only regular academic staff members who teach. Guest speakers are often invited to give lectures to students. Members of Parliament, ambassadors, diplomats, researchers and even actors have visitedIPU New Zealand to speak to students and help broaden their intellectual horizons.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMESA fully NZQA-accredited tertiary institution, IPU New Zealand offers undergraduate diplomas, a bachelor’s degree, graduate diploma, postgraduate diploma, and a master’s degree - all designed to build your international career. IPU New Zealand’s qualifications are internationally recognised, carrying the same status as those conferred by publicly funded universities.

In this interdisciplinary programme you have the opportunity to study in the key areas of: International Business, International Relations, Japanese Studies, Language Studies, and Environmental Studies.

You can also expand your core skills through the study of Japanese and Mandarin languages and cultures, in addition to acquiring a variety of research and critical analysis skills, all geared towards guaranteeing your success both in New Zealand and internationally. • WELCOME Welcome to Palmerston North, the city of students. It is my privilege to welcome you here on behalf of the city.Palmerston North is home to people from more than 100 different countries. IPU New Zealand is one of the key reasons why our city is becoming more multicultural. It is very fortunate for IPU New Zealand students that IPU New Zealand has received international recognition for its contribution to international education, and that the IPU New Zealand staff are held in high esteem in the educational sector. Our city values multiculturalism. Participation is the key to enjoyment and acceptance. Offering your hand to others; asking if you can join a sport or a club; turning up to support friends; these are key to understanding each other and key to creating a better city.

Grant SmithThe Mayor of Palmerston North

IPU New Zealand is located on the outskirts of Palmerston North. With students from over 60 different countries attending one of the several tertiary institutions in town, the city is often referred to as Student CityThe city centre is a students’ haven, with a variety of restaurants, cafes, shopping, and boutique retail shops. Many people participate at the city’s diverse cultural events, take part in social and community activities, join local sporting clubs, and enjoy shows, numerous walking and bicycle tracks and exhibitions. Frequent buses, the local airport, and Palmerston North’s central location make it easy to get around and see the rest of the country.

The history of IPU New ZealandOur tertiary institute was conceptualised in 1987, when Hiroshi Ohashi, the Chairman of the Board

of Trustees and other experts in the educational field across the Pacific-Rim nations assembled and discussed ‘an ideal model for an innovative approach to tertiary education in the 21st century’.

Dr Kay Andersen, former Executive Director of WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges, USA)[1] was appointed as Director and supported Chairman Ohashi to lead the discussion. Dr Anderson’s expertise in

tertiary education and governmental approval procedures made a significant contribution to the project.

Professor Emeritus Herbert Passin, from Columbia University, also joined the project. His inexhaustible knowledge of tertiary education and the societies of the USA and Japan propelled the project forward.

The discussion continued over a year and a half, delivering a new plan for establishing a tertiary educational system with a consortium of campuses in Pacific-Rim nations, where credits would be transferrable and students could obtain a degree at any campus when all credits required for graduation were complete.

Our tertiary institute - known for 25 years until 2015 as International Pacific College (IPC Tertiary Institute) - was established as the first campus in 1990, the year of the 150th anniversary of New

Zealand. Criteria for this establishment as envisaged by Chairman Ohashi included:

    1. The campus must be developed in an environment where students’ lives, assets and safety would be guaranteed.

    2. The host country of the campus must offer globally competitive tertiary education.

    3. An ideal, clean natural environment should be readily available around the campus for students to enjoy their collegiate life.

Our institute has successfully supported New Zealand students as well as international students living in New Zealand and away from their home countries, as well as domestic students for 25 years. Today, students from some two dozen countries live and study on our campus in Palmerston North while we

have cooperative links with many tertiary institutions and secondary schools throughout Asia.

A second campus opened in 2007 in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The International Pacific University, whose philosophy is to combine pedagogy, teacher education and physical education, has become

a leading university in Chugoku region in Japan in the few years since its establishment.

The Japanese government recently approved IPU Japan to launch its new Bachelor of Contemporary Business Management in April 2016. These developments will enable exchange of students

and faculty between the two campuses, which was the vision stated at the outset. In September 2015 we became known as the Institute of the Pacific United New Zealand (IPU New Zealand). This name

is more clearly indicative of the extent of our reach and linkages from New Zealand across the Pacific and into Asia.

Preparations are under way for establishing a third international campus. As the first campus and the central hub of the strategic plan, IPU New Zealand will continue developing itself as a

unique tertiary institute in the Pacific-Rim nations, with its strong focus on Asia.

[1] WASC is one of the official academic bodies in the USA responsible for the accreditation of public and private universities, colleges, secondary and elementary schools.
