How are humans contributing to climate change?

• The levels of greenhouse gases (CO2, methane) have increased in the atmosphere– Burning of fossil fuels– Deforestation– Livestock farming

How are humans contributing to climate change?

• Data for the past 400,000 years shows a clear correlation between atmospheric CO2 levels and global temperature.

• The current levels of CO2 are unprecedented and continue to rise, along with temperature.

The impacts have begun…

• The WHO estimates more than 150,000 deaths and 5 million “disability adjusted life years” (DALYs) occur EACH YEAR due to the diseases and malnutrition caused by climate change.

• WHO-estimated annual deaths are estimated to double by 2030.

Global Environmental Justice?

Developed nations are responsible for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions… however, developing nations will experience greater impact from climate change.

United States:

3% world’s population

~30% total emissions
