INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS OFFICE (IPO):International Programs Office is responsible for assisting incoming international students and scholars with the admissions and student visa processes, managing orientation and retention programsaimedatinternationalstudentsuccess,andorganizingprogramsto‘internationalize’thecampus (including managing the international Study Abroad programs). IPO is the campus office that assists all students, scholars and faculty (and their dependents) who hold an immigration status of F-1, J-1, or H-1B with any visa status question or concern. In addition, IPO manages the international recruitment plan for the university, and advises other university offices in hiring foreign scholars and faculty. LIBRARY FACILITIESISU’s Eli M. Oboler Library provides access to great resources and services. The library collections currently consist of more than three million items of different types (books, periodicals, maps, journals, government documents, etc.), with nearly half a million books in the main collection. The library and its staff are invaluable to ISU students in research in many ways, including the

interlibrary loan system through which ISU students have access to items available at other participating libraries.

STUDENT HEALTH CENTERThe ISU Student Health Center employs a friendly, professional medical staff to provide students with high-quality, low-cost health care while they are attending ISU. The Student Health Center offers “same day” morning appointments as well as advance appointments for special procedures. A walk-in clinic is also available. The Student Health Center also provides pharmaceutical services to students. Other services available are routine X-rays, laboratory studies, nutrition and healthy lifestyle counseling, and women’s and men’s health clinics. At ISU all international students are required to have acceptable health (medical) insurance. ACADEMIC ADVISING (AAC)Undergraduate international students are advised by faculty in their academic departments. Assigned faculty advisors help the student select the best course schedule, including degree requirements and elective classes. ISU degrees, like those at most American universities, have a wide variety of course choices available, and the advisor helps the advisee make the course choices that best suit their academic, professional and personal goals. Additionally, the Academic Advising Center serves as a general advising resource for all students. New undergraduate students should complete the online orientation to ISU academics and registration, at www.isu.edu/advising/madvising.shtml. Advising for graduate students is also done through their academic departments, with a faculty advisor.

CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING (CETL)The Center for Teaching and Learning offers free individual and small-group tutoring in math, writing, and content area courses ranging from anthropology to zoology. Also, classes, workshops, and individual tutoring for non-native speakers of English are available in areas including American culture, written and oral presentation support, pronunciation, grammar, and conversation/discussion skills. CAREER CENTERThe ISU Career Center is a comprehensive office serving both the career development and employment needs of our students and alumni. INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM (ELS)ISU has contracted with the ELS Language Centers to provide a full-service intensive English program. With classes beginning every four weeks, admission to ELS is always open. Students

Language Program. Exceptions apply for students from English-speaking countries. Satisfactory financial resources. 61 TOEFL iBT or 5.0 IELTS are the required minimum scores.

ISU does not require the SAT or ACT, however we encourage applicants to submit one if available.

REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER STUDENTS(previous university coursework in the U.S. or abroad)

1. Completed application and $40 application fee, 2. Secondary school (high school) diploma and mark sheets are required only if less than

two semesters of full-time study at a university or college (less than 26 credits) has been completed,

3. Official college or university transcripts for all university and college coursework, and official evaluations for coursework done outside the U.S.,

4. TOEFL or IELTS requirement as above, unless student has completed 26+ credits in a U.S. university,

5. 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA,

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR MANY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN SEVERAL FORMS:ASSISTANTSHIPSAt ISU there are several hundred on-campus positions involving teaching or research, available to undergrad students in ISU’s degree programs. Awards of these assistantships are made by the individual graduate level departments. Assistantships also award full tuition costs and a cash stipend, paid through the course of employment. See www.isu.edu/graduate/financial.shtml#assistantships_fellowships for more information.

NON-RESIDENT TUITION WAIVERS (NRTW)Non-resident tuition waivers are available at ISU. These awards reduce the total cost of tuition and fees by about 70%. NRTWs are awarded based on a GPA of 3.0 (or converted equivalent) or higher, and are available for both graduate and undergraduate level students. No application is necessary. Renewal of the award also requires a 3.0 GPA or higher. The majority of NRTWs are in the technical or scientific majors. If a student is awarded an NRTW, he/she is not eligible to also receive an International Room and Board Scholarship. INTERNATIONAL ROOM AND BOARD SCHOLARSHIPSThis scholarship program awards a number of full room and board scholarships to deserving incoming undergraduate students. Eligibility for these awards is based on a GPA of 2.75 or better. The award is a residence hall room in certain residence halls, double occupancy, and a meal plan for the academic year. The awards are renewable, based on continuing GPA. Incoming students cannot receive both the NRTW and a Room and Board Scholarship.

ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

All international students are eligible to work on-campus part-time jobs, available to registered full-time students. The on-campus employment program is administered through the Career Center Services. Note that on-campus employment will help with costs but cannot pay for your expenses in total, and competition for on-campus jobs is high. Contact (208) 282-2380.

wishing to study at ISU but needing language instruction can enter the ELS program at Pocatello or any of the other U.S.-based ELS Language Centers, and with completion of level 112 of the ELS curriculum can be admitted to an ISU degree program without a TOEFL result. A conditional letter of admission to ISU is available to students in most majors not meeting the TOEFL requirement but academically and financially admissible to the university.

ELS also administers the official iBT TOEFL several times per year at the ELS Center in Pocatello, located in the ISU Continuing Education building near the main campus. Register at www.ets.org. InternationalstudentsatISUpay‘non-resident’tuitionandfees(coursecosts),unlessawardedaid(see below), as at almost all public universities in the United States. Idaho State’s tuition rates are significantly lower than most other universities, however.

Living expenses in Pocatello are extremely low. On-campus housing is very reasonably priced (see page 9) and food, restaurant, and recreation/entertainment is readily available at low cost (including an on-campus movie theater and bowling and game center). Shopping in Pocatello offers many choices, including discount and warehouse style stores.

Dependents: A spouse and each additional child who will hold an F-2 or J-2 visa requires additional yearly funding at $3000.

COSTSUniversity Housing (www.isu.edu/housing) at ISU offers a variety of living options suitable for international students and scholars. Both traditional residence halls and on-campus apartments are typically available, but you must make arrangements before arriving on campus.

University housing facilities are safe, secure, convenient, and affordable. Many choices are available, and prices range from $1,260 to $1,803 per semester (4 months) for residence halls, and from $242.50 per person per month for shared apartment units. All housing units are non-smoking, and the cost includes local telephone service, basic cable television service, and all utilities (electricity, water, etc.)

Meal plans are available to make convenient use of the on-campus dining facilities, found in three different locations. A meal plan is required for residence hall students unless they are in their junior year or beyond. Students in apartments may also purchase residence hall meal plans or commuter meal plans. It is not required for ISU students to choose on-campus housing or dining. Living off-campus provides freedom to choose roommates and living style, but offers less convenience and fewer opportunities to participate in campus life and activities.

UNIVERSITY HOUSING AND DINING

POCATELLOISU’s location in the mid-size city of Pocatello means that students have access to popular shops and dining establishments, many offering international items and foods. Living expenses in Pocatello are extremely low. On-campus housing is very reasonably priced (see page 9) and food, restaurant, and recreation/entertainment is readily available at low cost (including an on-campus movie theater and bowling and game center). Shopping in Pocatello offers many choices, including discount and warehouse style stores.

COSTSUniversity Housing (www.isu.edu/housing) at ISU offers a variety of living options suitable for international students and scholars. Both traditional residence halls and on-campus apartments are typically available, but you must make arrangements before arriving on campus.

University housing facilities are safe, secure, convenient, and affordable. Many choices are available, and prices range from $1,260 to $1,803 per semester (4 months) for residence halls, and from $242.50 per person per month for shared apartment units. All housing units are non-smoking, and the cost includes local telephone service, basic cable television service, and all utilities (electricity, water, etc.)

Meal plans are available to make convenient use of the on-campus dining facilities, found in three different locations. A meal plan is required for residence hall students unless they are in their junior year or beyond. Students in apartments may also purchase residence hall meal plans or commuter meal plans. It is not required for ISU students to choose on-campus housing or dining. Living off-campus provides freedom to choose roommates and living style, but offers less convenience and fewer opportunities to participate in campus life and activities.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE FOR MANY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN SEVERAL FORMS:ASSISTANTSHIPSAt ISU there are several hundred on-campus positions involving teaching or research, available to undergrad students in ISU’s degree programs. Awards of these assistantships are made by the individual graduate level departments. Assistantships also award full tuition costs and a cash stipend, paid through the course of employment. NON-RESIDENT TUITION WAIVERS (NRTW)Non-resident tuition waivers are available at ISU. These awards reduce the total cost of tuition and fees by about 70%. NRTWs are awarded based on a GPA of 3.0 (or converted equivalent) or higher, and are available for both graduate and undergraduate level students. No application is necessary. Renewal of the award also requires a 3.0 GPA or higher. The majority of NRTWs are in the technical or scientific majors. If a student is awarded an NRTW, he/she is not eligible to also receive an International Room and Board Scholarship. INTERNATIONAL ROOM AND BOARD SCHOLARSHIPSThis scholarship program awards a number of full room and board scholarships to deserving incoming undergraduate students. Eligibility for these awards is based on a GPA of 2.75 or better. The award is a residence hall room in certain residence halls, double occupancy, and a meal plan for the academic year. The awards are renewable, based on continuing GPA. Incoming students cannot receive both the NRTW and a Room and Board Scholarship.

ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

All international students are eligible to work on-campus part-time jobs, available to registered full-time students. The on-campus employment program is administered through the Career Center Services. Note that on-campus employment will help with costs but cannot pay for your expenses in total, and competition for on-campus jobs is high. Contact (208) 282-2380.

wishing to study at ISU but needing language instruction can enter the ELS program at Pocatello or any of the other U.S.-based ELS Language Centers, and with completion of level 112 of the ELS curriculum can be admitted to an ISU degree program without a TOEFL result. A conditional letter of admission to ISU is available to students in most majors not meeting the TOEFL requirement but academically and financially admissible to the university.

ELS also administers the official iBT TOEFL several times per year at the ELS Center in Pocatello, located in the ISU Continuing Education building near the main campus. Register at www.ets.org. STUDENT HEALTH CENTERThe ISU Student Health Center employs a friendly, professional medical staff to provide students with high-quality, low-cost health care while they are attending ISU. The Student Health Center offers “same day” morning appointments as well as advance appointments for special procedures. A walk-in clinic is also available. The Student Health Center also provides pharmaceutical services to students. Other services available are routine X-rays, laboratory studies, nutrition and healthy lifestyle counseling, and women’s and men’s health clinics. At ISU all international students are required to have acceptable health (medical) insurance. ACADEMIC ADVISING (AAC)Undergraduate international students are advised by faculty in their academic departments. Assigned faculty advisors help the student select the best course schedule, including degree requirements and elective classes. ISU degrees, like those at most American universities, have a wide variety of course choices available, and the advisor helps the advisee make the course choices that best suit their academic, professional and personal goals. Additionally, the Academic Advising Center serves as a general advising resource for all students. CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING (CETL)The Center for Teaching and Learning offers free individual and small-group tutoring in math, writing, and content area courses ranging from anthropology to zoology. Also, classes, workshops, and individual tutoring for non-native speakers of English are available in areas including American culture, written and oral presentation support, pronunciation, grammar, and conversation/discussion skills. To introduce you to the services and programs of the International Programs Office IIPO) and to make sure you enter the United States in proper status, we ask that you bring your passport and immigration documents and check in with us upon your arrival on campus.
