Annual Meeting of the Hungarian Association of Nephrology, 14–16 November 2002, Siófok, Hungary The Annual Meeting of the Hungarian Association of Nephrology (HAN) took place in Siófok, a resort by Lake Balaton, on 14–16 November 2002. This year, in appreciation of their outstanding contributions to clinical practice and scientific research in pediatric nephrology, pediatric nephrologists Professors T. Tulassay and G.S. Reusz were called upon to organize the congress of the entire Hungarian nephrology community (Fig. 1). During the 3 days of the meeting, 144 free communications (oral and poster) and several invited lectures were presented. More than 420 participants attended, including adult and pediatric nephrologists, 190 nurses, and other health care professionals. We are happy to report that several pediatric nephrol- ogists from foreign countries who contributed to the pro- gress of Hungarian pediatric nephrology were honored by an award from the HAN: Professor Johannes Brodehl (Germany) was honored with the Korányi Award. Pro- fessors Jochen H.H. Ehrich (Germany), Aaron Friedman (USA), and Péter Bucsky (Germany) were also honored, and all were made honorary members of the HAN (Fig. 2). Our honorary guests also kindly gave invited lec- tures. Professor Brodehl spoke on the roots and the rise of pediatric nephrology, and Professor Ehrich discussed guidelines for the management of nephrotic syndrome. Professor Friedman gave a presentation on antineutro- phil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) vasculitis, and Professor Bucsky discussed new aspects in the treat- ment of malignant kidney tumors in children and ado- lescents. The presentations covered a broad range of clinical and experimental nephrology (dialysis, transplantation, progression of kidney diseases, vasculitis, cardiovascular risk factors). Areas of contemporary nephrology that are often covered less frequently, such as renal tumors, kid- ney diseases in pregnancy, and pediatric nephrology, were all in separate sections. This successful meeting contributed to the continuous progress of nephrology in Hungary and also provided substantial experience for the organizers, who are pre- paring with pleasure for the 2007 IPNA Congress to be held in Budapest.
