IPLOCA’s 46th Annual Convention - IstanbulThe IPLOCA Convention is a unique opportunity for Regular Members, Associate Members and guests of IPLOCA to gather in a relaxed setting for five days of technical presentations, business meetings, social events and tours.

Owners of and suppliers to pipeline construction companies will be with us in Istanbul. We invite you to join us and to attend the Open General Meetings on Thursday and Friday, with topics focusing on the business perspectives of onshore and offshore pipelines, training, new technologies, safety and the environment. More information about the specific presentations to be offered will be posted on our website as soon as the final details are confirmed.

This year’s tour programme will include some of Istanbul’s most popular attractions, along with an opportunity to participate in pre- and post-convention tours to Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pergamon.

We are thrilled at the opportunity to greet you all in Istanbul. We hope you will take some time to explore our wonderful city which is often and rightfully described as “the Europe you don’t know, the Asia you will discover…”

Based on the feedback we received from you after the Beijing Convention we have put together a list of wonderful speakers for the presentations at the Open General Meetings on Thursday and Friday. You will hear about new projects, accomplishments and developments in our industry as well as an interesting presentation on Istanbul. We also encourage you to take part in the Novel Construction meeting that will be held on Thursday afternoon. Over the last year a lot of work has gone into developing the new sections of our “Road to Success”.

Two awards will be presented during the Open General Meetings. The winners of the IPLOCA Health & Safety Award, sponsored by Chevron, and the IPLOCA Environmental Award, sponsored by Shell, will be announced on Thursday and Friday.

We highly recommend the range of tours and venues being offered during the week and urge you to take full advantage of all that Istanbul has to offer, while taking the opportunity to meet with your colleagues in the industry.

Our lottery this year will support a campaign for education called “Send me to school, Dad”. Initiated in 2005 by one of Turkey’s largest media publishers it supports the nationwide education programme to encourage the education of young girls. More information about this will be available onsite in Istanbul.

IstanbulIstanbul is Turkey’s most populous city and its cultural and financial centre. Located on both sides of the Bosphorus, the narrow strait between the Black Sea and the Marmara, Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally. Istanbul’s population is estimated to be close to 17 million people, making it also one of the largest in Europe and the world.

For nearly a thousand years the imperial city of Constantinople was the last remaining outpost of the Roman Empire. It was finally conquered by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in 1453, an event sometimes used to mark the end of the Middle Ages.

By the mid-1500s Istanbul was a major cultural, political and commercial centre. Ottoman rule continued until it was defeated in WW1 and Istanbul was occupied by the allies.

When the Republic of Turkey was born in 1923 after the War of Independence, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk moved its capital to the city of Ankara. Yet Istanbul continued to grow and today thrives as a vibrant, energetic and highly fashionable city, attracting visitors from all over the world with its many beautiful historic buildings, palaces and mosques, lively restaurants and nightlife – a fascinating combination of the secular and the sacred. It was named a European Capital of Culture for 2010.

This comprehensive full day tour of Istanbul provides the perfect introduction to this exotic city.

Topkapi Palace Museum (including the Harem section)Overlooking the Golden Horn stands the complex of buildings that was the great palace of the Ottoman Sultans – Topkapi Palace – from the 15th to the 19th century.

Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque)Europeans called this the “Blue Mosque” because of the beautiful floral and tree motif tiles found in its interior and manufactured at the end of the high period of the great Iznik workshop. This is the only mosque in the world with six minarets and is probably the most famous landmark of the city.

St. Sophia MuseumOne of the world’s most important architectural works, Hagia Sophia or “Divine Wisdom” was the biggest church of its day and today is still the fourth biggest in the world. After fire and riots destroyed the original building, it was rebuilt under Emperor Justinian (532-537) and is often considered the supreme masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. A lofty central dome, 31 metres in diameter and 56 metres in height, spans its central nave.

Tour 3 - Pera: The Bohemian Istanbul

Monday 10 September 14.00 - 17.00

This is a half day (afternoon) walking tour of the greatest Bohemian sights of Istanbul.

The Pera District was built up as a suburb of Byzantium as early as the 5th century and was called Galata. The area came to be the base for

European merchants, particularly those from Genoa and Venice, who would construct the Galata Tower in what was then known as Pera. The district became a flourishing trade colony and remained under Genoese control until 1453.

This walking tour begins at the Galata Tower, a watchtower of the Genoese fortifications dating from 1349. Galata was established as a western, Latin and Catholic colony right next to Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Orthodox Byzantine Empire.

Tunel Square, at the southwestern end of Istiklal Street, is the upper terminus of Istanbul's little 19th-century, two-station underground train system which connects the shores of the Golden Horn to the Pera district on the hill. Opened for service in 1880, it is the second oldest underground train in Europe.

Istiklal Street is the most important street in the district and used to be called Grande Rue de Pera. It houses a wealth of fascinating buildings including churches, historic buildings, picturesque arcades, old Ottoman Hans, foreign consulates, fine cafés and is the best example of Istanbul's rich cultural and ethnic mosaic.

French Street (Fransiz Sokagi or Rue Française) opened in the summer of 2004 and is to Istanbul what Chinatown and Little Italy are to New York, with tented buildings, street musicians, cafés, bars and art centres.

Tour 5 - Scent of Byzantium

Tuesday 11 September 08.30 - 13.00

The Church of St Saviour in Chora is a legendary Byzantine church decorated with extraordinary late 14th century frescoes and mosaics portraying the life and miracles of Christ.

The tour will continue to the underground Basilica Cistern, the grandest and most impressive of its kind in Istanbul. It was built in the 6th century and water was brought to this reservoir from distant sources through aqueducts. There are 336 columns underground and the cistern is 70 metres wide and 140 metres long.

Tour 4 - City of Harmony

Tuesday 11 September 09.00 - 17.00(including lunch)

Dolmabahce Palace (including the Harem section)Built in 1856, this was the first European style palace in Istanbul and is a supreme example of lavish baroque decoration. Its walls and furniture are covered with fourteen tons of gold gilding. Capturing the sense of what it was really like to live in this luxurious residence, all the furniture is in place as if the royal family had just stepped away on vacation.

The tour will continue by coach along the coast of the Golden Horn. This horn-shaped estuary is one of the best natural harbours in the world, and was once the centre for the Byzantine and Ottoman navies and commercial shipping interests. The head of the Orthodox Church, the Patriarch, resides in this area at Fener. Houses and palaces in Fener and Balat are now protected by a UNESCO preservation programme.

Whirling DervishesBefore having lunch in the courtyard of Suleymaniye Mosque, participants will enjoy a performance of the Whirling Dervishes. This mystical religious dance symbolises the worship ceremony representing the union with God.

The tour will continue to the Suleymaniye Mosque. This impressive mosque was built on the order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and constructed by the great Ottoman architect Sinan. The construction work began in 1550 and was completed in 1557. The mosque is 59 metres long and 58 metres wide and modeled in part on the style of a Byzantine basilica, particularly the Hagia Sophia.

On the way back to the hotel we will make a short stop at the Spice Market. The Spice Market was built in 1660 to help support the upkeep of the mosque. The Grand Bazaar is known for its colours and noises, but the Spice Market is a lesson in smells and tastes. Here is where you can find all manner of Turkish Delight candy (lokum), baklava, teas, Turkish coffee and dried fruits. The array of containers overflowing with colorful spices is really something to see, as well as smell.

Tour 8 - Palaces of Istanbul

Wednesday 12 September 08.30 - 13.30

Visit to the Dolmabahce Palace (excluding the Harem section)Built in 1856, this was the first European-style palace in Istanbul and is a supreme example of lavish baroque decoration. Its walls and furniture are covered with fourteen tons of gold gilding. Highlights will include the famous staircase with

its crystal balustrades and the world’s largest Bohemian crystal chandelier that weighs in at a remarkable 4.5 tons.

Bosphorus CruiseThe Bosphorus is a narrow, navigable 33 km strait between Europe and Asia, connecting the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea. Its shores offer a delightful mixture of past and present, grand splendour and simple beauty. A visit to Istanbul is never complete without a memorable cruise on the Bosphorus.

The tour will continue to the Beylerbeyi Palace. Sultan Abdulaziz built this palace between 1861 and 1865 to replace the older, wooden version. Eastern and Turkish motifs have been used to decorate this impressive building and the atmosphere resembles that of the Dolmabahce Palace. The interior is decorated with Bohemian chandeliers, valuable tiles and ceramic vases, along with silver-edged furniture and luxurious carpets.

Tour 10 - Turkish Bath Experience

Wednesday 12 September 14.00 - 16.30

The Turkish bath is a relaxing and rejuvenating experience and a real treat for those who want to experience a traditional Turkish bath in a historical “Hamam”.

Once you have undressed and have been given a large bath wrap (a peştemal), you will enter into a warm room where you will be doused with warm water, lathered and massaged with a ‘kese’, a special coarse bath glove.

After your bath you will be served refreshments in the main lounge.

Please note: there are separate changing rooms and baths for men and women.

Tour 6 - Treasures of Istanbul

Tuesday 11 September 13.30 - 17.30

The Archaeological Museum houses the collections of 15 civilizations that have flourished in Turkey over the past 4,000 years.

The tour will continue to the Turkish and Islamic Art Museum, a treasure-house of beautiful objects from the Ottoman, Seljuk (11th to 13th centuries), and earlier periods beginning in the 8th century. Turkish carpets, illuminated Korans, calligraphy (at which the Ottomans excelled) and items of carved and inlaid wood, glass, porcelain and stone are beautifully displayed.

The museum is housed in the restored Palace of Ibrahim Pasha, a sumptuous residence built by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's Grand Vezir and close friend Ibrahim Pasha (served 1523-1536).

Maats/Liebherr Golf TournamentTuesday 11 September 07.00 to 16.00 (times to be confirmed)

We are pleased to announce that the convention golf tournament will be jointly sponsored by Maats Pipeline Equipment and Liebherr.

We are currently in negotiation with Kemer Golf and Country Club, Istanbul’s leading golf venue. The course is arranged as a Parkland course and was built in 1995. Kemer hosts a number of national and international tournaments annually including Europe’s biggest Pro-Am Golf Tournament and is approximately 45 minutes by road from the Hilton Istanbul.

Shopping Shuttle to Grand BazaarThe Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 60 covered streets and over 3,000 shops. The streets are arranged in a grid-like system and traditionally shopkeepers have tended to group themselves according to the type of goods they sell, whether it is jewellery, antiques, carpets, copper or leather goods.

Shuttle buses will be running every 30 minutes to and from the hotel to the Grand Bazaar between 13.00 and 18.30 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon.

A detailed schedule will be available at the Registration Desk.

LotteryThe prize for this year’s Final Banquet Lottery has been kindly offered by Volvo Construction Equipment and Renault Trucks. The lucky winner will receive a purchasing certificate for a car to the value of EUR 25,000.

As usual the winning lottery ticket will be drawn at the Final Banquet on Friday evening.

Tickets cost EUR 50 and can be purchased at the Registration Desk throughout the week.

Getting to the Hilton IstanbulThe Hilton Istanbul is located in the centre of the city and is approximately a 35-45 minute drive from Ataturk International Airport.

If you are not planning on arriving on Saturday 8 or Sunday 9 September, the best option is to take a taxi from the airport to the hotel. The fare is around 80 Turkish Lira (approx. EUR 40). Please ensure that you have Turkish currency available as taxis only accept cash. There are ATM machines and currency exchange booths located in the arrivals hall of the airport.

Taxis in Istanbul are either bright yellow or bright orange. Airport taxis are easily identified as they are all orange coloured. Taxis have a single rate, applicable day and night. It is not necessary to tip taxi drivers, however it is customary to tip if your driver has assisted you with your luggage.

Meet & GreetA ‘Meet & Greet’ service will be available at Ataturk International Airport for delegates who arrive on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September.

Hostesses holding IPLOCA signage will meet convention participants in the arrivals hall of Ataturk International Airport and will accompany you to the buses for your complimentary transfer to the Hilton Istanbul.

If you would like to take advantage of the Meet & Greet service, please reserve your place via the online convention registration system and provide your detailed flight arrival/departure times.

Return transfers to the airport will be arranged on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September. Transfer times will be made available to you onsite.

General InformationClimate & ClothingSeptember is the beginning of the autumn in Istanbul. It is usually sunny and the temperature is around 20-23°C during the day and 16-18°C at night. Visitors should pack a light raincoat and a mixture of warm and cool clothes. In September the days tend to begin with a slight haze which clears up later in the day.

TimeTurkey is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 7 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

ElectricityIn Turkey the electric current is 220V (50 Hz). European Standard Type C plugs with two round pins are used.

Banking / CurrencyThe Turkish Lira is the official currency in Turkey. Foreign currency can be changed at banks during normal business hours (09.00 -17.00 Monday to Friday) as well as at the airport, hotels and in exchange offices. All major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops. ATMs are available at many points throughout the city and at the airport.

Business HoursOffices and banks are open on weekdays from 9.00 to 17.00, with a break between 12.00 and 13.30. Most shops are open until 20.00 and all the big shopping malls are open 7 days a week between 10.00 and 22.00. Oriental bazaars such as the Grand Bazaar and the spice market are closed on Sundays.

Eating Out / Turkish CuisineTurkish Cuisine is one of the best in the world. Restaurants are very much part of Turkish cultural life, with a huge array of regional varieties, styles and locations at your fingertips, from gourmet restaurants and Bosphorous-side cafes in the heart of Istanbul to charming coastal fish restaurants, traditional Turkish kebap houses and lokantas where home-made dishes are the order of the day. Turkey is a food-lover’s paradise for all tastes and budgets.

Shopping & BargainingOne of the most enjoyable parts of a trip to Turkey is shopping for the rich variety of Turkish crafts. Istanbul is a shopping paradise with its covered Bazaar as well as its modern shopping malls. Turkish carpets, kilims (flat woven carpets or rugs) suede and leatherwear as well as other items of clothing are the best buys. Copper, silver, brassware and jewellery are also a good choice, along with ceramic art and the famous Turkish meerschaum (a soft white mineral).

Bargaining is a tradition in Turkey especially in souvenir shops and oriental bazaars. One is expected to bargain for expensive as well as less valuable items, however, in modern shopping malls the price is clearly indicated on the product and bargaining is not usually accepted.

TippingTax and service charges are included in the cost of all goods and services. Although it is not mandatory, a small tip is expected for good service. It is customary to add 10% in restaurants if you are satisfied with the service.

Smoking PolicyFloors 1, 5 and 7 are smoking floors. Guests are allowed to smoke in their room if it is a designated smoking room and smoking is allowed in all outside areas.

Smoking is not allowed in non-smoking rooms, function rooms, restaurants nor in any public area in the hotel.

Check-In / Check-Out TimesHotel check-in time is 14.00. Every effort will be made by the hotel to accommodate guests arriving before the check-in time; however, rooms may not be immediately available.

Hotel check-out time is 12.00. Requests to retain rooms beyond this time should be directed to the Front Desk upon your arrival. Should it be possible to retain the room beyond the check-out time, a late departure charge may be applicable.

In order to secure a very early check-in or a very late check-out it is advisable to book the room the night before or the night following.

Registration InformationOnline registration via www.iploca.com will open on 1st May 2012.

Only members who have paid their 2012 IPLOCA Membership Fees are eligible to attend the Convention.

Regular Members may invite a maximum of three couples and Associate Members two couples as their guests. Participation in the Convention is at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Only those persons who have registered for the Convention and have received confirmation of their registration are entitled to participate in any Convention activity or event.

Convention participation and tour reservations are not guaranteed until the Convention Fee payment is received in full.

The Convention Fee is EUR 1,250 per single attendee or couple up until 10 August 2012 and EUR 1,550 per single attendee or couple after 10 August 2012.

The cut-off date for registration is 10 August 2012. After this date, assuming there is still space available, a EUR 300 premium on the Convention Fee will apply and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until we reach the limit of 700 attendees.

Only when you have received your Hilton Istanbul Confirmation Number, can you then register for the Convention and reserve your place on tours and at other events.

All accommodation requests will require a valid major credit card guarantee and a two (2) night deposit at the Group Rate for the room category requested. The Hotel can also accept deposit payments by bank transfer up to one month prior to your arrival.

Passport & Visa RequirementsEvery foreign visitor entering Turkey must possess a valid passport. Participants are requested to check visa requirements with the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in their home country or at http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa

Participants from countries requiring a visa for entry to Turkey are strongly advised to make their applications in their home country at least one month before the intended date of travel. Passports should be valid at least 90 days longer than the expiry date of the requested visa.

Should you need to apply for a visa, please indicate this when registering for the Convention and the IPLOCA Secretariat will send you a letter of invitation in support of your application.

Cancellation Terms & ConditionsCancellation Terms & Conditions for Refund of Convention Registration Fees:

• All convention registration cancellations must be notified in writing to the IPLOCA Secretariat: convention@iploca.com

• All convention registration cancellations received up until 30 June 2012 will incur a EUR 300 Cancellation Fee

• All convention registration cancellations received between 1 July and 10 August 2012 will incur a 50% Cancellation Fee

• There will be no refund of convention registration fees for cancellations received after 10 August 2012

• Substitutions for convention registrations for persons within the same company are possible. Please note that a EUR 200 administrative fee will be payable

Cancellation Terms & Conditions for Room Reservations:

Pre and Post Convention ToursThe following pre- and post-Convention tours have been specially designed for participants of the IPLOCA 2012 Convention by VISITUR the Ground Agent for our Istanbul Convention. Reservations should be made at the time of registering for the Convention at www.iploca.com

Cappadocia, the triangle between Nevsehir, Nigde, and Aksaray is located to the south of Ankara (the capital of Turkey). The name "Cappadocia" is inherited from the Persians and means “Land of Beautiful Horses”.

This region has always been historically important for the ruling empires of Anatolia, including Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. The violent eruptions of the volcanoes Erciyes and Hasan long ago covered the plateau with tuff (also known as tufa), a soft stone comprised of lava, ash and mud. The wind and rain have eroded this brittle rock and created a spectacular surrealistic landscape of rock cones, capped pinnacles and fretted ravines, in colours that range from warm reds and gold to cool greens and greys.

After the 7th century the inhabitants, in need of protection against invaders, built underground cities. These rocks have been shelter, home and a place of worship to people for many centuries.

Tour Highlights:The Ephesus Museum This museum is in the town of Selcuk at the eastern foothill of Ayasuluk Hill and houses exceptional marble statues of Artemis.

Ephesus It is often said that Ephesus is one of the most beautiful ancient cities in the world. Its favourable location at the mouth of the Cayster River made it the foremost commercial city of a coastal region that also included the cities of Miletus, Smyrna and Pergamon. However the gradual silting up of its harbour resulted in the loss of this status.

The city has been excavated for more than one hundred years; the extensive remains are predominantly from the later Roman period.

House of the Virgin Mary It is known that the Virgin Mary went to Ephesus and lived there for some time. The location was officially declared a shrine by the Roman Catholic Church in 1896, and since then it has become a popular place of pilgrimage.
