Key themes in iOS 10

OPENNESS iOS 10 gives 3rd-party developers access to

more of its core product features. It is the start of big changes in Apple’s famously closed

platform that will greatly multiply the power and potential of apps and provide new ways to

engage an audience.

INTERFACES With iOS 10, Apple has provided new ways to

interact with notifications, widgets and messages, while sharply reducing the steps

needed to do so. The end result is that you can get things done faster and easier, all without

actually opening any apps.

Notifications

What are notifications? Instant alerts from apps.

What’s new in iOS 10? ‘Raise to wake’ is a new feature that activates your screen when you pick up your phone, giving you immediate access to notifications. With 3D Touch, when you interact with a notification, it will allow you to see live content or interact with the app directly within the notification.

What does it mean? The lock screen is now more than just a security barrier: it can act as a useful interface, providing quick access to content. This presents a new opportunity to increase user retention and engagement by making it faster and easier to take common actions, without opening an app or even having to unlock your phone.

Widgets

What are widgets? Think of a widget as a window into an app that provides core content or functionality, straight from your lock screen.

What’s new in iOS 10? Widgets are easily accessed by swiping left from the new lock screen or notification centre. With 3D Touch, tapping an app icon will bring up its widget. When viewing widgets, there is now an option to expand them. This allows for additional functionality. A Calendar widget, for example, could show you more of your upcoming agenda than just the next appointment, or a sports app could show highlight videos directly from the widget.

What does it mean? Widgets will be far more useful and accessible than before, opening up new ways for developers and designers to engage and retain users.

iMessage

What is iMessage? The native iOS instant messaging service.

What’s new in iOS 10? iMessage gets its very own App Store, allowing widget-type access to your apps as you are using iMessage. Imagine checking your route on Citymapper whilst chatting and confirming plans with your friends within iMessage. Additional changes such as animations and large emojis bring iMessage in line with most of the popular messaging apps on the market. These changes include stickers, animated gifs, and handwriting support.

What does it mean? Create and share content, make payments, and more - all from within iMessage. This will allow iMessage to become a major new channel with which to acquire and engage users.

Siri

What is Siri?

Apple’s voice-activated, intelligent assistant.

What’s new in iOS 10? Apple are allowing developers to build support for Siri into their apps. This means that you could ask Siri to book your Uber, or Skype a contact. The functionality is, however, currently limited to a small range of popular domains: VoIP calling, messaging, booking a ride, searching photos, workouts, CarPlay, or making payments.

What does it mean? Apple are setting up voice as a whole new app interface. For now, it’s a high impact development only for apps relevant to these domains, but the expectation is that Apple will continue to expand the list.

Apple Maps

What is Apple Maps? The in-built iOS mapping service.

What’s new in iOS 10? Developers will be able to access the new Maps API to integrate third party services, like restaurant booking and taxi hailing from within Maps. Apple have also added more predictive functionality, like dining suggestions, plus there is improved navigation and traffic report integration.

What does it mean? Apple Maps is getting smarter and more open. It’s a new channel for companies with related services to acquire and engage users.

Speech Recognition API

What is the Speech Recognition API? New procedures for third party developers when adding speech recognition to their apps.

What’s new in iOS 10? The Speech Recognition API allows for improved, continuous (but initially quite limited) speech recognition. It also makes it straightforward for developers to plug voice control and dictation into any app.

What does it mean? Speech Recognition increases the potential for better user experiences, and a whole new class of voice-driven apps or features. It’s a good bet that voice integration will be a basic user expectation in the near future.

CallKit

What is CallKit?

CallKit is a new API for VoIP apps to integrate with the native iPhone user interface.

What’s new in iOS 10?

For the first time, apps like WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook can integrate directly with your iPhone and function like a standard voice call. Voicemail transcription and a new caller ID alert for spam calls have also been added.

What does it mean?

VoIP apps get one step closer to replacing standard voice calls - although there are still many hurdles to clear before they become the new norm.

HomeKit

What is HomeKit?

A framework for home automation.

What’s new in iOS 10? A dedicated Home app that functions as a unified control panel for HomeKit-compliant devices, like Nest and Hue. This will allow you to monitor the status of all devices at a glance, and from the Control Centre, avoiding the clutter and confusion of switching between multiple apps. You can then access more options and information for each device using 3D Touch, providing quick access to features such as a video from a smart doorbell camera.

What does it mean? Large scale home automation becomes ever more viable.

What is Apple News?

Apple’s native news publishing and recommendation service.

What’s new in iOS 10?

A For You tab breaks down the news into personalised topics based on your habits and preferences. iOS 10 also introduces support for paid subscriptions, so you can read publications that are behind paywalls. Breaking news notifications have also been added, which take advantage of the new, richer lock screen.

What does it mean?

Apple News becomes a significantly stronger news product, and an increasingly important consideration for anyone in the media and publishing industries.

What is Differential Privacy?

A way for Apple to anonymously gather data while maintaining user privacy.

What’s new in iOS 10?

Differential privacy now combines user data with randomised data to mask any individual’s personal details. This will be used in a wide variety of ways, from safely collecting user data from iMessage to help with predictive text, to the search functionality in Notes and Spotlight.

What does it mean?

Users can rest assured that their privacy concerns are met, while Apple gets the data it needs to power machine learning.
