5 Things you can do to support mathematics in Minneapolis

1. Have an infectious passion and belief that everyone can be highly successful in mathematics. Effort creates ability. Mathematical ability is not a trait you either have or don’t have.

Never (ever, ever) say any version of the following: “I was never good at Mathematics”, “I am not good at mathematics”,

or “Mathematics is hard” ...and please call anyone out who does say this.

2. Be able to clearly articulate what mathematics is and what mathematicians do. See the back of this sheet for the definition of mathematics.

3. Read one grade level of the Minnesota State Math Standards. The math department is happy to provide this document for you. If you don’t know where to start, start with 8th grade. State law requires all MN 8th grade students to master ‘algebra’. What does ’algebra’ mean? Read the standards to find out. Choose 1 standard/benchmark you can help students improve their understanding of (even if you are not a math teacher).

4. In 2014-15 add 3 new mathematics terms to your vocabulary and use each term at least 5 times in conversations you have. If you don’t know where to start, start with the term ‘integer’. Students often struggle with assessments because of the mathematical terminology. If we don’t know the meaning of (& use) math terms, how will our students?

5. Celebrate Pi Day. Pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. Pi is an irrational number approximately equal to 3.14. If you turn 3.14 into a date you get March 14th. Use this day to not only eat pie but also to write a note of encouragement to one of the incredibly hard-working math teachers in this district. (by the way, how excited are you to celebrate pi day 2015? (π=3.1415...))

nnn 2

Mathematicians do 3 things: They Notice Patterns.

They Describe Patterns. They Generalize Patterns.

All students (and adults) should be given daily opportunities to practice these 3 skills. One way of knowing if students have this opportunity is to look at the list of questions to the right. If one of these questions can not be asked about the mathematics students are engaging in, more than likely students are not developing the skills necessary to be a life long mathematician.

Teacher Questions

that allow students to observe, compare, communicate, organize, relate and infer.

What do you notice?

How are these similar?

How are these different?

What is common?

What is the relationship between _____&_____?

How are they alike?

What do you see?

What else do you see?
