Muslims fast and dedicate themselves to reflection and self-discipline. One fasts from dawn to sunset for an entire month refraining from food and drink. It is a time to build compassion towards others especially those who know what hunger truly means. Of course we have a similar purpose with our Yom Kippur fast and observance but we only do that for one day. Last year I read of a number of congregations who hosted iftar dinners for their Muslim neighbors around the country. It was decided that we have this special opportunity to extend our hospitality to members of the local Muslim community who are already neighbors and friends to many of us. This year we decided to do this on a limited basis so please note that not everyone will be able to participate. (Please see the notice in another part of the bulletin.) The fast is broken in a traditional manner. After the evening prayer there is the eating of a date and drinking some water.

Then the meal is served. The traditional greeting that one can offer is “Ramadan mubarak,” May you have a blessed Ramadan. I want to thank our Women’s Chavurah and our Social Action Committee who are making this come to fruition.

Shalom,Rabbi Alan J. Katz

Over the years one of the most satisfying parts of my rabbinate has been the work in interfaith activities. There have been so many occasions where I engaged in activities and with people that were outside the world of the Jewish community. What has been so impressive time and again has been the hospitality shown to outsiders when we visit other venues of faith. Our Kesher students over the years have encountered this warm hospitality in the Hindu Temple, the Sikh Gurdwara and the Islamic Center, and numerous churches. We have returned some of this hospitality with invitations to our Sukkah and Passover Seders. This welcoming atmosphere where we share our culture and our food is always appreciated. Over the years invitations have come from both the Islamic Center of Rochester and the Turkish community to visit them and share a meal to break the fast during Ramadan. The meal to break the fast is called an iftar. Each year the Islamic Center invites many non-Muslims to a special iftar to share their bounty and culture with friends and guests. It has been an honor to be invited and there have been times when I was asked to speak during the program before dinner. Ramadan is a holy month in the Islamic calendar when the revelation of the Koran began. Since the Muslim calendar is a purely lunar one with no solar adjustments as we have in our Jewish calendar, the months rotate each year to a different corresponding point in our Gregorian calendar. Ramadan changes seasons over the years. It is a time when able-bodied

Contacting The RabbisPlease let the temple office (381-6890) know of any illnesses, deaths or joyous occasions so that the Rabbis and the congregation can respond appropriately. Also, remember not to schedule any life cycle events at which Rabbi Katz or Rabbi Till will be present without speaking to them first.

To reach Rabbi Till in an emergency, please call her cell phone (355-0192). While Rabbi Katz is on sabbatical, please call the temple office at 381-6890 if you need to contact him.

It is a mitzvah to visit those who are ill. Please remember that HIPAA regulations prevent hospitals from alerting us when someone is ill. We ask temple members who are aware that one of our members is in a hospital to please call the Temple Sinai office so that one of our Rabbis may visit them.

The seders were lovely, and then they were over. The kids went back to their respective universities, and I began to clear my calendar of non-essential meetings. And I started counting the days until the furniture store could deliver my new recliner to sleep in.

For the very traditional, if you miss a full evening and day of counting the Omer, you must count the rest of the days without saying the blessing, because you have not fulfilled the mitzvah of counting the complete weeks. You may still count, but you must listen to someone else recite the blessing. While we are supposed to be looking joyfully towards Shavuot and the receiving of the Torah, it also teaches us mindfulness. We count each day, numbering it, blessing it, and looking forward to the next.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the disappointments. There were many times in these last few weeks that I wished I could just skip ahead to a time when this would all be over, but I am learning to appreciate what each day brings, and the blessings of family, friends, and each new skill learned with my non-dominant hand. I am trying to be mindful of the goodness around me. I truly appreciated the wonderful meals cooked by my husband, and the holiday table set by my children. I am trying to find the blessings in each day. I am overwhelmed daily by all of those around me that I know I can count on to help.

And I am looking with eager anticipation towards Saturday, May 19th, when we celebrate the giving of the Torah, usher in Shavuot, and celebrate our 10th grade Confirmation Class. Please join me on that 50th day of counting, and join me as well in “counting on” instead of “counting off,” because when we count on each other, we can fulfill mitzvot together. Count on it!

Blanche Fenster

From the evening of the second day of Passover until Shavuot, we are instructed to Count the Omer. We are to mark seven full weeks between the time that the ancient barley offerings were brought to the Temple, and the holiday of Shavuot, reciting the blessing every evening for 49 days and celebrating Shavuot, the giving of the Torah, on day number fifty.

Passover is a holiday I have always “counted down” to. I cook for seders, and have calendar appointments for making, freezing, and defrosting soup, shopping, baking, and making about a hundred matzoh balls. Everything is planned to the day, counting down from the emailed invitations and phone calls (three weeks prior) to the brisket (cooked the day before) to the table setting (the morning of the Seder.) After the second Seder, though, my personal counting is usually done, and I have always ignored the Count of the Omer.

This year my counting took a very different turn. On the Friday before Passover, as I was cleaning up from a lovely Shabbat dinner, I slipped on my own kitchen floor and broke my shoulder. This started my first count: the two days between my emergency visit and when the Orthopedic offices would reopen. Soon everything became a count: a week until another x-ray. Four to six weeks in a sling. And just a week until Passover.

My “counts” had me reeling. My husband loves to cook, and I knew that cooking the Seder meals would actually be fun for him, but how could we get everything done in time if I was going to be of no help? The kids were coming home for the holiday, but could I count on them to work? Suddenly I went from “counting off” to “counting on.” I counted on my immediate family to help me create the holiday smells and visions that I was yearning for. I counted on my friends and extended family to help with serving, clearing dishes, and cleaning. I counted on the traditions and the friendship to help me through the lack of independence and lack of sleep that were weighing on me.

Inclusion Awareness and Education DaySinai congregants and community members came together on March 11 to learn with inclusion expert Shelly Christensen, MA, FAAIDD. Shelly shared Jewish texts that illus-trate the information discussed by participants… •A mandate to be a welcoming synagogue

for all who want to pray and participate in Temple life... "For my house shall be a house of prayer for all people" - Isaiah 56:5.

•An assessment of our facility to optimize its accessibility and ability to accommodate members with disabilities... "Do not insult a person who is deaf or put a stumbling block in front of someone who is blind" - Leviticus 19:14

•The importance of giving all of our children the best opportunity to learn and grow... "Teach each child according to his way. Even when he is old, he will not depart from it" - Proverbs Mishlei

•Ways to move our membership and leader-ship toward a goal of being an exemplar of a truly inclusive congregation... "Every member of the people of Israel is obligated to study Torah - whether one is rich or poor, physically able or with physical disability" - Maimonides, Mishne Torah

The Accessibility and Inclusion Committee welcomes anyone interested in advancing our mission to weave inclusion into our congre-gational life by continuing work in the areas of accessibility, education and awareness.

racticesThe Religious Practices Committee has approved the replacement of two of our High Holy Days Torah covers. After consideration of different styles, colors and fabrics, the Committee has selected the two designs seen below. They most closely represent the style of our other High Holy Days Torah covers. These covers feature metallic gold and silver on a white background.

The designer, Margery Langner of Custom Judaica, suggested that we might also purchase liners for the insides of the covers. Names can be printed on these liners providing congregants and friends with an opportunity to honor or remember friends and family. The Religious Practices Committee wholeheartedly agrees!! It is with great pride and enthusiasm that for a donation of $100 per line - the name(s) you designate will be printed on the liner of a new High Holy Day Torah cover. One scroll will be designated specifically for names of congregants themselves or for those they wish to include “In Honor of ….”and the other scroll will be for names designated “In Memory of”…..

Here are some examples of how you might submit names.

Harry and Frances SnyderSarah Meyers

Suzanne Smith and Charles Jones

If you want your own name included on the Torah liner, please choose the “In Honor of…” Torah liner.

Since each cover and liner is custom made, time is of the essence and all requests and donations must be complete before June 25th. This is a very hard deadline. At no date in the future will we be able to add names.

Please send your donation ($100 per line – see above) with the name(s) requested to the office. Be sure to specify whether the name is to be included on the “In Honor of” Torah liner or on the “In Memory of “ Torah liner. Funds not used to cover the cost of the new Torah covers and liners will be donated to the Torah Restoration Fund.

Did you sign up for Mitzvah Day activities?

Don’t miss the new and improved Mitzvah Day.

Opportunities for everyone!

If you haven’t signed up there’s still time. (See our link in Snippets or on the temple website.) Mitzvah Day begins with a special service from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. Next we meet with our groups and go to our activities. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. an Israeli lunch and pizzas will be served in the social hall. This is a time to share with others about your activities.

Also during this time, we will have Social Action Centers to visit where you can register to vote, bring small recyclables to Color Brighton Green, learn about Pachamama Alliance for environmental education and sign letters to advocate for children through the Children’s Agenda.

We are still collecting for School 45 new backpacks, school supplies such as glue sticks, post-its, crayons, markers, colored pencils, small hand sanitizers, small scissors, dry erase markers. For women and children in transition we are collecting new socks, underwear, small toys, and flashlights. Recyclables being collected are orange medicine bottles with caps removed and personal info deleted, eye glasses, sneakers, corks, can pull tabs, and CDs and DVDs. There are bins at each entrance.

See you on Mitzvah Day! Ilan Adar, Marilyn Rosen and Nancy Kraus
