54th International Making Cities Livable Conference on

Public Places for Community, Democratic Dialogue, Health & Equity Santa Fe, NM, October 2-6, 2017

Dear International Making Cities Livable, Welcome to Santa Fe! Our community thanks you very much for choosing The City Different for the fifth time to host your conference, and for coming at such a beautiful time of our year. This year’s conference theme of “Public Places for Community, Democratic Dialogue, Health and Equity” is one that Santa Fe relates to strongly. As you may know from previous visits, we preserve, protect and produce our public spaces with those principles in mind. We’ve been recognized by the American Planning Association, who named the Santa Fe Railyard as one of the Great Places In America, and last December we were named one of three finalists in the world for the National Geographic World Legacy Awards in the Sense Of Place category.

Your continued visits to us also reaffirm our commitment as a livable, sustainable city with treasured community places and other features of “True Urbanism” as you define it. For example, in addition to preserving the long and low architectural style that protects our mountain views, Santa Fe provides free transit through the Santa Fe Pick-Up service. In addition to our Green Lodging initiative, over the last dozen years the city has added 19 miles of paved, off-road hike/bike trails and another 12 miles of designated bike routes—in part leading to a Silver Ride Level Destination award from the International Mountain Biking Association. Currently we work to unify the entire trail system around the city. From our historic public square and marketplaces to outdoor cafes, farmers markets, and community festivals, and from human-scale architecture and balanced transportation to pedestrian and bicycle networks, we share our values with you. Santa Fe is also full of public art, but also an artwork itself, and is designed to be safe, creative and inspiring for young and old, families of all kinds, and everyone else who comes down the trail to see us. We are especially honored to have International Making Cities Livable with us at this important time and wish you all the best this week in Santa Fe and in all your endeavors beyond the conference. Javier M. Gonzales, Mayor, City of Santa Fe

Public places – our streets, plazas, squares, and green spaces – belong to ALL of us! They are our democratically shared common wealth - the most important aspect of every city. How we treat the public realm demonstrates how we value our fellow citizens, our democratic principles, and our community. If we treasure our plazas and main squares as beautiful places for community festivals and celebrations, we are embracing our unity and the power of our shared identity as a city. If we hold a daily farmers market on a square next to city hall, government representatives can demonstrate they value democratic dialogue, and civic engagement flourishes. If we create lively, hospitable neighborhood plazas, we exhibit our faith in the benefits of social

life and community, and the opportunity to raise our children within a village of sustained adult relationships. If we make our streets safe for walking and biking, and provide good public transit, we show that we recognize that health is important, and that we care for our children and elders as much as for those in cars. If we make our streets beautiful, hospitable, and lively with active street facades, we encourage strolling, lingering at outdoor cafes, and the sociable interaction that can follow. Public places are the essential key to a livable city. Join us in Santa Fe to share your achievements and learn from others how we can take back our streets and squares - and in the process, strengthen community, civic engagement, health, and equity. See you in beautiful Santa Fe - “The City Different”! Suzanne H. Crowhurst Lennard, Ph.D.(Arch.) Co-founder & Director, IMCL Conference

54th International Making Cities Livable Conference on

Public Places for Community, Democratic Dialogue, Health & Equity Santa Fe, NM, October 2-6, 2017

Organizer: International Making Cities Livable Conference (IMCL)

Where: La Fonda Hotel, Santa Fe, New Mexico

When: October 2-6, 2017 What: 54th International Making Cities Livable Conference on Achieving Green Healthy Cities Who: This conference will bring together 300-350 outstanding delegates - elected officials,

practitioners and scholars in planning, urban design, public health, architecture, landscape architecture, land use development, transportation planning, human development, and social sciences from around the world - to share experiences, ideas and expertise.

Why: At this conference, we will examine creative strategies, tools and design solutions for creating

Public Places for Community, Democratic Dialogue, Health & Equity.

These goals cannot be achieved by professionals in one field alone. They require collaborative efforts and insights from many disciplines. We will hear from world-renowned experts working at the interface between planning, urban design, public health, landscape architecture, transportation planning, architecture, and social sciences, and review outstanding projects from the UK, Europe, North America and around the world.

Sponsorship: Your sponsorship will emphasize your organization’s dedication to the goals of making cities more healthy, green and livable. It will help ensure the highest quality speakers on these topics, and carry this message to a broad international audience.

By bringing together a diverse group of delegates from the planning, urban design, public health and other fields, we will increase the understanding of why it is so important to achieve green healthy cities, and highlight exemplary organizations, firms, and projects worldwide that are achieving these goals. The IMCL Board will be honored if you will become a Sponsor.

Proposed Level: Your sponsorship would qualify for one of our four sponsor classifications depending on the

level of contribution. For example, with a donation of $10,000 you will receive acknowledgement on the Conference program, your logo and link on the Conference website, as well as a sign display at the event, and an exhibit table in the conference venue for all participants to view throughout the week. Four free participant registrations are included as well as an invitation to the VIP table at the Conference Luncheon, Discussion Dinner and Awards Ceremony, and VIP Cocktail Party. Lastly, as a sponsor, your mission will be strongly reinforced by this conference.

54th International Making Cities Livable Conference on

Public Places for Community, Democratic Dialogue, Health & Equity Santa Fe, NM, October 2-6, 2017

Comments from Past IMCL Participants

“The most important continuous conference dialogue on making the world's cities and towns more livable for all of their inhabitants.”

Dr. Sven von Ungern-Sternberg Regierungspraesident (Governor),

State of South Baden, Germany "I want to again thank you, the Council, and the conference team for an excellent 49th Conference. And, now, the “eConference” is truly the icing on the cake – I really did want to read the papers and view the slides of presenters I missed, and my wish has been granted!"

Rick Phillips RA, Assoc. VP & Director Urban Design, HNTB Corp.

"The conference was very informative and well organized and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the speakers from all over the world. The IMCL Council is doing a wonderful job of encouraging cities to plan more livable and healthy communities."

Don Paight, Executive Director, City of Fort Myers, FL

“I deeply appreciate your commitment to this cause of livable cities. In a sense, it’s a little frustrating that we have to have a “livable cities movement.” That’s what the city was originally all about: to provide places where people could live fruitful and healthy lives. Over the decades, we seemed to have lost our way. I do appreciate what you’ve done, bringing people together from a variety of disciplines from around the world to focus on communities, to learn from each other, and to share information.”

Congressman Earl Blumenauer Oregon 3rd District

“What an amazing conference! One of the best professional events I have ever attended!! Well-structured, extremely well-organized and super-high quality of both the presenters and materials presented.”

Dr. Mirela Newman Coordinator, Urban Studies Graduate Program, SCSU

“A wonderful Conference. I truly believe this is the best Conference on cities.”

Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. City of Charleston, SC

"... what a wonderful experience I had at the IMCL conference in Charleston last week ... a truly invigorating event. I was inspired by being able to connect with so many wonderful people from around the world who are all passionate about the creation of great places."

James Dougherty AICP CNU Director of Design, Dover, Kohl & Partners

“The conference was one of the most interesting and genuinely useful for information gathering that I’ve been to. The different backgrounds of the participants addressing the same issues…was the key. In a way, the group was rather like a small town with varied citizenry meeting in a “third place.”

Joe Anglin Glatting Lopez Kercher Anglin,

Orlando, Florida “Thank you for the utterly fascinating conference... It has been a long time since I have been intellectually stimulated and been involved with such international creativity and innovations. The conference energized me and I was able to bring back ideas and information to my city.”

Councilmember Stephanie Karlin, Avondale, AZ

“I shall, for a long time to come, be referring to my notes from the Conference. What a wonderful and inspiring session. I learned so much and found the exchange of ideas so stimulating not only from the practical but theoretical approach as well. I’m only sorry I couldn’t be four people at once and attend all the concurrent sessions.”

Janet C. Moran Councilwoman, City of Hammond, Indiana

Conference Organizers

International Making Cities Livable Council The International Making Cities Livable Council (IMCL) was founded in 1985 to raise awareness, through conferences and publications, of the effects of urban planning on livability, health and social well-being. Conferences have been held every year in the United States and Europe. They are unique in enabling city officials, architects, planners, developers, community leaders, behavioral and public health scientists, artists and others responsible for the livability of their cities to exchange experiences, ideas and expertise. The varied perspectives provide deeper understanding of the issues and generate creative solutions. In 1985, when these conferences began, there was no discussion at other planning or architectural conferences, or even at the League of Cities Conferences about making our cities more "livable". Only the IMCL Conferences focused attention on the importance of making cities livable for children first, the need for public transit, bicycle lanes, and traffic calmed streets, for human scale architecture and mixed use urban fabric, for reviving the city center and creating public places where people could gather for farmers markets, festivals, outdoor cafes and community social life. By bringing together people of vision from all disciplines at the past 53 IMCL Conferences, by presenting the best examples from Europe and North America, and by honoring cities and civic leaders for their achievements, we rejoice in the fact that these are now common goals for cities all across North America and Australia, as well as in Europe. For more information, please visit www.LivableCities.org. City of Santa Fe Santa Fe was founded in 1607 on the site of an indigenous village at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains by the Spanish governor, Don Pedro de Peralta. He named the city La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asís, the Royal Town of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi. In 1610, Santa Fe was designated as the capital of the province, making it the oldest state capital in the United States. The Spanish laid out the city according to the 1573 Laws of the Indies, around a large central open plaza, with a rough grid plan of streets, adapted to existing routes. The plaza was intended for a market, commerce, festivals and ceremonies. In 1840 cottonwood trees were planted around the open plaza, and it came to be used as an alfalfa field. During the Territorial period the plaza was reduced to half its original size. In 1868 a war monument was erected in the center, the plaza was fenced, and by 1882, it had been transformed into a formal urban park with lawns, benches, and radial paths. In 1912, the emphasis on historic preservation in the City Beautiful movement encouraged Santa Fe to require that new development must be in harmony with the city's character. Using traditional adobe construction techniques, vigas and canales, the Santa Fe style was born. This was broadened in 1930 to include the Territorial style, with portales, and terra cotta tiles. A 1957 ordinance required all new construction to reflect these styles. Maintaining the traditions of the city's rich cultural heritage helps make Santa Fe unique. Santa Fe is renowned as a center for the arts. Painters such as Georgia O’Keeffe and photographer Elliot Porter were drawn by the beauty of the area, as were writers such as D. H. Lawrence. And Santa Fe is home to many cultural events such as the Santa Fe Opera, the Chamber Music Festival, choral and ballet festivals, as well as the Santa Fe Fiesta and the Indian Market.
