Background• Changes
– No budget for Invigilators (small budget for specialists)– Require 127 Invigilators to cover 1 week for HW & Uxbridge– Student : invigilator ratio = maximum 40 : 1
• Locations – Events Hall, High Wycombe (14 sessions)– The Park Room, Uxbridge (6 sessions)– Various separate rooms in HW & Uxbridge (coordinated by AQD)
• Types of assessments - exams, time constrained assessments (TCAs), multiple choice tests (MCQs), answer on the question paper, OSCEs
Roles• Bucks employees
– Conferment & Events Hub (AQD)– Disability Service– Faculty registry teams– Academics– Security– Estates & Facilities
• Invigilating teams for main room (max of 3) – Senior Invigilator – PSE from AQD– 2 Invigilator/s – Academic (appropriate) & PSE
• Separate rooms– Separate room invigilator – PSE – Amanuensis - Specialists– Readers - Specialists
Students with reasonable adjustmentsThe university has a responsibility to students who have registered with the Disability Service to provide and make any reasonable adjustments deemed necessary
• 145 students for the January exam period registered with Disability Service so far!– Dyslexia, dyspraxia,– Physical and mobility conditions – Mental health
• Reasonable adjustments encompasses:– Use of computer– Extra time– Coloured paper– Separate room – amanuensis, readers
What is provided• Exam papers• Answer books• Continuation papers• Clocks• Dictionaries• Treasury tags• Signage• Tissues• Contact details (AQD and Faculty)
What can be taken into the exam room• Coats and bags are left in a designated area outside the room (main room only)
• Valuables
• Mobile phones – switched off
• Drinks and sweets
Invigilator announcements• Before entering the room:
– Have ID card ready– Coats and bags not in exam room– Listen to the invigilator for where the students should sit– No talking
• In the room: (crib sheet provided)– Mobiles switched off and put away under seat– ID card on edge of desk– Make sure the student is taking the right exam!– Instructions on timing, extra time, requests– Remain seated until papers are collected or invigilator says the student can go
Before the exam• Times (arrive 30 mins before the start of the exam)• Papers will be provided by AQD• Room set up, preparation before and after• Multiple exams in the same room need to be aware of the variable length
of exams• Seating plan and arrangements• Register, Gallery and ID checking – validity of Bucks ID or alternative photo
card ID, work IDNO ID – Letter sent to student
During the exam• Students are allowed into the room up to 30 minutes after the start of the
exam – if later student is sent to the Faculty registrar• Students can not leave in the first hour or last 15 minutes• Invigilate and be observant!• Silence once in the exam room and until they are away from the
room/building• Authorised and unauthorised material• Be aware of:
Extra paper, dictionary, comfort break requests Body language, persistent behaviour types, illness Announcements to be made
CheatingIn real terms there are very few incidents of cheating however it does happen!Examples:
Unauthorised notes, hidden notes (in and outside of the room),talking, mobile phone, etc
What to do?• Confiscate material, warn student and record the incident on the report
sheet and cheating inv. record• If talking, warn student and record the incident on the report sheet and
cheating investigation record• Disruptive behaviour – contact Faculty and Security to remove the student
and record the incident
At the end of the examAnnounce 15 and 5 minutes to go – beware of different start and finish timesWhen exam time finishes students must remain seated and silent until papers are collectedScript collection– Compiled in numeric order of Student ID at end of exams (marks
collection form)– Complete any paperwork (cheating/report forms)– Return papers to designated member of staff– Report any incidents to AQD

• Computer exams – logins and procedures will be provided prior to examination
Health & Safety• Know the fire procedures and where exits and meeting points
are.– Drills are never planned for central exams weeks
• Know what to do if power fails – same as for a fire– Make a judgement call on what action take– If evacuated keep students together, no talking.
• Don’t move or lift equipment – always get porters• First Aid
Do’s and don’tsDo• Do find your inner head teacher – challenge politely and firmly• Walk around – be visible!• Use common sense and discretion• Assume the majority are well behaved and honest• Call for help and clarification at earliest opportunity• Be vigilant!Don’t• Promise what you can’t give!• Interpret or assist in answering an exam question – if there is a query the lead
academic for that exam should clarify• Let students leave unnoticed, without handing in script and paper (or as
instructions dictate)
